Strongly Chiral Liquid Crystals in Nanoemulsions

We report Liquid crystal (LC) emulsions represent a class of confined soft matter that exhibit exotic internal organizations and size-dependent properties, including responses to chemical and physical stimuli. Past studies have explored micrometer-scale LC emulsion droplets but little is known about LC ordering within submicrometer-sized droplets. This paper reports experiments and simulations that unmask the consequences of confinement in nanoemulsions on strongly chiral LCs that form bulk cholesteric and blue phases (BPs). A method based on light scattering is developed to characterize phase transitions of LCs within the nanodroplets. For droplets with a radius to the pitch ratio (R v /p 0 ) as small as 2/3, the BP-to-cholesteric transition is substantially suppressed, leading to a threefold increase of the BP temperature interval relative to bulk behavior. Complementary simulations align with experimental findings and reveal the dominant role of chiral elastic energy. For R v /p 0 ≈ to 1/3, a single LC phase forms below the clearing point, with simulations revealing the new configuration to contain a τ -1/2 disclination that extends across the nanodroplet. These findings are discussed in the context of mechanisms by which polymer networks stabilize BPs and, more broadly, for the design of nanoconfined soft matter.

Holomorphic waves of black hole microstructure

We obtain the largest families constructed to date of $$ \frac{1}{8} $$ 1 8 -BPS solutions of type IIB supergravity. They have the same charges and mass as supersymmetric D1-D5-P black holes, but they cap off smoothly with no horizon. Their construction relies on the structure of superstratum states, but allows the momentum wave to have an arbitrary shape. Each family is based on an arbitrary holomorphic function of one variable. More broadly, we show that the most general solution is described by two arbitrary holomorphic functions of three variables. After exhibiting several new families of such “holomorphic superstrata,” we reformulate the BPS backgrounds and equations in holomorphic form and show how this simplifies their structure. The holomorphic formulation is thus both a fundamental part of superstrata as well as an effective tool for their construction. In addition, we demonstrate that holomorphy provides a powerful tool in establishing the smoothness of our solutions without constraining the underlying functions. We also exhibit new families of solutions in which the momentum waves of the superstrata are highly localized at infinity but diffuse and spread into the infra-red limit in the core of the superstratum. Our work also leads to some results that can be tested within the dual CFT.

Multi-matrix correlators and localization

Abstract We study generating functions of$$ \frac{1}{4} $$ 1 4 -BPS states in$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 super Yang-Mills at finiteNby attempting to generalize the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral to multiple commuting matrices. This allows us to compute the overlaps of two or more generating functions; such calculations arise in the computation of two-point correlators in the free-field limit. We discuss the four-matrix HCIZ integral in the U(2) context and lay out a prescription for finding a more general formula forN> 2. We then discuss its connections with the restricted Schur polynomial operator basis. Our results generalize readily to arbitrary numbers of matrices, opening up the opportunity to study more generic BPS operators.

Orbit averaging coherent states: holographic three-point functions of AdS giant gravitons

We study correlation functions of two AdS giant gravitons in AdS 5 × S 5 and a BPS supergravity mode using holography. In the gauge theory these are described by BPS correlators of Schur polynomials of fully-symmetric representations and a single trace operator. We find full agreement between the semiclassical gravity and gauge theory computations at large N, for both diagonal and off-diagonal structure constants. Our analysis in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM provides a simpler derivation to the results in the literature, and it can be readily generalized to operators describing bound states of AdS giant gravitons as well as bubbling geometries.

Inscribing geodesic circles on the face of the superstratum

Abstract We use families of circular null geodesics as probes of a family of microstate geometries, known as (1,0, n) superstrata. These geometries carry a left-moving momentum wave and the behavior of some of the geodesic probes is very sensitive to this background wave. The left-moving geodesics behave like BPS particles and so can be placed in circular orbits anywhere in the geometry and actually “float” at fixed radius and angle in the three-dimensional “capped BTZ” geometry. The right-moving geodesics behave like non-BPS particles. We show that they provide a simple geometric characterization of the black-hole bound: when the momentum charge of the geometry is below this bound, such geodesics can be placed anywhere, but exceeding the bound, even by a small amount, means these geodesics are restricted to the deep interior of the geometry. We also show that for left-moving string probes, the tidal forces remain comparable with those of global AdS 3 . Nevertheless, for some of these probes, the “bumps” in the geometry induce an oscillatory mass term and we discuss how this can lead to chaotic scrambling of the state of the string.

Nonrenormalization theorem for $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) interface entropy

We derive a formula for the half-BPS interface entropy between any pair of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories on the same conformal manifold. This generalizes the diastasis formula derived in [1] for $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) theories, which is restricted to the conformal submanifolds generated by either chiral or twisted chiral multiples of $\mathcal{N}$ = (2, 2) supersymmetry. To derive the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) formula, we use the fact that the conformal manifold of $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) theories is symmetric and quaternionic-Kähler and that its isotropy group contains the SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) external automorphism of the $\mathcal{N}$ = (4, 4) superconformal algebra. As an application of the formula, we prove a supersymmetric non-renormalization theorem, which explains the observation in [2] that the interface entropy for half-BPS Janus solutions in type IIB supergravity on AdS 3 × S 3 × T 4 coincides with the corresponding quantity in their free conformal field limits.

The quantum $\mathrm{UV}$-$\mathrm{IR}$ map for line defects in $$ \mathfrak{gl} $$(3)-type class $\mathcal{S}$ theories

We consider the quantum UV-IR map for line defects in class S theories of $\mathfrak{gl}$(3)-type. This map computes the protected spin character which counts framed BPS states with spin for the bulk-defect system. We give a geometric method of computing this map motivated by the physics of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and compute it explicitly in various examples. As a spin-off we propose a new way of computing a certain specialization of the HOMFLY polynomial for links in $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a sum over BPS webs attached to the link.

Probing supersymmetric black holes with surface defects

It has long been conjectured that the large N deconfinement phase transition of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills corresponds via AdS/CFT to the Hawking-Page transition in which black holes dominate the thermal ensemble, and quantitative evidence of this has come through the recent matching of the superconformal index of $\frac{1}{16}$-BPS states to the supersymmetric black hole entropy. Here we introduce the half-BPS Gukov-Witten surface defect as a probe of the superconformal index, which also serves as an order parameter for the deconfinement transition. This can be studied directly in field theory as a modification of the usual unitary matrix model or in the dual description as a D3-brane probe in the background of a (complex) supersymmetric black hole. Using a saddle point approximation, we determine our defect index in the large N limit as a simple function of the chemical potentials and show independently that it is reproduced by the renormalized action of the brane in the black hole background. Along the way, we also comment on the Cardy limit and the thermodynamics of the D3-brane in the generalized ensemble. The defect index sharply distinguishes between the confining and the deconfining phases of the gauge theory and thus is a supersymmetric non-perturbative order parameter for these large N phase transitions which deserves further investigation. Finally, our work provides an example where the properties of a black hole coupled to an external system can be analyzed precisely.

Microstrata

Abstract Microstrata are the non-extremal analogues of superstrata: they are smooth, non-extremal (non-BPS) solitonic solutions to IIB supergravity whose deep-throat limits approximate black holes. Using perturbation theory and numerical methods, we construct families of solutions using a consistent truncation to three-dimensional supergravity. The most general families presented here involve two continuous parameters, or amplitudes, and four quantized parameters that set the angular momenta and energy levels. Our solutions are asymptotic to the vacuum of the D1-D5 system: AdS 3 ×S 3 × 𝕋 4 . Using holography, we show that the they are dual to multi-particle states in the D1-D5 CFT involving a large number of mutually non-BPS supergravitons and we determine the anomalous dimensions of these states from the binding energies in supergravity. These binding energies are uniformly negative and depend non-linearly on the amplitudes of the states. In one family of solutions, smoothness restricts some of the fields to lie on a special locus of the parameter space. Using precision holography we show that this special locus can be identified with the multi-particle states constructed via the standard OPE of the single-particle constituents. Our numerical analysis shows that microstrata are robust at large amplitudes and the solutions can be obtained to very high precision.

Lifting at higher levels in the D1D 5 CFT

The D1D 5 P system has a large set of BPS states at its orbifold point. Perturbing away from this ‘free’ point leads to some states joining up into long supermultiplets and lifting, while other states remain BPS. We consider the simplest orbifold which exhibits this lift: that with N = 2 copies of the free c = 6 CFT. We write down the number of lifted and unlifted states implied by the index at all levels upto 6. We work to second order in the perturbation strength λ. For levels upto 4, we find the wavefunctions of the lifted states, their supermultiplet structure and the value of the lift. All states that are allowed to lift by the index are in fact lifted at order O(λ 2 ). We observe that the unlifted states in the untwisted sector have an antisymmetry between the copies in the right moving Ramond ground state sector, and extend this observation to find classes of states for arbitrary N that will remain unlifted to O(λ 2 )

String junctions suspended between giants

We construct (p, q) string junction solutions suspended between both sphere and AdS giant gravitons in AdS 5 × S 5 . Our results extend easily to more general half BPS geometries of LLM type. These carry angular momentum in the directions of the worldvolume of the giant gravitons. We argue that these are charged under a central extension of the supersymmetry algebra similar to the one that has appeared in the works of Beisert for the $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 spin chain. We also argue that they are BPS with respect to this central extension. We show that apart from some kinematical details, the junctions end up solving the same minimization problem that appears in the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM. Their mass and shape is independent of the angular momentum Q that the junction carries.

Towards quantum black hole microstates

Abstract We study the cohomology of local BPS operators in$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 Yang-Mills theory. The finiteNcohomologies consist of the graviton part (subject to the stringy exclusion principle) and the rest which may describe black hole microstates in quantum AdS/CFT. We construct an infinite tower of non-graviton cohomologies in the SU(2) theory and study to what extent they simulate quantum black holes. We find signals for partial no-hair behaviors by showing that certain gravitons are forbidden to dress these cohomologies. This is in qualitative agreement with the perturbative hairs allowed around black holes, which also leads us to a natural setup to construct hairy BPS black holes. The cohomologies are simpler to study in the BMN matrix model truncation of the classical field theory.

Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and blown up surface defects

The relationship of two dimensional quantum field theory and isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems has a long history. Recently four-dimensional N = 2 gauge theories joined the party in a multitude of roles. In this paper we study the vacuum expectation values of intersecting half-BPS surface defects in SU(2) theory with N f = 4 fundamental hypermultiplets. We show they form a horizontal section of a Fuchsian system on a sphere with 5 regular singularities, calculate the monodromy, and define the associated isomonodromic tau-function. Using the blowup formula in the presence of half-BPS surface defects, initiated in the companion paper, we obtain the GIL formula, establishing an unexpected relation of the topological string/free fermion regime of supersymmetric gauge theory to classical integrability.

Water and salt transport properties of pentiptycene-containing sulfonated polysulfones for desalination membrane applications

A series of pentiptycene-containing disulfonated polysulfone copolymers (PENT-BP) were synthesized via condensation polymerization. Water and salt transport properties (solubility, diffusivity and permeability) were characterized for acid-form membranes (PENT-BP(H)) and compared with triptycene-based sulfonated polysulfones (TRP-BP(H)) and a non-iptycene-containing 4,4'-biphenol-based series (BPS(H)) of polysulfones to investigate the effect of pentiptycene on membrane performance. At comparable water content, the PENT-BP(H) exhibited increased water and salt permeability due to the additional free volume introduced by the pentiptycene units. Enhanced water/salt permeability selectivity of PENT-BP(H) series was also observed due to a significantly higher diffusivity selectivity. At comparable water permeance (P w D ~ 8 X 10 -6 cm 2 /s), the salt rejection of PENT-BP (H) copolymers obtained from dead-end filtration reached 91–93% at 400 psi, higher than that of a corresponding BPS(H) series. This study suggests that incorporation of iptycene moieties into polymer backbone is an effective strategy to enhance desalination membrane performance.

Genomics discovery of giant fungal viruses from subsurface oceanic crustal fluids

Abstract The oceanic igneous crust is a vast reservoir for microbial life, dominated by diverse and active bacteria, archaea, and fungi. Archaeal and bacterial viruses were previously detected in oceanic crustal fluids at the Juan de Fuca Ridge (JdFR). Here we report the discovery of two eukaryotic Nucleocytoviricota genomes from the same crustal fluids by sorting and sequencing single virions. Both genomes have a tRNATyr gene with an intron (20 bps) at the canonical position between nucleotide 37 and 38, a common feature in eukaryotic and archaeal tRNA genes with short introns (<100 bps), and fungal genes acquired through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events. The dominance of Ascomycota fungi as the main eukaryotes in crustal fluids and the evidence for HGT point to these fungi as the putative hosts, making these the first putative fungi-Nucleocytoviricota specific association. Our study suggests active host-viral dynamics for the only eukaryotic group found in the subsurface oceanic crust and raises important questions about the impact of viral infection on the productivity and biogeochemical cycling in this ecosystem.

Equivalence of quantum barren plateaus to cost concentration and narrow gorges

Optimizing parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) is the leading approach to make use of near-term quantum computers. However, very little is known about the cost function landscape for PQCs, which hinders progress towards quantum-aware optimizers. In this work, we investigate the connection between three different landscape features that have been observed for PQCs: (1) exponentially vanishing gradients (called barren plateaus (BPs)), (2) exponential cost concentration about the mean, and (3) the exponential narrowness of minima (called narrow gorges). Here we analytically prove that these three phenomena occur together, i.e., when one occurs then so do the other two. A key implication of this result is that one can numerically diagnose BPs via cost differences rather than via the computationally more expensive gradients. More broadly, our work shows that quantum mechanics rules out certain cost landscapes (which otherwise would be mathematically possible), and hence our results could be interesting from a quantum foundations perspective.

Fluxbranes, generalized symmetries, and Verlinde’s metastable monopole

The stringy realization of generalized symmetry operators involves wrapping “branes at infinity”. We argue that in the case of continuous (as opposed to discrete) symmetries, the appropriate objects are fluxbranes. We use this perspective to revisit the phase structure of Verlinde’s monopole, a proposed particle satisfies the Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) condition when gravity is decoupled, but is non-BPS and metastable when gravity is switched on. Geometrically, this monopole is obtained from branes wrapped on locally stable but globally trivial cycles of a compactification geometry. The fluxbrane picture allows us to characterize electric (respectively magnetic) confinement (respectively screening) in the 4D theory as a result of monopole decay. In the presence of the fluxbrane, this decay also creates lower-dimensional fluxbranes, which in the field theory is interpreted as the creation of an additional topological field theory sector. Nonperturbative random matrix model of N = 2 JT supergravity

It is shown how to nonperturbatively define a random matrix model that captures key physics of N = 2 Jackiw-Teitelboim supergravity, going well beyond the perturbative topological expansion defined recently by Turiaci and Witten. A decomposition into an infinite family of certain multicritical models is derived, leading to the definition of a nonlinear ordinary differential equation from which the physics may be computed. Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) states are naturally described by the model. The nonperturbative completions of the spectral densities for non-BPS multiplets are readily extracted.
