Spin-Charge-Lattice Coupling across the Charge Density Wave Transition in a Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet

Understanding spin and lattice excitations in a metallic magnetic ordered system forms the basis to unveil the magnetic and lattice exchange couplings and their interactions with itinerant electrons. Kagome lattice antiferromagnet FeGe is interesting because it displays a rare charge density wave (CDW) deep inside the antiferromagnetic ordered phase that interacts with the magnetic order. Here, we use neutron scattering to study the evolution of spin and lattice excitations across the CDW transition 𝑇 CDW in FeGe. While spin excitations below ∼100 meV can be well described by spin waves of a spin-1 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, spin excitations at higher energies are centered around the Brillouin zone boundary and extend up to ∼180 meV consistent with quasiparticle excitations across spin-polarized electron-hole Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, 𝑐-axis spin wave dispersion and Fe-Ge optical phonon modes show a clear hardening below 𝑇 CDW due to spin-charge-lattice coupling but with no evidence of a phonon Kohn anomaly. By comparing our experimental results with density functional theory calculations in absolute units, we conclude that FeGe is a Hund’s metal in the intermediate correlated regime where magnetism has contributions from both itinerant and localized electrons arising from spin polarized electronic bands near the Fermi level.

Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector, which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5° off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be 1.26 ± 0.18⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on CH and 1.44 ± 0.21⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on H 2 ⁡O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the neut v5.3.2 and genie v2.8.0 Monte Carlo generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

First Measurement of $𝜈_𝑒$ and $\bar{𝜈}_𝑒$ Charged-Current Single Charged-Pion Production Differential Cross Sections on Argon Using the MicroBooNE Detector

Understanding electron neutrino interactions is crucial for measurements of neutrino oscillations and searches for new physics in neutrino experiments. We present the first measurement of the flux-averaged $𝜈_𝑒$ + $\bar{𝜈}_𝑒$ charged-current single charged-pion production cross section on argon using the MicroBooNE detector and data from the NuMI neutrino beam. The total cross section is measured to be [0.93 ± 0.13⁢(stat) ± 0.27⁢(syst)] × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon at a mean $𝜈_𝑒$ + $\bar{𝜈}_𝑒$ energy of 730 MeV. Differential cross sections are also reported in electron energy, electron and pion angles, and electron-pion opening angle.

Progress toward double-differential cross-section measurements of single charged-pion production in charged current muon neutrino interactions on argon with SBND

Resonant neutrino–nucleus processes constitute a significant portion of neutrino interactions in the few-GeV energy region. Charged-current interactions with a muon and one single charged pion in the final state (CC1$\pi$) are primarily sensitive to resonant processes, while also receiving contributions from non-resonant processes and being strongly affected by nuclear effects and final-state interactions. A precise understanding of this channel is essential for improving neutrino interaction models and reducing systematic uncertainties in oscillation measurements. The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermilab has collected the largest neutrino–argon dataset to date, providing an excellent opportunity to study CC1$\pi$ interactions on argon. This analysis aims to improve existing single-differential cross-section measurements by reporting results in a variety of kinematic variables and to perform the first double-differential CC1$\pi$ cross-section measurement on argon, using novel techniques for pion energy reconstruction.

Vehicle charging effects during electron beam emission from the CHARGE-2 experiment

The CHARGE-2 sounding rocket payload has measured the transient and steady-state charging of a spacecraft in LEO during the emission of a low-power electron beam. The electron beam successfully escaped the emitting spacecraft above 240 km, rather than being degraded by the spacecraft's potentials. These potentials were limited to about half of the 1-kV beam accelerating potential at all latitudes, suggesting that the electron beam was able to escape at altitudes down to 160 km. Electrons created from beam-plasma interactions become increasingly important in the return current below 240 km, and increased with decreasing altitude.

Charge Loss and Charge Sharing Measurements for Two Different Pixelated Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride Detectors

As part of ongoing research at Marshall Space Flight Center, Cadmium-Zinc- Telluride (CdZnTe) pixilated detectors are being developed for use at the focal plane of the High Energy Replicated Optics (HERO) telescope. HERO requires a 64x64 pixel array with a spatial resolution of around 200 microns (with a 6m focal length) and high energy resolution (< 2% at 60keV). We are currently testing smaller arrays as a necessary first step towards this goal. In this presentation, we compare charge sharing and charge loss measurements between two devices that differ both electronically and geometrically. The first device consists of a 1-mm-thick piece of CdZnTe that is sputtered with a 4x4 array of pixels with pixel pitch of 750 microns (inter-pixel gap is 100 microns). The signal is read out using discrete ultra-low-noise preamplifiers, one for each of the 16 pixels. The second detector consists of a 2-mm-thick piece of CdZnTe that is sputtered with a 16x16 array of pixels with a pixel pitch of 300 microns (inter-pixel gap is 50 microns). Instead of using discrete preamplifiers, the crystal is bonded to an ASIC that provides all of the front-end electronics to each of the 256 pixels. what degree the bias voltage (i.e. the electric field) and hence the drift and diffusion coefficients affect our measurements. Further, we compare the measured results with simulated results and discuss to

Recent Excitation, Charge Exchange, and Lifetime Results in Highly Charged Ions Relevant to Stellar, Interstellar, Solar and Comet Phenomena

Recent JPL absolute excitation and charge exchange cross sections, and measurements of lifetimes of metastable levels in highly-charged ions (HCIs) are reported. These data provide benchmark comparisons to results of theoretical calculations. Theoretical approaches can then be used to calculate the vast array of data which cannot be measured due to experimental constraints. Applications to the X-ray emission from comets are given.

A Measurement of the Pion-Energy Dependence of Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Scattering to Final States With One Charged Pion in NOvA

The study of neutrino oscillations is a main priority for particle physics as the most immediately tractable lever on physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, more insight into violation of the combined symmetry of charge-conjugation plus parity could yield clues to the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry, and in some theoretical frameworks the neutrino mass could give insights into dark matter. NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment with both a near and far detector that seeks to measure several of the parameters of the neutrino mixing matrix, as well as carry out a broad program of additional physics. NOvA has innovated and developed a variety of techniques in the space of neutrino physics, including expanding the use of machine learning techniques in reconstruction. NOvA has also set the stage for the next generation US-based long baseline experiment, DUNE. This dissertation details the creation of a new neutrino interaction vertex reconstruction package for NOvA, which offers enormous improvements in accuracy above the previous vertexer it replaces. This is accomplished using a Convolutional Visual Network trained on large datasets of simulated events. The vertexer is validated thoroughly against data. This dissertation also presents a cross-section measurement for $\nu_\mu + N \rightarrow \mu^- + 1\pi^\pm + X$ (where X does not include additional charged pions) binned in pion kinetic energy, a challenging measurement in general and for NOvA in particular. Measurements like this provide crucial inputs for neutrino interaction models utilized by neutrino oscillation experiments. This measurement in particular is important to the energy ranges relevant for DUNE in a band not well-covered by any other experiment.
