Bipolar Membranes with an Electrospun 3D Junction

Freestanding bipolar membranes (BPMs) with an entirely new and transformative morphology were fabricated and characterized. The key disruptive design element was a water-splitting/water-generation junction layer of finite thickness composed of interwoven and interlocking electrospun anion-exchange polymer (AEP) fibers and cation-exchange polymer (CEP) fibers. Methods were developed to sandwich the 3D junction layer between two pre-formed dense AEP and CEP films., with the closure of all interfiber voids, where the processing steps are easily incorporated into a commercial roll-to-roll membrane manufacturing scheme. A series of membranes were made using different polymers and junction layers to identify the optimum morphology and composition for water-splitting and water-generation applications. For water splitting, the 3D junction BPMs worked remarkably well with operating current densities at/above 1.0 A/cm2 (10X greater than commercial BPMs) at a transmembrane voltage drop of only 1.1 V. In water generation mode, the 3D junction BPMs operated at 0.5 A/cm2, a world-record current density. The membranes were found to exhibit outstanding durability and can be manufactured at scale for low cost. The high operating current densities and stable long-term operation are due to the 3D junction layer design, where there is a high interfacial area for water splitting or water generation reactions and where the interlocking fibers prevent delamination of the outer films. These new BPMs are ideal candidate materials for both existing water-splitting electrodialysis separations and new electrochemical processes, such as large-scale direct air capture of CO 2 , reactors for CO 2 reduction, self-hydrating fuel cells, and redox flow batteries.

X-Rays in Cepheids: XMM-Newton Observations of η Aql

X-ray bursts have recently been discovered in the Cepheids δ Cep and β Dor modulated by the pulsation cycle. We have obtained an observation of the Cepheid η Aql with the XMM-Newton satellite at the phase of maximum radius; the phase at which there is a burst of X-rays in δ Cep. No X-rays were seen from the Cepheid η Aql at this phase, and the implications for Cepheid upper atmospheres are discussed. We have also used the combination of X-ray sources, as well as Gaia and 2MASS data, to search for a possible grouping around the young intermediate mass Cepheid. No indication of such a group was found.

Multiple rendezvous maneuvers at synchronous altitude

Rendezvous techniques between synchronous satellites were found using a cotangential elliptic phasing (CEP) transfer. This transfer is a closed elliptic orbit which is cotangent to the synchronous orbits of the chase vehicle and target satellite. The cotangent point lies on the line of apsides of the transfer orbit which coincides with the line of intersection of the synchronous orbits. The rendezvous maneuvers accomplish plane changes and phase shifts simultaneously, and these maneuvers are found to be optimal when the plane change is split equally between the velocity increments. The CEP transfer can be extended to several revolutions for a further reduction of fuel usage. A set of synchronous satellites was used in a simulated mission. An optimal sequence for rendezvous among these satellites was established such that the total sum of velocity increments is within the realm of estimated 1980 technology.

Mariner 9 observations of beta Cephei stars

Ultraviolet spectra of three beta Cep variables and a nonvariable star of similar spectral type were observed by the ultraviolet spectrometer on Mariner 9. A significant light variation at 1400 A may have been detected for beta Cep. The variable stars have mean ultraviolet spectra similar to that of the nonvariable star and do not show any significant short-period spectral variations.

Continuing changes in the peculiar nebulous object PV Cephei

Changes in the nebular structure, optical spectrum and stellar brightness of the faint star PV Cephei and the nebulosity associated with it are discussed. Iris photometry of the starlike object at the tip of the fan-shaped nebula reveals irregular variability of approximately 4 magnitudes in the red. Stellar spectra in the region 4300-6750 A taken from December 1976 to April 1980 are similar to the richest emission line spectra of T Tauri stars, while nebular spectra indicate a lack of spherical symmetry. Observations obtained in the infrared reveal a source offset by a few arcsec from the apex of the fan, which is identified with the illuminating star. Radial velocities of CO emission indicate that PV Cep is at the same distance as NGC 7023, and independent estimates lead to an estimated value of 500 pc. Such a distance corresponds to a bolometric luminosity approximately 100 times that of the sun. It is suggested that PV Cep is a T Tauri star that has recently broken through its circumstellar cocoon at a time when highly erratic variability and a strong stellar wind characterize the star.

The chromospheres of classical Cepheids. I - Low resolution IUE spectra

A program to study the behavior of chromospheres in classical Cepheids using both ground-based and satellite-based observations. Five stars, delta Cep, nu Aql, beta Dor, zeta Gem, and l Car, have been included, and where possible the various types of data have been obtained simultaneously. The first part of this investigation concerns low dispersion spectra from the IUE satellite. Fine error sensor (FES) magnitudes are presented for the five Cepheids and, in the case of one, nu Aql, are used to rediscuss the period. The 'artificial viscosity dip' predicted by some theoretical calculations may be present in the FES light curve of delta Cep. The low dispersion spectra have been used to determine continuum magnitudes at various UV wavelengths, and light curves are shown. The amplitude increases with decreasing wavelength except around 1550 A. Line emission in the short wavelength region is observed in three of the Cepheids and is found to be phase dependent. Some correspondence is found between the variation of the emission lines and the appearance of bumps on the UV light curves.

A search for spectroscopic binaries among the runaway O type stars

Numerous radial velocity measurements of medium dispersion were made for the 10 brighter stars given in Stone's list of very probable O type runaways. All plates were measured with the KPNO PDS microdensitometer, and a new iterative reductional analysis was used to derive plate velocities, which are estimated to be 1.6 times more accurate internally than those found by using the traditional method. Of thse stars, psi Per, alpha Cam, HD 188209, and 26 Cep are identified as probable velocity variables, while 9 Sge, lambda Cep, and HD 218915 are classed as possible variables. If the source of this variability is Keplerian rather than atmospheric, which cannot be established unequivocally from the observations of this paper, psi Per could be a spectroscopic binary with a black hole companion, and at least 1.2 solar mass. The detection of runaway binary systems from radial velocity measurements is discussed.

Observations of Of-star wind variability

Nightly variations in He II 4686 A have been observed in four Of stars, HD 152408, HD 151804, 9 Sge, and Lambda Cep. Three of the stars were not previously known to show such variations. In one case, Lambda Cep, simultaneous observations with IUE showed variations in ultraviolet (UV) resonance-line profiles during the same time period as those in He II 4686 A. This implies that the perturbations causing the He II 4686 A variability affect the entire wind acceleration zone.

Contact binary stars. I - An X-ray survey

X-ray emission from a contact binary star was first detected by the HEAO 1 satellite in 1977. Spectroscopic observations of 44i Boo and VW Cep by IUE established the presence of high-temperature chromospheric and transition region emission lines in the spectra of these stars. The HEAO 1 and IUE results implied that the processes causing X-ray emission from VW Cep might be similar to those energizing the solar corona, and that X-ray emission might be a common occurrence among contact binary stars. A series of observations of these stars was, therefore, conducted with the aid of the HEAO 2 (Einstein) Observatory. The present investigation is concerned with the results of these observations, giving attention to their implications with respect to the nature of contact binary stars. The results are compared with similar HEAO 2 studies of coronal X-ray sources in the local region of the Galaxy, in the Hyades, and other rapidly rotating systems.

Ultraviolet observations of interstellar extinction near the Cepheus OB3 molecular cloud

New IUE observations and available data for O and B stars new Cep OB3 are presented, and extinction curves for the stars are derived. The differences in those curves are examined in detail, showing that while the level of the far-UV extinction differs greatly throughout the region, the shape of the 2175 A bump does not. The different curves form a family which can be parametrized by the strength of the bump per E(B-V). This suggests that some single physical process dominates the modification of the grains in the region. Evidence is presented which indicates that this process is related to the evolution of the grains once they emerge from the Cep OB3 molecular cloud. The practicality of using the strength of the bump per E(B-V) for dereddening stars in a region where the form of the UV extinction differs from place to place is demonstrated.

The 3.1 micrometer ice band in infrared reflection nebulae

Recent observations show that infrared reflection nebulae are common phenomena in star forming regions. Extensive observations were made of two nearby infrared reflection nebulae, Orin Molecular Cloud 2 IRS1 (OMC-2/IRS1) and Cepheus A IRS6a (Cep-A/IRS6a). Mie scattering models of ice coated grains were used to study the constraints on the properties and locations of grains that could produce a feature similar to that observed in OMC-2 and Cep-A. It was concluded that scattering by ice particles alone could not be responsible for the 3.1 micron feature observed in infrared reflection nebulae.

IUE spectroscopy of U Cephei during the mass flow outburst of 1986 June

The interacting Algol-type binary U Cep underwent another of its irregularly occurring transient high-mass flow events during June 1986. For the first time, high-resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy of U Cep during such an event was possible. High-resolution spectra in the far-ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet were obtained with IUE. These spectra show that the ultraviolet continuum decreased by factors of 1.2 to 3.0 during the greatest activity. In addition, one or more narrow absorption components with radial velocities as high as -500 km/s appeared in association with a number of C, Si, Al, Fe, Zn, and Mg lines. The Mg II doublet developed a flat-bottomed appearance with a residual intensity of about 0.31 and a width of at least 800 km/s. These phenomena are interpreted in terms of high-velocity gas streams, mass loss from the system, and the formation of an optically thick equatorial bulge around the B star.

Mapping of surface activity on the W UMa-type system VW Cephei

After multifilter photometry of the W UMa-type contact binary VW Cep (P = 6.67 hr; G5V + K0V) in 1986/87 revealed large asymmetries in the light curves believed to be caused by large, cool starspot regions on the surface of the larger stars, in Apr. 1987 it was observed with IUE to study the chromospheres and transition regions of the components. During one complete orbital cycle, three SWP and four LWP low dispersion spectra were obtained, including and then excluding the suspected active region. Phase dependent TR line emission strengths were found, most notably C IV, which is 50 percent stronger when the spot region is most visible. The results could be important because VW Cep represents an extreme case for studying stellar dynamo theory and observations can play a crucial role in the unterstanding of magnetic fields and activity cycles in rapidly rotating solar-like stars.

Finite-state codes

A class of codes called finite-state (FS) codes is defined and investigated. The codes, which generalize both block and convolutional codes, are defined by their encoders, which are finite-state machines with parallel inputs and outputs. A family of upper bounds on the free distance of a given FS code is derived. A general construction for FS codes is given, and it is shown that in many cases the FS codes constructed in this way have a free distance that is the largest possible. Catastrophic error propagation (CEP) for FS codes is also discussed. It is found that to avoid CEP one must solve the graph-theoretic problem of finding a uniquely decodable edge labeling of the state diagram.

Magnetic field and spatial structure of bipolar outflow sources

Deep K band images of three bipolar outflow sources (Cep A, GL 490, and R Mon) are presented. The polarization of background or embedded stars close to these star-forming regions has been measured in the I band to determine the local projected magnetic field direction. For Cep A the outflow direction and the magnetic field are almost parallel as is the case for most bipolar outflow sources. This alignment is poorer in the case of R Mon while GL 490 is a peculiar case with the outflow direction almost perpendicular to the local magnetic field. No indication was found for a distortion of the magnetic field close to the collimating disks of the outflows.

Distribution of the 3.1 micron feature in Cepheus A

Near-IR absorption features produced by core-mantle dust grains are observed in many protostellar objects. The high spatial resolution observations (less or equal to 3 in.) could be helpful to monitor the expected changes of the features. Cep A/IRS 6 is a suitable candidate to carry out such a kind of study. It is located in an active star formation region and consists of a young object associated with an extended reflection nebula. The ice feature was observed in four positions of Cep A/IRS 6 with a 2.7 in. aperture. The observations were carried out at the IRTF using the cooled grating array spectrometer CGAS. The 2.4 to 3.8 micron spectra of two positions are presented.

From bipolar to quadrupolar - The collimation processes of the Cepheus A outflow

Results of new K-band observations of the (1, 1) and (2, 2) ammonia lines toward Cepheus A are reported. The lines are mapped with approximately 2 arcsec of angular resolution and 0.3 km/s of velocity resolution. A sensitivity of 10 mJy has been achieved. The observations reveal details of the spatial and kinematics structure of the ambient high-density gas. It is suggested that the interstellar high-density gas is diverting and redirecting the outflow in the sense that the quadrupolar structure of the molecular outflow is produced by the interaction with the ammonia condensationss, with Cep A-1 and Cep A-3 splitting in two halves, respectively the blue- and redshifted lobes of an east-west bipolar molecular outflow.

Cepheid velocity curves from lines of different excitation and ionization. I - Observations

Radial velocity curves were obtained from several hundred optical absorption lines for FF Aql, Delta Cep, Eta Aql, and Chi Cyg. An iodine absorption cell has been used to reduce relative radial velocity errors to a few hundred meters per second. The shape and amplitude of the resulting radial velocity curves are in good agreement with previous results, particularly Delta Cep, which is shown to have been extremely constant over most of the last century. Velocities from atoms in low excitation potential (EP) levels (Fe I, Fe II, Sc II, Y II, and Ti II) show positive velocity residuals of as much as 5 km/s compared to high EP Fe I lines during the phase of rapidly decreasing velocity. The 8.12 eV line of Si II at 6348 A has a negative velocity residual during the same phase. The asymmetry of the high EP Fe I, Ti II, and the Si II lines are similar and greater than the asymmetry of the low EP Fe I, Fe II, Sc II, and Y II lines.
