Search for large missing transverse momentum in association with one top-quark in proton-proton collisions at s $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes a search for events with one top-quark and large missing transverse momentum in the final state. Data collected during 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS experiment from 13 TeV proton–proton collisions at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb –1 are used. Two channels are considered, depending on the leptonic or the hadronic decays of the W boson from the top quark. The obtained results are interpreted in the context of simplified models for dark-matter production and for the single production of a vector-like T quark. In the absence of significant deviations from the Standard Model background expectation, 95% confidence-level upper limits on the corresponding production cross-sections are obtained and these limits are translated into constraints on the parameter space of the models considered.

Measurement of VH, H → $b\bar{b}$ production as a function of the vector-boson transverse momentum in 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottomquark pairs and an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z , decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum. The measurements are performed in kinematic fiducial volumes defined in the ‘simplified template cross-section’ framework. The results are found using 79.8 fb ₋1 of proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. All measurements are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions, and limits are set on the parameters of an effective Lagrangian sensitive to modifications of the Higgs boson couplings to the electroweak gauge bosons.

Constraints on mediator-based dark matter and scalar dark energy models using $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector

Constraints on selected mediator-based dark matter models and a scalar dark energy model using up to 37 fb ₋1 $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015-2016 are summarised in this paper. The conclusions of experimental searches in a variety of final states are interpreted in terms of a set of spin-1 and spin-0 single-mediator dark matter simplified models and a second set of models involving an extended Higgs sector plus an additional vector or pseudo-scalar mediator. The searches considered in this paper constrain spin-1 leptophobic and leptophilic mediators, spin-0 colour-neutral and colour-charged mediators and vector or pseudo-scalar mediators embedded in extended Higgs sector models. In this case, also $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV pp collision data are used for the interpretation of the results. The results are also interpreted for the first time in terms of light scalar particles that could contribute to the accelerating expansion of the universe (dark energy).

Search for single production of vector-like quarks decaying into Wb in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for singly produced vector-like quarks Q , where Q can be either a T quark with charge +2/3 or a Y quark with charge ₋4/3, is performed in proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb ₋1 , recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The analysis targets Q → Wb decays where the W boson decays leptonically. No crtical deviation from the expected Standard Model background is observed. Upper limits are set on the QWb coupling strength and the mixing between the Standard Model sector and a singlet T quark or a Y quark from a ( B, Y ) doublet or a ( T, B, Y ) triplet, taking into account the interference effects with the Standard Model background. The upper limits set on the mixing angle are as small as |sin θ L | = 0.18 for a singlet T quark of mass 800 GeV, |sin θ R | = 0.17 for a Y quark of mass 800 GeV in a ( B, Y ) doublet model and |sin θL| = 0.16 for a Y quark of mass 800 GeV in a ( T, B, Y ) triplet model. Within a ( B, Y ) doublet model, the limits set on the mixing parameter |sin θ R | are comparable with the exclusion limits from electroweak precision observables in the mass range between about 900 GeV and 1250 GeV.

Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying via H ± → τ ± ν τ in the τ+jets and τ+lepton final states with 36 fb -1 of $pp$ collision data recorded at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV with the ATLAS experiment

Charged Higgs bosons produced either in top-quark decays or in association with a top-quark, subsequently decaying via H ± → τ ± ν τ , are searched for in 36.1 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. Depending on whether the top-quark produced together with H ± decays hadronically or leptonically, the search targets τ+jets and τ+lepton final states, in both cases with a hadronically decaying τ-lepton. No evidence of a charged Higgs boson is found. For the mass range of mH ± = 90–2000 GeV, upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the production cross-section of the charged Higgs boson times the branching fraction β(H ± → τ ± ν τ ) in the range 4.2–0.0025 pb. In the mass range 90–160 GeV, assuming the Standard Model cross-section for $ t\bar{t} $ production, this corresponds to upper limits between 0.25% and 0.031% for the branching fraction β(t→bH ± )×β(H ± →τ ± ν τ ).

Search for the Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson and decaying into two spin-zero particles in the H → aa → 4b channel in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of spin-zero particles, H → aa, where the a-boson decay sin to b-quarks promptly or with a mean proper lifetime cτa up to 6 mm and has a mass in the range of 20–60 GeV, is presented. The search is performed in events where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a W or Z boson, giving rise to a signature of one or two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and multiple jets from b-quark decays. The analysis is based on the dataset of proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb-1. No significant excess of events above the Standard Model background prediction is observed, and 95% confidence-level upper limits are derived for the production cross-sections for pp → WH, ZH and their combination, times the branching ratio of the decay chain H → aa → 4b. For a-bosons which decay promptly, the upper limit on the combination of cross-sections for WH and ZH times the branching ratio of H → aa → 4b ranges from 3.0 pb for ma = 20 GeV to 1.3 pb for ma = 60 GeV, assuming that the ratio of WH to ZH cross-sections follows the Standard Model prediction. For a-bosons with longer proper lifetimes, the most stringent limits are 1.8 pb and 0.68 pb, respectively, at cτa ~ 0.4 mm.

Angular analysis of B$0\atop{d}$ → K*μ + μ - decays in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

An angular analysis of the decay B$0\atop{d}$ → K*μ + μ - is presented, based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The study is using 20.3 fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected during 2012 at centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. Measurements of the K* longitudinal polarisation fraction and a set of angular parameters obtained for this decay are presented. The results are compatible with the Standard Model predictions.

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon cross section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using 36 fb -1 of ATLAS data

The differential cross section for isolated-photon production in pp collisions is measured at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb -1 . The differential cross section is presented as a function of the photon transverse energy in different regions of photon pseudorapidity. The differential cross section as a function of the absolute value of the photon pseudorapidity is also presented in different regions of photon transverse energy. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations from Jetphox and Sherpa as well as next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD calculations from Nnlojet are compared with the measurement, using several parameterisations of the proton parton distribution functions. The predictions provide a good description of the data within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Search for Higgs boson pair production in the γγ$b\overline{b} $ final state with 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment

A search is performed for resonant and non-resonant Higgs boson pair production in the γγ$b\overline{b} $ final state. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess relative to the Standard Model expectation is observed. The observed limit on the non-resonant Higgs boson pair cross-section is 0.73 pb at 95% confidence level. This observed limit is equivalent to 22 times the predicted Standard Model cross-section. The Higgs boson self-coupling (κ λ = λ HHH /λ HHH SM ) is constrained at 95% confidence level to -8.2 < κ λ < 13.2. For resonant Higgs boson pair production through X→HH→γγ$b\overline{b} $, the limit is presented, using the narrow-width approximation, as a function of mX in the range 260 GeV < m X < 1000 GeV. The observed limits range from 1.1 pb to 0.12 pb over this mass range. Open image in new window

Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into top and bottom quarks at $ \sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for charged Higgs bosons heavier than the top quark and decaying via H ± → tb is presented. The data analysed corresponds to 36.1 fb -1 of pp collisions at √s=13 TeV and was recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The production of a charged Higgs boson in association with a top quark and a bottom quark, pp → tbH ± , is explored in the mass range from m H ± = 200 to 2000 GeV using multi-jet final states with one or two electrons or muons. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and how likely these are to have originated from hadronisation of a bottom quark. Multivariate techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events. No significant excess above the background-only hypothesis is observed and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross-section times branching ratio of a charged Higgs boson as a function of its mass, which range from 2.9 pb at m H ± = 200 GeV to 0.070 pb at m H ± = 2000 GeV. The results are interpreted in two benchmark scenarios of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Measurement of the Zγ → $\mathcal{v}$$\bar{v}$γ production cross section in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector and limits on anomalous triple gauge-boson couplings

The production of Z bosons in association with a high-energy photon ( Z γ production) is studied in the neutrino decay channel of the Z boson using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The analysis uses a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Candidate Z γ events with invisible decays of the Z boson are selected by requiring significant transverse momentum (ρ τ ) of the dineutrino system in conjunction with a single isolated photon with large transverse energy (Ε τ ). The rate of Z γ production is measured as a function of photon Ε τ , dineutrino system pT and jet multiplicity. Here, evidence of anomalous triple gauge-boson couplings is sought in Z γ production with photon Ε τ greater than 600 GeV. No excess is observed relative to the Standard Model expectation, and upper limits are set on the strength of ZZ γ and Z γγ couplings.
