Exploring the universality of hadronic jet classification

The modeling of jet substructure significantly differs between Parton Shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) programs. Despite this, we observe that machine learning classifiers trained on different PSMCs learn nearly the same function. This means that when these classifiers are applied to the same PSMC for testing, they result in nearly the same performance. This classifier universality indicates that a machine learning model trained on one simulation and tested on another simulation (or data) will likely be optimal. Our observations are based on detailed studies of shallow and deep neural networks applied to simulated Lorentz boosted Higgs jet tagging at the LHC.

Charged-hadron identification at Belle II

The Belle II experiment’s ability to identify particles critically affects the sensitivity of its measurements. We describe Belle II’s algorithms for identifying charged particles and evaluate their performance in separating pions, kaons, and protons using $426\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at the energy-asymmetric $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider SuperKEKB in 2019–2022 at center-of-mass energies at and near the mass of the $\Upsilon$ (4S).

Applying Quantum Tomography to Hadronic Interactions

A proper description of inclusive reactions is expressed with density matrices. Quantum tomography reconstructs density matrices from experimental observables. We review recent work that applies quantum tomography to practical experimental data analysis. Almost all field-theoretic formalism and modeling used in a traditional approach is circumvented with great efficiency. Tomographically-determined density matrices can express information about quantum systems which cannot in principle be expressed with distributions defined by classical probability. Topics such as entanglement and von Neumann entropy can be accessed using the same natural language where they are defined. A deep relation exists between separability, as defined in quantum information science, and factorization, as defined in high energy physics. Factorization acquires a non-perturbative definition when expressed in terms of a conditional form of separability. An example illustrates how to go from data for momentum 4-vectors to a density matrix while bypassing almost all the formalism of the Standard Model.

Updating Hadron Production Models to Better Predict Neutrino Flux for DUNE

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an ongoing project at Fermilab with international collaboration and over 190 institutions involved. DUNE has three primary science goals, one of which is searching for the origin of the imbalance of matter and antimatter in the universe. Accomplishing this goal will require the study of neutrinos and the phenomenon of neutrino oscillation.

Investigations of Baryon Spectroscopy via Electromagnetic and Hadronic Scattering (Final Report, May 1, 2019 to August 15, 2021)

The principal goal of this project is the experimental and phenomenological study of baryon spectroscopy. The P.I.’s group currently consists of himself and one student, Mr. Haoran Sun. Haoran’s project involves a new coupled-channel partial-wave analysis of all available world data for the reactions $K^0_Lp → K^0_Sp, K^+p → K^+p, K^+n → K^0p, K^0p → K^+n$, and $K^+n → K^+n$. The analysis of Mr. Sun is related to a conditionally approved proposal to develop a secondary $K^0_L$ beamline in Hall D at JLab, to be used with the GlueX setup. Mr. Sun’s analysis will establish some of the software codes necessary to analyze some of the data that could be measured at this facility. More importantly, the analysis will provide new experimental constraints on important background $\textit{KN}$ reactions, which are needed in order to help understand data that involve formation of Λ$^{\ast}$ and Σ$^{\ast}$ resonances.
