Method of transient control for robust enrichment operation in low temperature combustion engine

A method of transient control for enrichment operation in a low-temperature combustion engine. The method includes determining if a current mode of the low-temperature combustion (LTC) engine is a positive valve overlap (PVO) mode. Determining if a previous mode of the LTC engine was also the PVO mode when the current mode is the PVO mode, wherein the previous mode is immediately prior to the current mode. Determining if the previous mode of the LTC engine was a negative valve overlap (NVO) mode when the previous mode was not the PVO mode. Initiating a predetermined enrichment PVO mode for the LTC engine based on the previous mode of the LTC engine. The predetermined enrichment PVO mode includes initiating a deep enrichment PVO mode, when the previous mode of the LTC engine was the NVO mode, and initiating a shallow enrichment PVO mode, when the previous mode of the LTC engine was not the NVO mode.

A High-Fidelity Electromagnetic Transient Model of Inverter-based Resources Integrated to an IEEE-9 Bus System for Benchmarking Studies

An inverter-based resource (IBR) is a source of electricity that is asynchronously connected to the electrical grid via an electronic power converter. These power sources lack the intrinsic behaviors of the standard power plants, presenting specific challenges to system stability. These power sources lack the intrinsic behaviors of the standards power plants and their features are almost entirely defined by the control strategy used on them, presenting specific challenges to system stability as their penetration increases into the already fragile Bulk Power System (BPS). Utilizing renewable energy has a great upside but the electrical industry needs to understand the requirements like performing electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation studies in planning and/or in interconnection studies. This paper presents the development of a high-fidelity EMT model based on commercial equipment and field parameters, which at the same time aims to study the increasing penetration of IBRs and their impact on the actual BPS. The open-source EMT model developed will be a benchmarking example that can be used to evaluate algorithms in the power grid (including evaluating grid-forming controls, power system monitoring and operation, etc.).

Transient Stability Enhancement via a Scalable RL Method with VSG Parameter Tuning

This paper presents a reinforcement learning (RL)-driven strategy to improve the transient stability of power systems via tuning parameters of multiple virtual synchronous generators (VSGs). We proposed a scalable method to support RL training convergence probability and speed, even when a large number of contingencies are considered. The proposed scalable RL framework first decomposes the large number of contingencies into multiple groups and then conducts parallel training for each group, decreasing the state space and complexity of each training. Additionally, we propose a contingency grouping algorithm to streamline the RL action space and facilitate the training. The proposed method is validated across various standard test systems.

Modelling Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Reactor Expander Cycle Startup Transients

As the interest in nuclear thermal propulsion grows, the need for high fidelity and comprehensive models of the system increases. An expander cycle model was developed using RELAP-7 for the thermal-hydraulic performance and Griffin to provide the power level using a point kinetics approximation, for a reference NTP system. The tank and pump are approximated using boundary conditions. Flow is split between the moderator cooling channels flow path and the regenerative cooling/reflector cooling channels flow path. The flow recombines before entering the turbine and the fuel cooling channels. The turbine pressure ratio is maintained at 1.44 using a PID controller. A startup transient was simulated and shows the capability of the model to run from low temperature and pressures to nominal conditions.

Improved Transient Stability Analysis of Multi-loop Droop-Controlled Grid Forming Inverters with Current Reference Limiter

Grid-forming control is regarded as a promising technology for achieving high levels of renewable energy integration in future power grids. To fulfill this role, grid-forming devices is expected to possess fault ride through capability. This paper focuses on the transient stability of a droop control-based grid-forming inverter that utilizes current reference saturation as a current limiting strategy. The objective of this work is to investigate the fault recovery process of the grid-forming inverter and analyze the criterion for transitioning the inverter out of the current limiting mode. The theoretical analysis in this study is validated through time-domain simulations, which compare the results obtained using the circuit current limiting method and the d-axis priority-based current limiting method. Various operational conditions are considered to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the grid-forming inverter during a three-phase short circuit scenario. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical approach.

Fault-tolerant grid frequency measurement algorithm during transients

A system determines the frequency of grid signals corresponding to an electrical grid in real time. The system includes a transient detector that monitors a grid signal from a voltage meter or a current meter connected to the electrical grid. The system produces, in real time and at a sampling rate, a deviation signal indicative of a periodicity of the monitored grid signal. The system determines, over one or more cycles of the monitored grid signal, a measurement signal corresponding to the deviation signal. The system determines a frequency signal that corresponds a frequency estimation of the monitored signal by applying a frequency estimation when values of the measurement signal are less than a deviation threshold and maintaining the frequency signal at a constant value when values of the measured signal equal or exceeds the deviation threshold.

Radiation-induced transients on solid and molten Li and K iodides

The study, quantification, and monitoring of iodine in nuclear power generation systems have been paramount due to its environmental and health implications. Thorough speciation and transport studies strengthened the development and deployment of water reactors, which are now required for the new generation of Molten Salt Reactors (MSR), where the fuel and coolant are a complex liquid system of suitable halides. The speciation, radiation-induced chemistry, and transport of iodine (I-127, I-129 and I-131) under extreme conditions of temperature and ionizing radiation are among the challenges for the future implementation of MSR’s. In aqueous systems, the triiodide-iodine-iodide (I3--I2-I-) equilibrium is strongly dependent on the conditions of the medium. In molten iodides and chlorides, the triiodide detection (and its disproportionation) poses challenges due to the extreme conditions of temperature and radiation, but studies have shown a dependence on temperature, absorbed dose and salt composition. Through absorption spectroscopy techniques (diffuse reflectance and high-temperature UV-Vis), as well as resonance (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) it is possible to identify primary transients induced by ionizing radiation trapped in the solid phase (Solid-state radiolysis), and steady-state main absorption components with a fast-acquisition real-time spectroscopy. The presence of heterogeneous phase (colloids), viscosity changes, and gas evolution are among the observed processes. A specific case of study is speciation in the presence of Ni. A corrosion product with magnetic properties due to unpaired electrons in its electronic structure. Ferromagnetic materials are monitored in solidified salts to identify aggregation and phase separation. Comparative studies of eutectic mixtures of LiI-KI and LiCl-KCl with known addition of dopants will be presented, with a perspective of radiation chemistry and its possible implications in complex systems.

A Fluorescence‐Based Transient Expression Assay for the Analysis of Upstream Open Reading Frames in Plants

Upstream open reading frames (uORFs) are regulatory elements present in the 5′ leaders of mRNA that can significantly impact downstream gene expression in eukaryotes. In crop engineering, editing of uORFs can provide an avenue to upregulate expression of native genes without the need to add persistent transgenic copies. Even with genome-wide methods to identify translated uORFs such as ribosome profiling, their functional characterization depends on validation through reporter gene assays and mutagenesis studies. Current screening methods for plants use luciferases or protoplasts to measure differential gene expression between wild-type and mutated transcript leaders, which requires tissue processing and/or substrate addition. Here, we present a time- and cost-efficient alternative to investigate transcript leaders by co-expression of two fluorescent proteins in Nicotiana benthamiana leaf tissue and test our assay on genes involved in photoprotection, editing of which could provide a pathway to increase CO 2 assimilation during sun–shade transitions.

Exploring the Photogenerated Charge Transfer Mechanism in Cu 2 O@MoS 2 Heterojunction Photocatalyst Using Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Both heterojunction and core–shell photocatalysts have demonstrated promising performance in photocatalytic CO 2 conversions to fuels. However, fundamental knowledge of heterojunctions in core–shell structures is highly desired to facilitate the design of future photocatalysts. By combining advanced experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the role of the Cu 2 O@MoS 2 heterojunction in photocatalytic CO 2 conversions to fuels was investigated. We discovered that the charge dynamics and electron transfer properties of Cu2O@MoS 2 photocatalysts are altered by the heterojunction and Cu 2 O underlayer due to the electron transfer from Cu 2 O to MoS 2 and the change in CO 2 adsorption strength on the hybrid catalyst surface. Consequently, more electrons can travel to the surrounding liquid environment to be consumed by CO 2 reduction. This study provides experimental and theoretical investigations of the fundamental mechanisms of heterojunction core–shell photocatalysts.

Surface smoothing for laser powder-bed Ti-6Al-4V by a transient liquid phase

Surface roughness is the primary driver of fatigue for additively manufactured metals. To address surface roughness, this work introduces a new method to smooth features beyond line-of-sight without material removal. The method applies a coating that triggers local surface remelting by activating a eutectic reaction during heat treatment. The associated liquid phase then wets and isothermally solidifies into a smoother surface. For Ti-6Al-4V fabricated with laser powder bed fusion, samples with and without TLP smoothing (using a Cu coating) were characterized with a suite of techniques, including mechanical testing, electron backscatter diffraction, synchrotron X-ray tomography, and fractography. TLP smoothing reduced surface roughness by 80% and amplified compressive residual stress at the surface by about 50%. With statistically equivalent virtual microstructures, crystal plasticity scrutinized the roles of phases, porosity, and surface roughness. Although the tensile strain-to-failure was reduced to 1% strain, the TLP smoothing process increased high-cycle fatigue strength by about 20% compared to control samples, pointing to future opportunities to optimize the new process through various coating compositions and heat treatment schedules. Overall, this work establishes a new paradigm for treating surfaces of materials for smoothness and compressive residual stress.

Anisotropic Transient Disordering of Colloidal, Two-Dimensional CdSe Nanoplatelets upon Optical Excitation

Nanoplatelets (NPLs)-colloidally synthesized, spatially anisotropic, two-dimensional semiconductor quantum wells-are of intense interest owing to exceptionally narrow transition line widths, coupled with solution processability and bandgap tunability. However, given large surface areas and undercoordinated bonding at facet corners and edges, excitation under sufficient intensities may induce anisotropic structural instabilities that impact desired properties. We employ time-resolved X-ray diffraction to study the crystal structure of CdSe NPLs in response to optical excitation. Photoexcitation induces greater out-of-plane than in-plane disordering in 4 and 5 monolayer (ML) NPLs, while 3 ML NPLs display the opposite behavior. Recovery dynamics suggest that out-of-plane cooling slightly outpaces in-plane cooling in 5 ML NPLs with recrystallization occurring on indistinguishable time scales. In comparison, for zero-dimensional CdSe nanocrystals, disordering is isotropic and recovery is faster. These results favor the use of NPLs in optoelectronic applications, where they are likely to exhibit superior performance over traditional, zero-dimensional nanocrystals.
