The Chicago Social Interaction Model (ChiSIM)

ChiSIM is a framework for implementing agent-based models that simulate the mixing of a synthetic population. In a ChiSIM based model, each agent, that is, each person in the simulated population, resides in a place (a household, dormitory or retirement home/long term care facility, for example), and moves among other places such as workplaces, homes, clinics, and community resources. Agents typically move between places according to their domain specific activity profile, such that each agent has a profile that determines at what times throughout the day they occupy a particular location. Once in a place, an agent mixes with other agents in some model or domain-specific way. For example, an agent may expose other agents to a disease in an epidemiological model.

Chicago microclimate and building energy use data

These data comprise three elements: - High resolution, 90 m simulated weather data for 1 year at 15 min. intervals (with known gaps toward the end of each month). These files are in .csv format. - A mapping of individual buildings with individual IDs, their latitude/longitude location, and height. (Excel file) - Energy simulation output of these individual buildings, at 15 min. intervals for a whole year. (.json and other files)

Carbonyl sulfide fluxes and concentrations from midwestern US (Bondville, FermiLab and Chicago)

This data package includes measurements of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) fluxes and concentrations from flux towers in the midwestern US. The measurements were made at AmeriFlux towers and thus the data package also includes a subset of the standard eddy covariance and meteorological data (e.g. VPD and NEE) that are also available from the AmeriFlux portal. The measurements presented here were made to provide an independent constraint on whole ecosystem stomatal conductance from these ecosystems with the goal of testing how the relationship between gross primary production and stomatal conductance varies through the growing season. Furthermore, we derived whole canopy nighttime stomatal conductance estimates to test how stomatal conductance varies between native prairie and maize ecosystems. All data presented here were discussed in the publication "Seasonal evolution of canopy stomatal conductance for a prairie and maize field in the midwestern US from continuous carbonyl sulfide fluxes" in Geophysical Research Letters (doi: 10.1029/2019GL085652).

CROCUS Air Quality Data at Chicago State University Prairie Site

The Air Quality Transmitter (AQT) (Vaisala AQT530) instrument provides observations on meteorological conditions, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), gas species concentrations (Nitric Oxide (NO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Ozone (O3)), and environment temperature and moisture. These measurements are critical for understanding air quality. These measurements are useful for understanding changes in aerosol properties, air quality research, and comparing to model experiments especially in urban environments. This dataset is from the Department of Energy Office of Science funded project, Community Research on Urban and Climate Science (CROCUS) (https://crocus-urban.org/). Datasets are stored in the netCDF data format, and we we encourage users to make use the associated toolkits available from Unidata (https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/), Project Pythia (https://foundations.projectpythia.org/core/data-formats/netcdf-cf.html), and our “Instrument Cookbooks” (https://crocus-urban.github.io/instrument-cookbooks) for more information on how to process the metadata-rich datasets.

Understanding Building Energy Use in the Chicago to Green Bay and Madison Area: Basic Building Stock Characterization

This report is part of a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters." Each report provides commercial and multifamily building characteristic and energy data for a local geography, with the intention of helping policymakers at the city, county and state levels better understand building energy use. Specifically, this report breaks down the building stock in the counties shown in Figure 1 by building type, size, energy consumption, and emissions.

Understanding Multifamily Energy Use in the Chicago to Green Bay and Madison Area: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning

This report is an addendum to a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters". This addendum expands the report series to include large multifamily building characteristics as well as energy and emission data for each local geography. The intention of this addendum is to help policymakers at the city, county, and state levels better understand building energy use and emissions in large multifamily buildings.

Effect of Environmental and Socioeconomic Factors on Increased Early Childhood Blood Lead Levels: A Case Study in Chicago

This study analyzes the prevalence of elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) in children across Chicagoland zip codes from 2019 to 2021, linking them to socioeconomic, environmental, and racial factors. Wilcoxon tests and generalized additive model (GAM) regressions identified economic hardship, reflected in per capita income and unemployment rates, as a significant contributor to increased lead poisoning (LP) rates. Additionally, LP rates correlate with the average age of buildings, particularly post the 1978 lead paint ban, illustrating policy impacts on health outcomes. The study further explores the novel area of land surface temperature (LST) effects on LP, finding that higher nighttime LST, indicative of urban heat island effects, correlates with increased LP. This finding gains additional significance in the context of anthropogenic climate change. When these factors are combined with the ongoing expansion of urban territories, a significant risk exists of escalating LP rates on a global scale. Racial disparity analysis revealed that Black and Hispanic/Latino populations face higher LP rates, primarily due to unemployment and older housing. The study underscores the necessity for targeted public health strategies to address these disparities, emphasizing the need for interventions that cater to the unique challenges of these at-risk communities.

Processing and analysis of data from the University of Chicago experiments on the IMP 4 and 5 spacecraft

Data from the Charged Particle Experiments of the IMP-4 and 5 spacecraft were processed and analyzed from launch through reentry. Approximately 95 percent of all data transmitted was recovered, processed, and analyzed. The computer programming and operational procedures which were developed to perform the processing and analysis of the data are discussed. The scientific results obtained from the analysis of the data are summarized. A bibliography of documents based on these experiments is included.

Protons and electrons in Jupiter's magnetic field - Results from the University of Chicago experiment on Pioneer 10

Fluxes of high energy electrons and protons are found to be highly concentrated near the magnetic equatorial plane from distances of about 30 to about 100 Jovian radii. The 10-hour period of planetary rotation is observed as an intensity variation, which indicates that the equatorial zone of high particle fluxes is inclined with respect to the rotation axis of the planet. At radial distances below 20 Jovian radii, the synchrotron-radiation-producing electrons with energies above 3 MeV rise steeply to a maximum intensity near the periapsis at 2.8 Jovian radii. The flux of protons with energies above 30 MeV reaches a maximum intensity at 3.5 Jovian radii, with the intensity decreasing inside this radial distance.
