Two neural network algorithms for designing optimal terminal controllers with open final time

Multilayer neural networks, trained by the backpropagation through time algorithm (BPTT), have been used successfully as state-feedback controllers for nonlinear terminal control problems. Current BPTT techniques, however, are not able to deal systematically with open final-time situations such as minimum-time problems. Two approaches which extend BPTT to open final-time problems are presented. In the first, a neural network learns a mapping from initial-state to time-to-go. In the second, the optimal number of steps for each trial run is found using a line-search. Both methods are derived using Lagrange multiplier techniques. This theoretical framework is used to demonstrate that the derived algorithms are direct extensions of forward/backward sweep methods used in N-stage optimal control. The two algorithms are tested on a Zermelo problem and the resulting trajectories compare favorably to optimal control results.

Nozzle diffuser for use with an open test section of a wind tunnel

The nozzle diffuser has an inlet in fluid communication with the narrowed inlet of an open test chamber in a conventional wind tunnel. The nozzle diffuser has a passageway extending from its inlet to an outlet in communication with the open test section. The passageway has an internal cross sectional area which increases from its inlet to its outlet and which may be defined by top and bottom isosceles trapezoid walls of a particular flare angle and by isosceles trapezoid side walls of a different flare angle. In addition, a collector having a decreasing internal cross sectional area from inlet to outlet may be provided at the opposite end of the test chamber such that its outlet is in communication with a diffuser located at this outlet.

A Vlasov theory for laminated composite circular beams with thin-walled open cross section

A Vlasov type beam theory for open-cross-section thin-walled circular beams constructed from laminated composite materials is presented. Comparisons are made to a branched shell analysis for a series of laminated thin-walled open cross-section curved beams. The results show that reasonable accuracy can be obtained for a variety of beam types, with a considerable reduction in analysis cost.

Identification of the open loop dynamics of the T700 turboshaft engine

A simplified model of the T700 turboshaft engine open loop dynamics valid within the normal operating range of the engine is developed. This model is obtained by linking the linearized point models obtained at five different operating conditions of the engine. The simplified model may be used with a model-based real time diagnostic scheme for fault detection and diagnostics, as well as for open loop engine dynamics studies and closed loop control analysis utilizing a user generated control law.

The free energies of partially open coronal magnetic fields

A simple model of the low corona is examined in terms of a static polytropic atmosphere in equilibrium with a global magnetic field. The question posed is whether magnetostatic states with partially open magnetic fields may contain magnetic energies in excess of those in fully open magnetic fields. Based on the analysis presented here, it is concluded that the cross-field electric currents in the pre-eruption corona are a viable source of the bulk of the energies in a mass ejection and its associated flare.

The form of spin orbitals for open-shell restricted Hartree-Fock reference functions

A new set of spin orbitals is proposed for single-reference correlation procedures based on an open-shell restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) reference function. The spatial parts of the new spin orbitals are from an open-shell RHF calculation. These spin orbitals form a complete, orthonormal set. The RHF single determinant based on these spin orbitals is an S sub 2 eigenfunction, but a linear combination of S sub z eigenfunctions. The advantage of these spin orbitals is that equations for perturbation theory or coupled-cluster theory are symmetric in the spin indices and hence the number of independent parameters to be determined is dramatically reduced.

Self-ordering physics in an open universe

This Letter presents an analytical model for the generation of density fluctuations likely to be appropriate for defects such as gauged and global strings, global monopoles, and textures, as well as for nontopological textures in an open or flat universe. For a reasonable range of parameters, these models in an open universe are compatible with both the level of MW fluctuations detected by COBE and with the fluctuations observed in the galaxy counts.

Dielectric measurement using an open ended coaxial line with an extended center conductor

Permittivity may be determined by measuring the complex reflection coefficient of an open-ended coaxial line placed in contact with a test sample. This method works best for liquid samples. For the measurement of non-liquid materials problems can arise. A perfect preparation is needed to provide a good contact between the tip and the dielectric medium. At times, the dimension of the sensor cannot be freely chosen, as is the case for the measurement of the dielectric constant of the xylem layer of a living tree. The influence of the installation of the sensor on a tree's water status must be minimized by using a small sensor. In such cases the capacitance cannot be optimized. By extending the center conductor of the open-ended coaxial line, some of these problems can be avoided. This provides an additional tool to tune the capacitance of the sensor by adjusting the length of the extension. Therefore the measurement accuracy can be optimized. The sensor also becomes sensitive to a larger volume. A comparative study of a flush and extended tipped probes shows that the ability to measure the dielectric constant of trees has been notably increased due to the extension of the center conductor.

A reciprocity formulation for the EM scattering by an obstacle within a large open cavity

A formulation based on a generalized reciprocity theorem is developed for analyzing the external high frequency EM scattering by a complex obstacle inside a relatively arbitrary open-ended waveguide cavity when it is illuminated by an external source. This formulation is also extended to include EM fields whose time dependence may be nonperiodic. A significant advantage of this formulation is that it allows one to break up the analysis into two independent parts; one deals with the waveguide cavity shape alone and the other with the obstacle alone. The external scattered field produced by the obstacle (in the presence of the waveguide cavity structure) is given in terms of a generalized reciprocity integral over a surface S(T) corresponding to the interior waveguide cavity cross section located conveniently but sufficiently close to the obstacle. Furthermore, the fields coupled into the cavity from the source in the exterior region generally need to propagate only one-way via the open front end (which is directly illuminated) to the interior surface S(T) in this approach, and not back, in order to find the external field scattered by the obstacle.

Wind tunnel tests on airfoil boundary control using a backward opening slot

This report presents the results of an investigation to determine the effect of boundary layer control on the lift and drag of an airfoil equipped with a backward opening slot. Various slot locations, widths of opening, and pressures, were used. The tests were conducted in the Five-Foot Atmospheric Wind Tunnel of the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. The greatest increase in maximum lift was 96 per cent, the greatest decrease in minimum drag was 27 per cent, and the greatest increase in the ratio, maximum lift coefficient/minimum drag coefficient, was 151 per cent.

Investigation of air flow in open-throat wind tunnels

Tests were conducted on the 6-inch wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to form a part of a research on open-throat wind tunnels. The primary object of this part of the research was to study a type of air pulsation which has been encountered in open-throat tunnels, and to find the most satisfactory means of eliminating such pulsations. In order to do this it was necessary to study the effects of different variable on all of the important characteristics of the tunnel. This paper gives not only the results of the study of air pulsations and methods of eliminating them, but also the effects of changing the exit-cone diameter and flare and the effects of air leakage from the return passage. It was found that the air pulsations in the 6-inch wind tunnel could be practically eliminated by using a moderately large flare on the exit cone in conjunction with leakage introduced by cutting holes in the exit cone somewhat aft of its minimum diameter.

Secondary Stresses in Open Box Beams Subjected to Torsion

In open box beams subjected to torsion, secondary stresses arise owing to lateral bending of the spar caps. The present paper outlines a simple method for estimating the magnitude of these stresses and gives the results of tests of an open box beam in the neighborhood of a discontinuity where the cover changed from the top to the bottom of the box.

Pressure Seal For Frequently Opened Hatch

Pressure-assisted seal for frequently opened hatch includes two sealing rings retained positively so not pulled out during opening. Seal makes contact with hatch well before hatch starts to squeeze rings extending distance over which seal becomes engaged. Improvements include more-secure mounting, redundancy, and better initial sealing action. Also minimizes loss of gas during closure by deflecting inward and closing gap. This action helps differential pressure to force hatch closed.

Bypassing An Open-Circuit Power Cell

Collection of bypass circuits enables battery consisting series string of cells to continue to function when one of its cells fails in open-circuit (high-resistance) condition. Basic idea simply to shunt current around defective cell to prevent open circuit from turning off battery altogether. Bypass circuits dissipate little power and are nearly immune to false activation.

Effect of Impact Damage and Open Hole on Compressive Strength of Hybrid Composite Laminates

Impact damage tolerance is a frequently listed design requirement for composites hardware. The effect of impact damage and open hole size on laminate compressive strength was studied on sandwich beam specimens which combine CFRP-GFRP hybrid skins and a syntactic foam core. Three test specimen configurations have been investigated for this study. The first two were sandwich beams which were loaded in pure bending (by four point flexure). One series had a skin damaged by impact, and the second series had a circular hole machined through one of the skins. The reduction of compressive strength with increasing damage (hole) size was compared. Additionally a third series of uniaxially loaded open hole compression coupons were tested to generate baseline data for comparison with both series of sandwich beams.

A comparative study between shielded and open coplanar waveguide discontinuities

A comparative study between open and shielded coplanar waveguide (CPW) discontinuities is presented. The space domain integral equation method is used to characterize several discontinuities such as the open-end CPW and CPW series stubs. Two different geometries of CPW series stubs (straight and bent stubs) are compared with respect to resonant frequency and radiation loss. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to different CPW shunt stubs is evaluated experimentally. The notion of forced radiation simulation is presented, and the results of such a simulation are compared to the actual radiation loss obtained rigorously. It is shown that such a simulation cannot give reliable results concerning radiation loss from printed circuits.

Open system environment procurement

Relationships between the request for procurement (RFP) process and open system environment (OSE) standards are described. A guide was prepared to help Federal agency personnel overcome problems in writing an adequate statement of work and developing realistic evaluation criteria when transitioning to an OSE. The guide contains appropriate decision points and transition strategies for developing applications that are affordable, scalable and interoperable across a broad range of computing environments. While useful, the guide does not eliminate the requirement that agencies posses in-depth expertise in software development, communications, and database technology in order to evaluate open systems.
