Rigid and differential rotation driven by oscillations within the sun

Long-period oscillations involving the entire mass of the sun rotate like rigid bodies, and their oscillatory power is distributed nonuniformly across the solar surface. A mostly qualitative theory is constructed showing how the oscillations drive convective flows of global scale, which then organize photospheric and coronal magnetic fields into patterns which rotate rigidly. The convection rises along long graceful curves, creating the magnetic-arcade structures in the corona and unipolar photospheric regions on each side by dynamo action. These are thought to be the origin of the sector structure in the solar wind. The rigid patterns of convective upwelling also force nonrigid horizontal winds on the solar surface. Under the action of the Coriolis force, the main horizontal motions are converted into polar and equatorial wind currents which have the proper directions to drive the differential rotation long observed on the sun's surface.

Chordwise propagation of dynamic stall cells on an oscillating airfoil

The dynamic stall phenomenon was examined in detail by analyzing a set of unsteady pressure data obtained on an airfoil oscillating in pitch. These data were for sinusoidal oscillations which penetrated the stall region in varying degrees, and here the effort was concentrated on the chordwise propagation of pressure waves associated with the dynamic stall. It was found that this phenomenon could be quantified in terms of a pressure wave velocity which is consistently much less than free-stream velocity, and which varies directly with frequency. It was also found that even when the stall region has been deeply penetrated and a substantial dynamic stall occurs during the downstroke, stall recovery near minimum incidence will occur, followed by a potential flow behavior up to stall inception.

Relationships among classes of self-oscillating transistor parallel inverters

It recently has been shown in the literature that many dc-to-square-wave parallel inverters which are widely used in power-conditioning applications can be grouped into one of two families. Each family is characterized by an equivalent RLC network. Based on this approach, a classification procedure is presented for self-oscillating parallel inverters which makes evident natural relationships which exist between various inverter configurations. By utilizing concepts from the basic theory of negative resistance oscillators and the principle of duality as applied to nonlinear networks, a chain of relationships is established which enables a methodical transfer of knowledge gained about one family of inverters to any of the other families in the classification array.

A flight investigation of oscillating air forces: Equipment and technique

The equipment and techniques are described which are to be used in a project aimed at measuring oscillating air forces and dynamic aeroelastic response of a swept wing airplane at high subsonic speeds. Electro-hydraulic inertia type shakers installed in the wing tips will excite various elastic airplane modes while the related oscillating chordwise pressures at two spanwise wing stations and the wing mode shapes are recorded on magnetic tape. The data reduction technique, following the principle of a wattmeter harmonic analyzer employed by Bratt, Wight, and Tilly, utilizes magnetic tape and high speed electronic multipliers to record directly the real and imaginary components of oscillatory data signals relative to a simple harmonic reference signal. Through an extension of this technique an automatic flight-flutter-test data analyzer is suggested in which vector plots of mechanical admittance or impedance would be plotted during the flight test.

Short period oscillations in total electron content

The paper describes measurements of fluctuations in the total electron content along the propagation path of the radio beam between the ATS-6 geostationary satellite and the ground station. Short-period oscillations of the total electron content of about plus or minus 8 time 10 to the 13th electrons per sq m with a period of about 30 to 50 seconds were detected. These oscillations appear to be well correlated with the appearance of Type PC 4 micropulsations.

Distributed feedback acoustic surface wave oscillator

An acoustic surface wave oscillator is constructed from a semiconductor piezoelectric acoustic surface wave amplifier by providing appropriate perturbations at the piezoelectric boundary. The perturbations cause Bragg order reflections that maintain acoustic wave oscillation under certain conditions of gain and feedback.

Application of a finite difference method to the analysis of transonic flow over oscillating airfoils and wings

A finite difference method for solving the unsteady flow about harmonically oscillating wings is investigated. The procedure is based on separating the velocity potential into steady and unsteady parts and linearing the resulting unsteady differential equation for small disturbances. Solutions are obtained using relaxation procedures. The means for improving the solution stability characteristics of the relaxation process are explored. A direct procedure is formulated which permits obtaining solutions for combinations of Mach number and reduced frequency for which the relaxation process has proved unstable. The pressure distribution for an aspect ratio 5 rectangular wing oscillating in pitch is presented.

Electron plasma oscillations associated with type III radio bursts

Plasma wave electric field measurements with the solar orbiting Helios spacecraft have shown that intense (approximately 10 millivolts per meter) electron plasma oscillations occur in association with type III solar radio bursts. These observations confirm the basic mechanism, proposed in 1958, that type III radio emissions are produced by intense electron plasma oscillations excited in the solar corona by electrons ejected from a solar flare.

Exact solutions in oscillating airfoil theory

A result obtained by Williams (1977) for two-dimensional airfoils oscillating in an arbitrary subsonic parallel flowfield is reformulated to show that the pressure distribution induced by any deformation can be construed from the particular solutions for heaving and pitching motions. Specific formulas are presented for an oscillating control surface with a sealed gap.

A numerical study of the unsteady leading edge separation bubble on an oscillating airfoil

A preliminary study of the unsteady viscous flow in the region of an airfoil leading edge was performed, in which the interaction between the viscous and inviscid flow fields is neglected. The solution method uses the finite difference form of the governing equations throughout the separated flow field and incorporates a transition model based on the integral turbulence kinetic energy equation. The validity of the numerical procedure is verified by making comparisons with analytical solutions to several test problems, including unsteady flow over a plate oscillating in its own plane. The method was then applied to the problem of unsteady viscous flow over a NACA 0012 airfoil oscillating sinusoidally in pitch. The flow field characteristics were in qualitative agreement with experimental results. The bubble moved forward on the airfoil and decreased in size as incidence was increased. Viscous flow in the leading edge region was found to be quasi-steady, while bubble height varied inversely with Reynolds number.

Infrared continuum observations of five-minute oscillations

Infrared continuum observations of the sun at wavelengths between 10 and 30 microns show a nonisothermal response of the upper photosphere to compression waves associated with the five-minute oscillations. Observations were made with four broad-band filters with effective transmission wavelengths between 10 and 26 microns and with a 10 arcsec aperture. Further observations at submillimeter wavelengths with a 2-arcmin aperture did not resolve oscillatory fluctuations of five-minute period. Comparisons with velocity-field data of Howard (1976) suggest that the relaxation time of the photosphere exceeds (300/2 pi) seconds at the height of formation of the 26-micron continuum. The photosphere reponds to 3-mHz oscillatory motion with considerably less compression than expected for simple acoustic modes in an adiabatically responsive atmosphere, confirming the evanescent character of the five-minute oscillations.

An experimental evaluation of the application of the Kirchhoff formulation for sound radiation from an oscillating airfoil

The Kirchhoff integral formulation is evaluated for its effectiveness in quantitatively predicting the sound radiated from an oscillating airfoil whose chord length is comparable with the acoustic wavelength. A rigid airfoil section was oscillated at samll amplitude in a medium at rest to produce the sound field. Simultaneous amplitude and phase measurements were made of surface pressure and surface velocity distributions and the acoustic free field. Measured surface pressure and motion are used in applying the theory, and airfoil thickness and contour are taken into account. The result was that the theory overpredicted the sound pressure level by 2 to 5, depending on direction. Differences are also noted in the sound field phase behavior.

Two-dimensional oscillating airfoil test apparatus

A two-dimensional oscillating airfoil test apparatus is presented as a method of measuring unsteady aerodynamic forces on an airfoil or rotor blade section. The oscillating airfoil test rig, which was built for use in NASA Ames Research Center's 11x11-foot Transonic Wind Tunnel (speed range M = 0.4 - 1.4), allows determination of unsteady loadings and detailed pressure distributions on representative airfoil sections undergoing simulated pitching and flapping motions. The design details of the motion generating system and supporting structure are presented.

On the tidal oscillations of the liquid core of the earth

An important goal of a tidal theory is the improvement of nutational amplitude and of the parameters of the earth's elastic response. A theory of tidal oscillations inside a rotating elliptical earth was developed, with special emphasis on tides in the liquid core. The Molodensky and Kramer theory of the resonance effect, as caused by the proximity of the frequency of the free diurnal wobble of the liquid core to the frequency of K sub 1 astronomical tide, was amended to include the effect of the possible deviation of the liquid core from the state of neutral stability. Coupling effects between the toroidal and spheroidal oscillations, as caused by the Coriolis force, were taken into consideration.

Dynamic stall of an oscillating airfoil

Unsteady separated boundary layers and wakes were studied by investigating flow past an oscillating airfoil which in part models the retreating blade stall on the helicopters. The Navier-Stokes equations in terms of the vorticity and stream function for laminar flow were solved to determine the flow field around a modified NACA 0012 airfoil. After a fully developed flow was determined at zero incidence, the airfoil was oscillated in pitch through an angle of attack range from 0 deg to 20 deg. The computed streamlines during this pitch-up motion are in qualitative agreement with the trajectories of air bubbles observed in water tunnel experiments conducted with a NACA 0012 airfoil under the same conditions. During the pitch-down motion of the airfoil, the computed flow patterns cannot be compared with the experiments because the trajectories of air bubbles intersect.

Prediction of unsteady separated flows on oscillating airfoils

Techniques for calculating high Reynolds number flow around an airfoil undergoing dynamic stall are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on predicting the values of lift, drag, and pitching moments. Methods discussed include: the discrete potential vortex method; thin boundary layer method; strong interaction between inviscid and viscous flows; and solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. Empirical methods for estimating unsteady airloads on oscillating airfoils are also described. These methods correlate force and moment data from wind tunnel tests to indicate the effects of various parameters, such as airfoil shape, Mach number, amplitude and frequency of sinosoidal oscillations, mean angle, and type of motion.

The magnitude of Doppler signals produced by gravitational wave burst, continuous gravitational waves, and oscillations of the sun interacting with a spacecraft are considered. Expressions are worked out for the appropriate noise entering each measurement. The noise sources considered are the Doppler extractor, fluctuations in the solar wind and the troposphere, and fluctuations in the reference oscillator.
