Birefringent Glass‐Engraved Quasi‐Linear Nanograting Metasurface Based on Self‐Organizing Process for Large Aperture High Power Laser Applications

All-glass metasurface “nanograting” structures that exhibit birefringence in the formed layer are reported. The key enabler of this work is ion beam processing at an angle sufficiently off-normal incidence, inducing self-assembly of a deposited metal layer into quasi-linear metallic features that can function as an etching mask. As a result, a fused silica metasurface, monolithic to the underlying substrate, is demonstrated at 375 nm wavelength to exhibit a phase delay angle of 30° between the principal axes. The capability of an angled etch mask replenishment process is also demonstrated for achieving deeper etch depth and for increasing the grating period, another first – to the best of the knowledge. This is the first display of a technology capable of fabricating glass-engraved near-linear grating structure with a feature-to-feature period as small as 118.6 nm. Furthermore, this technology has the potential to generate grating-like structures with periods as small as 12.4 nm, as demonstrated here with reactive ion beam processing assisted mask assembly. Furthermore, these structures are shown to have reflectivity < 0.4% across the wavelength band 350 nm – 1000 nm. Such a technology can enable laser-durable grating structures for the deep-UV and even down to soft X-ray wavelengths.

New Probe of Cosmic Birefringence Using Galaxy Polarization and Shapes

We propose a novel statistical method to measure cosmic birefringence and demonstrate its power in probing parity violation due to axions. Exploiting an empirical correlation between the integrated radio polarization direction of a spiral galaxy and its apparent shape, we devise an unbiased minimum-variance estimator for the rotation angle, which should achieve an uncertainty of 5°–15° per galaxy. In conclusion, large galaxy samples from the forthcoming SKA continuum surveys, together with optical shape catalogs, promise a comparable or even lower noise power spectrum for the rotation angle than in the CMB Stage-IV (CMB-S4) experiment, with different systematics.

BICEP/Keck XXI: Constraints on early-Universe parity violation from multipole-dependent birefringence

We present the first constraints on multipole-dependent cosmic birefringence using CMB polarization data from the BK18 dataset, which combines observations from BICEP2, Array, and BICEP3 at frequencies of 95, 150, and 220 GHz. Photon coupling to an axionlike field leads to the rotation of CMB polarization, inducing nonzero cross-correlations. We show that a multipole-dependent rotation imprints a distinct signature in the polarization spectra that can be constrained. Specifically, we consider an early dark energy (EDE) scenario in which a pseudoscalar field couples to photons through a Chern-Simons interaction, generating a polarization rotation with multipole dependence. We introduce a phenomenological as a step function, obtaining constraints on the step function size consistent with zero, with uncertainties less than (68% CL). In addition, using multi-frequency , , and cross spectra, along with robust BICEP/ foreground treatment and likelihood framework, we derive constraints on the axion-photon coupling amplitude for several choices of EDE parameters. For the baseline best-fit value from the 2018 analysis, we obtain (68% CL), consistent with previous limits.

Solid-phase heteroepitaxy of oriented Sb 2 Se 3 on GaAs for birefringent thin films

Here, we investigate the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation of antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) on UHV-prepared GaAs (001) substrates. In the bulk orthorhombic form, Sb 2 Se 3 is a layered quasi-1D semiconductor with highly anisotropic properties of interest for optical and electronic devices. We find that an amorphous layer deposited by molecular beam epitaxy annealed at or above 230 °C yields a textured-epitaxial structure among some randomly oriented domains. The textured-epitaxial Sb 2 Se 3 grains are oriented with the covalently bonded “1D axis” constrained in-plane to GaAs [110] and with multiple van der Waals (hk0) orientations out-of-plane. The same texture was achieved exclusively without randomly oriented grains using continuous-wave laser radiation, highlighting the use of thermal and optical methods to yield anisotropic crystalline Sb 2 Se 3 films directly from the amorphous phase. Polarized reflectance and polarized microscopy confirm the unique state of in-plane birefringence in the crystallized thin film. Overall, we show that solid-phase heteroepitaxy provides additional pathways to the integration of low-symmetry chalcogenide semiconductors for demanding applications where the inherent anisotropy needs to be preserved.

Scalable waveplate for ultraviolet applications using laser-imprinted birefringence in silica

A method for fabrication of large-aperture waveplate suitable for operation in the near-ultraviolet spectral region is demonstrated. The waveplate was fabricated using femtosecond direct laser writing of bulk fused silica. This method enables the precise control of the induced birefringence, which is introduced via the generation of nanopores with geometrical features that are controlled by the laser processing parameters. The resulting structures also introduce a small loss of transmission that is on the order of 4% at 351 nm. The laser-induced–damage threshold in the nanosecond regime was found to approach that of the native fused-silica substrate, which makes it a suitable candidate for polarization control in laser fusion research applications.

Sprayable birefringent coating enables strain measurements on large surfaces

Birefringent coating for strain measurements on large surfaces contains constituents that can be premixed and sprayed as a single component with conventional paint spray equipment. Elevated temperatures are not required for spraying or curing of the coating material which has long pot life.
