IER 519 Experiment Execution Report: TEX Hanford

The TEX-Hanford experiments were performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Device Assembly Facility (DAF) at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site (NNSS). Three configurations were measured, with the measurements occurring in December 2025 and January 2026. The Fe-14 configuration was executed in December 2025; the Fe-11 configuration began its handstack on the Planet critical assembly machine in December 2025, but was taken critical in January 2026; the Fe-16 configuration was executed entirely in January 2026. The TEX-Hanford experiments were performed on the Planet critical assembly machine utilizing using PANN (Plutonium Aluminum No Nickel) ZPPR (Zero Power Physics Reactor) plutonium plates as fuel. The configurations were moderated with varying thicknesses of HDPE and iron absorber. This document details the configurations that were measured, preliminary reactivity measurements of the measured configurations, data files from the neutron detection systems, and results from the coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) measurements of the final stack height measurements each configuration.

Chlorine Worth Study Nuclear Data

The Chlorine Worth Study (CWS) was a series of experiments that took place at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The focus of the experiments was to develop new integral benchmarks for the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook with high sensitivity to chlorine in the thermal neutron energy region and which match sensitivities of aqueous chloride operations at LANL. This work discusses the experiment and how the experimental and simulated results using different nuclear data libraries compare to each other.

How to Safely Build 100-plus Kilograms of Weapons-Grade Plutonium

The goal of the EUCLID (Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in Nuclear Data) project was to reduce compensating errors by utilizing machine learning to both help determine which reactions contain compensating errors as well as optimizing an experiment which can be used to maximally reduce these errors. Compensating errors can adversely impact the predictive power of application simulations, and therefore it’s useful to further constrain nuclear data and reduce these errors. The EUCLID project included building two configurations at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). These two configurations had very different geometries (one was cube-like and one was slab-like). Previous works focus on selection of the target experiment(s), radiation transport capabilities developed in the project, the experiment optimization, and the performance of the experiments. This work will focus only on the safety aspects of performing this experiment, which utilized over 100 kg of weapons-grade plutonium.

NCERC 2024 Highlights

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is entrusted with ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile while advancing programs aimed at reducing global nuclear proliferation. These critical mission objectives are achieved through the expertise of a highly skilled team of professionals. The operations at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) play a vital role in developing and enhancing knowledge and expertise in advanced nuclear technologies. NCERC supports a wide range of mission areas, including nuclear criticality safety, nuclear emergency response, and nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, and arms control. It also provides support to the Department of Homeland Security, advances stockpile stewardship science, and delivers scientific expertise to other government agencies, such as NASA and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. NCERC conducts experiments utilizing diverse nuclear materials, from small neutron-emitting sources for testing radiation detection equipment to larger quantities of uranium and plutonium for criticality experiments. A cornerstone of NCERC's mission portfolio includes the operation of four critical mass assembly machines—Planet, Comet, Flattop, and Godiva-IV—which are instrumental in advancing nuclear science and ensuring the nation’s nuclear security objectives.

Investigation of Benchmark $k$ eff Sensitivity and Uncertainty for 239 Pu fission in Specific Energy Ranges

Nuclear data at intermediate energies (from 1 to 100s of keV) are evaluated based on scarce differential data and theory unable to capture physics’ expected structure. There is also a lack of integral data. This is a known deficiency and is challenging to address. Calculated effective multiplication factor, k eff , values for intermediate energy experiments are ~25× further from experiment than for fast energies and are often well outside the experimental uncertainties. The goal of the PARADIGM (PARallel Approach of Differential and InteGral Measurements) project is to significantly re duce the uncertainties of intermediate energy nuclear data for 239 Pu. To this end, PARADIGM simultaneously optimizes experiments at both the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). The combined set of data will inform new intermediate-energy nuclear data. By execution of differential and integral experiments, establishment of new theory, and undertaking nuclear data evaluation in parallel, the timeline to deliver improved nuclear data to users will be reduced significantly that is to three years. For the PARADIGM project, it was decided to optimize an integral experiment for two neutron energy ranges, within the full intermediate energy range. The low energy range goes from 1 to 30 keV, while the higher energy range goes from 30 to 600 keV. This work focuses on nuclear data sensitivities and uncertainties for 239 Pu fission for existing experiments in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP). When designing new experiments, it is important to understand what benchmarks currently exist. For a more traditional experiment design (in which a specific application model(s) exists), comparisons would be made between the application model(s) and existing benchmarks. For PARADIGM, there is no specific application model, but instead the specific nuclear data reaction and energy ranges of interest can be explored for existing benchmarks.

Integral Experiments Request 441 CED-3b Summary Report

Under IER-441, critical experiments were done with and without tantalum test rods within a central test region surrounded by 7uPCX fuel rods. The experiments were done in new critical assembly hardware designed to support the 7uPCX fuel in a 1.02 cm triangular-pitched array. Appendix I is a draft of section 1 of the ICSBEP benchmark evaluation of the experiments.

Godiva IV central cavity neutron environment characterization with threshold neutron detectors

Godiva IV is a cylindrical fast burst reactor comprised of approximately 65 kg of highly enriched uranium that is operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory and sited at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center at the Nevada National Security Site in Nevada in the United States. Godiva IV is typically operated at delayed critical and in the regime spanning from sub-prompt to super-prompt bursts. Godiva IV is used for sample irradiations, criticality safety demonstrations, dosimetry studies, and for studying super-prompt behavior. In preparation for both an upcoming experiment to reduce uncertainties in the prompt fission spectrum for 235U using threshold neutron detectors, and for future research using Godiva IV, it was desired to exercise the process of the selection of threshold neutron detectors/activation foils, radiation metrology, and the subsequent adjustment of the neutron spectrum. For this exercise, nine high purity threshold neutron detectors/activation foils were irradiated in a Godiva IV burst. The foils were then analyzed using a high-purity germanium detector in the NCERC counting laboratory to determine end of irradiation specific activities for available IRDFF-II reactions. This work summarizes the Godiva IV foil irradiation, radiation metrology results, and adjusted neutron spectrum. The results of this exercise ultimately characterized the neutron environment inside the sample irradiation cavity inside Godiva IV to a higher degree than previously performed, informed decisions for the upcoming larger scale experiment, and will inform future neutron spectrum characterizations at NCERC.

Final Design for Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) with Lithium Absorbers to Provide Validation Benchmarks for Y-12 Electrorefining Facility (IER 575, CED-2 Report)

One of the main goals of the Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) project is to use existing Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) assets to create critical experiment plutonium and uranium test beds for materials important to criticality safety that have insufficient benchmark evaluations. The plutonium test bed experiments were completed in 2018 and are published in the 2020 edition of the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The uranium test bed assemblies were completed in 2023 and accepted in the 2024 edition of the ICSBEP Handbook.

Reaction Rate Ratios for Recent Fast Metal Experiments with Large Plutonium Masses

Reaction rate ratios are integral responses that are used within the criticality experiments field because they contain spectral information. While these types of measurements have been utilized for nuclear data validation with historic experiments, few experiments of this type have been utilized for recent experiments, as few exist. This work focuses on measured reaction rate ratios for two nearly bare plutonium critical assemblies with different geometries: one that is cube like (with a Pu mass of 40 kg) and one that is slab like (with a Pu mass of 109 kg). Irradiations were performed with both configurations in which foils were placed near the center of the assembly. Plutonium, highly enriched uranium, depleted uranium, and Au foils were included in the irradiation and counted via high-purity germanium detectors. From these measurements, reaction rate ratios were calculated. Measured and simulated values and uncertainties are presented for the reaction rate ratios. Ratios utilizing the following reactions are given in this work: 197 Au(n, γ), 197 Au(n,2n), 235 U(n,fission), 238 U(n, fission), 238 U(n,2n), 238 U(n,γ), and 239 Pu(n,fission). Uncertainties for the measured reaction rate ratios ranged from 4% to 7%, and the contribution of various parameters to this uncertainty was investigated. The results are compared to historical experiments and should be used for nuclear data validation for future nuclear data library releases. These measurements are part of the EUCLID (Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in Nuclear Data) project, which utilizes measurement responses in addition to k eff (such as these reaction rate ratios) to help reduce uncertainties in 239 Pu nuclear data.

IER 499 Thermal Epithermal eXperiments with Highly Enriched Uranium and Chlorine (TEX-Cl) CED-3B

The Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) with highly enriched uranium (HEU) and chlorine (TEX Cl) experiment, IER 499, was executed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) in July - August 2024 by the following members of the Advanced Nuclear Technology Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory: Theresa Cutler, Peter Brain, Travis Grove, Rene Sanchez, Alex McSpaden, Kristin Stolte, Zach Lemke, Kenny Valdez, Charlie Kiehne. The experiment was born out of necessity for nuclear criticality safety validation of the capture cross section of 35 Cl. This cross section plays an important role in nuclear criticality safety at both Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Y-12 National Security Complex. This work sought to validate the Cl capture cross section through the construction and measurement of three separate critical configurations.

Perform Design Support with MCNP for New Measurements

This report incorporates our work carried out during our 5-month internship at LANL under an internship agreement with EAMEA (École des Applications Militaires de l’Énergie Atomique). After outlining the context in which we worked, we present our work as aid to modeling and predicting the neutronic behavior of nuclear systems, with a view to carrying out criticality experiments qualifying the MCNP code as part of innovative projects. Fourth generation reactors will enable to tackle a lot of issues such as environmental crisis, affordable energy access, and nuclear waste management. They seem to be one of the keys for a sustainable future. Most of the projects that emerge nowadays include the use of HALEU (high assay low enriched uranium) or MOX recycled fuels. Our projects are part of this dynamic and addresses concrete scientific research issues in the nuclear field. Studies of HALEU package are essential to anticipate the need, therefore the Optimus L (OPTImal Modular Universal Shipping cask technology) designed by NAC (Nuclear Assurance Corporation) international but filled with 20 % enriched uranium dioxide (UO 2 ) will be studied to support safe transportation. However, it seems there is no benchmark with a high correlation with the combination of this fuel and this package to validate MCNP simulations. As such, the study will focus on the development of new criticality safety benchmarks for this case. On the other hand, there is a great need for critical benchmarks in the intermediate energy range with MOX fuel. An IER (Integral Experiment Request) has then be requested to answer it through a partnership between French institution IRSN and U.S. Department of Energy's Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP). This experience planned for 2025 requires to gather calculated data through a MCNP model to be realized safely. Finally, a presentation of our one-week experience at the DAF as part of our discovery of criticality experiments will be introduced in Appendix 1: Week at the DAF (Device Assembly Facility)

The Neutron Pulse 1st Quarter 2026 Edition

Things have been busy at National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) since the start of the year. This quarter NCERC hosted three weeks of criticality safety courses allowing students hands-on experience with fissionable material. They also performed an experiment funded by the DOE-NRC Collaboration (DNCSH) in support of data for TerraPower. Additionally, this quarter included staging, measurement, and repacking operations to prepare for future experiments.

Integral Experiment Execution of Thermal or Epithermal eXperiments using Plutonium with Polyethylene and Iron, IER 519, TEX-Hanford (-Iron), CED-3b

This report documents the execution of experiments and measurements for IER 519, Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) for Hanford applications, using plutonium Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) plates moderated by interstitial polyethylene and iron (Fe) absorber plates. Initial hand stack, mass, and dimensional measurements were performed in July 2025. The experiments were completed over three weeks from December 2025 to January 2026 at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS). All photos and critical data were provided by NCERC and experimenters in LANL’s NEN-2.

NCERC-CL TREAT Free Field Characterization Foil Reaction Rate Results

This report summarizes the analysis and preliminary MCNP reaction rate modeling of free field characterization measurements performed in the Transient Reaction Test Facility (TREAT) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) between 12/18/2023 and 2/22/2024. A series of seven irradiations were performed using the Big-BUSTER (Broad Use Specimen Transient Experiment Rig) core configuration. Foil sets including 19.5% LEU-Zr alloy wire, S, Au, Fe, Ni, Co, Ti, and Zr were deployed in each irradiation. Identical foil sets were supplied to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and INL. All foils were supplied by INL. Additional details on the experiment can be found in [2]. The foil sets were shipped to the National Criticality Experiments Research Center Counting Laboratory (NCERC-CL) branch at LANL (NCERC-CL NISC) and were received on 3/25/2024. Additional details on receipt and counting are reported in [3]. All reactor dosimetry measurements were performed in adherence to the ASTM standards applicable to reactor dosimetry. Measured reaction rates from Au, Co, Fe, Ni, and Ti are reported. Select reaction rate ratios and simulated reaction rates and ratios are discussed. Reaction rates for all measured reaction products were modeled with MCNP 6.3.1 and a TREAT input deck supplied by Edward Lum. Neutron emission estimates calculated using the measured and simulated reaction rates show excellent agreement between the three fast-threshold n-p reactions with the percent differences being < 9% between the three reactions. The capture reactions had poorer, but still reasonable, agreement with < 20% percent differences between the neutron emission estimates of the three capture reactions. The percent difference between the fast-threshold and capture reactions is ∼ 100% for each reaction. This supports the TREAT model is not accurately modeling the neutron spectrum and additional measurements are required to characterize TREAT and match measurements to simulation.
