Enhanced UV–Vis Rejection Ratio in Metal/BaTiO 3 /β–Ga 2 O 3 Solar–Blind Photodetectors

The fabrication and characterization of metal/BaTiO 3 /β-Ga 2 O 3 solar-blind photodetectors are reported. β-Ga 2 O 3 is a promising material for solar-blind photodetectors due to its large bandgap and the availability of low defect-density melt-grown substrates. In this work, structures are introduced that employ high-permittivity dielectric/semiconductor heterojunctions to enhance the performance of a Schottky photodetector. It is shown that integrating the high-k dielectric BaTiO 3 reduces the dark current by ≈10 4 , all but eliminates illumination induced Schottky barrier lowering, and increases the UV–vis rejection ratio by a factor greater than 9 × 10 3 compared to a Schottky photodetector. It is hypothesized that the high permittivity of the dielectric overcomes the influence of self-trapped holes in Ga 2 O 3 to reduce the peak electric field at the dielectric/metal interface, thereby eliminating the effects of Schottky barrier lowering on illuminated β-Ga 2 O 3 photodetectors. Additionally, it is hypothesized that the increase in the UV–vis rejection ratio is caused by the “dead layer” that forms at the BaTiO 3 /Pt interface.

Identification of $^{3}$He–$^{3}$H clusters in the $^{6}$Li+$^{89}$Y experiment using particle-$\gamma$ coincidence measurement

The 6 Li+ 89 Y experiment was performed to explore the reaction mechanism induced by a weakly bound nucleus 6 Li and its cluster configuration. Here, the particle-$\gamma$ coincidence method was used to identify the different reaction channels. The $\gamma$-rays coincident with 3 He/ 3 H indicate that the 3 H/ 3 He stripping reaction plays a significant role in the formation of Zr/Nb isotopes. The obtained results support the existence of a 3 He- 3 H cluster in 6 Li. Direct and sequential transfer reactions are adequately discussed, and the FRESCO code is used to perform precise finite-range cyclic redundancy check calculations. In the microscopic calculation, direct cluster transfer is more predominant than sequential transfer in 3 H transfer. However, the direct cluster transfer is of comparable magnitude to the sequential transfer in the 3 He transfer.

Light-Promoted C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) Reductive Elimination from Dialkyl NiII Complexes

Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling is a powerful strategy to forge C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bonds. Typically, to do so requires overcoming a challenging C–C bond-forming reductive elimination, often enabled by the intermediacy of highly oxidized Ni species or outer-sphere processes. While direct C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) reductive elimination from the Ni II base oxidation state is normally thermally inaccessible, light-activation provides an avenue to affect such transformations. Here, we investigate the mechanism of light-induced C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bond formation from dialkyl bipyridine Ni II complexes through a variety of organometallic, spectroscopic, and computational studies. Wavelength-dependent quantum yields, ligand electronics–reactivity relationships, excited-state lifetimes, computed barriers, and product distributions from crossover studies support a photolysis/radical rebound mechanism. Furthermore, this reactivity paradigm complements existing strategies in the literature to promote reductive elimination from Ni II , such as the use of destabilizing, sterically hindered ligands and reduction of electron density at Ni through the binding of electron-deficient olefins. Hence, we envision that light-induced reductive elimination may enable the development of challenging C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) couplings.

Interfacial charge transfer and its impact on transport properties of LaNiO 3 /LaFeO 3 superlattices

Charge transfer or redistribution at oxide heterointerfaces is a critical phenomenon, often leading to remarkable properties such as two-dimensional electron gas and interfacial ferromagnetism. Despite studies on LaNiO 3 /LaFeO 3 superlattices and heterostructures, the direction and magnitude of the charge transfer remain debated, with some suggesting no charge transfer due to the high stability of Fe 3+ (3d 5 ). Here, we synthesized a series of epitaxial LaNiO 3 /LaFeO 3 superlattices and demonstrated partial (up to ~0.5 e - /interface unit cell) charge transfer from Fe to Ni near the interface, supported by density functional theory simulations and spectroscopic evidence of changes in Ni and Fe oxidation states. The electron transfer from LaFeO 3 to LaNiO 3 and the subsequent rearrangement of the Fe 3d band create an unexpected metallic ground state within the LaFeO 3 layer, strongly influencing the in-plane transport properties across the superlattice. Moreover, we establish a direct correlation between interfacial charge transfer and in-plane electrical transport properties, providing insights for designing functional oxide heterostructures with emerging properties.

Correction, improvement and model verification of CARE 3, version 3

An independent verification of the CARE 3 mathematical model and computer code was conducted and reported in NASA Contractor Report 166096, Review and Verification of CARE 3 Mathematical Model and Code: Interim Report. The study uncovered some implementation errors that were corrected and are reported in this document. The corrected CARE 3 program is called version 4. Thus the document, correction. improvement, and model verification of CARE 3, version 3 was written in April 1984. It is being published now as it has been determined to contain a more accurate representation of CARE 3 than the preceding document of April 1983. This edition supercedes NASA-CR-166122 entitled, 'Correction and Improvement of CARE 3,' version 3, April 1983.

FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.

Ultra-stable and poison tolerant oxygen evolution activity enabled by surface In 2 O 3- x (OH) y of Co 3 In 2 S 2 large single crystals

Water is an earth-abundant source for clean hydrogen production via electrochemical water electrolysis (WE). However, the surface poisoning that occurs in aqueous electrolytes drastically deactivates the electrocatalytic performance of electrodes. Here, in this study, we report electrochemically formed In 2 O 3-x (OH) y on the surface of a large (1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide and 0.3–0.5 mm thick) single crystal of Weyl semimetal Co 3 In 2 S 2 (Co 3 In 2 S 2 /In 2 O 3-x (OH) y ) as an ultra-stable and poison tolerant electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH, addressing a bottleneck in WE. The OER activity of the powder form of Co 3 In 2 S 2 is limited by its aerophilic nature. Remarkably, the single-crystal electrodes maintained their high activity for a continuous operational period of 5 h in 1 M KOH electrolyte with/without 10 mM strong surface-poisoning ligands i.e., potassium cyanide, bipyridine, and ethylenediaminetetraacetate disodium salt. The electrodes exhibited stable OER activity for 1000 h at 100 mA cm -2 (1.73 V vs. RHE). The temperature-dependent OER polarization curves (10–70 °C) unambiguously revealed surface poisoning through the suppression of precatalytic Co-redox peaks on the bipyridine poisoned electrode, which led to the stabilization of surface Co-sites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of pristine, poisoned and post-electrocatalytic single-crystal Co 3 In 2 S 2 electrodes revealed the existence of an In 2 O 3-x (OH) y surface phase, which could be the potential heterostructure for the origin of ultra-stable and poison tolerant OER activity.

Anisotropic magnetic behavior of Nd 3 ⁢ScBi 5 and Pr 3 ⁡ScBi 5 single crystals

Here, we report an investigation of the magnetic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of single-crystalline Nd 3 ⁢ScBi 5 and Pr 3 ⁡ScBi 5 . Both compounds crystallize in the hexagonal 𝑃⁢6 3 /𝑚⁢𝑐⁢𝑚 space group that is common to related materials with rare-earth atoms that form twisted kagome nets. Nd 3 ⁢ScBi 5 undergoes two successive antiferromagnetic transitions, at 𝑇 𝑁 =5.6K and 𝑇 2 =4.7K. When a magnetic field is applied along [100], both 𝑇 𝑁 and 𝑇 2 are suppressed with increasing field, and multiple metamagnetic transitions are observed; in-plane anisotropy is demonstrated by a slight broadening and movement of the metamagnetic transitions when the field is applied along [110]. For H ∥ [001], 𝑇 𝑁 and 𝑇 2 exhibit only a weak field dependence and metamagnetic transitions are not observed. The magnetoresistance and Hall effect respond strongly to the metamagnetic transitions and further motivate a detailed characterization of the magnetic structures under applied fields. Pr 3 ⁡ScBi 5 , in contrast, undergoes a single antiferromagnetic transition at 𝑇 𝑁 =5.3K and a single metamagnetic transition at higher fields. These findings place Nd 3 ⁢ScBi 5 and Pr 3 ⁡ScBi 5 as promising systems for exploring anisotropic magnetism and field-driven magnetic phase transitions in intermetallic compounds.

Polarized Radiative Transfer of a Cirrus Cloud Consisting of Randomly Oriented Hexagonal Ice Crystals: The 3 x 3 Approximation for Non-Spherical Particles

The reflection and transmission of polarized light for a cirrus cloud consisting of randomly oriented hexagonal columns were calculated by two very different vector radiative transfer models. The forward peak of the phase function for the ensemble-averaged ice crystals has a value of order 6 x 10(exp 3) so a truncation procedure was used to help produce numerically efficient yet accurate results. One of these models, the Vectorized Line-by-Line Equivalent model (VLBLE), is based on the doubling- adding principle, while the other is based on a vector discrete ordinates method (VDISORT). A comparison shows that the two models provide very close although not entirely identical results, which can be explained by differences in treatment of single scattering and the representation of the scattering phase matrix. The relative differences in the reflected I and Q Stokes parameters are within 0.5 for I and within 1.5 for Q for all viewing angles. In 1971 Hansen showed that for scattering by spherical particles the 3 x 3 approximation is sufficient to produce accurate results for the reflected radiance I and the degree of polarization (DOP), and he conjectured that these results would hold also for non-spherical particles. Simulations were conducted to test Hansen's conjecture for the cirrus cloud particles considered in this study. It was found that the 3 x 3 approximation also gives accurate results for the transmitted light, and for Q and U in addition to I and DOP. For these non-spherical ice particles the 3 x 3 approximation leads to an absolute error 2 x 10(exp -6) for the reflected and transmitted I, Q and U Stokes parameters. Hence, it appears to be an excellent approximation, which significantly reduces the computational complexity and burden required for multiple scattering calculations.

Magnetic La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Membranes Synthesized by Etching a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 Sacrificial Layer Using an Intermediary Manganite Protection Layer

The integration of perovskite oxides onto flexible substrates has witnessed significant advancements owing to the development of an epitaxial lift-off technique utilizing a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 sacrificial layer. However, Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 is susceptible to instability in both air and high-temperature oxygen atmospheres, potentially leading to degradation during the growth of the functional oxide layer. In this study, we investigate the use of an oxygen-deficient La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 as capping layer, and demonstrate its ability to stabilize Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 films in ambient air. We successfully synthesized freestanding La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 membranes by etching this sacrificial layer and transferring them onto flexible polymer substrates. Importantly, the magnetic properties of the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 films are preserved in these membranes. Furthermore, our results underline that employing a thin manganite capping layer ensures both high structural quality and the preservation of functional properties in the resulting membranes.
