The Effect of Blunt-Trailing-Edge Modifications on the High-Speed Stability and Control Characteristics of a Swept-Wing Fighter Airplane

An investigation was conducted on a 35 deg swept-wing fighter airplane to determine the effects of several blunt-trailing-edge modifications to the wing and tail on the high-speed stability and control characteristics and tracking performance. The results indicated significant improvement in the pitch-up characteristics for the blunt-aileron configuration at Mach numbers around 0.90. As a result of increased effectiveness of the blunt-trailing-edge aileron, the roll-off, customarily experienced with the unmodified airplane in wings-level flight between Mach numbers of about 0.9 and 1.0 was eliminated, The results also indicated that the increased effectiveness of the blunt aileron more than offset the large associated aileron hinge moment, resulting in significant improvement in the rolling performance at Mach numbers between 0.85 and 1.0. It appeared from these results that the tracking performance with the blunt-aileron configuration in the pitch-up and buffeting flight region at high Mach numbers was considerably improved over that of the unmodified airplane; however, the tracking errors of 8 to 15 mils were definitely unsatisfactory. A drag increment of about O.OOl5 due to the blunt ailerons was noted at Mach numbers to about 0.85. The drag increment was 0 at Mach numbers above 0.90.

Soldering iron temperature is automatically reduced

Hinged cradle-microswitch arrangement maintains a soldering iron at less than peak temperature when not in use. The microswitch introduces a voltage reducing element into the soldering iron power circuit when the iron is placed on the cradle. The iron, when removed from the cradle, returns to operating temperature in 15 to 30 seconds.

Magnetic latches provide positive overpressure control

Louvers are used for overpressure safety venting in rooms or chambers where explosion hazards exist. The louvers have individually hinged closures that are held in locked position by commercially available magnets that quickly release them in an overpressure condition.

Work platform is supported by self-locking blades

Work platform has a supporting plate to engage the deck edge of the supporting structure when lowered into place. The plate is attached to blades hinged to the platform, rigidly supporting the platform when latched, and allowing the platform to be moved away when unlatched.

Low friction servo valve

Valve was developed using air bearings which provide frictionless operation. The servo valve is of the flat plate type with rectangular meter openings. Fluid bearings support the metering plate. The overlap is adjustable by means of a variable hinge block support.

Detachable caster adapter

Detachable caster adapter moves heavy welding tables when fork lift trucks are not practical. A support saddle on the adapter, connected to the caster platform by means of a hinge, fits the leg of the welding table, but can be modified to fit other leg configurations.

Optical inspection tool for interior surfaces of fluid lines

Specialized tool enables visual inspection of interior bore surfaces of pipe lines having sharp bends and blind runs. Adjustable, hinged optical head permits viewing of bore surfaces at angles from 0 deg to 115 deg to the principal axis of the sight tube.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 45 Deg Swept Wing Fighter Airplane Model and Aerodynamic Loads on Adjacent Stores and Missiles at Mach Numbers of 1.57, 1.87, 2.16, and 2.53

An investigation was performed in the Langley Unitary Plan wind tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a model of a 45 deg swept-wing fighter airplane, and to determine the loads on attached stores and detached missiles in the presence of the model. Also included was a determination of aileron-spoiler effectiveness, aileron hinge moments, and the effects of wing modifications on model aerodynamic characteristics. Tests were performed at Mach numbers of 1.57, 1.87, 2.16, and 2.53. The Reynolds numbers for the tests, based on the mean aerodynamic chord of the wing, varied from about 0.9 x 10(exp 6) to 5 x 10(exp 6). The results are presented with minimum analysis.

Concepts for a theoretical and experimental study of lifting rotor random loads and vibrations. Phase 5C: Development of experimental methods

Test equipment which was built and the calibration tests are described. The test equipment consists of a two-bladed rotor of 16-in. diameter, the blades of which are elastically hinged in flapping. The feathering shaft of the blades can be harmonically rotated with the help of a cam mechanism located inside the hollow rotor shaft. The frequency range measured in the rotating system can be adjusted between 0 and 80 cps and the rotor speed between 0 and 40 cps. The test equipment is for measuring the flapping response of the blades to harmonic feathering excitation.
