Machine Learning Accelerated First-Principles Study of the Hydrodeoxygenation of Propanoic Acid

The complex reaction network of catalytic biomass conversions often involves hundreds of surface intermediates and thousands of reaction steps, greatly hindering the rational design of metal catalysts for these conversions. Here, we present a framework of machine learning (ML)-accelerated first-principles studies for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of propanoic acid over transition metal surfaces. The microkinetic model (MKM) is initially parametrized by ML-predicted energies and iteratively improved by identifying the rate-determining species and steps (RDS), computing their energies by density functional theory (DFT), and reparameterizing the MKM until all the RDS are computed by DFT. The Gaussian process (GP) model performs significantly better than the linear ridge regression model for predicting both the adsorption free energies and transition state free energies. Parameterized with energies from the GP model, only 5–20% of the full reaction network has to be computed by DFT for the MKM to possess DFT-level accuracy for the TOF and dominant reaction pathway. While the linear ridge regression model performs worse than the GP model, its performance is greatly improved when only transition states are predicted by the regression model and adsorption energies are computed by DFT. Overall, we find that a high accuracy in adsorption free energies is more important for a reliable MKM than a high accuracy in TS free energies. Lastly, based on the GP model with GOH and GCHCHCO as catalyst descriptors, we build two-dimensional volcano plots in activity and selectivity that can help design promising alloy catalysts for HDO reactions of organic acids.

Utilization of the CW magnetrons as coherent RF sources for superconducting RF accelerators

CW magnetrons designed and optimized for industrial heaters, driven by an injection-locking signal, were suggested to power Superconducting RF (SRF) cavities. However, the CW magnetrons, which are regenerative generators, are intended to operate in self-excitation mode, so, for reliable starting they use a large regenerative gain, causing a large regenerative instability in operation. Thus, power supply ripple, even shot noise, etc., lead to multiple sidebands forming a quasi-continuous noise spectrum at the carrier frequency. Therefore, in the traditionally used mode of operation and control, such magnetrons are inapplicable for powering high Q-factor SRF cavities. A new approach to operation and control of CW magnetrons considering non-stationary processes during start-up and operation makes it possible to find a mode of almost coherent RF generation of tubes with a significant reduction in regenerative instability and noise and increased efficiency. In our work is presented substantiation for the newly developed mode with an analysis of the new approach based on experimental results. •In this article, for the first time, non-stationary, regenerative processes are considered during the start-up and operation of CW magnetrons for powering high-Q superconducting RF cavities.•An analytical study, confirmed by experiments, showed that the traditionally used modes of starting and operating CW magnetrons are not suitable for powering high-Q superconducting RF cavities.•In fact, to make CW magnetrons suitable for such cavities, the physics of starting and operating CW magnetrons must be changed. This has been demonstrated in our work.•In developing the Stimulated Coherent Generation Mode [NIM A 980 (2020) 164366], we have shown the suitability of this mode for starting and operating CW magnetrons for high-Q superconducting RF cavities.•Analytical analysis, verified experimentally, substantiates in our article the suitability of the “Mode of stimulated coherent generation” of CW magnetrons for powering high-Q superconducting cavities in pulsed and continuous modes.

Light-absorbing impurities accelerating glacial melting in southeastern Tibetan Plateau

Deposition of light-absorbing particles on glacier surfaces poses a series of adverse impacts on the cryospheric environment, climate and human health. Broad attention of the scientific community has been paid on insoluble light-absorbing impurities (ILAIs) in snow and ice on glaciers over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, systematic investigation of ILAIs in snowpack of glaciers on the TP is scarce. In this study, the properties and darkening effect of ILAIs in snowpack on glaciers are extensively investigated in the southeast of TP. Results show that ILAIs concentrations in multiple types of snow and ice samples were significantly different. Snowpit depths varied substantially from one profile to another during May and June 2016. The average concentrations of ILAIs in snowpits increase as snow melting progresses. Black carbon (BC) and dust cause snow albedo reduction more in snow with larger grain size Re. Based on a radiative transfer model calculation, the average albedo reduction induced by BC in the snowpack was 0.141 ± 0.02, and associated daily maximum radiative forcing (RF) was 72.97 ± 12.7 W m-2. BC is a controlling light-absorbing factor in snowpack and causes substantial albedo reduction and thus the associated daily maximum RF. The maximum reduction of snow cover duration was 4.56 ± 0.71 days caused by BC and dust in snowpack in southeastern TP. The average mass absorption cross-section (MAC) of BC from multiple snowpits was 3.26 ± 0.46 m2 g-1, which represents a typical value of MAC in snow on glaciers, but it is type-dependent of snow/ice samples. Tropospheric aerosols vertically extended up to 8 km over the TP and its surrounding areas, which indicates the transport of aerosols from remote sources through elevated pathways. A large amount of carbon stored in the brittle glaciers can be potentially released with meltwater runoff under a warming climate. This study provides a new insight for investigating carbonaceous and light-absorbing particles in glacierization areas.
