On the Gibbs phenomenon 3: Recovering exponential accuracy in a sub-interval from a spectral partial sum of a piecewise analytic function

The investigation of overcoming Gibbs phenomenon was continued, i.e., obtaining exponential accuracy at all points including at the discontinuities themselves, from the knowledge of a spectral partial sum of a discontinuous but piecewise analytic function. It was shown that if we are given the first N expansion coefficients of an L(sub 2) function f(x) in terms of either the trigonometrical polynomials or the Chebyshev or Legendre polynomials, an exponentially convergent approximation to the point values of f(x) in any sub-interval in which it is analytic can be constructed.

Mappings and accuracy for Chebyshev pseudo-spectral approximations

The effect of mappings on the approximation, by Chebyshev collocation, of functions which exhibit localized regions of rapid variation is studied. A general strategy is introduced whereby mappings are adaptively constructed which map specified classes of rapidly varying functions into low order polynomials which can be accurately approximated by Chebyshev polynomial expansions. A particular family of mappings constructed in this way is tested on a variety of rapidly varying functions similar to those occurring in approximations. It is shown that the mapped function can be approximated much more accurately by Chebyshev polynomial approximations than in physical space or where mappings constructed from other strategies are employed.

Symbolic computation of recurrence equations for the Chebyshev series solution of linear ODE's

If a linear ordinary differential equation with polynomial coefficients is converted into integrated form then the formal substitution of a Chebyshev series leads to recurrence equations defining the Chebyshev coefficients of the solution function. An explicit formula is presented for the polynomial coefficients of the integrated form in terms of the polynomial coefficients of the differential form. The symmetries arising from multiplication and integration of Chebyshev polynomials are exploited in deriving a general recurrence equation from which can be derived all of the linear equations defining the Chebyshev coefficients. Procedures for deriving the general recurrence equation are specified in a precise algorithmic notation suitable for translation into any of the languages for symbolic computation. The method is algebraic and it can therefore be applied to differential equations containing indeterminates.

On Bernstein type inequalities and a weighted Chebyshev approximation problem on ellipses

A classical inequality due to Bernstein which estimates the norm of polynomials on any given ellipse in terms of their norm on any smaller ellipse with the same foci is examined. For the uniform and a certain weighted uniform norm, and for the case that the two ellipses are not too close, sharp estimates of this type were derived and the corresponding extremal polynomials were determined. These Bernstein type inequalities are closely connected with certain constrained Chebyshev approximation problems on ellipses. Some new results were also presented for a weighted approximation problem of this type.

On the constrained Chebyshev approximation problem on ellipses

Constrained Chebyshev approximation problems of the type with minimum (p is an element of Pi(sub n):p(c)=1) and maximum (z is an element of E) with /p(z)/ are considered. Here Pi(sub n) denotes the set of all complex polynomials of degree at most n, E is any ellipse in the complex plane, and c is an element of C/E. Such approximation problems arise in the context of optimizing semi-iterative methods for the solution of large, sparse systems of linear equations Ax=b with complex non-Hermitian coefficient matrices A. The problem of obtaining optimal polynomial preconditioners for conjugate gradient type methods for Ax=b also leads to problems of this type. A new family of polynomials -- q(sub n)(z;c), n is an element of N, and c is an element of C/E -- are introduced as the polynomials which are optimal for a modified version of the Chebyshev approximation problem with Pi(sub n) replaced by a certain subfamily. Some simple properties of q(sub n) are also listed. A necessary and sufficient condition for q(sub n) to be the extremal polynomial for the approximation problem is then derived. Finally, it is shown that q(sub n) is indeed optimal for the problem for all fixed n whenever the distance between c and E is sufficiently large. Results of some numerical tests are presented.

On adaptive weighted polynomial preconditioning for Hermitian positive definite matrices

The conjugate gradient algorithm for solving Hermitian positive definite linear systems is usually combined with preconditioning in order to speed up convergence. In recent years, there has been a revival of polynomial preconditioning, motivated by the attractive features of the method on modern architectures. Standard techniques for choosing the preconditioning polynomial are based only on bounds for the extreme eigenvalues. Here a different approach is proposed, which aims at adapting the preconditioner to the eigenvalue distribution of the coefficient matrix. The technique is based on the observation that good estimates for the eigenvalue distribution can be derived after only a few steps of the Lanczos process. This information is then used to construct a weight function for a suitable Chebyshev approximation problem. The solution of this problem yields the polynomial preconditioner. In particular, we investigate the use of Bernstein-Szego weights.

Recurrence relations for computing with modified divided differences

Modified divided differences (MDD) provide a good way of representing a polynomial passing through points with unequally spaced abcissas. Recurrence relations for computing coefficients in either the monomial or Chebyshev basis from the MDD coefficients, and for computing the MDD coefficients for either the differentiated or the integrated polynomial are given. The latter operation is likely to be useful if MDD are used in a method for solving stiff differential equations.

Compression of ephemerides

An algorithm is proposed for generating sequences of Chebyshev series which are the best approximations of an astronomical ephemeris in the sense of Chebyshev over large intervals of time. The criterion for a polynomial approximation of a function to be the best polynomial approximation of the function is that the error function present certain rippling characteristics as described by Remez (1957). General features of the program in PL/1 are described.

Quadrature imposition of compatibility conditions in Chebyshev methods

This paper handles a problem encountered in the solution by way of Chebyshev spectral collocation discretization of the Poisson equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. When pseudospectral Chebyshev methodology is utilized to discretize the partial differential equation these integrals have to be approximated by an appropriate quadrature formula. The correct quadrature formula is developed for these problems, taking into account the degree of the polynomials involved. It is shown that this formula leads to a well-conditioned Chebyshev approximation to the differential equations and that the compatibility condition is automatically satisfied.

On polynomial preconditioning for indefinite Hermitian matrices

The minimal residual method is studied combined with polynomial preconditioning for solving large linear systems (Ax = b) with indefinite Hermitian coefficient matrices (A). The standard approach for choosing the polynomial preconditioners leads to preconditioned systems which are positive definite. Here, a different strategy is studied which leaves the preconditioned coefficient matrix indefinite. More precisely, the polynomial preconditioner is designed to cluster the positive, resp. negative eigenvalues of A around 1, resp. around some negative constant. In particular, it is shown that such indefinite polynomial preconditioners can be obtained as the optimal solutions of a certain two parameter family of Chebyshev approximation problems. Some basic results are established for these approximation problems and a Remez type algorithm is sketched for their numerical solution. The problem of selecting the parameters such that the resulting indefinite polynomial preconditioners speeds up the convergence of minimal residual method optimally is also addressed. An approach is proposed based on the concept of asymptotic convergence factors. Finally, some numerical examples of indefinite polynomial preconditioners are given.

Quadrature imposition of compatibility conditions in Chebyshev methods

Often, in solving an elliptic equation with Neumann boundary conditions, a compatibility condition has to be imposed for well-posedness. This condition involves integrals of the forcing function. When pseudospectral Chebyshev methods are used to discretize the partial differential equation, these integrals have to be approximated by an appropriate quadrature formula. The Gauss-Chebyshev (or any variant of it, like the Gauss-Lobatto) formula can not be used here since the integrals under consideration do not include the weight function. A natural candidate to be used in approximating the integrals is the Clenshaw-Curtis formula, however it is shown that this is the wrong choice and it may lead to divergence if time dependent methods are used to march the solution to steady state. The correct quadrature formula is developed for these problems. This formula takes into account the degree of the polynomials involved. It is shown that this formula leads to a well conditioned Chebyshev approximation to the differential equations and that the compatibility condition is automatically satisfied.
