Observation of pressure-induced electron transfer in SnC 2 O 4

We examined the high pressure behavior of stannous oxalate via Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) inside a diamond anvil cell. Phase transitions were observed to occur near 2.6 and 15 GPa which were reversible upon decompression to ambient conditions. When further pressurized above 15 GPa, the colorless material sustains irreversible chemical alterations and becomes bright red colored – darkening at higher pressures. Another irreversible phase transition occurred above 20 GPa. Concomitant with color change of the sample, we observed a softening of the ν(C–C) modes of the C 2 O 4 2- anion via Raman spectroscopy. We performed a separate XAS experiment which indicates that the Sn 2+ cation undergoes a partial reduction of the 2+ oxidation state with pressure which persists when the sample was depressurized to ambient conditions. Thus, electron density within the C–C bond in the oxalate anion appears to migrate toward the tin cation with pressure. This observation suggests that pressure can offer a very controllable means to vary cation–anion and unit cell dimensions (and thus the electric interactions causing electron movement) and thus the pressure-induced synthesis of novel materials.

Role of CeNiSi 2 and BaNiSn 3 Structure Types in the Emergent Magnetism of the Homologous Series Ln n +1 M n X 3 n +1 :Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10

The synthesis and characterization of Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 , n =3 member of the homologous series Ln n+1 M n X 3n+1 (Ln = lanthanides, M = transition metal, X = tetrel), is reported. The structure can be modelled with the Cmcm space group adopting the Eu 2 Ni 2-x Sn 5 structure type, with lattice parameters of a = 4.3323 (15) Å, b = 35.507 (9) Å, and c = 4.3069 (12) Å. Members of the series for n > 2 consist of stacking of ordered (CeNiSi 2 type) and disordered (BaNiSn 3 / AuCu 3 type) subunits with the acting as a “spacer” between CeNiSi 2 subunits. Although neither CeFeGe 3 nor CeFe 0.63 Ge 2 order magnetically down to 2 K, Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 is an antiferromagnet below 3.6 K. To rationalize the emergent magnetism: (i) we established the Kondo and RKKY interaction dominant regions for the Ce analogues adopting the BaNiSn 3 and CeNiSi 2 by creating an electronic landscape for each, (ii) mapped the strained subunits, due to stacking, within the series. Here, we established the CeFeGe 3 subunit within Ce 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 contracts and is located within the Kondo-interaction dominant region, while the CeFe 0.63 Ge 2 subunit expands and is in the RKKY-interaction dominant region.

Molecular beam epitaxy and crystal structure of majority a -plane-oriented and substrate-strained Mn 3 Sn thin films grown directly on sapphire (0001)

The Kagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn has garnered much attention due to the presence of exciting properties such as anomalous Hall and Nernst effects. This paper discusses the synthesis of crystalline Mn 3 Sn thin films, prepared on Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrates at 453 ± 5°C using molecular beam epitaxy. The growth is monitored in situ using reflection high energy electron diffraction and measured ex situ using x-ray diffraction, Rutherford back-scattering, and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our analysis shows the in-plane lattice constants of a 1,M = 4.117 ± 0.027 Å and a 2,M = 4.943 ± 0.033 Å, which is a very unexpected result when compared to the bulk a-plane Mn 3 Sn. This indicates a strain in the film and makes it challenging to provide a straightforward explanation. In an effort to explain our results, we discuss two possible orientation relationships between the Mn 3 Sn films and the sapphire substrates. Samples prepared under these conditions appear to have smooth surfaces locally, but overall the film has a 3D island morphology. First-principles calculations provide atomic models of the Mn 3 Sn (112¯0) lattice on Al 2 O 3 (0001) high symmetry sites, indicating that the L3-R90° is the most stable configuration. A detailed discussion of the experimental data and theoretical results, as well as strain effects, is provided.

Single Crystal Growth of Synthetic Sulfide- and Phosphide-Based Minerals for Physical Measurements

In this work, we review recent advances in the use of high-temperature solution growth that allow for the growth of single crystalline samples of synthetic minerals. We outline how low-melting binary or ternary solutions are attractive solvents for solution growth and provide examples of the growth of bismuthinite (Bi 2 S 3 ), galena (PbS) and parkerite (Ni 3 Bi 2 S 2 ). We then focus on the Rh-S, Pd-S and Ni-P phase spaces to discuss how the low-melting regions near transition metal-main group eutectic compositions make excellent solvents for crystal growth of several binary and ternary minerals containing both high melting and volatile elements as well as for the discovery of new materials. We end by discussing the growth of synthetic canfieldite (Ag 8 SnS 6 ) and argyrodite (Ag 8 GeS 6 ) from Ag 2 S–Sn-S-based solutions.

Zn(SCN)2 crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one Zn(SCN)2 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. there are two inequivalent Zn2+ sites. In the first Zn2+ site, Zn2+ is bonded in a tetrahedral geometry to four N3- atoms. There is three shorter (1.97 Å) and one longer (1.98 Å) Zn–N bond length. In the second Zn2+ site, Zn2+ is bonded in a tetrahedral geometry to four S2- atoms. There are two shorter (2.38 Å) and two longer (2.39 Å) Zn–S bond lengths. There are four inequivalent C4+ sites. In the first C4+ site, C4+ is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one N3- and one S2- atom. The C–N bond length is 1.18 Å. The C–S bond length is 1.64 Å. In the second C4+ site, C4+ is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one N3- and one S2- atom. The C–N bond length is 1.18 Å. The C–S bond length is 1.64 Å. In the third C4+ site, C4+ is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one N3- and one S2- atom. The C–N bond length is 1.18 Å. The C–S bond length is 1.64 Å. In the fourth C4+ site, C4+ is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one N3- and one S2- atom. The C–N bond length is 1.18 Å. The C–S bond length is 1.64 Å. There are four inequivalent N3- sites. In the first N3- site, N3- is bonded in a linear geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. In the second N3- site, N3- is bonded in a linear geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. In the third N3- site, N3- is bonded in a linear geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. In the fourth N3- site, N3- is bonded in a linear geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. There are four inequivalent S2- sites. In the first S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted water-like geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. In the second S2- site, S2- is bonded in an L-shaped geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. In the third S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted water-like geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom. In the fourth S2- site, S2- is bonded in an L-shaped geometry to one Zn2+ and one C4+ atom.
