Classical geometries defined by exterior differential systems on higher frame bundles

Exterior differential ideals are discussed, and sets of invariant generators presented, for Reimannian, conformal and projective geometries, and for specializations such as Ricci-flat, self-dual and Einstein-Maxwell theories. The Cartan characteristic integers are explicitly calculated, and involutory basis forms found, for each of these (specialized to four dimensions), exposing their algebraic structure and showing how they generate well-posed sets of partial differential equations.

Effects of Conformal Coat on Tin Whisker Growth

A whisker from a tin plated part was blamed for the loss of a commercial spacecraft in 1998. Although pure tin finishes are prohibited by NASA, tin plated parts, such as hybrids, relays and commercial off the shelf (COTS) parts, are something discovered to have been installed in NASA spacecraft. Invariably, the assumption is that a conformal coat will prevent the growth of, or short circuits caused by, tin whiskers. This study measures the effect a Uralane coating has on the initiation and growth of tin whiskers, on the ability of this coating to prevent a tin whisker from emerging from the coating, and on the ability to prevent shorting. A sample of fourteen brass substrates (1 inch by 4 inches by 1/16 inch) were plated by two separate processes: half of the specimens were 'bright' tin plated directly over the brass substrate and half received a copper flash over the brass substrate prior to 'bright' tin plating. Each specimen was coated on one half of the substrate with three bi-directional sprays of Uralane 5750 to a nominal thickness of 25 to 75 micrometers (1 to 3 mils). Several specimens of both types, Cu and non-Cu flashed, were placed in an oven maintained at 50 C as others' work suggests that this is the optimal temperature for whisker formation. The remaining specimens were maintained at room ambient conditions. The surfaces of each specimen have been regularly inspected using both optical (15 to 400x power) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). Many types of growths, including needle-like whiskers, first appeared approximately three months after plating on the non-conformally coated sides of all specimens. At four months, 4 to 5 times more growth sites were observed on the coated side; however, the density of growth sites on the non-conformally coated side has since increased rapidly, and now, at one year, is about the same for both sides. The density of growth sites is estimated at 90/sq mm with 30 percent of the sites growing whiskers (needle-like forms) with the potential to cause short circuit bridging. The average growth rate of the needle-like whiskers on the non-conformally coated areas is about 130 micrometers per year with some outliers reaching 800 micrometers after one year. It is more difficult to make growth measurements under the conformal coat. As yet no whiskers have been observed to penetrate through the coating surface, however, a number of tin nodules appear on the verge of breaking through the thinner regions of the coating surface. These domes are developing sharper and sharper tips, as if a growing whisker is about to push its way through a tough skin. Our observations are that the specimens with copper flash show a much lower density of nucleation sites and significantly slower whisker growth compared to the specimens that have only bright tin plating over brass. The specimens kept at room temperature have a higher whisker density than those stored at 50 C. This is an unexpected result and does not agree with the published findings of others. All of the whiskers originate from small surface defects (thin, tiny scratches) that appear over the entire surface of each specimen.

On two nucleons near unitarity with perturbative pions

We explore the impact of perturbative pions on the Unitarity Expansion in the two-nucleon S-waves of Chiral Effective Field Theory at next-to-next-to leading order (N 2 LO). Pion exchange explicitly breaks the nontrivial fixed point’s universality, i.e. invariance of S waves under both conformal and Wigner’s combined SU(4) spin–isospin transformations. On the other hand, Unitarity explicitly breaks chiral symmetry. The two seem incompatible in their respective exact-symmetry limits. χEFT with Perturbative Pions in the Unitarity Expansion resolves the apparent conflict in the Unitarity Window (phase shifts 45° ≲ δ(k) ≲ 135°), i.e. around momenta most relevant for low-energy nuclear systems. Its only LO scale is the scattering momentum; NLO adds only scattering length, effective range and non-iterated one-pion exchange (OPE); and N 2 LO only once-iterated OPE. Agreement in the 1 S 0 channel is very good.

Self-duality under gauging a non-invertible symmetry

Abstract We discuss two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) which are invariant under gauging a non-invertible global symmetry. At every point on the orbifold branch ofc= 1 CFTs, it is known that the theory is self-dual under gauging a ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 symmetry, and has Rep(H 8 ) and Rep(D 8 ) fusion category symmetries as a result. We find that gauging the entire Rep(H 8 ) fusion category symmetry maps the orbifold theory at radiusRto that at radius 2/R. AtR=$$ \sqrt{2} $$ 2 , which corresponds to two decoupled Ising CFTs (Ising 2 in short), the theory is self-dual under gauging the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry. This implies the existence of a topological defect line in the Ising 2 CFT obtained from half-space gauging of the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry, which commutes with thec= 1 Virasoro algebra but does not preserve the fully extended chiral algebra. We bootstrap its action on thec= 1 Virasoro primary operators, and find that there are no relevant or marginal operators preserving it. Mathematically, the new topological line combines with the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry to form a bigger fusion category which is a ℤ 2 -extension of Rep(H 8 ). We solve the pentagon equations including the additional topological line and find 8 solutions, where two of them are realized in the Ising 2 CFT. Finally, we show that the torus partition functions of the Monster 2 CFT and Ising×Monster CFT are also invariant under gauging the Rep(H 8 ) symmetry.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy, spectra & boundary conformal field theory

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the symmetry-resolved (SR) entanglement entropy (EE) for one single interval in the ground state of a 1 + 1D conformal field theory (CFT), that is invariant under an arbitrary finite or compact Lie group, G. We utilize the boundary CFT approach to study the total EE, which enables us to find the universal leading order behavior of the SREE and its first correction, which explicitly depends on the irreducible representation under consideration and breaks the equipartition of entanglement. We present two distinct schemes to carry out these computations. The first relies on the evaluation of the charged moments of the reduced density matrix. This involves studying the action of the defect-line, that generates the symmetry, on the boundary states of the theory. This perspective also paves the way for discussing the infeasibility of studying symmetry resolution when an anomalous symmetry is present. The second scheme draws a parallel between the SREE and the partition function of an orbifold CFT. This approach allows for the direct computation of the SREE without the need to use charged moments. From this standpoint, the infeasibility of defining the symmetry-resolved EE for an anomalous symmetry arises from the obstruction to gauging. Finally, we derive the symmetry-resolved entanglement spectra for a CFT invariant under a finite symmetry group. We revisit a similar problem for CFT with compact Lie group, explicitly deriving an improved formula for U(1) resolved entanglement spectra. Using the Tauberian formalism, we can estimate the aforementioned EE spectra rigorously by proving an optimal lower and upper bound on the same. In the abelian case, we perform numerical checks on the bound and find perfect agreement.

Brans-Dicke-type models with nonmetricity

A scalar-tensor-nonmetric theory of gravity without matter fields is shown to be equivalent to the scalar-tensor-torsion theory proposed by German, the only difference being in the source of the Weyl vector or torsion vector (for equivalently the scalar field) which remains arbitrary in the theory. General extended conformal transformations, which leave the curvature tensor invariant, are presented and their implications for metric-affine theories and scalar-tensor theories are discussed.

Exact evaluation of large-charge correlation functions in nonrelativistic conformal field theory

The large-charge master field which generates all n -point correlation functions with an insertion of large charge Q in nonrelativistic conformal field theory is obtained. This field is used to compute Schrödinger-invariant n -point correlation functions of large-charge operators via a direct evaluation of the path integral. Conformal dimensions are found to agree with calculations based on the state-operator correspondence. The master field solution exhibits an emergent harmonic trap whose frequency is a function of the Euclidean time. The large-charge effective action with operator insertions describes a droplet of superfluid matter whose spatial size scales with the time separation of sources. The solution is used to compute Schrödinger symmetry breaking corrections in the large-charge effective field theory (EFT) due to a finite scattering length in the fundamental theory of fermions near unitarity. The scaling of these effects in the large-charge power counting scheme is established, and the size of the effects is quantified using input from quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the near-unitary gas, as well as from the large- N expansion at large charge. Constructing the infrared conformal generators on the fuzzy sphere

We investigate the conformal algebra on the fuzzy sphere, and in particular the generators of translations and special conformal transformations which are emergent symmetries in the infinite IR but are broken along the RG flow. We show how to extract these generators using the energy momentum tensor, which is complicated by the fact that one does not have a priori access to the energy momentum tensor of the CFT limit but rather must construct it numerically. We discuss and quantitatively analyze the main sources of corrections to the conformal generators due to the breaking of scale-invariance at finite energy, and develop efficient methods for removing these corrections. The resulting generators have matrix elements that match CFT predictions with accuracy varying from sub-percent level for the lowest-lying states up to several percent accuracy for states with dimension \sim 5 ∼ 5 with N=16 N = 16 fermions. We show that the generators can be used to accurately identify primary operators vs descendant operators in energy ranges where the spectrum is too dense to do the identification solely based on the approximate integer spacing within conformal multiplets.

Chern-Simons invariants from ensemble averages

We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form Q. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by Q. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We also discuss the holographic duality prior to averaging in terms of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.

Extending the Lorentz transformation by characteristic coordinates

The problem considered is that of rectilinear motion with variable velocity. The paper gives, by an elementary construction, a system of coordinates which is conformal in a restricted region near the axis of the motion. In such coordinates the velocity of light remains invariant even for observers moving with variable velocity. By a particular choice of the scale relation the restricted conformal transformations can be made to reduce to the Lorentz transformation everywhere in the case of constant velocity and locally in the case of variable velocity.

Modular-Invariant Random Matrix Theory and AdS 3 Wormholes

We develop a nonperturbative definition of RMT 2 : a generalization of random matrix theory that is compatible with the symmetries of two-dimensional conformal field theory. Given any random matrix ensemble, its 𝑛-point spectral correlations admit a prescribed modular-invariant lift to RMT 2 , which moreover reduce to the original random matrix correlators in a near-extremal limit. Central to the prescription is a presentation of random matrix theory in Mellin space, which lifts to two dimensions via the SL⁡(2,ℤ) spectral decomposition employed in previous work. As a demonstration we perform the explicit RMT 2 lift of two-point correlations of the GUE Airy model. We propose that in AdS 3 pure gravity, semiclassical amplitudes for off-shell 𝑛-boundary torus wormholes with topology Σ 0,𝑛 × 𝑆 1 are given by the RMT 2 lift of JT gravity wormhole amplitudes. For the three-boundary case, we identify a gravity calculation which matches the RMT 2 result.

Celestial leaf amplitudes

Celestial amplitudes may be decomposed as weighted integrals of AdS 3 -Witten diagrams associated to each leaf of a hyperbolic foliation of spacetime. We show, for the Kleinian three-point MHV amplitude, that each leaf subamplitude is smooth except for the expected light-cone singularities. Moreover, we find that the full translationally-invariant celestial amplitude is simply the residue of the pole in the leaf amplitude at the point where the total conformal weights of the gluons equals three. This full celestial amplitude vanishes up to light-cone contact terms, as required by spacetime translation invariance, and reduces to the expression previously derived by Mellin transformation of the Parke-Taylor formula.

High precision tests of QCD without scale or scheme ambiguities: The 40th anniversary of the Brodsky–Lepage–Mackenzie method

A key issue in making precise predictions in QCD is the uncertainty in setting the renormalization scale μ r and thus determining the correct values of the QCD running coupling α s (μ r ) at each order in the perturbative expansion of a QCD observable. It has often been conventional to simply set the renormalization scale to the typical scale of the process Q and vary it in the range μ r $\in$ [Q/2, 2Q] in order to estimate the theoretical error. This is the practice of Conventional Scale Setting (CSS). The resulting CSS prediction will however depend on the theorist’s choice of renormalization scheme and the resulting pQCD series will diverge factorially. It will also disagree with renormalization scale setting used in QED and electroweak theory thus precluding grand unification. A solution to the renormalization scale-setting problem is offered by the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), which provides a systematic way to eliminate the renormalization scale-and-scheme dependence in perturbative calculations. The PMC method has rigorous theoretical foundations, it satisfies Renormalization Group Invariance (RGI) and preserves all self-consistency conditions derived from the renormalization group. The PMC cancels the renormalon growth, reduces to the Gell-Mann–Low scheme in the N c → 0 Abelian limit and leads to scale- and scheme-invariant results. The PMC has now been successfully applied to many high-energy processes. In this article we summarize recent developments and results in solving the renormalization scale and scheme ambiguities in perturbative QCD. In particular, we present a recently developed method the PMC ∞ and its applications, comparing the results with CSS. The method preserves the property of renormalizable SU(N)/U(1) gauge theories defined as Intrinsic Conformality (iCF). This property underlies the scale invariance of physical observables and leads to a remarkably efficient method to solve the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity at every order in pQCD. This new method reflects the underlying conformal properties displayed by pQCD at NNLO, eliminates the scheme dependence of pQCD predictions and is consistent with the general properties of the PMC. A new method to identify conformal and β-terms, which can be applied either to numerical or to theoretical calculations is also shown. We present results for the thrust and C-parameter distributions in e + e - annihilation showing errors and comparison with the CSS. We also show results for a recent innovative comparison between the CSS and the PMC ∞ applied to the thrust distribution investigating both the QCD conformal window and the QED N c → 0 limit. In order to determine the thrust distribution along the entire renormalization group flow from the highest energies to zero energy, we consider the number of flavors near the upper boundary of the conformal window. In this flavor-number regime the theory develops a perturbative infrared interacting fixed point. These results show that PMC ∞ leads to higher precision and introduces new interesting features in the PMC. In fact, this method preserves with continuity the position of the peak, showing perfect agreement with the experimental data already at NNLO. We also show a detailed comparison of the PMC ∞ with the other PMC approaches: the multi-scale-setting approach (PMCm) and the single-scale-setting approach (PMCs) by comparing their predictions for three important fully integrated quantities R e+e- , R$_Τ$ and Γ (H→$b\bar{b}$) up to the four-loop accuracy.

On the conformal symmetry of exceptional scalar theories

The DBI and special galileon theories exhibit a conformal symmetry at unphysical values of the spacetime dimension. We find the Lagrangian form of this symmetry. The special conformal transformations are non-linearly realized on the fields, even though conformal symmetry is unbroken. Commuting the conformal transformations with the extended shift symmetries, we find new symmetries, which when taken together with the conformal and shift symmetries close into a larger algebra. For DBI this larger algebra is the conformal algebra of the higher dimensional bulk in the brane embedding view of DBI. For the special galileon it is a real form of the special linear algebra. We also find the Weyl transformations corresponding to the conformal symmetries, as well as the necessary improvement terms to make the theories Weyl invariant, to second order in the coupling in the DBI case and to lowest order in the coupling in the special galileon case.

Enzyme-mediated aminoglycoside resistance without target mimicry

Abstract The primary mode of resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics is through chemical modification catalyzed by aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes. Numerous structural studies of these enzymes have invariably shown that they bind aminoglycosides in the same lowest-energy conformation as the intended target for these antibiotics, the A site of the bacterial ribosome. Presumably, the binding mode mimicry enables these enzymes to compete successfully with the target, thus conferring effective resistance. Here we present the first structural and functional studies of two aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes that do not use target mimicry, AAC(3)-Ia and AAC(3)-XIa. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that these enzymes bind aminoglycoside antibiotics in a conformation where the central 2-deoxystreptamine ring is in boat conformation. The effect of this non-canonical binding mode on the enzymes’ ability to modify antibiotics is assessed in silico and in vitro, and its impact for conferring resistance is assessed in vivo. Overall, the results show that target mimicry, while advantageous, is not an essential strategy for aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes to be effective in conferring resistance.

Three dimensional flows around airfoils with shocks

The present work describes a mathematical model and numerical scheme for the computer-aided calculation of two- and three-dimensional transonic flow over an isolated yawed wing with oblique shock waves and a trailing vortex sheet. The flow is modeled by the potential equation for irrotational flow which is hyperbolic at supersonic points and elliptic at subsonic points. A coordinate-invariant difference scheme is used in which retarded difference formulas are constructed to conform with the local flow direction. The resulting 'rotated' difference scheme allows complete flexibility in the choice of a coordinate system. Shock waves are located automatically in the form of compression bands spread over a few mesh widths. The scheme has proven to be stable and convergent throughout the transonic range. Calculations have been performed for Mach number up to 1.2 and yaw angles up to 60 deg, the likely operating range of a yawed-wing transport designed to fly at supersonic speeds. Calculations becomes less accurate towards upper end of range, because the difference scheme is first-order accurate in the supersonic range.

Embedding space approach to Lorentzian CFT amplitudes and causal spherical functions

Conformal field theory in a Minkowski setting is discussed in an embedding space approach, paying special attention to causality constraints for four-point amplitudes. The physics of dilatation and Lorentz boost is emphasized in specifying the noncompact maximal Abelian subgroup of S O ( d , 2 ) . Reduction of a conformal field theory four-point amplitudes as functions of cross ratios is shown to be equivalent to enforcing H bi-invariance, i.e., F ( h g h ′ ) = F ( g ) , with g ∈ S O ( d , 2 ) and H an appropriate subgroup. Causality is imposed by introducing appropriate semigroups. Causal zonal spherical functions are constructed, making contact with Minkowski conformal blocks introduced previously. Euclidean correlation functions in quantum gravity

We calculate Euclidean correlation functions through next-to-leading order in the low-energy effective theory of gravity. We focus on correlation functions of curvature and volume operators, calculating these functions through one-loop order. We show that quantum fluctuations of the background spacetime must be taken into account in order to obtain gauge invariant expressions, and we point out a subtlety associated with the analytic continuation of the conformal mode. Our final expressions for the correlation functions involve only Newton’s constant and the source-sink separation, and they are a universal prediction of the low-energy effective theory. Thus, they serve as a useful point of comparison for nonperturbative lattice formulations of gravity.
