Radial and directional solidification of metallic systems in space

Investigation of the solidification behavior of spherical specimens of Ni-12 wt % Sn and Ni-1 wt % Ag that froze radially from the surface toward the center and cylindrical specimens of Al-33 wt % Cu eutectic that froze directionally under appropriately selected conditions of thermal gradient at the solid-liquid interface and growth rate. Possible effects of vacuum and low gravity conditions, under which the spherical specimens were processed, on observed nucleation and growth phenomena are discussed. A genetic explanation is given of observed microstructures, and the distributions of alloying elements is discussed. In directionally solidified eutectic specimens a comparison is made between statistically evaluated growth defects in Skylab and in ground specimens.

Erosion in radial inflow turbines. Volume 4: Erosion rates on internal surfaces

An analytic study of the rate at which material is removed by ingested dust impinging on the internal surfaces of a typical radial inflow turbine is presented. Results show that there are several regions which experience very severe erosion loss, and other regions that experience moderate levels of erosion loss: (1) the greatest amount of material loss occurs on the trailing edges of the nozzle blades where very high velocity, moderate angle impacts occur. The tip regions of ductile materials are also subjected to serious levels of erosion loss; (2) moderate amounts of erosion occur near the end of the scroll and on a few of the nozzle blades near this location. Results are presented in the form of surface contours that exist on the scroll and blade surfaces after continuous particulate ingestion with time.

FORTRAN program for predicting off-design performance of radial-inflow turbines

The FORTRAN IV program uses a one-dimensional solution of flow conditions through the turbine along the mean streamline. The program inputs needed are the design-point requirements and turbine geometry. The output includes performance and velocity-diagram parameters over a range of speed and pressure ratio. Computed performance is compared with the experimental data from two radial-inflow turbines and with the performance calculated by a previous computer program. The flow equations, program listing, and input and output for a sample problem are given.

Observation and explanation of a 0.3% sunward radial streaming of 1 to 5 GV cosmic radiation

A high-energy proton telescope on board the HEOS-1 satellite obtained quiet-time anisotropy data between December 1968 and April 1970. Analysis of the data showed an integral radial streaming component towards the sun of 0.3% for particles of rigidity greater than 1 GV. This value is not explicable in terms of any experimental defect, the effect of the earth's magnetosphere or energy loss effects under spherical symmetry in the solar cavity. An explanation in terms of a falling off ecliptic gradient in cosmic ray density most affecting the 1-5 GV range would seem to be the most compelling.

Heavy ion beam probe measurements of radial potential profiles in the Modified Penning discharge

The reported measurements were conducted with the primary beam of an ion beam probe in a plasma discharge in which the space potential represents a large fraction of the primary beam energy. A Lewis ion beam probe similar to the device employed by Jobes et al. (1969) was used in the investigation. The apparatus used in the experiments is discussed along with the experimental procedure. The approximate radial potential profile was obtained by observing the effect of the plasma on the trajectory of the primary beam.

The dynamics of atmospheric dust particles in aircraft auxiliary power radial inflow turbines

The results of analytical and experimental studies of the trajectories that atmospheric dust particles follow as they move through a radial inflow turbine are presented. The study reveals the nature of the impacts that occur within the turbine and indicates which surfaces are expected to experience the most severe erosion. In addition, a dimensionless parameter is derived which can be used during preliminary design analysis to indicate the sizes of the particles that will be most damaging to the turbine.

Time-dependent effects in the radially streaming particle model

The radially streaming particle model for broad quasar and Seyfert galaxy emission features is modified to include sources of time dependence. The results seem to correlate with reported observations of multiple components, variability, and transient features in the wings of Seyfert and quasi-stellar emission lines.

Radial level

Actual angle indicator is a liquid captured inside cylindrical transparent tube that is radially mounted around or under 360 deg scale. Device is functional and accurate within full 360 deg spectrum and instantly determines any surface angle without making adjustments since it has no moving parts.

Analysis of radially cracked ring segments subject to forces and couples

Results of planar boundary collocation analysis are given for ring segment (C shaped) specimens with radial cracks, subjected to combined forces and couples. Mode I stress intensity factors and crack mouth opening displacements were determined for ratios of outer to inner radius in the range 1.1 to 2.5, and ratios of crack length to segment width in the range 0.1 to 0.8.

Computer program for design analysis of radial-inflow turbines

A computer program written in FORTRAN that may be used for the design analysis of radial-inflow turbines was documented. The following information is included: loss model (estimation of losses), the analysis equations, a description of the input and output data, the FORTRAN program listing and list of variables, and sample cases. The input design requirements include the power, mass flow rate, inlet temperature and pressure, and rotational speed. The program output data includes various diameters, efficiencies, temperatures, pressures, velocities, and flow angles for the appropriate calculation stations. The design variables include the stator-exit angle, rotor radius ratios, and rotor-exit tangential velocity distribution. The losses are determined by an internal loss model.

Lossy radial diffusion of relativistic Jovian electrons

The radial diffusion equation with synchrotron losses was solved by the Laplace transform method for near-equatorially mirroring relativistic electrons. The evolution of a power law distribution function was found and the characteristics of synchrotron burn-off are stated in terms of explicit parameters for an arbitrary diffusion coefficient. Emissivity from the radiation belts of Jupiter was studied. Asymptotic forms for the distribution in the strong synchrotron loss regime are provided.

Temperature distribution study in a cooled radial inflow turbine rotor

A numerical study to determine the temperature distribution in the rotor of a radial inflow turbine is presented. The study is based on the use of the finite element method in the three dimensional heat conduction problem. Different cooling techniques with various coolant to primary mass flow ratios are investigated. The resulting temperature distribution in the rotor are presented for comparison.
