Process Research of Polycrystalline Silicon Material (PROPSM)

An investigation was begun into the usefulness of molecular hydrogen annealing on polycrystalline solar cells. No improvement was realized even after twenty hours of hydrogenation. Thus, samples were chosen on the basis of: (1) low open circuit voltage; (2) low shunt conductance; and (3) high light generated current. These cells were hydrogenated in molecular hydrogen at 300 C. The differences between the before and after hydrogenation values are so slight as to be negligible. These cells have light generated current densities that indicate long minority carrier diffusion lengths. The open circuit voltage appears to be degraded, and quasi-neutral recombination current enhanced. Therefore, molecular hydrogen is not usful for passivating electrically active defects.

Vertical organic electrochemical transistors for complementary circuits

Abstract Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) and OECT-based circuitry offer great potential in bioelectronics, wearable electronics and artificial neuromorphic electronics because of their exceptionally low driving voltages (<1 V), low power consumption (<1 µW), high transconductances (>10 mS) and biocompatibility 1–5 . However, the successful realization of critical complementary logic OECTs is currently limited by temporal and/or operational instability, slow redox processes and/or switching, incompatibility with high-density monolithic integration and inferior n-type OECT performance 6–8 . Here we demonstrate p- and n-type vertical OECTs with balanced and ultra-high performance by blending redox-active semiconducting polymers with a redox-inactive photocurable and/or photopatternable polymer to form an ion-permeable semiconducting channel, implemented in a simple, scalable vertical architecture that has a dense, impermeable top contact. Footprint current densities exceeding 1 kA cm −2 at less than ±0.7 V, transconductances of 0.2–0.4 S, short transient times of less than 1 ms and ultra-stable switching (>50,000 cycles) are achieved in, to our knowledge, the first vertically stacked complementary vertical OECT logic circuits. This architecture opens many possibilities for fundamental studies of organic semiconductor redox chemistry and physics in nanoscopically confined spaces, without macroscopic electrolyte contact, as well as wearable and implantable device applications.

Variable Effects of Dispersed Nanoparticles on Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Technology has recently seen a drastic physical downsizing. Wearable and small devices with lower power demands have become the norm and continue to be more prominent in daily life. With modern devices growing smaller and requiring less electricity, a power source will always be needed. Contemporary batteries are the most common means to power small electronics. However, reliance on conventional batteries may prove insufficient due to the non renewable resources (Li, Ni, Co) required to power the growing number of individual devices each person may own. Additionally, the infrastructure required to harvest and recycle the sheer number of batteries produced presents a further logistic issue to be addressed. A promising alternative to batteries is the usage of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). TENGs are a class of energy harvesting devices that utilize triboelectric generation to convert mechanical/kinetic energy into electrical energy and have exhibited efficiencies up to 85 % at low frequencies. TENGs exhibit a high voltage but low current. Even with the high voltage, the low current output proves to be a significant factor preventing undoped TENGs from being commercially viable. This review will investigate factors that increase the total current produced by TENGs when nanoparticles are utilized in TENGs. Factors such as increasing porosity, surface area, surface charge density, charge storage, deep trap formation, and dielectric constant can be altered to affect the total current by impregnating nanoparticles into the polymer material will be explored.

Theoretical performance of multi-layer grid patterns for solar cells

Multilayer grid patterns consist of fine closely spaced grid lines overlaid by coarser patterns of wider and thicker grid lines to collect the current from the finer grids with low series voltage drop and low active-layer sheet losses. An analytical approach leads to closed form solutions with simple relationships between the power losses in the active layer, in the grid and shadowing losses for optimum design proportions. The results show that multilayer grids, with line thickness equal to line width, greatly reduce losses in cell efficiency under concentration conditions of high current collection. (AlGa)As-pn GaAs cells of areas 1-25 sq cm and sheet resistance 40 ohms/square are considered. Also the performance of a n/p GaAs cell of dimensions 10 x 10 cm is studied. With optimized grid patterns high efficiencies are predicted for large area cells.

Low temperature testing of Li-SOCl2 cells

The performance and safety characteristics Li-SOCl2 cells were evaluated at -40 C. Tests were conducted on cells of several defferent designs to determine the influence of cell design on performance and safety. The cells exhibited low operating voltages, poor voltage regulation, and low capacity at -40 C. The performance of the cells was found to be critically dependent on the cell design. No safety problems were observed during discharge to 2.0 V under constant current and constant load operating conditions. Cells subjected to prolonged periods of continuous drain at constant-load did not vent/rupture upon warm-up. Cells subjected to prolonged reversal were found to be potentially hazardous. Microcalorimetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies performed on the cells suggested that those containing a catalyst may exhibit poor shelf life.

Positive Voltage Hazard to EMU Crewman from Currents through Plasma

This paper describes the model of the EMU with a human body in the circuit that has been used by NASA to evaluate the low positive voltage hazard. The model utilizes the electron collection characterization from on orbit Langmuir probe data as representative of electron collection to a positive charged surface with a wide range of on orbit plasma temperature and density conditions. The data has been unified according to non-linear theoretical temperature and density variation of the electron saturated probe current collection theory and used as a model for the electron collection at EMU surfaces. Vulnerable paths through the EMU connecting through the crewman s body have been identified along with electrical impedance of the exposed body parts. The body impedance information is merged with the electron collection characteristics in circuit simulation software (SPICE). The assessment shows that currents can be on the order of 20 mA for a 15 V exposure and of order 4 mA at 3V. These currents formally violate NASA protocol for electric current exposures however the human factors associated with subjective consequences of noxious stimuli from low voltage exposure during the stressful conditions of EVA are an area of active inquiry.

Water-absorbing capacitor system for measuring relative humidity

A method and apparatus using a known water-absorbent polymer as a capacitor which is operated at a dc voltage for measuring relative humidity is presented. When formed as a layer between porous electrically-conductive electrodes and operated in an RC oscillator circuit, the oscillator frequency varies inversely with the partial pressure of the moisture to be measured. In a preferred embodiment, the capacitor is formed from Nafion and is operated at a low dc voltage with a resistor as an RC circuit in an RC oscillator. At the low voltage, the leakage current is proper for oscillation over a satisfactory range. The frequency of oscillation varies in an essentially linear fashion with relative humidity which is represented by the moisture being absorbed into the Nafion. The oscillation frequency is detected by a frequency detector.

Open-circuit voltage improvements in low-resistivity solar cells

Mechanisms limiting the open-circuit voltage in 0.1 ohm-cm solar cells were investigated. It was found that a rather complicated multistep diffusion process could produce cells with significantly improved voltages. The voltage capabilities of various laboratory cells were compared independent of their absorption and collection efficiencies. This was accomplished by comparing the cells on the basis of their saturation currents or, equivalently, comparing their voltage outputs at a constant current-density level. The results show that for both the Lewis diffused emitter cell and the Spire ion-implanted emitter cell the base component of the saturation current is voltage controlling. The evidence for the University of Florida cells, although not very conclusive, suggests emitter control of the voltage in this device. The data suggest further that the critical voltage-limiting parameter for the Lewis cell is the electron mobility in the cell base.
