Contractor Support Building #7 Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Site Assessment Work Plan

This Work Plan documents the proposed field sampling activities for a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Site Assessment at the Contractor Support Building (CSB) #7 at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The Work Plan provides a background of the historical activities that occurred at CSB #7, and the limited environmental investigations performed at CSB #7. The proposed Site Assessment activities at CSB #7 include the advancement of a soil lithologic boring to 60 feet below ground surface, the installation of a staff gauge in site surface water, perform direct push groundwater sampling at eight locations, and collect four surface water samples. Sampling details, depths, and locations are presented in the Work Plan. The Work Plan was presented to the KSC Remediation Team in the form of an Advance Data Package in February 2023. Following STRIVES approval, the CSB #7 PFAS Site Assessment Work Plan will be formally submitted to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Contractors Road Heavy Equipment Area (SWMU 055) 2022 Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report

This document presents a summary of activities completed at the Contractors Road Heavy Equipment (CRHE) Area, located at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, from June through December 2022. The activities conducted at the CRHE Area include: - Annual groundwater sampling activities associated with sitewide plume monitoring and Underground Injection Control (UIC) monitoring in the former bioremediation Interim Measures (IM) Hot Spot 1 (HS1) area; - Direct push technology (DPT) groundwater investigation; - Semiannual vapor intrusion (VI) evaluation activities. This facility is designated Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) Number 055 (SWMU 055) under KSC’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program. HydroGeoLogic, Inc. (HGL) prepared this report for the National Aeronautics and Space NASA) under contract number 80KSC019F0096/80KSC019D0012, Technical Directive-03. An Advance Data Package (ADP) presentation of the elements of this report received Team (KSCRT) agreement at the April 5, 2023, KSCRT meeting. The chlorinated volatile organic compound plume appears to be stable vertically and horizontally. Additional DPT groundwater sampling will be completed to support a remedial alternatives evaluation for potential means to expedite groundwater cleanup. There are per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances in site groundwater, and assessment is planned in the future. Sub-slab soil gas monitoring results do not indicate any concerns with indoor vapor intrusion. Based on the 2022 annual groundwater sampling results, it is recommended that annual sampling continue to alternate with the wet and dry season, with the next sampling event planned for December 2023.

Architects, Engineers, and Contractors - Key to Moving Towards a Zero Carbon Future: Preprint

Many building owners have set energy or carbon goals often citing targets of carbon neutrality in the next 10 to 30 years. Ultimately, these goals need to be translated into actions related to new and existing construction. Designers and contractors are key to designing solutions that meet the energy and carbon goals. As a voluntary program, the Design and Construction Allies (Allies program) was formed to identify barriers for the adoption of zero energy and zero carbon buildings (ZEZC). The goal was to understand why "all" buildings are not designed with ZEZC in mind. Currently the Allies program consists of 25 leading architecture, engineering, and construction firms that are seeking to take actionable steps to deliver buildings with the ZEZC goal. In the first year, the Allies have found numerous barriers and have implemented working groups to address key challenges that can be solved readily Allies. The paper will document program formulation and engagement strategies as well as the identified barriers and related recommendations for the design and construction community to shift towards ZEZC as a normal design and construction outcome. Two major topics rose to the top that the working groups were created to address: (1) providing guidance and knowledge to clients such that they will be active in creating ZEZC, and (2) bringing together knowledge around embodied carbon such that action can be taken to reduce this carbon emission area. Each working group has refined the barriers and created solutions that have been tested by Ally members. This rapid identification of barriers and subsequent creation of deployable solutions shows rapid change can happen.

Panel Session 120: Roundtable: Waste Management - Energy Facilities Contractor Operating Group (EFCOG WM)

This Roundtable focused on the WM EFCOG working group as they met to discuss a variety of issues of importance to US DOE waste management operations. The purpose of the WM EFCOG is to seek out and promote the best management and operating practices, cost effective technologies and disposal options for all waste streams generated at US DOE facilities whether destined for US DOE or commercial facilities. Each site representative provided a radioactive waste management lessons learned briefing. Panelists with presentations: Savannah River Site (SRS) Solid Waste Program Update (Kerri Crawford); Idaho Clean-up Project Status (Frederick Hughes); West Valley Demonstration Project Update - EFCOG Waste Management Working Group (John Rendall); Key Project Challenges and Successes (Kalli Shupe); EFCOG WMWG Challenging Waste Subgroup Update (Tammy Monday); CH TRU Difficult Waste Stream Processing Challenges (Daniel Pancake); Argonne Building 350 Clean-up Success Using Effective Work Control (Daniel Dilday); Problematic Waste Streams on the Oak Ridge Reservation (John Wrapp)
