Electromagnetic fields due to dipole antennas over stratified anisotropic media.

Solutions to the problem of radiation of dipole antennas in the presence of a stratified anisotropic media are facilitated by decomposing a general wave field into transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes. Employing the propagation matrices, wave amplitudes in any region are related to those in any other regions. The reflection coefficients, which embed all the information about the geometrical configuration and the physical constituents of the medium, are obtained in closed form. In view of the general formulation, various special cases are discussed.

Microprogrammed digital filters for strapdown guidance application.

Discussion of an approach for implementing digital filters using microprogrammed control logic with read only memory (ROM) for strapdown guidance applications, and description of a second-order multiplexed system using multiprogrammed control instruction. The microprogramming technique for control using ROM is shown to enhance higher order digital filter realization. The high speed of digital circuits reduces propagation time and facilitates multiplexing. Programmed ROM's can be altered easily for different algorithms.

The Bennett ion-mass spectrometer on Atmosphere Explorer-C and -E.

The Bennett spectrometer to be flown on Atmosphere Explorer-C and -E (AE-C and AE-E) is designed to measure, throughout the 120 to 4000-km orbit, the concentrations of all thermal positive ions in the mass range 1 to 72 amu and number density range 5 to 5,000,000 ions per cu cm. To reduce the buildup of ram pressure and facilitate measurements at low altitude, the analyzer is vented, and a multigrid ion-current collector is employed. An extensive command capability permits optimization of instrument parameters for particular measurement objectives; commandable functions include mass-scan range and period, the sensitivity-resolution characteristic of the analyzer, orifice potential, and in-flight calibration.

Motivation in vigilance - A test of the goal-setting hypothesis of the effectiveness of knowledge of results.

This study tested the prediction, derived from the goal-setting hypothesis, that the facilitating effects of knowledge of results (KR) in a simple vigilance task should be related directly to the level of the performance standard used to regulate KR. Two groups of Ss received dichotomous KR in terms of whether Ss response times (RTs) to signal detections exceeded a high or low standard of performance. The aperiodic offset of a visual signal was the critical event for detection. The vigil was divided into a training phase followed by testing, during which KR was withdrawn. Knowledge of results enhanced performance in both phases. However, the two standards used to regulate feedback contributed little to these effects.

Interference patterns of a horizontal electric dipole over layered dielectric media.

Interference patterns for electromagnetic fields due to a subsurface reflector below a layered lossy dielectric are calculated with the geometrical optics approximation for use in interpreting data to be collected on the moon by Apollo 17 as well as data currently being obtained on terrestrial glaciers. The radiating antenna lies on the surface. All six field components are calculated and studied. For the endfire solutions, the peak of the first reflected wave is found to be different from that of the broadside ones. To facilitate a physical discussion, we plotted the radiation patterns due to the antenna on the surface.

A variable-data-rate, multimode quadriphase modem.

This paper describes the design and performance of a highly versatile modulator and demodulator recently developed to facilitate the evaluation of various digital communications links. The modem is capable of either PSK or QPSK operation and can accommodate a very wide range of continuously tunable data rates (1 kbps to 30 Mbps in each of two channels). In the QPSK mode, operation is possible using either a single serial data stream (single channel operation) or using two mutually independent, unrelated, and asynchronous data streams (dual-channel operation). Integrate and dump detectors are used at the demodulator for regeneration of the data stream(s). Measurements indicate that the performance of the overall system (including the bit detectors) is within 2 dB of the theoretically optimum performance of either PSK or QPSK at any rate within the range of rates provided by the modem, and is within 1 dB of theoretical over most of the range of rates.

Glycolytic intermediates and adenosine phosphates in rat liver at high altitude /3,800 m/.

Liver tissue obtained from adult rats exposed to 3800 m altitude for intervals ranging from 1.5 hr to 63 days was examined by enzymatic analysis. During the first 3 hr of exposure, an immediate decrease in rephosphorylation of high-energy phosphates led to reduced glycogenesis and eventual pileup of AMP, pyruvate, fructose 1,6-diphosphate, glucose 6-phosphate, and glucose. This was accompanied by a reduction of pentose phosphate pathway activity. After 3 to 6 hr, a secondary adjustment of substrate concentrations occurred along with the apparent facilitation of phosphofructokinase. This secondary adjustment appears to increase anaerobic production of ATP and represents a significant intracellular contribution to the acclimatization process at high altitude.

Reliability of cosmic dust data from Pioneers 8 and 9.

A comprehensive study of the characteristics and capabilities of the Pioneer cosmic dust mission is presented to facilitate accurate astronomical adaptations of the data by independent researchers. The characteristics of the sensor and associated electronics as they relate to dynamic range, field of view, and penetration effects in the film are discussed, comparisons are made between flight and simulation data, and statistical analyses are made of the reliability of the flight data. It is shown that the measurements from the Pioneer experiment are highly reliable and provide a valuable contribution to man's knowledge of the meteoroid environment of the solar system.

A comparison of Martian albedo features with topography.

Martian albedo features photographed from the earth are compared with the topography observed by Mariner 9. Three Lambert azimuthal equal-area charts prepared to facilitate the comparison are presented. No correlation between large-scale albedos and topography can be generalized, but several different kinds of relationships seem to be indicated in particular regions. Examples of these are discussed.

Design of various fixed-geometry water-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearings for maximum stability

This publication is the result of over 260 fractional-frequency-whirl stability tests on a variety of fixed-geometry journal bearings. It is intended principally as a guide in the selection and design of antiwhirl bearings that must operate at high speeds and low loads in low-viscosity fluids such as water or liquid metals. However, the various fixed-geometry configurations can be employed as well in applications where other lubricants, such as oil, are used and fractional-frequency whirl is a problem. The important parameters that effect stability are discussed for each bearing type, and design curves to facilitate the design of optimum-geometry bearings are included. A comparison of the stability of the different bearing configurations tested is also given.

Development of and dynamic studies concerning a cable boom system prototype

The conception of a cable boom system for a scientific spin stabilized satellite led to a flat cable stowed on a drum with a flexlead without conversion to avoid slip rings and to facilitate automatic restowage from any state of deployment. Some dynamic features of the extended cable boom and especially the comparison between round and flat cables were investigated in a phenomenological study using a test rig capable of inducing lateral, torsional and thermal cycling disturbances separately or in any combination.

Design and mathematical analysis of a three-mirror X-ray telescope based on ATM S-056 X-ray telescope hardware

The mathematical design of the aspheric third mirror for the three-mirror X-ray telescope (TMXRT) is presented, along with the imaging characteristics of the telescope obtained by a ray trace analysis. The present design effort has been directed entirely toward obtaining an aspheric third mirror which will be compatible with existing S-056 paraboloidal-hyperboloidal mirrors. This compatability will facilitate the construction of a prototype model of the TMXRT, since it will only be necessary to fabricate one new mirror in order to obtain a working model.
