Reducing the Cation Exchange Capacity of Lithium Clay to Form Better Dispersed Polymer-Clay Nanocomposites

Polymer-clay nanocomposites have exhibited superior strength and thermo- oxidative properties as compared to pure polymers for use in air and space craft; however, there has often been difficulty completely dispersing the clay within the matrices of the polymer. In order to improve this process, the cation exchange capacity of lithium clay is first lowered using twenty-four hour heat treatments of no heat, 130 C, 150 C, or 170 C to fixate the lithium ions within the clay layers so that they are unexchangeable. Generally, higher temperatures have generated lower cation exchange capacities. An ion exchange involving dodecylamine, octadecylamine, or dimethyl benzidine (DMBZ) is then employed to actually expand the clay galleries. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy can be used to determine whether the clay has been successfully exfoliated. Finally, resins of DMBZ with clay are then pressed into disks for characterization using dynamic mechanical analyzer and oven- aging techniques in order to evaluate their glass transition, modulus strength, and thermal-oxidative stability in comparison to neat DMBZ. In the future, they may also be tested as composites for flexural and laminar shear strength.

Applied-field magnetic structure and spectroscopy shifts of the effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ 𝑋⁢𝑌-like magnet Li 2 ⁢CoCl 4

Insulators containing chains of magnetic transition metal cations provide platforms for probing spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ dynamics and quantum critical behavior. Li 2 ⁢ CoCl 4 contains edge-sharing CoCl 6 octahedra that form chains along the crystallographic 𝑐 axis and orders antiferromagnetically at zero field, but questions remain about its applied-field magnetic structure and the Co 2+ spin state. Here, in this study, we show with neutron diffraction on a polycrystalline sample how the antialigned chains of cobalt moments begin to transition to a ferromagnetic state above 1.6 T. Further, using magnetic resonance absorption measurements and noninteracting spin models, we reveal the strongly anisotropic nature of the Co 2+ ion's 𝑋⁢𝑌-like magnetic behavior (𝑔 ∥ = 2.77 and 𝑔 ⊥ = 5.23) and its 𝐽 = $\frac{1}{2}$ ground state. We therefore supply the magnetic structures and anisotropic description needed to explore the dynamics of the field-driven magnetic phases, laying the foundation for further experimental and theoretical studies.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a grid-like Fe( II ) spin crossover dimer triggered by a two-photon excitation

The application of two-photon excitation (TPE) in the study of light-responsive materials holds immense potential due to its deeper penetration and reduced photodamage. Despite these benefits, TPE has been underutilised in the investigation of the photoinduced spin crossover (SCO) phenomenon. Here, we employ TPE to delve into the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a SCO Fe II dimer of the form [Fe II (HL) 2 ] 2 (BF 4 ) 4 ·2MeCN (HL = 3,5-bis{6-(2,2'-bipyridyl)}pyrazole). Optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy in solution proves that the same dynamics take place under both one-photon excitation (OPE) and TPE. The results show the emergence of the photoinduced high spin state in less than 2 ps and with a lifetime of 147 ns. Time-resolved photocrystallography (TRXRD) reveals a single molecular reorganisation within the first 500 ps following TPE. Additionally, variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (VTSCXRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm that the thermal transition is silenced by the solvent. While the results of the OTA and TRXRD utilising TPE are intriguing, the high pump fluencies required to excite enough metal centres to the high spin state may impair its practical application. Nonetheless, this study sheds light on the potential of TPE for the investigation of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of SCO complexes.

Analysis of strain in ion implanted 4H-SiC by fringes observed in synchrotron X-ray topography

A novel high energy implantation system has been successfully developed to fabricate 4H-SiC superjunction devices for medium and high voltage via implantation of dopant atoms with multi-energies ranging from 13 to 66 MeV. The significantly higher levels of energy used compared to conventional implantation processes, necessitates detailed characterization of the lattice damage caused by implantation. To achieve this by employing the novel high energy system, 4H-SiC wafer with 12 μm epilayers were blanket implanted by 13.8–65.7 MeV Al atoms. The lattice damages induced by the implantation were primarily characterized by Synchrotron X-ray Plane Wave Topography (SXPWT) and Reciprocal Space Mapping (RSM). Topographs reveal fringe contrast akin to multiple asymmetric diffraction peaks with an angular separation of only 2″ (arcseconds) observed on rocking curves, indicating inhomogeneous strain distribution across the implanted layer. The strain profile of the implanted layer was extracted from the fringe contrast by applying Rocking-curve Analysis by Dynamical Simulation (RADS). In conclusion, the maximum strain value is similar to that measured on the RSM.

High‐Entropy Lithium Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes Enabling Stable All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Superionic solid electrolytes (SEs) are essential for bulk‐type solid‐state battery (SSB) applications. Multicomponent SEs are recently attracting attention for their favorable charge‐transport properties, however a thorough understanding of how configurational entropy (ΔS conf ) affects ionic conductivity is lacking. Here, we successfully synthesized a series of halogen‐rich lithium argyrodites with the general formula Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl x Br 1.5‐x (0≤x≤1.5). Using neutron powder diffraction and 31 P magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the S 2− /Cl − /Br − occupancy on the anion sublattice was quantitatively analyzed. We show that disorder positively affects Li‐ion dynamics, leading to a room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 22.7 mS cm −1 (9.6 mS cm −1 in cold‐pressed state) for Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 (ΔS conf =1.98R). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence that configurational entropy of the anion sublattice correlates with ion mobility. Our results indicate the possibility of improving ionic conductivity in ceramic ion conductors by tailoring the degree of compositional complexity. Moreover, the Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 SE allowed for stable cycling of single‐crystal LiNi 0.9 Co 0.06 Mn 0.04 O 2 (s‐NCM90) composite cathodes in SSB cells, emphasizing that dual‐substituted lithium argyrodites hold great promise in enabling high‐performance electrochemical energy storage.

Charge correlations and magnetoelastic coupling in intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides

The large van der Waals gap in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offers an avenue to tune the ground state of 2D materials through the intercalation of magnetic atoms. Here, we investigate the charge correlations in Fe 1/3 ⁢TaS 2 , Co 1/3 ⁢TaS 2 , and Fe 0.35 ⁢NbS 2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray scattering, magnetometry, and density functional theory (DFT). We find that, while short-range charge fluctuations develop in Ta-based compounds, Fe 0.35 ⁢NbS 2 exhibits long-range charge order which is strongly coupled with magnetic order and tunable by external magnetic field. Our electronic structure analysis reveals that intercalation reconstructs the Fermi surface via charge transfer and band renormalization, yet does not generate the nesting conditions compatible with the observed ordering vectors. Complementary phonon calculations further exclude a conventional electron-phonon origin of charge order. Together, these results establish magnetoelastic coupling as the dominant mechanism behind charge ordering in Fe 0.35 ⁢NbS 2 and highlight the contrasting role of Nb and Ta hosts in stabilizing correlated ground states in intercalated TMDs.

Thermal properties of the metallic delafossite PdCo⁢O 2 : A combined experimental and first-principles study

Metallic delafossite materials (e.g., PdCo⁢O 2 , PtCo⁢O 2 ), have attracted much recent attention due to record-high oxide conductivities, the origins of which remain unclear. Relatively little attention has been paid to their related thermal properties, however. Here, we address this via wide temperature range experimental studies of the crystal structure, thermal expansion, and specific heat of single-crystal PdCo⁢O 2 , combined with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic and phononic densities of states, and thus thermal properties. PdCo⁢O 2 is shown to retain the $R\bar{3}m$ space group from 12 to 1000 K, exhibiting a- and c-axis thermal expansion in good quantitative agreement with DFT-based lattice dynamics calculations. The Co-O bond lengths additionally elucidate the stability of the low-spin state of the nominally Co 3+ ions, which is a notable difference between the edge-shared Co-O octahedra in PdCo⁢O 2 and the corner-shared octahedra in Co-based perovskites. Measurements of specific heat from 1.9 to 400 K provide accurate values for the Debye temperature and Sommerfeld coefficient, the phononic part being describable via a combined Debye-Einstein approach (accounting for high-frequency oxygen-related optical phonons), with excess intermediate-temperature specific heat due to a prominent low-energy peak in the phonon density of states. Most significantly, all electronic and phononic contributions to the specific heat are shown to be remarkably closely reproduced by DFT-based calculations, establishing quantitative understanding of key thermal properties of the metallic delafossite PdCo⁢O 2 .

Structural response of α-quartz under plate-impact shock compression

Because of its far-reaching applications in geophysics and materials science, quartz has been one of the most extensively examined materials under dynamic compression. Despite 50 years of active research, questions remain concerning the structure and transformation of SiO 2 under shock compression. Continuum gas-gun studies have established that under shock loading quartz transforms through an assumed mixed-phase region to a dense high-pressure phase. While it has often been assumed that this high-pressure phase corresponds to the stishovite structure observed in static experiments, there have been no crystal structure data confirming this. In this study, we use gas-gun shock compression coupled with in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction to interrogate the crystal structure of shock-compressed α-quartz up to 65 GPa. Our results reveal that α-quartz undergoes a phase transformation to a disordered metastable phase as opposed to crystalline stishovite or an amorphous structure, challenging long-standing assumptions about the dynamic response of this fundamental material.

Light-Induced Transient Lattice Dynamics and Metastable Phase Transition in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Nanocrystals

In this study, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) offer desirable optoelectronic properties with prospective utility in photovoltaics, lasers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Structural rearrange-ments of MAPbI 3 in response to photoexcitation, such as lattice distortions and phase transitions, are of particular interest, as these engender long carrier lifetime and bolster carrier diffusion. Here, we use variable temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based transient X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to investigate lattice response following ultrafast optical excitation. MAPbI 3 NCs are found to slowly undergo a phase transition from the tetragonal to a pseudocubic phase over the course of 1 ns under 0.02-4.18 mJ/cm 2 fluence photoexcitation, with apparent nonthermal lattice distortions attributed to polaron formation. Lattice recovery exceeds time scales expected for both carrier recombination and thermal dissipation, indicating meta-stability likely due to the proximal phase transition, with symmetry-breaking along equatorial and axial directions. These findings are relevant for fundamental understanding and applications of structure-function properties.

Fast dynamic aperture optimization with forward-reversal integration

A fast dynamic aperture (DA) optimization method for storage rings has been developed through the use of reversal integration. Even if dynamical systems have an exact reversal symmetry, a numerical forward integration differs from its reversal. For a chaotic trajectory, cumulative round-off errors are scaled, which results in an exponential growth on the difference. The exponential effect is a generic chaos indicator which represents the sensitivity of the chaotic motion to its initial condition. The chaos indicator of the charged particle motion can be obtained by comparing the forward integrations of particle trajectories with corresponding reversals, a.k.a. “backward integrations.” The indicator is observable even through short-term particle tracking simulations. Therefore, adopting it as an objective function could speed up optimization. Finally, the DA of the National Synchrotron Light Source II storage ring, and another test diffraction-limited light source ring, were optimized using this method for the purpose of demonstration.

Understanding Instability in Formamidinium Lead Halide Perovskites: Kinetics of Transformative Reactions at Grain and Subgrain Boundaries

Transformative and reconstructive reactions impart significant structural changes at particle boundaries of hybrid perovskites, which influence environmental stability and optoelectronic properties of these materials. Here, we investigate the moisture-induced transformative reactions in formamidinium based perovskites FAPbX 3 (X=I, Br) and show that the ambient stability of these materials can be adjusted from a few hours to several months. For FAPbI 3 , roles of water vapor, particle size, and light illumination on the kinetic pathways of the cubic (a) transformation to the hexagonal (d) phase are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, photoluminescence and solid-state NMR spectroscopy techniques. The grain and sub-grain boundaries exhibit different α→δ-FAPbI 3 phase transformation kinetics. Our study suggests that the dynamic transformation involves the local water-induced dissolution of the cubic phase occurring at the crystal surfaces followed by precipitation of the hexagonal phase. Insights into structures and dynamics of a kinetically trapped α-|δ-FAPbI 3 are obtained by 1 H, 2 H, and 207 Pb ssNMR spectroscopy.

Surface oxygenation of multicomponent nanoparticles toward active and stable oxidation catalysts

Abstract The need for active and stable oxidation catalysts is driven by the demands in production of valuable chemicals, remediation of hydrocarbon pollutants and energy sustainability. Traditional approaches focus on oxygen-activating oxides as support which provides the oxygen activation at the catalyst-support peripheral interface. Here we report a new approach to oxidation catalysts for total oxidation of hydrocarbons (e.g., propane) by surface oxygenation of platinum (Pt)-alloyed multicomponent nanoparticles (e.g., platinum-nickel cobalt (Pt–NiCo)). The in-situ/operando time-resolved studies, including high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, demonstrate the formation of oxygenated Pt–NiOCoO surface layer and disordered ternary alloy core. The results reveal largely-irregular oscillatory kinetics associated with the dynamic lattice expansion/shrinking, ordering/disordering, and formation of surface-oxygenated sites and intermediates. The catalytic synergy is responsible for reduction of the oxidation temperature by ~100 °C and the high stability under 800 °C hydrothermal aging in comparison with Pt, and may represent a paradigm shift in the design of self-supported catalysts.

Multiple origins of extra electron diffractions in fcc metals

Diffuse intensities in the electron diffraction patterns of concentrated face-centered cubic solid solutions have been widely attributed to chemical short-range order, although this connection has been recently questioned. This article explores the many nonordering origins of commonly reported features using a combination of experimental electron microscopy and multislice diffraction simulations, which suggest that diffuse intensities largely represent thermal and static displacement scattering. A number of observations may reflect additional contributions from planar defects, surface terminations incommensurate with bulk periodicity, or weaker dynamical effects.

On the Crystal Structure of Colloidally Prepared Metastable Ag2Se Nanocrystals

Structural polymorphism is known for many bulk materials; however, on the nanoscale metastable polymorphs tend to form more readily than in the bulk, and with more structural variety. One such metastable polymorph observed for colloidal Ag2Se nanocrystals has traditionally been referred to as the “tetragonal” phase of Ag2Se. While there are reports on the chemistry and properties of this metastable polymorph, its crystal structure, and therefore electronic structure, has yet to be determined. We report that an anti-PbCl2-like structure type (space group P21/n) accurately describes the powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray total scattering patterns of colloidal Ag2Se nanocrystals prepared by several different methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the anti-PbCl2-like Ag2Se polymorph is a dynamically stable, narrow-band gap semiconductor. DFT results reveal a dense theoretical Ag2Se phase space with many low-energy polymorphs, which helps explain the large number of polymorphs reported in the literature. Analysis and calculation data are stored in the zip archive. The `ag2se-calcs.aiida.` contains the provenance of the calculations and can be imported into an AiiDA database instance. The antiPbCl2like_Ag2Se_laboratory.cif file is the Reitveld refined Ag2Se structure starting from the PbCl2 structure.

Structural features of solid-solid phase transitions and lattice dynamics in U 3 O 8

Triuranium octoxide (U 3 O 8 ) undergoes an orthorhombic to hexagonal structural phase transition near Ts=305°C, and a separate nonstructural phase transition at Tc=210°C. The later transition has previously been associated with temperature-induced fluctuations in the uranium oxidation state. A discontinuity in the slope of electrical conductivity versus temperature measurement at 210°C has supported this idea. The orthorhombic phase has three crystallographic sites in two distinct oxidation configurations [2 U(V) and 1 U(VI)], whereas the hexagonal phase has one distinct uranium site. High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements eliminate the possibility of superlattice Bragg reflections to less than 0.2 e - scattering power and U 3 O 8 is not metallic; consequently, the presence of oxidation fluctuations is required for charge balancing. Interestingly, the order-to-disorder transition occurs at a much lower temperature than the structural transition. Using temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we show anisotropic lattice expansion in the in-plane b and c lattice constants. A specific discontinuity in the temperature derivatives of the b and c lattice constants are the first reported structural signatures of the order-to-disorder transition, suggestive of a change in local U–O coordination. Phonon frequencies of U 3 O 8 measured by Raman spectroscopy show significant temperature-dependent dynamics. Redshifting of several modes between 40 and 300°C cannot be explained by unit cell expansion alone because the unit cell volume decreases in this region. Instead, we show that phonon frequencies are highly correlated with the anisotropic lattice expansion/contraction along specific crystallographic directions.

Atomic resolution convergent beam electron diffraction analysis using convolutional neural networks

Two types of convolutional neural network (CNN) models, a discrete classification network and a continuous regression network, were trained to determine local sample thickness from convergent beam diffraction (CBED) patterns of SrTiO 3 collected in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) at atomic column resolution. Acquisition of atomic resolution CBED patterns for this purpose requires careful balancing of CBED feature size in pixels, acquisition speed, and detector dynamic range. The training datasets were derived from multislice simulations, which must be convolved with incoherent source broadening. Sample thicknesses were also determined using quantitative high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) STEM images acquired simultaneously. The regression CNN performed well on sample thinner than 35 nm, with 70% of the CNN results within 1 nm of HAADF thickness, and 1.0 nm overall root mean square error between the two measurements. The classification CNN was trained for a thicknesses up to 100 nm and yielded 66% of CNN results within one classification increment of 2 nm of HAADF thickness. Our approach depends on methods from computer vision including transfer learning and image augmentation.

High Ammonia Adsorption in MFM-300 Materials: Dynamics and Charge Transfer in Host–Guest Binding

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is a promising energy resource owing to its high hydrogen density. However, its widespread application is restricted by the lack of efficient and corrosion-resistant storage materials. In this work, we report high NH 3 adsorption in a series of robust metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, MFM-300(M) (M = Fe, V, Cr, In). MFM-300(M) (M = Fe, V III , Cr) show fully reversible capacity for >20 cycles, reaching capacities of 16.1, 15.6, and 14.0 mmol g -1 , respectively, at 273 K and 1 bar. Under the same conditions, MFM-300(V IV ) exhibits the highest uptake among this series of MOFs of 17.3 mmol g -1 . In situ neutron powder diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirm that the redox-active V center enables host-guest charge transfer, with V IV being reduced to V III and NH 3 being oxidized to hydrazine (N 2 H 4 ). A combination of in situ inelastic neutron scattering and DFT modeling has revealed the binding dynamics of adsorbed NH 3 within these MOFs to afford a comprehensive insight into the application of MOF materials to the adsorption and conversion of NH 3 .

Time-Resolved X-ray Operando Observations of Lithiation Gradients across the Cathode Matrix and Individual Oxide Particles during Fast Cycling of a Li-Ion Cell

Lithiated transition metal oxides serve as active materials in the positive electrode (cathode) of lithium-ion cells. During electrochemical cycling, lithium ions intercalate and deintercalate into these oxide particles. This behavior causes two types of lithiation gradients to emerge: (i) a bulk gradient across the depth of the cathode matrix (averaged over individual oxide particles) and (ii) a microscopic gradient across the particles themselves, which also depends on their location in the electrode. Here we show how both gradients can be studied using operando X-ray diffraction during 4C charge and 4C discharge. The oxide (de)lithiation is estimated from the unit cell parameters by indexing the X-ray diffraction spectra. By fitting the lithiation profiles with orthogonal polynomials, the bulk gradients across the electrode thickness are quantified. These gradients develop as the current flows through the cell and dissipate during open-circuit and potentiostatic-hold periods. Further details of lithiation dynamics can be obtained through shape analysis of the Bragg peaks. In particular, from electrochemical model simulations, we show that the width and skewness of the (003) peak track (de)lithiation fronts moving across the individual oxide particles.
