Influence of free-stream disturbances on boundary-layer transition

Considerable experimental evidence exists which shows that free stream disturbances (the ratio of root-mean-square pressure fluctuations to mean values) in conventional wind tunnels increase with increasing Mach number at low supersonic to moderate hypersonic speeds. In addition to local conditions, the free stream disturbance level influences transition behavior on simple test models. Based on this observation, existing noise transition data obtained in the same test facility were correlated for a large number of reference sharp cones and flat plates and are shown to collapse along a single curve. This result is a significant improvement over previous attempts to correlate noise transition data.

Vibrational and rotational transitions in low-energy electron-diatomic-molecule collisions. I - Close-coupling theory in the moving body-fixed frame. II - Hybrid theory and close-coupling theory: An /l subscript z-prime/-conserving close-coupling approximation

A detailed vibrational-rotational (V-R) close-coupling formulation of electron-diatomic-molecule scattering is developed in which the target molecular axis is chosen to be the z-axis and the resulting coupled differential equation is solved in the moving body-fixed frame throughout the entire interaction region. The coupled differential equation and asymptotic boundary conditions in the body-fixed frame are given for each parity, and procedures are outlined for evaluating V-R transition cross sections on the basis of the body-fixed transition and reactance matrix elements. Conditions are discussed for obtaining identical results from the space-fixed and body-fixed formulations in the case where a finite truncated basis set is used. The hybrid theory of Chandra and Temkin (1976) is then reformulated, relevant expressions and formulas for the simultaneous V-R transitions of the hybrid theory are obtained in the same forms as those of the V-R close-coupling theory, and distorted-wave Born-approximation expressions for the cross sections of the hybrid theory are presented. A close-coupling approximation that conserves the internuclear axis component of the incident electronic angular momentum (l subscript z-prime) is derived from the V-R close-coupling formulation in the moving body-fixed frame.

Airborne navigation system performance during RNAV/MLS transition

Aircraft position error sensitivity to sensor errors and flight path geometry is analyzed during RNAV/MLS transition using a digital computer simulation. The avionics sensitivity data provides information necessary to establish requirements for additional guidance law design and to establish airspace requirements for maneuvering to null out any residual RNAV errors upon MLS transition. The data base is also beneficial as planning information for subsequent flight testing. The parameters varied during the generation of the data base include flight profile, error source content and magnitude, ground facility location, runway/flight path orientation and navigation mode. The avionics, autopilots and aircraft dynamics correspond to the existing NASA Terminal Configured Vehicle. Significant transients were observed during MLS transition, primarily in the vertical channel. These transients have a significant impact on airspace requirements and operational procedures in the RNAV/MLS environment.

Discontinuous transitions in a current-carrying plasma

The properties of 'discontinuous' transitions in a current-carrying plasma are investigated by adopting an approach based on the two-fluid equations for a plasma. Braginskii's (1965) transport equations for a two-fluid plasma carrying a current are presented, and allowance is made for collisions with a background neutral gas as well as for effects of reflected particles. The speed of sound in a current-carrying plasma is derived so that the Mach number can be defined correctly as the ratio of the flow speed to the wave phase velocity in such a plasma. The various types of discontinuities permitted by the relevant jump relations in the absence of reflected particles are classified, the effect of reflected particles on such discontinuities is examined, and it is shown that the degree of indeterminacy of a discontinuity can be changed by the presence of reflected particles. Consideration of shocks containing a population of reflected particles and adiabatic transitions indicates that the pressure of reflected particles alone can give rise to both weak and strong transitions. The construction of discontinuous periodic flow solutions is also discussed.

Light-scattering study of the glass transition in lubricants

The sound velocity of four lubricants has been measured as a function of temperature and pressure using Brillouin scattering. A change in slope of the velocity as a function of temperature or pressure allowed the determination of the glass transition temperature and pressure. The glass transition data were used to construct a phase diagram for each lubricant. The data indicate that the glass transition temperature increased with pressure at a rate which ranged from 120 to 200 C/GPa. The maximum pressure attained was 0.69 GPa and the temperature range was from 25 to 100 C.

Semirigorous bounds for the dipole moments and transition moments of the LiH molecule

Semirigorous error limits for the dipole moments and transition moments of LiH at R = 3.015 bohr are reported. Weinhold's formula for the upper and lower bounds to transition moments is extended to include transitions between states of the same symmetry, and Chong's (1976) semirigorous expression for the lower bound to the overlap between the approximate and the true wavefunctions is applied to the calculation. The semirigorous theory of Chong was also generalized in the sense that the zeroth-order wavefunction was allowed to contain many configuration state functions instead of just the Hartree-Fock or first natural configuration state function.

EUV spectra from Skylab /1175-1940 A/ - Mass motions in the transition zone in regions of solar activity

The profiles of spectral lines in the 1100-2000-A range emitted by transition-zone ions in regions of solar activity are discussed. The data were recorded by the NRL spectrograph on Skylab. At the spatial resolution of the Skylab spectrograph (2 x 60 arcsec), it is shown that the line profiles result from the superposed emission of a number of physically distinct regions at different electron densities and with different mass motions. Although high densities are found for some surgelike phenomena at transition-zone temperatures, the densities can also be comparable to normal active-region densities. Line profiles, as well as spectral line intensities, must be considered if meaningful theoretical models of dynamic activity in the transition zone are to be constructed.

Feasibility study of transit photon correlation anemometer for Ames Research Center unitary wind tunnel plan

A laser transit anemometer measured a two-dimensional vector velocity, using the transit time of scattering particles between two focused and parallel laser beams. The objectives were: (1) the determination of the concentration levels and light scattering efficiencies of naturally occurring, submicron particles in the NASA/Ames unitary wind tunnel and (2) the evaluation based on these measured data of a laser transit anemometer with digital correlation processing for nonintrusive velocity measurement in this facility. The evaluation criteria were the speeds at which point velocity measurements could be realized with this technique (as determined from computer simulations) for given accuracy requirements.

Prebiotic coordination chemistry: The potential role of transition-metal complexes in the chemical evolution

In approaching the extremely involved and complex problem of the origin of life, consideration of the coordination chemistry appeared not only as a possibility but as a necessity. The first model experiments appear to be promising because of prebiotic-type synthesis by means of transition-metal complexes. It is especially significant that in some instances various types of vitally important substances (nucleic bases, amino acids) are formed simultaneously. There is ground to hope that systematic studies in this field will clarify the role of transition-metal complexes in the organizatorial phase of chemical evolution. It is obvious that researchers working in the fields of the chemistry of cyano and carbonyl complexes, and of the catalytic effect of transition-metal complexes are best suited to study these aspects of the attractive and interesting problem of the origin of life.

Mechanics of Boundary Layer Transition. Part 5: Boundary Layer Stability theory in incompressible and compressible flow

The fundamentals of stability theory, its chief results, and the physical mechanisms at work are presented. The stability theory of the laminar boundary determines whether a small disturbance introduced into the boundary layer will amplify or damp. If the disturbance damps, the boundary layer remains laminar. If the disturbance amplifies, and by a sufficient amount, then transition to turbulence eventually takes place. The stability theory establishes those states of the boundary layer which are most likely to lead to transition, identifys those frequencies which are the most dangerous, and indicates how the external parameters can best be changed to avoid transition.

Studies of the high pressure transition in sulfur

High-pressure transition in crystalline orthorhombic sulfur has been investigated, using a diamond indentor pressed against a diamond flat to produce pressures up to 300 kbar and an opposed-anvil apparatus to obtain lower pressures. The first indication of sulfur transition using the indentor technique was seen when resistance measured 3 times 10 to the 12th ohm. Transition was found to be sluggish and highly time-dependent.

Phase transitions in Group III-V and II-VI semiconductors at high pressure

The structures and transition pressures of Group III-V and II-VI semiconductors and of a pseudobinary system (Ga/x/In/1-x/Sb) have been investigated. Results indicate that GaP, InSb, GaSb, GaAs and possible AlP assume Metallic structures at high pressures; a tetragonal, beta-Sn-like structure is adopted by only InSb and GaSb. The rocksalt phase is preferred in InP, InAs, AlSb, ZnO and ZnS. The model of Van Vechten (1973) gives transition pressures which are in good agreement with measured values, but must be refined to account for the occurrence of the ionic rocksalt structure in some compounds. In addition, discrepancies between the theoretical scaling values for volume changes at the semiconductor-to-metal transitions are observed.

Flight evaluation of configuration management system concepts during transition to the landing approach for a powered-lift STOL aircraft

Flight experiments were conducted to evaluate two control concepts for configuration management during the transition to landing approach for a powered-lift STOL aircraft. NASA Ames' augmentor wing research aircraft was used in the program. Transitions from nominal level-flight configurations at terminal area pattern speeds were conducted along straight and curved descending flightpaths. Stabilization and command augmentation for attitude and airspeed control were used in conjunction with a three-cue flight director that presented commands for pitch, roll, and throttle controls. A prototype microwave system provided landing guidance. Results of these flight experiments indicate that these configuration management concepts permit the successful performance of transitions and approaches along curved paths by powered-lift STOL aircraft. Flight director guidance was essential to accomplish the task.

Tables of stark level transition probabilities and branching ratios in hydrogen-like atoms

The transition probabilities which are given in terms of n prime k prime and n k are tabulated. No additional summing or averaging is necessary. The electric quantum number k plays the role of the angular momentum quantum number l in the presence of an electric field. The branching ratios between stark levels are also tabulated. Necessary formulas for the transition probabilities and branching ratios are given. Symmetries are discussed and selection rules are given. Some disagreements for some branching ratios are found between the present calculation and the measurement of Mark and Wierl. The transition probability multiplied by the statistical weight of the initial state is called the static intensity J sub S, while the branching ratios are called the dynamic intensity J sub D.

Boundary-layer transition on a 10-deg cone - Wind tunnel/flight correlation

Boundary-layer transition location measurements were made on a 10-deg sharp cone in 23 wind tunnels of the US and Europe and in flight. The data were acquired at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic Mach numbers over a range of unit Reynolds numbers to obtain an improved understanding of wind tunnel flow quality influence. Cone surface microphone measurements showed Tollmien-Schlichting waves present. Transition location defined by pitot probe measurements showed transition Reynolds number to be correlatable to cone surface disturbance amplitude within + or - 20 percent for the majority of tunnel and flight data.

A universal reduced glass transition temperature for liquids

Data on the dependence of the glass transition temperature on the molecular structure for low-molecular-weight liquids are analyzed in order to determine whether Boyer's reduced glass transition temperature (1952) is a universal constant as proposed. It is shown that the Boyer ratio varies widely depending on the chemical nature of the molecule. It is pointed out that a characteristic temperature ratio, defined by the ratio of the sum of the melting temperature and the boiling temperature to the sum of the glass transition temperature and the boiling temperature, is a universal constant independent of the molecular structure of the liquid. The average value of the ratio obtained from data for 65 liquids is 1.15.

The behavior of the O/+/-H/+/ transition level at solar maximum

An examination of the transition level at which the ionospheric ions O(+) and H(+) are equal in concentration has been carried out by using the retarding potential analyzer data from the OGO 6 satellite. Between dip latitudes of 0 and 50 deg the transition level shows a much more pronounced latitude dependence during solar maximum than during solar minimum. The longitude dependence of the transition level features indicates the roles that zonal and meridional F region winds might play in the distribution of O(+) and H(+) in the low- and mid-latitude ionosphere.

The energy balance of the solar transition region

It is shown how the observed distribution of the emission measure with temperature can be used to limit the range of energy deposition functions suitable for heating the solar transition region and inner corona. The minimum energy loss solution is considered in view of the work by Hearn (1975) in order to establish further scaling laws between the transition region pressure, the maximum coronal temperature and the parameter giving the absolute value of the emission measure. Also discussed is the absence of a static energy balance at the base of the transition region in terms of measurable atmospheric parameters, and the condition for a static energy balance is given. In addition, the possible role of the emission from He II in stabilizing the atmosphere by providing enhanced radiation loss is considered.
