Characterization of the Minimum Energy Paths and Energetics for the reaction of Vinylidene with Acetylene

The reaction of vinylidene (CH2C) with acetylene may be an initiating reaction in soot formation. We report minimum energy paths and accurate energetics for a pathway leading to vinylacetylene and for a number of isomers Of C4H4. The calculations use complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) derivative methods to characterize the stationary points and internally contacted configuration interaction (ICCI) and/or coupled cluster singles and doubles with a perturbational estimate of triple excitations (CCSD(T)) to determine the energetics. We find an entrance channel barrier of about 5 kcal/mol for the addition of vinylidene to acetylene, but no barriers above reactants for the reaction pathway leading to vinylacetylene.

Characterization of the Minimum Energy Path for the Reaction of Singlet Methylene with N2: The Role of Singlet Methylene in Prompt NO

We report calculations of the minimum energy pathways connecting CH2 + N2 to diazomethane and diazirine, for the rearrangement of diazirine to diazomethane, for the dissociation of diazirine to HCN2+H, and of diazomethane to CH2N+N. The calculations use Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) derivative methods to characterize the stationary points and Internally Contracted Configuration Interaction (ICCI) to determine the energetics. The calculations suggest a potential new source of prompt NO from the reaction CH2 with N2 to give diazirine, and subsequent reaction of diazirine with hydrogen abstracters to form doublet HCN2, which leads to HCN+N(S-4) on the previously studied CH+N2 surface. The calculations also predict accurate 0 K heats of formation of 77.7 kcal/mol and 68.0 kcal/mol for diazirine and diazomethane, respectively.

Characterization of the Minimum Energy Path for the Reaction of Singlet Methylene with N2: The Role of Singlet Methylene in Prompt NO

We report calculations of the minimum energy pathways connecting (1)CH2+N2 to diazomethane and diazirine, for the rearrangement of diazirine to diazomethane, for the dissociation of diazirine to HCN2+H, and of diazomethane to CH2N+N. The calculations use complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) derivative methods to characterize the stationary points and internally contracted configuration interaction (ICCI) to determine the energetics. The calculations suggest a potential new source of prompt NO from the reaction of (1)CH2 with N2 to give diazirine, and subsequent reaction of diazirine with hydrogen abstracters to form doublet HCN2, which leads to HCN+N(S-4) on the previously studied CH+N2 Surface. The calculations also predict accurate 0 K heats of formation of 77.7 kcal/mol and 68.0 kcal/mol for diazirine and diazomethane, respectively.

Benchmark Full Configuration-Interaction Calculations on HF and NH2

Full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations are performed at selected geometries for the (sup 1)Sigma(+) state of HCF and the (sup 2)B(sub 1) and (sup 3)A(sub 1) states NH2 using both DZ and DZP Gaussian basis sets. Higher excitations become more important when the bonds are stretched and the SCF reference becomes a poorer zeroth-order description of the wave function. The CASSCF-MRCI procedure gives excellent agreement with the FCI potentials, especially when corrected with a multireference analog of the Davidson correction.

Theoretical Study of the Electric Dipole Moment Function of the CIO Molecule

The potential energy function and electric dipole moment function (EDMF) are computed for CIO Chi(sup 2)Pi using several different techniques to include electron correlation. The EDMF is used to compute Einstein coefficients, vibrational lifetimes, and dipole moments in higher vibrational levels. Remaining questions concerning the position of the maximum of the EDMF may be resolved through experimental measurement of dipole moments of higher vibrational levels. The band strength of the 1-0 fundamental transition is computed to be 12 +/- 2 /sq cm atm in good agreement with three experimental values, but larger than a recent value of 5 /sq cm atm determined from infrared heterodyne spectroscopy. The theoretical methods used include SCF, CASSCF, multireference singles plus doubles configuration interaction (MRCI) and contracted CI, coupled pair functional (CPF), and a modified version of the CPF method. The results obtained using the different methods are critically compared.

Computed Minimum Energy Pathway for Isomerization in Ketene

A minimum energy pathway for interchange of the CH groups in ketene via a C2v structure has been obtained using complete active space self consistent field (CASSCF) derivative methods with a polarized valence double zeta basis set to define the reaction pathway followed by multi-reference internally contracted configuration interaction (ICCI) calculations with a [3s3p2d/3s2p] basis set to determine the energetics. Qualitatively, the C2v structure is found to be a shallow minimum on the potential energy surface separated from ketene by a small barrier (0.2 kcal/mol), a second minimum, and a larger barrier (3.0 kcal/mol). The minimum energy pathway leading from the C2v minimum to ketene starts by simultaneous rotation of the farther CH group out of the plane and away from the oxygen followed by increase of the CCO angle and subsequent 1,2-migration of the H of the nearer CH group toward the carbon of the farther CH group.

The Theoretical Transition Probabilities Between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(Sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) States of N2

The electronic transition moment functions between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) states of N2 are studied using the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (ICMRCI) method based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave-functions. The dependence of the moments on both the one and n-particle basis sets has been investigated in detail. The calculated radiative lifetimes for the vibrational levels of B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) are in excellent agreement with the most recent measurement of Euler and Pipkin (1983)

Towards the Synthesis and Identification of Tetrahedral N4

Tetrahedral (Td)-N4 has attracted attention as a high energy density material candidate. Although computational studies have shown Td-N4 to be a stable structure on the ground-state potential energy surface, it has yet to be experimentally observed. This study investigates possible synthetic pathways via excited state surfaces. Preliminary results include a comparison of vertical excitation energies from Td-N4 using CIS, CIS(D), CIS(3), LRCCSD, CASSCF, CASPT2, and MRCI ab initio methods. Previous studies have predicted weak IR vibrational intensities. Therefore, alternative detection schemes of Td-N4 are also investigated, such as UV and vibrational Raman spectroscopy.

On the Reaction of FNO2 with CH3, t-butyl, and C13H21

Theoretical studies are reported for the reaction of FN02 with the radicals CH3, t-butyl, and C13H21, which are templates for the radical site of a hydrogenated diamond surface. All structures axe fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) based on the B3LYP functional. Calibration calculations axe performed for CH3 + FNO2 using the coupled cluster approach, the the internally contracted multireference configuration. interaction method, and second order perturbation theory based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave function. These calibration calculations support the B3LYP approach for the calculation of bond energies, but show the B3LYP barrier is too low. Combining the calibration calculations with the larger clusters yields our best estimate of a barrier of about 10 kcal/mol. for the reaction of FNO2 with a radical site on hydrogenated diamond.

Comparison of DFT with Traditional Methods for the Calculation of Vibrational Frequencies and Bond Energies

The vibrational frequencies of MO2 are computed at many levels of theory, including HF, B3LYP, BP86, CASSCF, MP2, and CCSD(T). The computed results are compared with the available experimental results. Most of the methods fail for at least one state of the systems considered. The accuracy of the results and the origin of the observed failures are discussed. The B3LYP bond energies are compared with traditional methods for a variety of systems, ranging from FeCOn+ to SiCln and its positive ions. The cases where B3LYP differs from the traditional methods are discussed.

Gas-Phase Reaction Pathways and Rate Coefficients for the Dichlorosilane-Hydrogen and Trichlorosilane-Hydrogen Systems

As part of NASA Ames Research Center's Integrated Process Team on Device/Process Modeling and Nanotechnology our goal is to create/contribute to a gas-phase chemical database for use in modeling microelectronics devices. In particular, we use ab initio methods to determine chemical reaction pathways and to evaluate reaction rate coefficients. Our initial studies concern reactions involved in the dichlorosilane-hydrogen (SiCl2H2--H2) and trichlorosilane-hydrogen (SiCl2H-H2) systems. Reactant, saddle point (transition state), and product geometries and their vibrational harmonic frequencies are determined using the complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) electronic structure method with the correlation consistent polarized valence double-zeta basis set (cc-pVDZ). Reaction pathways are constructed by following the imaginary frequency mode of the saddle point to both the reactant and product. Accurate energetics are determined using the singles and doubles coupled-cluster method that includes a perturbational estimate of the effects of connected triple excitations (CCSD(T)) extrapolated to the complete basis set limit. Using the data from the electronic structure calculations, reaction rate coefficients are obtained using conventional and variational transition state and RRKM theories.

TiCl, TiH and TiH+ Bond Energies, a Test of a Correlation Consistent Ti Basis Set

Correlation consistent basis sets are developed for Ti atom. The polarization functions are optimized for the average of the 3F and 5F states. One series of correlation consistent basis sets is for 3d and 4s correlation, while the second series includes 3s and 3p correlation as well as 3d and 4s correlation. These basis sets are tested using the Ti 3F-5F separation and the dissociation energies of TiCl X4Phi, TiH X4Phi, and TiH(+) X3Phi. The CCSD(T) complete basis set limit values are determined by extrapolation. The Douglas Kroll approach is used to compute the scalar relativistic effect. Spin-orbit effects are taken from experiment and/or computed at the CASSCF level. The Ti 3F-5F separation is in excellent agreement with experiment, while the TiCl, TiH, and TiH(+) bond energies are in good agreement with experiment. Extrapolation with the valence basis set is consistent with other atoms, while including 3s and 3p correlation appears to make extrapolation.
