Injection locking and coupling dynamics in superconducting nanowire-based cryogenic oscillators

Oscillators designed to function at cryogenic temperatures play a critical role in superconducting electronics and quantum computing by providing stable, low-noise signals with minimal energy loss. Here, in this work, we present a comprehensive numerical study of injection locking and mutual coupling dynamics in superconducting nanowire (ScNW)-based cryogenic oscillators. Using the design space of a standalone ScNW-based oscillator, we investigate two critical mechanisms that govern frequency synchronization and signal coordination in cryogenic computing architectures: (1) injection locking induced by an external AC signal with a frequency near the oscillator's natural frequency, and (2) the mutual coupling dynamics between two ScNW oscillators under varying coupling strengths. We identify key design parameters—such as shunt resistance, nanowire inductance, and coupling strength—that govern the locking range. Additionally, we examine how the amplitude of the injected signal affects the amplitude of the locked oscillation, offering valuable insights for power-aware oscillator synchronization. Furthermore, we analyze mutual synchronization between coupled ScNW oscillators using capacitive and resistive coupling elements. Our results reveal that the phase difference between oscillators can be controlled by tuning the coupling strength, enabling programmable phase-encoded information processing. These findings could enable building ScNW-based oscillatory neural networks, synchronized cryogenic logic blocks, and on-chip cryogenic resonator arrays.

Tunable Microwave Conductance of Nanodomains in Ferroelectric PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 Thin Film

Ferroelectric materials exhibit spontaneous polarization that can be switched by electric field. Beyond traditional applications as nonvolatile capacitive elements, the interplay between polarization and electronic transport in ferroelectric thin films has enabled a path to neuromorphic device applications involving resistive switching. A fundamental challenge, however, is that finite electronic conductivity may introduce considerable power dissipation and perhaps destabilize ferroelectricity itself. In this work, tunable microwave frequency electronic response of domain walls injected into ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PbZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 ) on the level of a single nanodomain is revealed. Tunable microwave response is detected through first-order reversal curve spectroscopy combined with scanning microwave impedance microscopy measurements taken near 3 GHz. Contributions of film interfaces to the measured AC conduction through subtractive milling, where the film exhibited improved conduction properties after removal of surface layers, are investigated. Using statistical analysis and finite element modeling, we inferred that the mechanism of tunable microwave conductance is the variable area of the domain wall in the switching volume. These observations open the possibilities for ferroelectric memristors or volatile resistive switches, localized to several tens of nanometers and operating according to well-defined dynamics under an applied field.

Evaluation of Contact Resistance and Fin Effectiveness of Enhanced, Brazed "Dogbone" Fin and Serpentine Tube Heat Exchangers for Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Applications

The energy consumption due to air conditioning is projected to increase by 1.3 and 4.5 times by 2050 compared to 2010 for members and non-members of the Organization of Economic Coordination and Development (OECD), respectively. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions must be carefully managed to minimize their hazardous contribution to climate change. Air conditioners (AC) and heat pumps (HP) contribute with direct GHG emissions through systemic refrigerant leakage, which consequently degrades the system’s performance and therefore increases its indirect GHG emissions as well. To address this issue, the goals of new systems include minimizing leakage risk, using low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants such as natural refrigerants, and increasing system efficiency. This paper presents part of the efforts in the development of a brazed “dogbone” fin to continuous serpentine tube heat exchanger (HX) for AC/HP applications. The main advantages of such technology are: 1) The potential to reduce 90% or more of the tube return-bends brazed joints compared to conventional tube-fin heat exchangers, thus minimizing leakage vulnerability, enabling the use of natural refrigerants like Propane and Ammonia that carry other concerning risks of flammability and toxicity ; and 2) The brazed fin to the tube joints should yield very low contact resistance. In order to quantify and estimate the impacts of contact resistance and fin effectiveness, a numerical-experimental study is investigated. The novel enhanced brazed “dog-bone” fin is compared to an equivalent pressure expanded fin. The results showed that the expanded fin has consistently greater effective heat transfer but greater contact resistance as well. Furthermore, the brazed fins have up to 20% lower pressure drop. The trade-off comparison shows that the thermal-hydraulic ratio between the two fins is equivalent for air velocities below 2m/s; for greater velocities, however, the expanded fin is favored since it has less fin efficiency penalty. For HVAC&R applications, the air velocities are typically low which makes the proposed technology competitive and a viable option in the pursuit of refrigerant leakage reduction.

A PCB-Embedded 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET Half-Bridge Package for a 22 kW AC–DC Converter

This article presents the design and analysis of a double-side-cooled printed circuit board (PCB) embedded silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET half-bridge package with low loop inductances and an integrated gate driver. The 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET dies used in the half-bridge package are embedded in the PCB using AT&S's patented technique. The dies are cooled and electrically connected to traces in the PCB through copper-filled microvias. The design methodology accounts for both electrical and thermal performance, limiting the power-loop inductance to 2.3 nH and the maximum package temperature to less than the 175 °C limit. The integration of the gate drive circuitry allows for a high power density and 2.2 nH gate-loop inductances. At 0.12 K/W, the measured junction-to-case thermal resistance with double-sided cooling is 57% lower than that of a TO-247 package. Under similar operating conditions, the PCB-embedded half-bridge package also achieves a 5.6 times lower voltage overshoot and a 0.5% higher peak efficiency than a TO-247-based half-bridge. This article reports the first demonstration of PCB-embedded 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET packages in buck, boost, and ac–dc converters. Furthermore, the prototype three-phase ac–dc converter for an electric vehicle on-board charger is composed of six PCB-embedded half-bridge packages and achieves an efficiency of 98.2% and a power density of 182 W/in 3 .

Canted Eu magnetic structure in EuMnSb 2

Magnetic ordering breaks the time-reversal symmetry, greatly impacting material topological properties. Here, we report the investigation of the magnetic properties of the layered EuMnSb 2 , which has two sets of magnetic sublattices. Both the magnetization and electrical resistivity reveal two phase transitions with one at T N,Eu ~21K and the other at T N,Mn ~346K. Single crystal neutron diffraction refinement indicates that both transitions are originated from magnetic ordering. Below T N,Mn , the Mn sublattice forms the C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with moments [(4.5±0.6)μB at 7 K] pointing along the a axis. Below T N,Eu , the Eu sublattice forms the canted A-type AFM structure with moments [(5.9±0.8)μB at 7 K] lying in the ac plane but pointing (41 ± 1)° away from the a axis. Quantitative analysis indicates that the spin-spin correlation length, while anisotropic, has long-range characteristic in all directions for both the Eu and Mn sublattices.

Dependence of Linker Length and Composition on Ionic Conductivity and Lithium Deposition in Single-Ion Conducting Network Polymers

In this report, single-ion conducting electrolytes stand as promising alternatives to state-of-the-Art electrolytes in lithium batteries, although a single-ion conducting material with high Li + conductivity, stability in contact with lithium, and suitable mechanical properties has been slow to emerge. Here, we describe the synthesis of a series of single-ion conducting network polymers from the reaction of tetrakis(4-(chloromethyl)-2,3,5,6-Tetrafluorophenyl)borate with oligoethylene glycoxide linkers Li 2 O[(CH 2 CH 2 )O] n (n = 1, 2, 3, 9, and 22). Polymers with the longest linkers (n = 9 and 22; ANP-9 and ANP-10, respectively) form materials with conductivities of ~ 10 -6 S cm -1 at 100 °C. With the addition of 65 wt % propylene carbonate (PC), all the network polymers in the series exhibit high conductivities at ambient temperatures, with the n = 1 material (ANP-6) achieving a bulk ionic conductivity of 2.5 x 10 -4 S cm -1 at 25 °C. More conductive single-ion conducting gels could be prepared by using the less coordinating pentanediol dilithium salt as a linker (ANP-11; σ = 3.5 x 10 -4 S cm -1 at 25 °C), although this material exhibited a surprisingly high interfacial resistance in contact with a lithium electrode. In contrast, the gel formed with ANP-6 is notably stable in contact with metallic lithium electrodes, displays a lithium-ion transference number of unity, and boasts a wide electrochemical stability window of greater than 4.5 V. Temperature-dependent ac impedance analysis reveals that the ionic conductivity of this material-and likely the other gels in the series-matches closely to a Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher temperature model.

Calorimetry can detect the early onset of hydrolysis in hybrid supercapacitors with aqueous electrolytes

This study investigates the effect of cation species on the onset of electrolyte hydrolysis in hybrid supercapacitors with aqueous electrolytes using isothermal operando calorimetry. The cells consisted of a positive α-MnO 2 cryptomelane electrode and a negative activated carbon (AC) electrode with either 0.5 M K 2 SO 4 or 0.5 M Cs 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolytes. They were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling. In addition, the instantaneous heat generation rate at each electrode was measured using a custom isothermal operando calorimeter. Heat generation associated with resistive losses (Joule heating) and reversible ion adsorption/desorption was clearly identified. For larger potential windows, an endothermic dip, attributed to the onset of hydrolysis, was observed at the positive α-MnO 2 electrode where K + and Cs + ions engaged in fast surface redox reactions. Interestingly, this endothermic dip appeared at 1.8 V and 2.0 V for K 2 SO 4 and Cs 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolytes, respectively. The difference in the stable operating potential window was attributed to thinner solvation shell around Cs + cation than for K + thus reducing the amount of water present near the electrodes as ions partially shed their solvation shells during adsorption. The early onset of hydrolysis could be observed by isothermal operando calorimetry before it could be observed with conventional electrochemical methods.

Neutralization profiles of HIV-1 viruses from the VRC01 Antibody Mediated Prevention (AMP) trials

The VRC01 Antibody Mediated Prevention (AMP) efficacy trials conducted between 2016 and 2020 showed for the first time that passively administered broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) could prevent HIV-1 acquisition against bnAb-sensitive viruses. HIV-1 viruses isolated from AMP participants who acquired infection during the study in the sub-Saharan African (HVTN 703/HPTN 081) and the Americas/European (HVTN 704/HPTN 085) trials represent a panel of currently circulating strains of HIV-1 and offer a unique opportunity to investigate the sensitivity of the virus to broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) being considered for clinical development. Pseudoviruses were constructed using envelope sequences from 218 individuals. The majority of viruses identified were clade B and C; with clades A, D, F and G and recombinants AC and BF detected at lower frequencies. We tested eight bnAbs in clinical development (VRC01, VRC07-523LS, 3BNC117, CAP256.25, PGDM1400, PGT121, 10–1074 and 10E8v4) for neutralization against all AMP placebo viruses (n = 76). Compared to older clade C viruses (1998–2010), the HVTN703/HPTN081 clade C viruses showed increased resistance to VRC07-523LS and CAP256.25. At a concentration of 1μg/ml (IC80), predictive modeling identified the triple combination of V3/V2-glycan/CD4bs-targeting bnAbs (10-1074/PGDM1400/VRC07-523LS) as the best against clade C viruses and a combination of MPER/V3/CD4bs-targeting bnAbs (10E8v4/10-1074/VRC07-523LS) as the best against clade B viruses, due to low coverage of V2-glycan directed bnAbs against clade B viruses. Overall, the AMP placebo viruses represent a valuable resource for defining the sensitivity of contemporaneous circulating viral strains to bnAbs and highlight the need to update reference panels regularly. Our data also suggests that combining bnAbs in passive immunization trials would improve coverage of global viruses.

Nonlinear dynamics and dissipation of a curvilinear vortex driven by a strong time-dependent Meissner current

Here, we report numerical simulations of large-amplitude oscillations of a trapped vortex line under a strong ac magnetic field $\textit{H(t) = H}$ sin$\textit{ωt}$ parallel to the surface. The power dissipated by an oscillating vortex segment driven by the surface ac Meissner currents was calculated by taking into account the nonlinear vortex line tension, vortex mass, and a nonlinear Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) viscous drag coefficient $\textit{η(v)}$. We show that the LO decrease of $\textit{η(v)}$ with the vortex velocity $\textit{v}$ can radically change the field dependence of the surface resistance R i ( H ) caused by trapped vortices. At low frequencies, $R_i(H)$ exhibits a conventional increase with $\textit{H}$, but as $\textit{ω}$ increases, the surface resistance becomes a nonmonotonic function of $\textit{H}$ which decreases with $\textit{H}$ at higher fields. The effects of frequency, pin spacing, and the mean-free path $l_i$ on the field dependence of $R_i(H)$ were calculated. It is shown that, as the surface gets dirtier and $l_i$ decreases, the anomalous drop of $R_i(H)$ with $\textit{H}$ shifts to lower fields which can be much smaller than the lower critical magnetic field. Our numerical simulations also show that the LO decrease of $\textit{η(v)}$ with $\textit{v}$ can cause a vortex bending instability at high field amplitudes and frequencies, giving rise to the formation of dynamic kinks along the vortex. Measurements of $R_i(H)$ caused by sparse vortices trapped perpendicular to the surface can offer opportunities to investigate an extreme nonlinear dynamics of vortices driven by strong current densities up to the depairing limit at low temperatures. The behavior of $R_i(H)$, which can be tuned by varying the rf frequency or concentration of nonmagnetic impurities, is not masked by strong heating effects characteristic of dc or pulse transport measurements.

Recent developments in photoresists for extreme-ultraviolet lithography

Here, this report describes recent developments and current needs in the field of high-resolution photopolymers and photomolecules briefly describing prior generation lithographic patterning materials. It subsequently concentrates on recent advances in both inorganic and polymeric materials for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. It is also part of a series of papers written in celebration of the centenary of the Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). PMSE has long been home to polymer chemists who have made important contributions to advances in semiconductor manufacturing as a result of PMSE's focus on polymer coatings research. While EUV lithography has been an area of research for several decades, only within the last 5 years has the combination of new light sources, EUV optics, tool advances and resist discoveries come together to transition this area from the patterning method of the future to a leading-edge manufacturing technology.

MgB$_{2}$ Coating by HPCVD for 1.3-GHz Superconducting RF Cavities

While MgB 2 possesses promising material parameters for SRF cavities with higher Q, higher gradient, and higher operation temperatures than Nb cavities, such cavity properties have not been demonstrated using MgB 2 . As part of a continuing effort to fabricate MgB 2 -coated SRF cavities by hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD), we present here an HPCVD system design for coating the inside wall of 1.3-GHz copper cavities with MgB 2 . The cavity is heated using a pair of clamshell resistive heaters that directly contact the cavity body. Here, the new heater design is more compact and requires less power to reach the deposition temperature (~500°C for MgB 2 deposition on copper.) Preliminary test of MgB 2 films grown on small copper substrates, mounted at different locations on the cavity, shows T c of 28.4 ~ 34.3 K, measured by AC susceptibility.

Development of a high current density, high temperature superconducting cable for pulsed magnets

Abstract A low AC loss Rare Earth Barium Copper Oxide (REBCO) cable, based on the VIPER cable technology has been developed by Commonwealth Fusion Systems for use in high field, REBCO based tokamaks. The new cable is composed of partitioned and transposed copper ‘petals’ shaped to fit together in a circular pattern with each petal containing a REBCO tape stack and insulated from each other to reduce AC losses. A stainless steel jacket adds mechanical robustness—also serving as a vessel for solder impregnation—while a tube runs through the middle for cooling purposes. Additionally, fiber optic sensors are placed under the tape stacks for quench detection. To qualify this design, a series of experiments were conducted as part of the SPARC tokamak Central Solenoid Model Coil program—to retire the risks associated with full scale, fast ramping, high flux HTS Central Solenoid (CS) and Poloidal Field (PF) coils for tokamak fusion power plants and net energy demonstrators. These risk study and risk reduction experiments include (1) AC loss measurement and model validation in the range of ~5 T/s, (2) an IxB electromagnetic loading of over 850 kN/m at the cable level and up to 300 kN/m at the stack level, (3) a transverse compression resilience of over 350 MPa, (4) manufacturability at tokamak relevant speeds and scales, (5) cable to cable joint performance, (6) fiber optic based quench detection speed, accuracy, and feasibility, and (7) overall winding pack integration and magnet assembly. The result is a cable technology, now referred to as PIT VIPER, with AC losses that measure fifteen times lower (at ~5 T/s) than its predecessor technology; a 2% or lower degradation of critical current (Ic) at high IxB electromagnetic loads; no detectable Ic degradation up to 570 MPa of transverse compression on the cable unit cell; end to end magnet manufacturing, consistently producing Ic values within 7% of the model prediction; cable to cable joint resistances at 20 K on the order of ~15 nΩ; and fast, functional quench detection capabilities that do not involve voltage taps. This cable technology will be tested comprehensively in a Central Solenoid Model Coil to prove its readiness for compact, high field tokamak operation.

NUMERICAL CALCULATION OF LOSSES OF TRAPPED VORTICES UNDER STRONG RF MEISSNER CURRENT AND DC SUPERHEATING FIELD IN TYPE II SUPERCONDUCTORS

Research on the vortex dynamics and enhancing of superheating field in superconductors has attracted much attention in accelerator physics community to develop next-generation high-performance accelerator cavities. However, the extreme dynamics of curvilinear elastic vortices driven by very strong currents close to the depairing limit or superheating field of a superconductor with a nanostructured surface has not been well understood. We calculated the superheating field Hsh and critical momentum kc characterizing the wavelength of the instability ?m of the Meissner state to flux penetration by solving numerically the Ginzburg?Landau equations. A bulk superconductor, superconductor with the inhomogeneous surface disorder (S-S), and multilayered surface (S-I-S) have been thoroughly investigated in this work. Our result showed that S-S and S-I-S structures can enhance the superheating field well above their clean limit. In this work extensive numerical simulation of the power dissipated by an oscillating vortex segment driven by the surface ac Meissner currents was performed. Our simulations take into account the nonlinear vortex line tension, vortex mass, Bardeen?Stephen viscous vortex drag applicable at low fields, and nonlinear Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) viscous drag coefficient ?(v) at high fields and pinning force. We showed that the LO decrease of ?(v) with the vortex velocity v could radically change the field dependence of the surface resistance Ri(H) caused by trapped vortices. At low frequencies Ri(H) exhibits a conventional increase with H. However, as frequency increases, the surface resistance becomes a nonmonotonic function of H which decreases with H at higher fields irrespective of the pinning distribution. Overheating can mask the descending field dependence of Ri(H) as frequency increases. Our numerical simulations also show that the LO effect can cause a vortex bending instability at high field amplitudes and frequencies, giving rise to the formation of dynamic kinks along with the vortex when a vortex is pinned strongly to one end. Nonlinear losses of trapped vortices in thick films under high-amplitude RF fields as functions of frequency, mean free path and pinning characteristics have been calculated.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals

Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of the structural, electrical transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals. Mn and Te K -edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction were measured to provide information on the local atomic environment and the average crystal structure. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-order paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition at T c ~ 74 K, which is further confirmed by the specific heat measurement. Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits semiconducting behavior along with a large negative magnetoresistance of -87% at T c and a relatively high value of thermopower up to ~10 mV/K at 5 K. Besides the rapidly increasing resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) below 20 K, the large discrepancy between the activation energy for resistivity E ρ and thermopower E S above 20 K indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity κ(T) of Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 is notably rather low, comparable to Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 , and is strongly suppressed in the magnetic field across T c , indicating the presence of strong spin-lattice coupling, also similar with Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 .

A High-Frequency Planar Transformer with Medium-Voltage Isolation

This paper presents the design of a low-loss, high-frequency planar transformer having medium-voltage (10’s of kV) isolation capability while transformer primary and secondary windings are interleaved to reduce losses. Medium-voltage isolation between adjacent printed circuit board (PCB) layers is extremely challenging using traditional PCB dielectrics. The isolation requirement is met using PCB with 7 kV/mil polyimide (Panasonic Felios RF775) as the dielectric, and by an appropriate layout of the windings and the inter-winding vias. The transformer is used to implement a dual active bridge (DAB) converter in a stackable dc-ac architecture where the dc port is connected to a photovoltaic (PV) string and ac outputs are connected in series to achieve direct PV string-to-medium voltage conversion without the need for low-voltage collection or a bulky line frequency transformer. Since each DAB transformer processes time-varying power, a design methodology is developed to minimize line-cycle-averaged losses. Experimental results are presented for a 1:1 planar transformer in a 7.5 kW SiC-based dc-to-ac module operating at 200 kHz. Isolation of 26 kV between the primary and secondary layers and between the windings and the core is verified using a hipot tester.
