Tracking and Orbit-Determination Program of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory

The lunar-probe tracking program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has two prime objectives: (1) provide real-time predictions of the direction of the probe from various observation stations; (2) establish a reliable trajectory corresponding to the actual flight path of the probe. The tracking program, although developed for use with lunar probes, can be used for interplanetary probes if certain modifications are made. The program, as developed for the IBM 704 digital computer, has two distinct phases. First, the equations of motion and the variational equations are integrated to each observation time where the elements of the equation A (sub u) equals b [linearization of the maximum likelihood equations] are computed. The second phase is concerned with the solution of a specified subset of A (sub u) equals b. Flexibility and ease of operation have been major objectives in writing the 704 program. The number of data points and tracking stations that may be used is limited only by computing time and core storage. Input formats and operating instructions are presented for utilizing the various computational options available in the program.

Logic redundancy improves digital system reliability

Redundant-channel system automatically corrects any single error in a set of three binary signal channels. This system is especially applicable to digital computers where data is transmitted in parallel channels.

Auxiliary circuit enables automatic monitoring of EKG'S

Auxiliary circuits allow direct, automatic monitoring of electrocardiograms by digital computers. One noiseless square-wave output signal for each trigger pulse from an electrocardiogram preamplifier is produced. The circuit also permits automatic processing of cardiovascular data from analog tapes.

Calculated blade response at high tip-speed ratios

This paper presents the initial results of a digital computer study of helicopter rotor-blade-motion stability for a broad range of forward speeds encompassing proposed conventional and compound helicopter designs. The analysis treats the general case of nonlinear, coupled flapping and lagging motions of hinged rigid blades. The results of the study to date indicate that blade-motion stability boundaries cannot be specified for a given blade design in terms of a fixed value of rotor tip-speed ratio. The stability boundaries can shift significantly within the desired operational speed range, with the stability limits depending upon the rotor loading, the magnitude of the disturbance encountered by the blade, and the blade position at the instant the external disturbance is encountered. The sample methods suggested for improving blade-motion stability include increasing the effective hinge spring restraint by incorporating pitch-flap coupling or by using hingeless or teetering rotor systems. Reducing rotor loading also has a beneficial effect on the blade-motion stability. The results indicate that methods used to deal with the blade-motion stability problem can be expected to diminish the overall vibration levels of the helicopter rotor system across the entire design speed range.
