Switch concept provides simple means of achieving electromechanical time delay function. Unit consists of reed-type circuit breaker enclosed by copper tubing with electromagnetic coil wound around tubing and entire assembly mounted on insulating platform. Characteristics are affected only by geometry of system so device is expected to be very stable.
Radio frequency switching technique for single receiver and data processing channel to be used for phase movement measurement is discussed. Components of interferometer radio frequency unit, X-band receiver, and interferometer data processing unit are illustrated. Elimination of major measurement error source is described.
Device for detecting excessive operation of electric motors used to drive waveguide switches is described. Purpose of device is to prevent burnout of electric motor in event of waveguide stoppage at some point other than extreme limits of travel. Operation of equipment, components used to sense motor performance, and schematic diagram are included.
The design optimization and simulation effort of the voter-comparator switch (VCS) element are described. The VCS is an adaptive voter element that performs failure detection and reconfiguration function in a computer system designed to tolerate any three single failures in a fail operational fail operational fail safe manner. Detailed logic equations were developed and the design was evaluated and refined using a logic level fault simulator.
Flight characteristics and wing deployment transients for a variable geometry logistics spacecraft concept having a hypersonic lift-drag ratio near 2.0, and employing switch-blade wings for deployment at high subsonic speeds have been determined. These characteristics are based on detailed static wind tunnel results and estimated weight and inertial characteristics of a 9-man logistics lifting entry vehicle. In all instances, unpowered flight is assumed. The present volume is the second of a four volume series encompassing hypersonic lift-drag ratio vehicles from 1 to 3, and including several forms of deployable lifting surfaces. For Volumes 1 and 3, see N70-25699 and N72-15779 respectively.
The innovations in this updated series of compilations dealing with electronic technology represents a carefully selected collection of items on electronic switches and control circuits. Most of the items are based on well-known circuit design concepts that have been simplified or refined to meet NASA's demanding requirement for reliability, simplicity, fail-safe characteristics, and the capability of withstanding environmental extremes.
