Preliminary investigation of zirconium boride ceramals for gas-turbine blade applications

Zirconium boride ZrB2 ceramals were investigated for possible gas-turbine-blade application. Included in the study were thermal shock evaluations of disks, preliminary turbine-blade operation, and observations of oxidation resistance. Thermal shock disks of the following three compositions were studied: (a) 97.5 percent ZrB2 plus 2.5 percent B by weight; (b) 92.5 percent ZrB2 plus 7.5 percent B by weight; and (c) 100 percent ZrB2. Thermal shock disks were quenched from temperatures of 1800 degrees, 2000 degrees, 2200 degrees, and 2400 degrees F. The life of turbine blades containing 93 percent ZrB2 plus 7 percent B by weight was determined in gas-turbine tests. The blades were run at approximately 1600 degrees F and 15,000 to 26,000 rpm. The thermal shock resistance of the 97.5 percent ZrB2 plus 2.5 percent boron ceramals compares favorably with that of TiC plus Co and TiC plus Ni ceramals. Oxidation of the disks during the thermal shock evaluation was slight for the comparatively short time (8.3 hr) up through 2000 degrees F. Oxidation of a specimen was severe, however, after 100 hours at 2000 degrees F. The turbine blade performance evaluation of the 93 percent ZrB2 plus 7 percent B composition was preliminary in scope ; no conclusions can be drawn.

Ternary borides and borohydrides for hydrogen storage and method of synthesis

A method and a system is provided for obtaining solid-state hydrogen storage and release in materials with at least theoretical loaded hydrogen densities of 11 wt % or greater that can deliver hydrogen and be recharged at moderate temperatures enabling incorporation into hydrogen storage systems suitable for transportation applications. These materials comprise ternary boride materials comprising certain light transition metals and alkaline or alkaline earth metals, and ideally have no or very little phase separation. A process of making these materials is also provided.

Establishing a Theoretical Landscape for Identifying Basal Plane Active 2D Metal Borides (MBenes) toward Nitrogen Electroreduction

Abstract To achieve efficient ammonia synthesis via electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), a qualified catalyst should have both high specific activity and large active surface area. However, integrating these two merits into one single material remains a big challenge due to the difficulty in balancing multiple reaction intermediates. Here, it is demonstrated that the boron‐analogues of MXenes, namely “MBenes”, could cope with the challenge and achieve the high activity and large reaction region simultaneously toward NRR. Using extensive density functional theory computations and taking 16 MBenes as representatives, it is identified that seven MBenes (CrB, MoB, WB, Mo 2 B, V 3 B 4 , CrMnB 2 , and CrFeB 2 ) not only have intrinsic basal plane activity for NRR with limiting potentials ranging from −0.22 to −0.82 V, but also possess superior capability of suppressing the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Particularly, different from the MXenes whose surface oxidation may block the active sites, once oxidized, these MBenes can catalyze NRR via the self‐activating process, reducing O*/OH* into H 2 O* under reaction conditions, and favoring the N 2 electroreduction. As a result, the exceptional activity and selectivity, high active area (≈10 19 m −2 ), and antioxidation nature render these MBenes as pH‐universal catalysts for NH 3 production without introducing any dopants and defects.

Dynamical Bonding Driving Mixed Valency in a Metal Boride

Abstract Samarium hexaboride is an anomaly, having many exotic and seemingly mutually incompatible properties. It was proposed to be a mixed‐valent semiconductor, and later a topological Kondo insulator, and yet has a Fermi surface despite being an insulator. We propose a new and unified understanding of SmB 6 centered on the hitherto unrecognized dynamical bonding effect: the coexistence of two Sm−B bonding modes within SmB 6 , corresponding to different oxidation states of the Sm. The mixed valency arises in SmB 6 from thermal population of these distinct minima enabled by motion of B. Our model simultaneously explains the thermal valence fluctuations, appearance of magnetic Fermi surface, excess entropy at low temperatures, pressure‐induced phase transitions, and related features in Raman spectra and their unexpected dependence on temperature and boron isotope.

Spontaneous dynamical disordering of borophenes in MgB2 and related metal borides

Abstract Layered boron compounds have attracted significant interest in applications from energy storage to electronic materials to device applications, owing in part to a diversity of surface properties tied to specific arrangements of boron atoms. Here we report the energy landscape for surface atomic configurations of MgB 2 by combining first-principles calculations, global optimization, material synthesis and characterization. We demonstrate that contrary to previous assumptions, multiple disordered reconstructions are thermodynamically preferred and kinetically accessible within exposed B surfaces in MgB 2 and other layered metal diborides at low boron chemical potentials. Such a dynamic environment and intrinsic disordering of the B surface atoms present new opportunities to realize a diverse set of 2D boron structures. We validated the predicted surface disorder by characterizing exfoliated boron-terminated MgB 2 nanosheets. We further discuss application-relevant implications, with a particular view towards understanding the impact of boron surface heterogeneity on hydrogen storage performance.

Two-dimensional ruthenium boride: a Dirac nodal loop quantum electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Catalysts with high carrier mobility, high activity, and an active basal plane have been highly sought for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, combining these advantages into one single material is a grand challenge. Herein, using first principles computations, we predicted that a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac nodal loop semimetal, namely the RuB 4 monolayer, is promising as a superior catalyst for the HER. Our systematic computations showed that the single layer RuB 4 is thermodynamically, dynamically, mechanically, and thermally stable and presents multiple Ru and B sites for the HER on the basal plane. The estimated Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption at a Ru site is approaching zero (–8.8 meV), suggesting its excellent HER performance. The RuB 4 monolayer is a Dirac nodal loop semimetal with high Fermi velocities, which can accelerate charge transfer between catalysts and reaction intermediates. The RuB 4 monolayer is an auxetic material with an out-of-plane negative Poisson's ratio, implying its novel mechanical properties. Finally, this work provides an example of using a Dirac nodal loop semimetal for high-performance HER catalysts, which is a promising alternative to the known catalysts with trivial metallic properties.
