MicroBooNE Public Data Sets: a Collaborative Tool for LArTPC Software Development

Among liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments MicroBooNE is the one that continually took physics data for the longest time (2015-2021), and represents the state of the art for reconstruction and analysis with this detector. Recently published analyses include oscillation physics results, searches for anomalies and other BSM signatures, and cross section measurements. LArTPC detectors are being used in current experiments such as ICARUS and SBND, and being planned for future experiments such as DUNE. MicroBooNE has recently released to the public two of its data sets, with the goal of enabling collaborative software developments with other LArTPC experiments and with AI or computing experts. These data sets simulate neutrino interactions on top of off-beam data, which include cosmic ray background and noise. The data sets are released in two formats: the native art/ROOT format used internally by the collaboration and familiar to other LArTPC experts, and the HDF5 format which contains reduced and simplified content and is suitable for usage by the broader community. This contribution presents the open data sets, discusses their motivation, the technical implementation, and the extensive documentation -- all inspired by FAIR principles. Finally, opportunities for collaborations are discussed.

The Publication and Endorsement of the ASME/ANS Probabilistic Risk Assessment Standard for Advanced Non-Light Water Reactor Nuclear Power Plants

Due to growing interest in non-light water reactor (NLWR) concepts, the predecessor to the American Nuclear Society (ANS)/American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Joint Committee on Nuclear Risk Management (JCNRM) initiated development of a NLWR probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) standard in 2006. The developed standard, released for trial use in 2013, was the first integral PRA standard created by the JCNRM, containing requirements ranging from the development of initiating events to the analysis of offsite radiological consequence. Based on feedback from pilot applications of the trial standard, a revised version of the standard was developed and balloted in 2020, with unanimous passage by the JCNRM and formal publication as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard in 2021. The paper provides an overview of the standard and its development process. In addition, the paper reviews the latest status of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission endorsement efforts through Regulatory Guide 1.247.

Community Public Mobility Using On-Demand, Low-Speed Electric Vehicles: A Case Study in Downtown St. Louis, Missouri

Legacy fixed route transit systems designed to serve commuters struggle to provide efficient and effective service for short neighborhood trips and for population groups unable to access and egress transit stops using active modes (e.g., elderly, disabled). Neighborhood on-demand transit (ODT) services using low-speed electric vehicles (LSEV) are an innovative technological solution that can help fill this gap in service (e.g., short, high-frequency trips) for diverse populations and trip types. This study evaluated user characteristics and travel behavior for a neighborhood ODT service (using LSEVs) in downtown St. Louis, Missouri using responses from a community survey (n=244), ridership data, and vehicle trajectory information. A comparative analysis between neighborhood ODT, fixed route transit, and transportation network companies (TNC) was also conducted from the perspectives of total travel time, cost, and greenhouse gas emissions. Ultimately, the goal of the analysis was to motivate and inform holistic public mobility systems where different services are optimized to meet specific community needs. Findings indicate that the neighborhood ODT was effective at reaching diverse populations (elderly (20%), lower income (27%), and households with limited access to private vehicles (34%)). ODT reduced total travel time by 32% compared to fixed route transit, produced 2.4 - 4.3 times less greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile (compared to transit and TNCs), and was more affordable (free to users) than alternative options ($1 for transit, $10-12 for TNCs). Overall satisfaction rates were high, with 80% of respondents rating the service a 4 or 5 out of 5.

Hydrogen Storage System Modeling: Public Access, Maintenance, and Enhancements

The overall vision of this project is to provide ownership and support for maintaining existing material-based hydrogen storage systems models. This includes making models accessible to the research community through a public web page and updating and enhancing storage systems models to support material developers in assessing their materials relative to DOE vehicle-level targets. Key elements for FY24: Continue to update and enhance existing models for broader application and user-friendliness. Develop tools to evaluate the performance of hydrogen storage materials developed under HyMARC activities or other fundamental hydrogen storage materials discovery research. Expand the application of current hydrogen storage models beyond light-duty vehicles to include medium-, heavy-duty, and mining vehicles and stationary application(s). Develop models for alternatives, such as LOHCs, to material-based systems (liquefied & gaseous H2) and compare for various mobile and stationary use cases.

ACCELERATING MICROREACTOR DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT THROUGH JOINT PUBLIC TEST BEDS AND PRIVATE ADVANCED REACTOR DEVELOPMENT

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has funded the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) to accelerate the development and commercialization of small modular reactors and other advanced reactor technologies. As part of this effort NIRC is building two strategic assets at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to facilitate public-private partnerships for the development and testing of advanced nuclear microreactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMR). One will provide a safe, secure, and affordable location for High-Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fueled reactors and a second for Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) fueled reactors. Together these testbeds fill a nuclear testing infrastructure gap. The availability of such comprehensive testing facilities at the national labs eliminates the significant financial and operational burdens associated with each developer building and licensing their own test facilities. Consequently, this approach will not only accelerate technological innovation and reduce time-to-market for advanced nuclear solutions but it also underscores the DOE's commitment to fostering an ecosystem where nuclear energy will thrive as a clean, reliable, and efficient source of power. The Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) and Laboratory for Operations and Testing in the United States (LOTUS) have planned availability in 2026, and 2027 respectively.

HANDBOOK BEST PRACTICES FOR ORGANIZING PUBLIC E WASTE COLLECTION EVENTS Indoor and Outdoor Settings

This handbook was created to share best practices of organizing public e-waste collection events in the United States. The steps and checklists outlined in this handbook have been drawn from Sunnking’s decade’s long experience of organizing large scale outdoor collection events in New York. These practices have been verified by INL and ECyclers of Idaho to work well for both indoor and outdoor events in Idaho at a smaller scale. Understanding that the local conditions vary significantly, we have compiled key deciding factors to share in this handbook. We hope that by following these steps, you will succeed in organizing your own events. Although e-waste events typically require careful logistics planning due to the nature of the materials, the experience is very rewarding to bring the community together.

Alternative Fuels for Public and Private Vehicle Fleets in Rural Areas

This fact sheet identifies opportunities for integration of alternative fuel vehicles in public and private fleets in rural areas, and was developed through the U.S. Department of Energy's Communities Local Energy Action Program (Communities LEAP). The project engaged community stakeholders, fleet operators, and local officials across ten rural counties in western Alabama to explore opportunities for expanding access to alternative transportation fuels. Guided by a regional coalition and supported by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), the effort emphasized challenges and related potential technical solutions. The fact sheet highlights different applications of alternative fuel vehicles and provides a framework for selecting the vehicle technology that meets a given stakeholder's needs.

Forecasting disease risk for increased epidemic preparedness in public health

Emerging infectious diseases pose a growing threat to human populations. Many of the world's epidemic diseases (particularly those transmitted by intermediate hosts) are known to be highly sensitive to long-term changes in climate and short-term fluctuations in the weather. The application of environmental data to the study of disease offers the capability to demonstrate vector-environment relationships and potentially forecast the risk of disease outbreaks or epidemics. Accurate disease forecasting models would markedly improve epidemic prevention and control capabilities. This chapter examines the potential for epidemic forecasting and discusses the issues associated with the development of global networks for surveillance and prediction. Existing global systems for epidemic preparedness focus on disease surveillance using either expert knowledge or statistical modelling of disease activity and thresholds to identify times and areas of risk. Predictive health information systems would use monitored environmental variables, linked to a disease system, to be observed and provide prior information of outbreaks. The components and varieties of forecasting systems are discussed with selected examples, along with issues relating to further development.
