Arrival and departure impulsive Delta V determination for precessing Mars parking orbits

An attempt is made to develop a method for realistic estimation of the initial LEO mass. The method takes into account the actual geometry between the inbound and outbound hyperbolic asymptotes and the parking orbit, along with precession effects caused by the oblateness of Mars, in calculating the arrival and departure Delta V values. Three mission scenarios alternative to the arbitrarily assumed two tangential periapsis burns are described: a tangential periapsis arrival and an in-plane departure; an in-plane arrival and in-plane departure; and a tangential periapsis arrival and a 3D departure. Results obtained by the method under consideration compared well with a trajectory integration code, where the differences in the initial LEO orbit mass were within one percent, for all three cases. The method is considered to be an ideal tool for preliminary mission design, since it reduces the analysis computation time with minimal loss in accuracy.

Ion radial diffusion in an electrostatic impulse model for stormtime ring current formation

Two refinements to the quasi-linear theory of ion radial diffusion are proposed and examined analytically with simulations of particle trajectories. The resonance-broadening correction by Dungey (1965) is applied to the quasi-linear diffusion theory by Faelthammar (1965) for an individual model storm. Quasi-linear theory is then applied to the mean diffusion coefficients resulting from simulations of particle trajectories in 20 model storms. The correction for drift-resonance broadening results in quasi-linear diffusion coefficients with discrepancies from the corresponding simulated values that are reduced by a factor of about 3. Further reductions in the discrepancies are noted following the averaging of the quasi-linear diffusion coefficients, the simulated coefficients, and the resonance-broadened coefficients for the 20 storms. Quasi-linear theory provides good descriptions of particle transport for a single storm but performs even better in conjunction with the present ensemble-averaging.

Energetic-particle abundances in impulsive solar flares

The abundances of elements and of He-3 in 90 solar electron events have been examined. It is found that the events fall into two distinct groups based upon their F/C ratio. Events in the F-rich group frequently have high He-3/He-4 ratios and are associated with type III and type V radio bursts in the parent flare. The F-poor events are associated with type IV bursts. These results on individual events support the conclusions of earlier work done with daily-averaged abundances.

The morphology of 20 x 10 exp 6 K plasma in large non-impulsive solar flares

We have examined images of 10 flares observed by the Soft X-ray Telescope on-board the Yohkoh spacecraft. These images show that the hottest portion of the soft X-ray flare is located in compact regions that appear to be situated at the tops of loops. These compact regions form at, or shortly after, flare onset, and persist well into the decay phase of the flares. In some cases, the compact regions are only a few thousand kilometers in size and are small compared to the lengths of flaring loops. This is inconsistent with the smoother intensity distribution along the loops expected from models of chromospheric evaporation.

Impulse damping control of an experimental structure

The characteristics associated with the fuel optimal control of a harmonic oscillator are extended to develop a near minimum fuel control algorithm for the vibration suppression of spacecraft. The operation of single level thrusters is regulated by recursive calculations of the standard deviations of displacement and velocity resulting in a bang-off-bang controller. A vertically suspended 16 ft cantilevered beam was used in the experiment. Results show that the structure's response was easily manipulated by minor alterations in the control law and the control system performance was not seriously degraded in the presence of multiple actuator failures.

Development of a skin friction gauge for use in an impulse facility

Tests of a prototype skin friction gauge at Mach 3.2 in a small free piston shock tunnel demonstrate the effectiveness of the design concept and the calibration against theoretical skin friction values in a simple flow. The gauge has a rise time of about 20 microsec, sufficiently short for most shock tunnel applications and approaching the rise times needed for expansion tube applications.

An Impulse Electric Motor for Driving Recording Instruments

The chief purpose in undertaking the development of this synchronous motor was the creation of a very small, compact power source, capable of driving the film drums of the recording aircraft instruments designed by the staff of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
