A new method for using Cf-252 in SEU testing

A system using Cf-252 and associated nuclear instrumentation has determined the single-event upset (SEU) cross section versus linear energy transfer (LET) curve for several 2K x 8 static random access memories (SRAMs). The Cf-252 fission fragments pass through a thin-film organic scintillator detector (TFD) on the way to the device under test (DUT). The TFD provides energy information for each transiting fragment. Data analysis provides the energy of the individual ion responsible for each SEU; thus, separate upset cross sections can be developed for different energy and mass regions of the californium spectrum. This californium-based device is quite small and fits onto a bench top. It provides a convenient and inexpensive supplement or alternative to accelerator and high-altitude/space SEU testing.

Local to Global Air Quality Simulations using the NASA GEOS Composition Forecast Model, GEOS-CF

We give an overview of the NASA Global Earth Observing System Composition Forecast model (GEOS-CF), a high-resolution (roughly 25-km) global composition model developed by the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). This system combines the GEOS weather and aerosol model with the GEOS-Chem chemistry module to provide a holistic view of atmospheric composition that captures a wide range of air pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and fine particulate matter.Given the global extent of the model, GEOS-CF captures large-scale processes such as long-range transport of air pollutants, across ocean basins and continents.

Mars Space Suit Materials Testing Using SHERLOC Calibration Target Data: The Max-CF Project

The Mars 2020/“Perseverance” rover carries a suite of space suit materials as part of the SHERLOC* calibration target [1]. The materials are periodically analyzed by SHERLOC as part of a regular calibration routine and are generating a rich data set regarding their degradation in the martian surface environment. The Maximization of Calibration Fabrics (Max-CF) project will effectively turn SHERLOC data into a measure of space suit material service lifetimes by exposing a second set of materials in a Mars chamber, replicating SHERLOC measurements using the analogous ACRONM** instrument at JSC, and then performing materials testing to include tensile testing. These data can be used to inform space suit design and/or materials development, improving crew safety for future Mars missions. This will partially address NASA’s Strategic Knowledge Gap 8 (Mars Surface Technology) which identifies a need to develop technologies to “sustain humans on the surface of Mars [and] enable human mobility and exploration” [2]. This abstract describes the overall Max-CF project and progress on the laboratory-based study to date.

Extending CF Conventions to Enhance Data FAIRness for Atmospheric Composition Observations

The Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) and Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) are data file formats created to aid users in the creation or use of scientific data. These file formats are useful for handling large data volumes and hosting extensive metadata as global, group, or variable attributes and are popular with the modeling community. HDF and NetCDF files are widely used with atmospheric remote sensing data and have been used to support measurements from numerous field campaigns, from satellite to aircraft or ground and mobile based measurements. The files from airborne field studies, however, vary greatly in terms of the file structure and the amount and content of their metadata. Information relevant to the file that can be useful to the user such as the data producer, location where data was taken, variable descriptions, or information about the instrument might not be included in the file. Recently, the Measurements of Aerosols, Clouds, and their Interactions for Earth System Models (MACIE) group started a grassroots effort to develop a CF-based template for the HDF and NetCDF files for field studies, with the aim of making the data products more interoperable and usable. This template seeks to make the files more compliant to Climate and Forecast (CF) metadata conventions and to standardize the file structure and the global and variable attributes. The template would help to ensure that HDF and NetCDF files contain adequate metadata to better support their use for research, e.g., the modeling community, and to enhance the usability and interoperability of data for research communities at large. The draft template has been applied to recent field studies for various instruments and their merge files in support of the Atmosphere Observing System (AOS) project. The details of the revised template are to be presented, as well as examples of the implementation of these requirements for merge files and lidar observation data files and issues revealed during the implementation process.

Anomalous neutron yields confirmed for Ba-Mo and newly observed for Ce-Zr from spontaneous fission of Cf 252

We reinvestigated the neutron multiplicity yields of Ba-Mo, Ce-Zr, Te-Pd, and Nd-Sr from the spontaneous fission of 252 Cf by (i) using both γ -γ -γ -γ and γ -γ -γ coincidence data, (ii) using up to date level scheme structures, and (iii) crosschecking analogous energy transitions in multiple isotopes, we have achieved higher precision than previous analyses. Particular attention was given to the Ba-Mo pairs where our results clearly confirm that the Ba-Mo yield data have a second hot fission mode where 8–10, and now 11 neutron evaporation channels are observed. These are the first observations of the 11 neutron channel. These 8–11 neutron channels are observed for the first time in the Ce-Zr pairs, but are not observed in other fission pairs. The measured intensities of the second mode in Ba-Mo and Ce-Zr pairs are ~1.5(4)% and ~1.0(3)%, respectively. These high neutron number evaporation modes can be an indication of hyperdeformation and/or octupole deformation in 143-145 Ba and in 146,148 Ce at scission to give rise to such high neutron multiplicities.

Forecasting with the GEOS-CF System and Other NASA Resources to Support Air Quality Management

Air quality (AQ) is a major and growing concern for public health around the world. Economic development, population growth, and climate change are all expected to exacerbate already poor AQ in many regions. Furthermore, AQ is often only sparsely monitored with reference-grade in-situ instruments. NASA resources and products have the potential to help in addressing this AQ data gap. The GEOS-CF (Goddard Earth Observing System – Composition Forecasting) global atmospheric composition modeling system is run each day at a global scale to provide recent estimates and five-day forecasts at hourly temporal resolution of atmospheric constituents relevant to AQ. NASA satellite missions (along with those of other space agencies) provide remotely-sensed estimates of atmospheric composition relevant to AQ. This paper gives a brief overview of these capabilities, and outlines the efforts underway to combine model forecasts, satellite retrievals, and surface-based measurements to provide more comprehensive and accurate estimates and forecasts of local AQ which will be broadly applicable and accessible globally.

Hydrocyclization/Defluorination of CF 3 ‐Substituted Acrylamides: Insights from Kinetics of Hydrogen Atom Transfer

Abstract The introduction of F‐containing groups into organic molecules can significantly alter their physical and chemical properties. Particularly, gem ‐difluoroalkenes serve as versatile precursors for a broad variety of organofluorine compounds, commonly used in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and materials science. Based on the kinetics of H• transfer to acrylamide ( k H = 2.28 × 10 −4 M −1 s −1 at 300 K in toluene), the study describes a nickel‐hydride‐(or Li[BEt 3 H]) initiated hydrocyclization/defluorination of CF 3 ‐substituted acrylamides, offering alternative access to 4‐fluorovinyl‐substituted 2‐pyrrolidones (Seletracetam derivatives that are antiepileptic drug candidates). This process proceeds with high yields and remarkable chemo‐ and regioselectivity. The hydrocyclization/defluorination can be initiated by either H• or H – transfer, followed by a 5‐exo‐trig cyclization and subsequent fluorine elimination. The strategy has been applied in the late‐stage functionalization of drug molecules, providing a valuable tool in the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds.

Late Prompt Fission Gamma Rays from 235 U(n,f) and 252 Cf(sf)

Two measurements of fission γ rays were performed with the DANCE and NEUANCE arrays using the reactions 235 U(n, f) and 252 Cf(sf). Utilizing the fast time response of the detectors and a method for estimating the accidental background, we obtained the energy spectrum of the late prompt fission γ rays as a function of the time since fission. The experimental results are compared with predictions of the code CGMF folded with GEANT4 simulations of the detector response.

Experimental spectrum averaged cross sections (SACS) in 252 Cf(sf) neutron field and its impact on the evaluation of neutron standards

A new evaluation of spectrum averaged cross sections (SACS) of 235 U, 238 U, and 239 Pu measured in the 252 Cf(sf) reference neutron field is presented and found to be consistent with the original Mannhart SACS evaluation in IRDF-2002. The comprehensive vetted experimental database that includes SACS ratio and absolute SACS measurements of major actinides is being used to update the SACS database employed as input of the new GMApy code to derive the Neutron Standards. An update of the current neutron standards based on Time Projection Chamber (TPC) shape data, a new comprehensive uncertainty quantification, and revised SACS experimental database is proposed which result in a 0.7% increase of the evaluated 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) crosssection ratio in the 1–5 MeV energy region. The increase is due to a 0.3% reduction of the standard 235 U(n,f) cross section and a 0.4% increase of the 239 Pu(n,f) reference cross section in the 1–5 MeV energy region. Those changes are well within estimated USU fission cross-section uncertainties of 1.2%, but are relevant for the evaluated mean values.

Resonant x-ray absorption of strong-field-ionized CF 3 Br

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of strong-field laser ionization of CF 3 Br followed by resonant x-ray absorption at the Br K-edge. Distinct 1s -> 4p, 5p Rydberg transitions of Br q+ (q = 1-4) atomic ions are observed and identified with Hartree-Fock-Slater and relativistic configuration interaction calculations. Time-dependent density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations were performed to simulate the dissociative ionization process and the molecular orbitals for the q = 1-4 charge states. Measurements were made with both parallel and perpendicular linear polarizations of the laser and x-rays, but dichroism was not observed, indicating negligible alignment by the laser ionization process. This result is explained by calculations on atomic Br and the molecular simulation.

Excited levels in odd-A silver isotopes populated rn fission of {sup 252}Cf

Excited levels in 111−121 Ag , odd-𝐴 isotopes populated following spontaneous fission of 252 Cf have been studied using high-fold 𝛾 coincidences measured with Gammasphere array of Compton-suppressed Ge spectrometers at Argonne National Laboratory. The experimental information on these nuclei reported before has been corrected and extended. In the work we discuss the evolution of triaxiality in odd-Ag nuclei. Relative positions of the 𝜋⁢𝑝1/2 and 𝜋⁢𝑔9/2 shells defining the 𝑍=40 gap when approaching the 𝑁=82 closure, the 𝜋⁢1/2+⁢[431] intruder bands, the three-quasiparticle configurations, and the so called 𝑗−1 anomaly in odd-Ag nuclei are also discussed.

Structure in the event-by-event energy-dependent neutron-$γ$ multiplicity correlations in 252 Cf(sf)

The emission of neutrons and γ rays by fission fragments reveal important information about the properties of fragments immediately following scission. The initial fragment properties, correlations between fragments, and emission competition give rise to correlations in neutron-γ emission. Recent theoretical and experimental advances have been proposed to explain the mechanism of angular momentum generation in fission, which would result in observable signature in neutron-γ emission correlations. In this paper, we present a novel analysis method of neutrons and γ rays emitted by fission fragments that allows us to discern structure in the observed correlations. We have analyzed data collected on 252 Cf (sf) at the Chi-Nu array at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Through our analysis of the energy-differential neutron-γ multiplicity covariance, we have observed enhanced neutron-γ correlations, corresponding to rotational band γ-ray transitions, at γ-ray energies of 0.7 and 1.2 MeV. To shed light on the origin of this structure, we compare the experimental data with the predictions of three model calculations. The origin of the observed correlation structure is understood in terms of a positive spin-energy correlation in the generation of angular momentum in fission.

Directional dependence of the event-by-event neutron-γ multiplicity correlations in 252 Cf(sf)

We differentiate the event-by-event n-γ multiplicity data from 252 Cf(sf) with respect to the energies of the emitted particles as well as their relative angles of emission. We determine that neutron emission enhances γ-ray emission around 0:7 and 1:2 MeV, but the only directional alignment was observed for E γ ≤ 0:7 MeV and tended to be parallel and antiparallel to neutrons emitted in the same event. The emission of γ rays at other energies was determined to be nearly isotropic. The presence of the emission and alignment enhancements is explained by positive correlations between neutron emission and quadrupole γ-ray emission along rotational bands in the de-exciting fragments. This observation corroborates the hypothesis of positive correlations between the angular momentum of a fragment and its intrinsic excitation energy. The results of this work are especially relevant in view of the recent theoretical and experimental interest in the generation of angular momentum in fission. Specifically, we have determined an alignment of the fragments angular momenta in a direction perpendicular to the direction of motion. We interpret the lack of n-γ angular correlations for fission fragments near closed shells as a weakening of the alignment process for spherical nuclei. Lastly, we have observed that statistical γ rays are emitted isotropically, indicating that the average angular momentum removed by this radiation is small. These results, and the analysis tools presented in this work, represent a stepping stone for future analysis of n-γ emission correlations and their connection to angular momentum properties.

Multinucleon transfer mechanism in Cf 250 + Th 232 collisions using the quantal transport description based on the stochastic mean-field approach

Production cross sections of heavy neutron-rich isotopes are calculated by employing quantal transport description in 250 Cf + 232 Th collisions. This quantal transport description is based on the stochastic mean-field approach, and it provides a microscopic approach beyond time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory to include mean-field fluctuations. Deexcitation of primary fragments is determined by employing the statistical GEMINI++ code. Here, calculations provide predictions for production cross sections of neutron rich transfermium isotopes without any adjustable parameters.
