Algae Biofilm Produced from Anaerobic Digester Wastewater Demonstrated as Biofertilizer for Dwarf Wheat

Aims: To correlate yield of dwarf wheat fertilized with algae biofilm produced using anaerobic digester effluent (digestate) from a municipal water resource recovery facility as nutrient source and compare with yield using non-algae biofilm based fertilizers and a negative control. Study Design: Greenhouse testing for measurement of biomass yields and statistical analysis of wheat yield data results. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Biological Engineering Algae Processing and Products Facility greenhouse between March and June, 2024. Methodology: Yield of a dwarf cultivar of red spring wheat was measured as a function of four treatments including three fertilizers and a negative control: (1) algae biofilm cultivated on anaerobic digester effluent, (2) positive control of Osmocote commercial slow release fertilizer, (3) anaerobic digester biosolids, and (4) negative control with no fertilizer addition. Results: Average yield values (gm) for the four treatments were: (1) 1.25, (2) 0.99, (3) 0.72, and (4) 0.52, respectively. Algae biofilm fertilizer performed significantly better than Osmocote with P = .002, anaerobic digester biosolids with P = .05, and no fertilizer addition with P = .05. Struvite, a slow release fertilizer, was observed to be associated with the algae biofilm as a precipitate of the high concentrations of nutrients within the anaerobic digester water. Struvite (MgNH4PO46H2O) releases plant available nitrogen and phosphorus over time and is biologically precipitated due to the increase in solution pH as a result of photosynthesis by the algae biofilm. Conclusion: Algae biofilm cultivated on anaerobic digester wastewater can serve as a biofertilizer for recycling nutrients within the biosphere for sustainable nutrient management.

Dopant diffused Si surface passivation by H 2 S gas reaction and quinhydrone-methanol treatment

Phosphorus (n + ) and boron (p + ) diffused n-type textured Cz Si wafers are passivated by two different methods: gas phase H 2 S reaction and quinhydrone-methanol (QH-MeOH) solution. The dopant diffused surface passivation quality, quantified by saturation current density (J 0 ), strongly depends on the diffusion type and the passivation method. H 2 S reaction at 550ºC passivates n + diffused surface as good as state-of-the-art Si oxide/silicon nitride stack (SiO 2 /SiN X ), while QH-MeOH passivates p + diffused surface to the same level as state-of-the-art atomic layer deposited aluminum oxide / silicon nitride stack (Al 2 O 3 /SiN X ).

Combined Algal Processing for the Synthesis of Liquid Oleofuels and Products (CAPSLOC) - WBS 1.3.4.204

Combined Algal Processing for the Synthesis of Liquid Oleofuels and Products (CAPSLOC) aims to develop a biorefinery concept that is composition-agnostic and enables economically, environmentally, and socially viable biofuel production by maximizing the value from each fraction. To achieve this, we have employed an iterative approach between R&D and TEA/LCA to establish process targets and quantify improvements in the minimum fuel selling price (MFSP), reduce carbon intensity, and support the state of technology (SOT). We have surveyed various methods for biomass pretreatment and successfully demonstrated pre-pilot scale pretreatment in batch mode. Using techniques such as lipid modification, fermentation, mild oxidative treatment (MOT), and carbonization, we have developed biofuel precursors and a range of value-added co-products. Our project has demonstrated significant improvements in key aspects of algae processing, particularly in pretreatment technologies suitable for variable composition, co-products available from lipid and extracted solid streams, conditioning and fermenting high-protein hydrolysates, and recovering nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrients for recycling to cultivation ponds. The success of this project will support the commercialization of a sustainable microalgal biorefinery industry.

Nutrient Recovery from Algae Residues Using Mild Oxidative Treatment

Algal biorefining to fuels and chemicals frequently requires both fuel production and nutrient recycle pathways. Mild Oxidative Treatment (MOT) is a promising wet oxidation route that simultaneously converts nitrogen and carbon in algae hydrolysate and extracted residues into ammonia and carboxylic acids (up to C5), respectively. The latter can be converted to sustainable aviation fuel by ketonization, condensation, and hydrodeoxygenation. We show that for a Scenedesmus algae under certain oxidation conditions, the nitrogen in the residues can be converted quantitatively to ammonia and recovered by cation exchange, while almost half of the carbon can be converted to carboxylic acids, mainly acetic acid. At the same time, we also show that soluble phosphorus in the form of phosphate can be selectively recovered by anion exchange, leaving a clean aqueous carboxylic acid stream for upgrading to fuels.

Synthetic methods for crystallite size control of bimetallic polyanionic battery compositions

Bimetallic polyanionic materials, such as silver vanadium phosphorus oxide (Ag 2 VO 2 PO 4 , SVOP), are promising cathode materials for Li batteries due in part to their large capacity and high current capability. A new synthesis of Ag 2 VO 2 PO 4 based on microwave heating is disclosed, where the reaction time is reduced by approximately 100 times relative to other reported methods, and the crystallite size is controlled via synthesis temperature, showing a linear positive correlation of crystallite size with temperature. Reaction times of an hour or less are sufficient to render phase-pure material after reaction at 50° C. to 180° C., significantly lower than the temperatures reported for other methods. Crystallite sizes between 42 nm and 60 nm are achieved by the novel method, smaller than by other methods. Silver/vanadium atomic ratios of 1.96 to 2.04 in the as-synthesized SVOP result and appear temperature-dependent. Notably, under galvanostatic reduction, the Ag 2 VO 2 PO 4 sample with the smallest crystallite size delivers the highest capacity and shows the highest loaded voltage.
