Psychrometric chart for physiological research

Chart facilitates use of graphical techniques for solving problems involving thermodynamic properties of moist air. The properties are presented, and their units of measurement are listed. Chart presenting conditions at standard atmosphere pressure at sea level is most useful.

To develop a spectral analyzer for physiological and medical use

Scientific requirements necessary to develop a spectral analyzer for monitoring mammalian subjects, are discussed. The analyzer measures dynamic or time dependent data as a measure of the subjects operating status. Measurable data include metabolic rate, body temperature, and blood constituents like glucose, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, and lactic acid. Metabolic cycles were found with periodicities in the range of minutes and hours; longer cycles in body weight (3 1/2 days and 60 days), indicative of metabolic processes, were also found.

Research to determine the role of gravity in neurosecretory physiology

In an effort to determine the effects of gravity in regulating the synthesis, transport, storage, and release of octopeptides from the hypothalamo-neurophypophyseal system, the teleost fresh water fish was studied. A labyrinthectomized fish was subjected to a gravitational orientation of -G sub z for three days. Results show the fish had reduced levels of adenyl cyclose activity in its kidneys when compared to labyrinthectomized and unoperated fish exposed to normal gravitational orientation (+G sub 2) for the same period of time. Efforts were also made to determine the presence of vasopressin in the neurophypophysis and peripheral target organs.

Remote sensing of changes in morphology and physiology of trees under stress

Results of continuing studies of forest trees subjected to varying types of stress are reported. Both greenhouse and field studies are included. Greenhouse work with tree seedlings exposed to varying levels of NaCl and CaCl2 in the soil indicated that, in the initial stages, palisade cells shrink and the amount of air space in the leaf increases. As the severity of damage increases, the cells of the spongy mesophyll shrink and flatten, and the amount of air space in the leaf decreases. Statistical analysis of foliar reflectance and associated moisture content data led to a series of regression equations for predicting foliar moisture content from reflectance data. Equations were calculated for three species, yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton), sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and white ash (Fraxinus americana L.) having multiple correlation coefficients of 0.98, 0.94 and 0.93 respectively. Interpretation of multispectral imagery of the Ann Arbor Forestry Test Site (NASA Site 190) provided evidence that infections of Fomes annosus can be detected in the early stages. Infections of two needle cast diseases were also detected in conifer plantations in the test site. A study of automatic interpretation of multispectral scanner imagery for tree species recognition provided encouraging results.

Remote sensing of changes in morphology and physiology of trees under stress

Measurements on foliage samples collected from several drought and salt treated plants revealed that leaf thickness decreased with increasing severity of the drought treatment and increased with increasing severity of treatment with NaCl, but remained essentially unaffected by treatment with CaCl2. Airborne data collected by multispectral scanner indicated that false color images provide selective enhancement of a diseased area. Comparison of simulated and actual aerial color and color IR photography revealed that the color renditions of the MSS simulations agreed closely with those of the actual photography.

Separate physiological roles for two isozymes of pyridine nucleotide-linked glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in chicken.

The isozymes considered are designated 'liver type' and 'muscle type' based on the tissue of highest concentration. Electrophoretic analysis shows that the liver type is found in small amounts or is undetectable in all tissues studied except liver. The muscle type is found in skeletal muscles and kidney. Presumptive hybrid enzymes occur at low levels in chicken liver and kidney. The tissue distribution of glyceron-3-P dehydrogenase in several birds capable of sustained flight is different than in chicken.

Cardiovascular responses to glucagon - Physiologic measurement by external recordings.

Assessment by noninvasive polygraphic techniques of the cardiovascular responses of normal subjects to intravenous injections of glucagon and glucagon diluent. A blinding procedure which eliminated observer bias was used during the reading of tracings. Analysis of group results showed that glucagon provoked uniformly significant changes, including increase in heart rate, blood pressure, pressure-rate product, and ejection time index, and decrease in prejection period, mechanical and electromechanical systole, left ventricular ejection time, and the ratio PEP/LVET. The principal results correlated well with those of previous studies of the hemodynamic effects of glucagon.

Control mechanisms in physiological rhythms

A search was made for the factors involved in regulating rhythmic body functions. The basic premise was that at a particular point in time, any cell can normally act in one of two ways. It can either be engaged in dividing or carrying out its particular function. Experimental results indicate rhythmic functions are controlled by a lighting regime and that an inverse correlation exists between rhythms of cell division and cell function. Data also show rhythms are a function of animal sex and environment.
