Structural modeling and dynamic analysis of condensate storage tanks in nuclear power plants

Condensate storage tanks (CSTs) in nuclear power plants (NPPs) are classified as critical equipment capable of surviving strong shaking in a design basis earthquake to assure the ability to subsequently provide cooling water. Structural modeling and dynamic analysis of CSTs are complicated due to fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and coupling issues, which could have significant effects on seismic response. The capability of a number of approximate models to capture seismic response is investigated using dynamic analysis results from detailed finite element models. Modal analyses and time history analyses are carried out using both 2D and 3D models to predict the dynamic behavior of CSTs as a function of ground motion intensity. Although 2D simplified models can be used to quickly evaluate the dynamic response of CSTs when there is substantial margin to failure, a detailed 3D model is required when it is necessary to examine a limit state associated with the failure mode of the tank. The findings show good agreement between the natural frequencies of convective modes determined from the 2D and 3D CST models. The difference between the frequencies of impulsive modes were found to be equal to or less than 25%.

Multiple Degradation Mechanisms in Reinforced Concrete Structures, Modeling and Risk Analysis

The overarching goal of this project is to complement ongoing Department of Energy (DOE) Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS)-funded Grizzly concrete modeling development efforts by providing improved multi-physics models for incorporation into the Grizzly and BlackBear codes. Objectives of this work identified at the outset of this project include: 1. Coupling between mechanical damage and transport processes. The mechanical damage will be characterized by nonlinear mechanical constitutive models appropriate for concrete used in nuclear power plants (NPPs). 2. Improved representation of the coupling among the transport process, building on the current moisture and thermal transport models in Grizzly. The parameters for coupling among heat and mass transport in the multi-physics model will be experimentally determined. 3. Coupling among different scale levels of concrete constituents, fine and coarse aggregates, cement paste, hydration products, and pore structure. 4. Probabilistic analysis of the random nature of the heterogeneous concrete structure and the environmental factors (ambient temperature and humidity) and their multiple effects on concrete deterioration. 5. Benchmark verification, validation and uncertainty quantification of the thermo-hygro- chemo-mechanical (THCM) concrete formulation. The end goal of this work was to provide a comprehensive and robust simulation capability that can be applied at the engineering scale for analysis of realistic deterioration scenarios in NPP concrete structures.

STRUCTURAL MODELING TO SUPPORT POST-YIELD ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL CLADDING

Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is evaluated for structural failure during storage and transportation scenarios. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology (SFWST) program has sponsored significant research in quantifying mechanical loads on SNF during storage and transportation scenarios using experimental and modeling methods. The SFWST program has also performed significant research on measuring the mechanical behavior of irradiated SNF as defueled cladding segments and cladding with fuel pellets to measure composite behavior. This paper considers some of the key material data from the Sibling Pin testing and uses structural modeling and analysis methods that have been informed by testing to consider post-yield acceptance criteria for SNF cladding structural analysis. Test data published by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are the foundation for informing the material behavior of the models developed in this study. In particular, four-point bend (4PB) tests of fueled and defueled cladding segments provide significant information about the bending failure mode of SNF. ORNL’s 4PB test data is on fueled cladding segments, so the composite behavior of SNF is demonstrated. This paper describes PNNL’s coincident beam model that was developed to approximate the composite behavior of SNF. This paper also presents PNNL’s structural dynamic finite element models of a cask tip-over scenario, which is predicted to cause the strongest mechanical loads on SNF of all postulated storage and transportation scenarios. SNF bending loads predicted in the cask tip-over scenario and cladding acceptance criteria beyond yield are considered, with justification based on the Sibling Pin test data. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code stress intensity limits are also considered. The ultimate goal of this work is to aid in the justification of structural acceptance criteria for SNF cladding beyond the cladding’s irradiated yield strength for use in structural analysis of all storage and transportation scenarios.

The Crucial Role of Sb 2 F 10 in the Chemical Synthesis of F 2

The purely chemical synthesis of fluorine is a spectacular reaction which for more than a century had been believed to be impossible. In 1986, it was finally experimentally achieved, but since then this important reaction has not been further studied and its detailed mechanism had been a mystery. The known thermal stability of MnF 4 casts serious doubts on the originally proposed hypothesis that MnF 4 is thermodynamically unstable and decomposes spontaneously to a lower manganese fluoride and F 2 . This apparent discrepancy has now been resolved experimentally and by electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the reductive elimination of F 2 requires a large excess of SbF 5 and occurs in the last reaction step when in the intermediate [SbF 6 ][MnF 2 ][Sb 2 F 11 ] the addition of one more SbF 5 molecule to the [SbF 6 ] - anion generates a second tridentate [Sb 2 F 11 ] - anion. The two tridentate [Sb 2 F 11 ] - anions then provide six fluorine bridges to the Mn atom thereby facilitating the reductive elimination of the two fluorine ligands as F 2 .

Modal dynamics of wind turbine wake meandering from lidar observations

Horizontal scans from nacelle-mounted lidars provide time series measurements of wind turbine wakes across diverse atmospheric conditions, enabling analysis of coherent turbulent structures that influence wake meandering through proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). While low-order modes capture the most energetic turbulent structures, our analysis reveals that they do not necessarily dominate wake meandering dynamics. We evaluate more than 16,000 combinatorial reconstructions of the flow field for each inflow case, demonstrating that mode relevance depends on mode symmetry, turbulent kinetic energy content, and inflow characteristics. Cases with low turbulence intensity and large integral timescales show stronger correlations between POD modes and wake meandering, whereas higher turbulence conditions (turbulence intensity > 7%) are less effectively described by reduced-order models. However, the qualitative similarity of POD modes across varied atmospheric conditions suggests the potential existence of a semi-universal basis for representing wind turbine wakes, with implications for improving engineering wake models.

Non-averaged single-molecule tertiary structures reveal RNA self-folding through individual-particle cryo-electron tomography

Large-scale and continuous conformational changes in the RNA self-folding process present significant challenges for structural studies, often requiring trade-offs between resolution and observational scope. Here, we utilize individual-particle cryo-electron tomography (IPET) to examine the post-transcriptional self-folding process of designed RNA origami 6-helix bundle with a clasp helix (6HBC). By avoiding selection, classification, averaging, or chemical fixation and optimizing cryo-ET data acquisition parameters, we reconstruct 120 three-dimensional (3D) density maps from 120 individual particles at an electron dose of no more than 168 e - Å -2 , achieving averaged resolutions ranging from 23 to 35 Å, as estimated by Fourier shell correlation (FSC) at 0.5. Each map allows us to identify distinct RNA helices and determine a unique tertiary structure. Statistical analysis of these 120 structures confirms two reported conformations and reveals a range of kinetically trapped, intermediate, and highly compacted states, demonstrating a maturation folding landscape likely driven by helix-helix compaction interactions.

Structural color from a coupled nanowire pair beyond the bonding and antibonding model

Optical resonances in nanostructures can be harnessed to produce a wide range of structural colors. Conversely, the analysis of structural colors has been used to clarify the nature of optical resonances. Here, we show that silicon nanowire (NW) pairs can display a wide range of structural colors by controlling their radiative coupling. This is accomplished by exciting a series of Fabry–Pérot-like modes where light is repeatedly scattered between two NWs. These modes are beyond the expectation from the conventional chemical bonding model under a quasi-electrostatic approximation, in which only bonding and antibonding modes can be formed in a pair system through modal hybridization. The additional eigenmodes found in a two-resonator system originate from the nonlinear, frequency-dependent coupling strength derived from the radiative nature of low- Q resonators. The Fabry–Pérot modes can be tuned across the entire visible frequency range by varying the distance between two NWs, leading to what we believe is a new type of universal building blocks that can provide structural color within a subwavelength footprint. The presented results pave the way toward the design and usage of highly tunable resonances that exploit the radiative coupling of high-index nanostructures.

xCDAT: A Python Package for Simple and Robust Analysis of Climate Data

xCDAT (Xarray Climate Data Analysis Tools) is an open-source Python package that extends Xarray (Hoyer & Hamman, 2017) for climate data analysis on structured grids. xCDAT streamlines analysis of climate data by exposing common climate analysis operations through a set of straightforward APIs. Some of xCDAT’s key features include spatial averaging, temporal averaging, and regridding. These features are inspired by the Community Data Analysis Tools (CDAT) library (Dean N. Williams et al., 2009) (D. N. Williams, 2014) (Doutriaux et al., 2019) and leverage powerful packages in the Xarray ecosystem including xESMF (Zhuang et al., 2023), xgcm (Abernathey et al., 2022), and CF xarray (Cherian et al., 2023). To ensure general compatibility across various climate models, xCDAT operates on datasets that are compliant with the Climate and Forecast (CF) metadata conventions (Hassell et al., 2017).
