Syntheses and degradations of fluorinated heterocyclics

The relative stability of two ring systems, the triazine rings and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles, which offer potential crosslinks useful for curing perfluoroalkyl ether elastomers, has been investigated. Tris (perfluoro-n-heptyl)-s-triazine, the perfluoroether substituted-s-triazine, 1,4-bis/(5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl/benzene, its perfluoroalkyl ether substituted analog, and 3,5-bis-(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and subjected to thermal and oxidative degradation at 235 and 325 C and to hydrolytic degradation at 235 C. The perfluoroalkyl ether substituted triazine and 3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were found to be stable under all conditions investigated.

Synthesis of thermally stable polymers

The reaction of bis triazo linediones with divinyl esters and substituted styrenes was investigated. Twenty new polymers were derived via reaction of two previously synthesized bis triazol linediones and four new bis atriazol linediones with eight styrenes. The structure and polymer properties of these thermally stable polymers was examined. The reaction of triazo linediones with enol esters was also considered.

Synthesis of perfluoroalkylene aromatic diamines

Analogues of methylene dianilines were synthesized, in which the methylene group between the two aromatic nuclei was replaced by various perfluoroalkylene linkage. The hydrolytic thermal, and thermal oxidative stabilities of PMR Polyimides derived from these diamines were determined. Three types of PMR Polyimide discs were fabricated from the dimethyl ester of 3,3', 4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid, the methyl ester of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, and one of the following three diamines: methyl dianiline, 1,3-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane, and 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane. The polyimide based on 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane exhibited the best hydrolytic, thermal, and thermal oxidative stability as determined by moisture uptake and thermogravimetric analysis.

Development of phosphorylated adhesives

The synthesis of epoxy prepolymers containing phosphorus was carried out in such a manner as to provide adhesives containing at least 5 percent of this element. The purpose of this was to impart fire retardant properties to the adhesive. The two epoxy derivatives, bis(4-glycidyl-oxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide and bis(4-glycidyl-2-methoxyphenyl)phenylphosphonate, and a curing agent, bis(3-aminophenyl)methylphosphine oxide, were used in conjunction with one another and along with conventional epoxy resins and curing agents to bond Tedlar and Polyphenylethersulfone films to Kerimid-glass syntactic foam-filled honeycomb structures. Elevated temperatures are required to cure the epoxy resins with the phosphorus-contaning diamine; however, when Tedlar is being bonded, lower curing temperatures must be used to avoid shrinkage and the concomitant formation of surface defects. Thus, the phosphorus-containing aromatic amine curing agent cannot be used alone, although it is possible to use it in conjunction with an aliphatic amine which would allow lower cure temperatures to be used. The experimental epoxy resins have not provided adhesive bonds quite as strong as those provided by Epon 828 when compared in peel tests, but the differences are not very significant. It should be noted, if optimum properties are to be realized. In any case the fire retardant characteristics of the neat resin systems obtained are quite pronounced, since in most cases the self-extinguishing properties are evident almost instantly when specimens are removed from a flame.

Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Aromatic Siloxane Polymers

Silphenylene-siloxane polymers can be prepared by a condensation reaction of a diol 1,4-bis(hydroxydimethylsilyl)benzene and a silane bis(dimethylamino)dimethylsilane. Using a stepwise condensation technique, a polymer (R=CH3) with a molecular weight in excess of 1.0 x 1 million has been produced. The polymer exhibits increased thermal stability, compared to a methyl siloxane polymer without the aromatic phenyl ring in the backbone. The use of bis(dimethylamino)methylvinylsilane should allow for ready crosslinking at the vinyl sites (R=-CH=CH2) introduced into the backbone. However, under the conditions of the reaction system a high molecular weight polymer was not obtained or the polymer underwent a crosslinking process during the synthesis.

Ultra-high molecular weight silphenylene-siloxane polymers

Silphenylene-siloxane copolymers with molecular weights above one million were prepared using a two stage polymerization technique. The technique was successfully scaled up to produce 50 grams of this high polymer in a single run. The reactive monomer approach was also investigated using the following aminosilanes: bis(dimethylamino)dimethylsilane, N,N-bis(pyrrolidinyl)dimethylsilane and N,N-bis(gamma-butyrolactam)dimethylsilane). Thermal analyses were performed in both air and nitrogen. The experimental polymers decomposed at 540 to 562 C, as opposed to 408 to 426 C for commercial silicones. Differential scanning calorimetry showed a glass transition (Tg) at -50 to -55 C for the silphenylene-siloxane copolymer while the commercial silicones had Tg's at -96 to -112 C.

Process for crosslinking and extending conjugated diene-containing polymers

A process using a Diels-Alder reaction which increases the molecular weight and/or crosslinks polymers by reacting the polymers with bisunsaturated dienophiles is developed. The polymer comprises at least 75% by weight based on the reaction product, has a molecular weight of at least 5000 and a plurality of conjugated 1,3-diene systems incorporated into the molecular structure. A dienophile reaction with the conjugated 1,3-diene of the polymer is at least 1% by weight based on the reaction product. Examples of the polymer include polyesters, polyamides, polyethers, polysulfones and copolymers. The bisunsaturated dienophiles may include bis-maleimides, bis maleic and bis tumaric esters and amides. This method for expanding the molecular weight chains of the polymers, preferable thermoplastics, is advantageous for processing or fabricating thermoplastics. A low molecular weight thermoplastic is converted to a high molecular weight plastic having improved strength and toughness for use in the completed end use article.

Chemistry and properties of poly(arylene ether benzoxazole)s

Several new poly(arylene ether benzoxazole)s (PAEBs) were prepared by the nucleophilic displacement reaction of activated aromatic difluorides with two novel bis(hydroxyphenyl benzoxazole), using potassium carbonate. The 6F-containing PAEBs exhibited better solubility and higher Tgs than did the 6,6'-bis-(2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole)-derived polymers. Several of the 6,6'bis(2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole)-derived polymers exhibited crystallinity by DSC and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. Unorientated thin film properties of the 6F-containing PAEBs were comparable to those of other 6F-containing PAEBS that were previously reported. The chemistry and the physical and mechanical properties of the above polymers are discussed.

Data communication network at the ASRM facility

This report describes the simulation of the overall communication network structure for the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) facility being built at Yellow Creek near Iuka, Mississippi as of today. The report is compiled using information received from NASA/MSFC, LMSC, AAD, and RUST Inc. As per the information gathered, the overall network structure will have one logical FDDI ring acting as a backbone for the whole complex. The buildings will be grouped into two categories viz. manufacturing intensive and manufacturing non-intensive. The manufacturing intensive buildings will be connected via FDDI to the Operational Information System (OIS) in the main computing center in B_1000. The manufacturing non-intensive buildings will be connected by 10BASE-FL to the OIS through the Business Information System (BIS) hub in the main computing center. All the devices inside B_1000 will communicate with the BIS. The workcells will be connected to the Area Supervisory Computers (ASCs) through the nearest manufacturing intensive hub and one of the OIS hubs. Comdisco's Block Oriented Network Simulator (BONeS) has been used to simulate the performance of the network. BONeS models a network topology, traffic, data structures, and protocol functions using a graphical interface. The main aim of the simulations was to evaluate the loading of the OIS, the BIS, and the ASCs, and the network links by the traffic generated by the workstations and workcells throughout the site.

The effect of diamic acid additives on the dielectric constant of polyimides

The effect of six selected diamic acids additives (including 2,2-prime bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride-aniline (An); 4,4-prime-oxydiphthalic anhydride-An, 3,3-prime diaminodiphenyl sulfone-phthalic anhydride (PA); 4,4-prime-oxydianiline-PA; 2,2-bis 4(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl hexafluoropropane-PA; and 2,2-bis 4(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl hexafluoropropane-PA) on the dielectric constants of low-dielectric-constant polyimide resins was evaluated. It was found that the effect of the incorporation of the diamic acids on reducing the dielectric constant of polyimides may be limited as the dielectric constant of the base resin itself becomes very low. The additives were found to lower the resin's values of glass transition temperature, with no effect on thermooxidative stability.

High Modulus and High T(sub g) Thermally Stable Polymers from p-Ethynyl-Terminated Rigid-Rod Monomers

Novel p-ethynyl-substituted rigid rod monomers were studied by pressure Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), ThermoGravimetric Analysis (TGA), IsothermoGravimetric Analysis (IGA), and TGA-IR. These monomers, 4,4'-bis(((4-ethynylphenyl)carbonyl)oxy)biphenyl, designated 1, 1,5-bis-(((4-ethynylphenyl)carbonyl)oxy)naphthalene, designated 2, and bis(4-ethynylphenyl)pyromellitimide, designated 3, were polymerized in the solid state. Thermal polymerization in N2 or air produced highly cross-linked resins with polymerization exotherms centered between 212 and 276 C. The (delta)H's of polymerization of these resins in air were found to be double those in N2. When monomers 1 and 2 were heated in air from 23 to 750 C at 10 C/min, the main decomposition product was carbon dioxide, evolving at a maximum rate between 500 and 600 C; water was also detected as a decomposition product. Void-free neat resin moldings, designated lp to 3p, were made by compression molding the monomers and then heating them. The resulting polymers were highly cross-linked, and their glass transition temperatures (T(sub g)) were much higher than their polymerization temperatures. Using ThermoMechanical Analysis (TMA), we found that polymers lp to 3p had T(sub g)'s of 422, 329, and 380 C, respectively. The thermal and thermooxidative stabilities improved when lp to 3p were postcured in N2 (the postcured polymers were designated 1pp to 3pp). The Linear Thermal Expansions (LTE) for lp and 3p were 1% between 23 and 420 C. Using rheological analysis, we could not clearly detect the T(sub g)'s of lp to 3p because their moduli dropped only slightly between 23 and 490 C and the changes in tan beta were very low. Because of high cross-link density, their moduli changed little as the resins went from a glassy to a rubbery state. Their shear storage moduli in air ranged from 0.82 (3p, 3pp) to 1.6 GPa (lpp) at 23 C, from 0.16 (2p) to 0.7GPa(lpp) at 380 C, and from 0.18(lpp)to 0.6GPa(2p) at 490 C. Finally, these novel-p-ethynyl polymers exhibited an excellent combination of high T(sub g), low LTE, and high thermooxidative stability. Most notably, 3pp lost only 3% of its initial weight when it was aged for 500 h at 288 C in air.

Syntheses and Degradations of Fluorinated Heterocyclics: Perfluoroalkyl and Perfluroalkylether-1,2,4-Oxadiazoles - 2

3-Perfluoroalkylether-5-perfluoro-n-heptyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole and 3,S-bis(perfluoroalkylether)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and characterized. The 3, 5-bis(perfluoroalkylether)-l, 2,4-oxadiazole was subjected to thermal, thermal oxidative, and hydrolytic degradations at 235 and 325 C and was found to be stable under these conditions as evidenced by practically quantitative recovery of the test samples. In the presence of Jet-A fuel at 235 C a low degree of degradation, approximately 4%, was observed. 3,5-Bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole was found to be stable to attack by water at 325 C; however in air in the presence of jet-A at 235 C the extent of degradation was in excess of 10%.

Mass Spectra of Some Perfluoroalkyl and Perfluoroalkylether Substituted 1,2,4-Oxadiazoles

Electron impact fragmentation patterns were obtained for 1,4-bis[(5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl- benzene, its perfluoroalkylether substituted analogue, 3,5-bis(perfluoroalkyl)-, 3,5-bis(perfluoroalkylether)- and 3-perfluoroalkylether-5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles. In the compounds containing the phenylene group the molecular ion constituted the base peak; the main process was the breakdown of the oxadiazole ring with concurrent liberation of the perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkylether nitrile molecule; cleavage of the fluorinated chain ot to the oxadiazole ring was found to take place to a considerable degree. In the perfluorinated 1,2,4-oxadiazoles cleavage beta to the oxadiazole ring occurred preferentially; fragmentation of the ring itself took place to a limited degree only. The 3-perfluoroalkylether-5-perfluoroalkyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole appeared to undergo the primary beta-cleavage exclusively at the perfluoroalkylether sidechain.
