The BANDIT computer program for the reduction of matrix bandwidth for NASTRAN

A computer program, BANDIT, is described which was developed for use as a preprocessor to NASTRAN to automatically resequence the grid point numbers for reduced matrix bandwidth. The BANDIT program accepts a standard NASTRAN data deck as input, resequences the grid point numbers for reduced bandwidth, and generates a set of SEQGP cards for insertion into the NASTRAN bulk data deck. BANDIT uses the Cuthill-McKee strategy for resequencing grid points. The program is operational on the CDC 6000 series of computers, the IBM 360, and the Univac 1108.

Bandwidth and threshold calculations for angle-tuned parametric oscillators.

The bandwidth of angle-tuned optical parametric oscillators, in some cases, is limited by the noncolinear interaction of the pump, signal, and idler beams, which results when the nonlinear material is rotated relative to the pump beam. To determine this bandwidth, a theoretical expression for the pump power threshold is derived in the near field limit taking into account double refraction for a noncolinear interaction. Angle tuning can be done by (1) rotating the crystal and mirrors as a unit, or by (2) rotating the crystal only. Expressions for determining the tuning rate and threshold increase for both tuning methods are derived.

Comparing bandwidth requirements for binary baseband signals.

The percentage of total power passed through ideal band-limited channels with bandwidths equal to various multiples of the bit rate is examined for 14 unique binary baseband signaling schemes. The channel bandwidth required to pass 5 percent of the total power is determined as a measure of the need for near-dc channel response. Conclusions are reached as to which signals would be most suitable for high-rate magnetic tape recording.

Matrix bandwidth and profile reduction

This program, REDUCE, reduces the bandwidth and profile of sparse symmetric matrices, using row and corresponding column permutations. It is a realization of the algorithm described by the authors elsewhere. It was extensively tested and compared with several other programs and was found to be considerably faster than the others, superior for bandwidth reduction and as satisfactory as any other for profile reduction.

Strong scintillations in astrophysics. 4. Cross-correlation between different frequencies and finite bandwidth effects

The cross correlation of the intensity fluctuations between different frequencies and finite bandwidth effects on the intensity correlations based on the Markov approximation were calculated. Results may be applied to quite general turbulence spectra for an extended turbulent medium. Calculations of the cross-correlation function and of finite bandwidth effects are explicitly carried out for both Gaussian and Kolmogorov turbulence spectra. The increases of the correlation scale of intensity fluctuations are different for these two spectra and the difference can be used to determine whether the interstellar turbulent medium has a Gaussian or a Kolmogorov spectrum.

A bandwidth-compressive modulation system

The phrase 'bandwidth-compressive modulation' means that the compression is achieved not by removing redundancy from the data (data compression), but rather by modulating the carrier phase and amplitude with blocks of data bits. The modulation described here is quadrature amplitude shift keying (QASK), a logical extension of quadrature phase shift keying, (QPSK, or quadriphase). QASK is a cost-effective form of combined phase-and-amplitude modulation. That is, n-bit QASK, like most phase-amplitude forms of modulation, requires considerably less transmitter power than comparably performing n-PSK, while among the class of all n-bit phase-modulation types, n-bit QASK performs nearly optimally but requires the least circuit complexity. A simple, unique microwave transmitter is described which provides high-rate QASK modulation with 4:1 bandwidth compression. A suppressed carrier multiple-loop QASK receiver provides the necessary phase tracking, automatic gain control (AGC), and symbol timing.

An algorithm for reducing the bandwidth and profile of a sparse matrix

A new algorithm for reducing the bandwidth and profile of a sparse matrix is described. Extensive testing on finite element matrices indicates that the algorithm typically produces bandwidth and profile which are comparable to those of the commonly-used reverse Cuthill-McKee algorithm, yet requires significantly less computation time.

Independent gain and bandwidth control of a traveling wave maser

An X-band traveling wave maser of the folded-comb type is presented, with two figure-eight coils for gain and bandwidth control. One figure-eight coil covers the full lengths of the comb structure for bandwidth adjustment of an external magnetic field. The other coil covers a central half of the comb structure for independent gain adjustment of the external magnetic field. The half of each figure-eight coil at the turn around end of the comb structure is oriented to aid the external magnetic field, and the half of each coil at the input-output end of the comb structure is oriented to buck the external magnetic field. The maser is pumped in the push-push mode with two different frequencies.

A tutorial introduction to Very Long Base-line Interferometry (VLBI) using bandwidth synthesis

The basic principles underlying very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) are described by using bandwidth synthesis. The basic signal processing approach is detailed. Summarized results show the tradeoff of measurement accuracy with spanned bandwidth, source strength, antenna size and efficiency, system noise temperature, and data volume. Minimization of required antenna time for a given baseline measurement accuracy is also discussed.

A bandwidth compressive modulation system using multi-amplitude minimum shift keying /MAMSK/

A bandwidth compressive modem making use of multi-amplitude minimum shift keying (MAMSK) has been designed and implemented in a laboratory environment at microwave frequencies. This system achieves a substantial bandwidth reduction over binary PSK and operates within 0.5 dB of theoretical performance. A number of easily implemented microwave transmitters have been designed to generate the required set of 16 signals. The receiver has been designed to work at 1 Mbit/s and contains the necessary phase tracking, AGC, and symbol synchronization loops as well as a lock detector, SNR estimator and provisions for differential decoding. This paper describes this entire system and presents the experimental results.

The human as a detector of changes in variance and bandwidth

The detection of changes in random process variance and bandwidth was studied. Psychophysical thresholds for these two parameters were determined using an adaptive staircase technique for second order random processes at two nominal periods (1 and 3 seconds) and damping ratios (0.2 and 0.707). Thresholds for bandwidth changes were approximately 9% of nominal except for the (3sec,0.2) process which yielded thresholds of 12%. Variance thresholds averaged 17% of nominal except for the (3sec,0.2) process in which they were 32%. Detection times for suprathreshold changes in the parameters may be roughly described by the changes in RMS velocity of the process. A more complex model is presented which consists of a Kalman filter designed for the nominal process using velocity as the input, and a modified Wald sequential test for changes in the variance of the residual. The model predictions agree moderately well with the experimental data. Models using heuristics, e.g. level crossing counters, were also examined and are found to be descriptive but do not afford the unification of the Kalman filter/sequential test model used for changes in mean.

Continuous control of phase-locked-loop bandwidth

Tracking loop filter with continuous bandwidth control smooths transition from wide to narrow band. Circuit was designed for Space Shuttle where bandwidth varied between 320 Hz for acquisition and 20 Hz for tracking. Field-effect transitor (FET) acts as voltage controlled variable resistance, changing time constant of filter between phase detector and voltage-controlled oscillator in phase-locked loop.

Equivalent statistical bandwidths of conventional low-pass filters

Values of the equivalent statistical bandwidths of Butterworth up to ten poles and Chebyshev up to eight poles low-pass filters for six different passband ripple levels have been computed and tabulated along with the corresponding noise bandwidths. The results obtained can be used for estimating the mean-square error resulting from power spectrum measurements employed in the sensitivity analysis of microwave radiometer systems.

Coherence bandwidth loss in transionospheric radio propagation

In this report a theoretical model is developed that predicts the single-point, two-frequency coherence function for transionospheric radio waves. The theoretical model is compared to measured complex frequency correlation coefficients using data from the seven equispaced, phase-coherent UHF signals transmitted by the Wideband satellite. The theory and data are in excellent agreement. The theory is critically dependent upon the power-law index, and the frequency coherence data clearly favor the comparatively small spectral indices that have been consistently measured from the wideband satellite phase data. A model for estimating the pulse delay jitter induced by the coherence bandwidth loss is also developed and compared with the actual delay jitter observed on synthesized pulses obtained from the Wideband UFH comb. The results are in good agreement with the theory. The results presented in this report, which are based on an asymptotic theory, are compared with the more commonly used quadratic theory. The model developed and validated in this report can be used to predict the effects of coherence bandwidth loss in disturbed nuclear environments. Simple formulas for the resultant pulse delay jitter are derived that can be used in predictive codes.

A wide bandwidth electrostatic field sensor for lightning research

Data obtained from UHF Radar observation of direct-lightning strikes to the NASA F-106B airplane have indicated that most of the 690 strikes acquired during direct-strike lightning tests were triggered by the aircraft. As an aid in understanding the triggered lightning process, a wide bandwidth electric field measuring system was designed for the F-106B by implementing a clamped-detection signal processing concept originated at the Air Force Cambridge Research Lab in 1953. The detection scheme combines the signals from complementary stator pairs clamped to zero volts at the exact moment when each stator pair is maximally shielded by the rotor, a process that restores the dc level lost by the charge amplifier. The new system was implemented with four shutter-type field mills located at strategic points on the airplane. The bandwidth of the new system was determined in the laboratory to be from dc to over 100 Hz, whereas past designs had upper limits of 10 Hz to 100 Hz. To obtain the undisturbed electric field vector and total aircraft charge, the airborne field mill system is calibrated by using techniques involving results from ground and flight calibrations of the F-106B, laboratory tests of a metallized model, and a finite-difference time-domain electromagnetic computer code.

The minimum bandwidths of auroral kilometric radiation

The bandwidths of the discrete spectral components of the auroral kilometric radiation can sometimes be as narrow as 5 Hz. Since this would imply an apparent source thickness of substantially less than the wavelength, it is inconsistent with the previous explanation for such discrete components based simply upon vertical localization of a cyclotron source. Instead, such narrow bandwidths can only be explained by radio lasing.

Bandwidth efficient block codes for M-ary PSK modulation

A class of bandwidth efficient block codes for M-ary PSK modulation is presented. A soft-decision decoding for this class of codes is devised. Some specific short codes for Quad Phase Shift Key (QPSK), 8-PSK and 16-PSK modulations are constructed. These codes have good minimum squared Euclidean distances and provide 2 to 5.8 dB coding gains over uncoded QPSK modulation without (or with little) bandwidth expansion. The complete weight distributions of these specific codes are determined. Based on these weight distributions, their error probabilities are evaluated. Some of these codes have simple trellis structures and hence can be decoded by Viterbi decoding algorithm with relatively simple implementation. Moreover, the codes are very suitable for use as inner codes for various cascaded coding schemes with Reed-Solomon codes as outer codes.
