A diagrammatic approach for automatically deriving analytical gradients of tensor hyper-contracted electronic structure methods

In this work, we introduce a diagrammatic approach to facilitate the automatic derivation of analytical nuclear gradients for tensor hyper-contraction (THC) based electronic structure methods. The automatically derived gradients are guaranteed to have the same scaling in terms of both operation count and memory footprint as the underlying energy calculations, and the computation of a gradient is roughly three times as costly as the underlying energy. The new diagrammatic approach enables the first cubic scaling implementation of nuclear derivatives for THC tensors fitted in molecular orbital basis (MO-THC). Furthermore, application of this new approach to THC-MP2 analytical gradients leads to an implementation, which is at least four times faster than the previously reported, manually derived implementation. Finally, we apply the new approach to the 14 tensor contraction patterns appearing in the supporting subspace formulation of multireference perturbation theory, laying the foundation for developments of analytical nuclear gradients and nonadiabatic coupling vectors for multi-state CASPT2.

Quantum simulation of bosons with the contracted quantum eigensolver

Abstract Quantum computers are promising tools for simulating many-body quantum systems due to their potential scaling advantage over classical computers. While significant effort has been expended on many-fermion systems, here we simulate a model entangled many-boson system with the contracted quantum eigensolver (CQE). We generalize the CQE to many-boson systems by encoding the bosonic wavefunction on qubits. The CQE provides a compact ansatz for the bosonic wave function whose gradient is proportional to the residual of a contracted Schrödinger equation. We apply the CQE to a bosonic system, where N quantum harmonic oscillators are coupled through a pairwise quadratic repulsion. The model is relevant to the study of coupled vibrations in molecular systems on quantum devices. Results demonstrate the potential efficiency of the CQE in simulating bosonic processes such as molecular vibrations with good accuracy and convergence even in the presence of noise.

Quantum simulation of excited states from parallel contracted quantum eigensolvers

Abstract Computing excited-state properties of molecules and solids is considered one of the most important near-term applications of quantum computers. While many of the current excited-state quantum algorithms differ in circuit architecture, specific exploitation of quantum advantage, or result quality, one common feature is their rooting in the Schrödinger equation. However, through contracting (or projecting) the eigenvalue equation, more efficient strategies can be designed for near-term quantum devices. Here we demonstrate that when combined with the Rayleigh–Ritz variational principle for mixed quantum states, the ground-state contracted quantum eigensolver (CQE) can be generalized to compute any number of quantum eigenstates simultaneously. We introduce two excited-state (anti-Hermitian) CQEs that perform the excited-state calculation while inheriting many of the remarkable features of the original ground-state version of the algorithm, such as its scalability. To showcase our approach, we study several model and chemical Hamiltonians and investigate the performance of different implementations.

Ultralocality and slow contraction

Abstract We study the detailed process by which slow contraction smooths and flattens the universe using an improved numerical relativity code that accepts initial conditions with non-perturbativedeviations from homogeneity and isotropy along two independent spatial directions.Contrary to common descriptions of the early universe,we find that the geometry first rapidly converges to an inhomogeneous, spatially-curved and anisotropic ultralocal state in which all spatialgradient contributions to the equations of motion decrease as an exponential in time to negligible values. This is followed by a second stage in which the geometry converges to a homogeneous, spatially flat and isotropic spacetime. In particular, the decay appears to follow the same history whether the entire spacetime or only parts of it are smoothed by the end of slow contraction.

Dynamical attractors in contracting spacetimes dominated by kinetically coupled scalar fields

We present non-perturbative numerical relativity simulations of slowly contracting spacetimes in which the scalar field driving slow contraction is coupled to a second scalar field through an exponential non-linear σ model-type kinetic interaction. These models are important because they can generate a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of super-Hubble density fluctuations fully consistent with cosmic microwave background observations. We show that the non-linear evolution rapidly approaches a homogeneous, isotropic and flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) geometry for a wide range of inhomogeneous and anisotropic initial conditions. Ultimately, we find, the kinetic coupling causes the evolution to deflect away from flat FRW and towards a novel Kasner-like stationary point, but in general this occurs on time scales that are too long to be observationally relevant.

Smoothing and flattening the universe through slow contraction versus inflation

In a systematic study, we use an equivalent pair of improved numerical relativity codes based on a tetrad-formulation of the classical Einstein-scalar field equations to examine whether slow contraction or inflation (or both) can resolve the homogeneity, isotropy and flatness problems. Our finding, based on a set of gauge/frame invariant diagnostics and the models considered, is that slow contraction robustly and rapidly smooths and flattens spacetime beginning from initial conditions that are outside the perturbative regime of the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, whereas inflation fails these tests. We present new numerical evidence supporting the conjecture that the combination of ultralocal evolution and an effective equation-of-state with pressure much greater than energy density is the key to having robust and rapid smoothing. The opposite of ultralocality occurs in expanding spacetimes, which is the leading obstruction to smoothing following a big bang.

A Right Transfer Access Control Model of Internet of Things Based on Smart Contract

Sensor nodes play a crucial role in the promotion of development of Internet of Things (IoT). Through this transaction, RO defines access control policies in script form based on ABAC's access control model to grant access right. The identity of all users in the model is identified by address. This paper builds a more flexible right transfer access control model by means of combining the Attribute-Based Access Control model (ABAC) and blockchain technology. Owing to the characteristics of ABAC’s attributes and right association, the massive problems of some sensor nodes can be solved. At the same time, for the sake of addressing the dynamic problems such as node access and right transfer, right transfer contract (TS) and access control contract (CS) are employed on the chain to ensure efficient and safe transmission of rights. To solve on-chain storage problems and ensure transparency of the operation, the idea of Rollup in Ethereum expansion is used to upload the final state of protocol policy and right exchange to the chain. Any user can know the policy and current right transfer status at any time. Finally, comparative and security analysis show that the model presented here can solve IoT devices’ massive and dynamic problems more effectively and it is more secure than the traditional models.

In Situ Characterization of the Effect of Twin-Microstructure Interactions on {$1 0 \bar{1} 2$} Tension and {$1 0\bar {1} 1$} Contraction Twin Nucleation, Growth and Damage in Magnesium

Through in situ electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) experiments, this paper uncovers dominant damage mechanisms in traditional magnesium alloys exhibiting deformation twinning. The findings emphasize the level of deleterious strain incompatibility induced by twin interaction with other deformation modes and microstructural defects. A double fiber obtained by plane-strain extrusion as a starting texture of AM30 magnesium alloy offered the opportunity to track deformation by EBSD in neighboring grains where some undergo profuse {$1 0\bar {1} 2$} twinning and others do not. For a tensile loading applied along extrusion transverse (ET) direction, those experiencing profuse twinning reveal a major effect of grain boundaries on non-Schmid behavior affecting twin variant selection and growth. Similarly, a neighboring grain, with its $\langle$c$\rangle$-axis oriented nearly perpendicular to tensile loading, showed an abnormally early nucleation of {$1 0\bar {1} 1$} contraction twins (2% strain) while the same {$1 0\bar {1} 1$} twin mode triggering under $\langle$c$\rangle$-axis uniaxial compression have higher value of critical resolved shear stress exceeding the values for pyramidal $\langle$c + a$\rangle$ dislocations. The difference in nucleation behavior of contraction vs. compression {$1 0\bar {1} 1$} twins is attributed to the hydrostatic stresses that promote the required atomic shuffles at the core of twinning disconnections.

ePROJECT BUILDER: PROMOTING WIDER ADOPTION OF ENERGY SAVINGS PERFORMANCE CONTRACTS THROUGH STANDARDIZATION AND TRANSPARENCY

The United States Federal Government has been conducting guaranteed savings energy savings performance contracts for over 20 years and now relies on ESPC for the majority of its energy efficiency work. Along with a related financed project type, these deals resulted in $4.2 billion of project investment in the five years ending in 2016, a pace that has even accelerated since. Measurement and verification (M&V) on the projects is the key to assuring savings realization and persistence. Perceived as a weakness or burdensome added cost in the early years of the program, M&V has become a strength. All energy conservation measures (ECMs) have some form of measurement – defined as a measured baseline establishment followed by at least one measurement of the main energy-saving parameter taken in the performance period for each ECM. The government’s in-house energy consulting office, the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), now recommends measurement of these “Option A” M&V ECMs throughout the contract term, usually annually. Moreover, a significantly higher percentage of projects are now characterized by more ambitious M&V, including Option B (all parameter measurement) for most generation (including renewable) and some efficiency measures, and more frequent Option C (whole facility utility bill analysis) for “deep retrofit” projects with multiple, interactive ECMs. Coincident with this progress in M&V has been a much greater embracing of ESPC by the federal agencies, resulting in the enormous rate of projects now executed. This paper traces the evolution of M&V in federal ESPC and argues that the heightened credibility of the savings has contributed significantly to the procurement vehicle’s long-term viability. This focus on savings integrity via M&V has been learned over two decades for U.S. federal ESPC, but countries with developing ESPC markets would be wise to emphasize it as their markets emerge, allowing them to avoid some of the “growing pains” experienced in the U.S.

Cybersecurity and Privacy Aspects of Smart Contracts in the Energy Domain

Smart contracts (SCs) are a set of logical procedures that can run by individual peers participating within a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) network. By design, smart contracts inherit many of the benefits of DLT, including its immutability, scalability, and security properties. Nevertheless, they may introduce additional attack vectors, which can lead to cybersecurity explorations that could jeopardize the end-application ability to operate as intended or result in data leaks, and privacy violations. In this work, an exploration of known problems, and possible attack scenarios will be presented. This is followed by a set of proposed best practices and mitigation strategies that are intended to assist developers, researchers, and other relevant stakeholders to develop secure SC implementations.

Swing Contract-Based Valuation for Distributed Energy Resources in Transactive Energy Systems: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

With the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) and power grids with high fractions of renewable energy, market constructs are evolving to allow DERs to participate in multiple possible markets, at different levels of grid hierarchy. The effective participation of DERs in market environments is aided by swing contract-based pricing mechanisms, whereby DERs have a two-part compensation structure – one for their reservation/commitment and another for performancedriven ex-post payment for their actual mobilization during dispatch. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learningbased (Q-learning) approach that allows a rational DER agent to select the market it wants to participate in within a composite market environment where individual markets are coordinated by possibly different actors. The proposed Q-learning framework aids DERs in their self-valuation by implicitly maximizing their own payoff through market participation, assuming a swing contract-based compensation structure. We complement our work through simulation-based investigations where factors affecting the DER decision making process, such as parametric uncertainties in market (and grid) environments, are studied.

Flexible Service Contracting for Risk Management within Integrated Transmission and Distribution Systems

The general objective of our project has been to investigate the ability of Independent Distribution System Operators (IDSOs), functioning as linkage agents for Integrated Transmission and Distribution (ITD) systems, to facilitate the flexible availability and usage of reserve in support of ITD system operations. This general objective is in accordance with Order 2222 of the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), titled “Participation of Distributed Energy Resource Aggregations in Markets Operated by Regional Transmission Organizations and Independent System Operators”. The Final Rule for FERC Order 2222 was issued on September 17, 2020. The primary contribution of our project is that we have formulated an innovative energy management Transactive Energy Design (TES) approach for ITD systems that provides promising support for our project objective. Specifically, we have developed a new type of IDSO-managed TES design for distribution system operations, as well as new types of swing contracts permitting IDSOs to participate in transmission system operations as providers of reserve harnessed from distribution system resources in return for appropriate compensation. Together, these design elements constitute a scalable market-based approach facilitating efficient reserve procurement for ITD system operations from a fuller range of power resources. The efficacy of our approach has been demonstrated by means of detailed conceptual analyses as well as test case simulations. To implement the latter, we have developed the ITD TES Platform V2.0, a computational platform that permits the modeling and software implementation of ITD system operations over time. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) energy region has been used as the empirical anchor for the development of this platform. Our conceptual and test-case work has been reported in a Wiley/IEEE Press book, two refereed book chapters, and seven refereed journal articles. The key components comprising the ITD TES Platform V2.0 have been released as documented open-source software at online GitHub repositories.

Utility Energy Service Contract Boosts Chemical Weapons Destruction Mission at Army Pueblo Chemical Depot

For six decades, the U.S. Army has safely and securely stored chemical munitions at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado. To help fulfill international treaty obligations and to meet a congressional deadline of 2023 for the elimination of these aging weapons, initial destruction of the Pueblo chemical weapons stockpile began in 2015. A utility energy service contract (UESC) executed in 2016 between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Depot’s serving utility, Black Hills Energy (BHE), directly supported this mission with the installation of a new electrical substation that was essential to the Depot’s need for uninterrupted power.
