Photo-zSNthesis: Converting Type Ia Supernova Lightcurves to Redshift Estimates via Deep Learning

Abstract Upcoming photometric surveys will discover tens of thousands of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), vastly outpacing the capacity of our spectroscopic resources. In order to maximize the scientific return of these observations in the absence of spectroscopic information, we must accurately extract key parameters, such as SN redshifts, with photometric information alone. We present Photo- z SNthesis, a convolutional neural network-based method for predicting full redshift probability distributions from multi-band supernova lightcurves, tested on both simulated Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Vera C. Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time data as well as observed SDSS SNe. We show major improvements over predictions from existing methods on both simulations and real observations as well as minimal redshift-dependent bias, which is a challenge due to selection effects, e.g., Malmquist bias. Specifically, we show a 61× improvement in prediction bias 〈Δ z 〉 on PLAsTiCC simulations and 5× improvement on real SDSS data compared to results from a widely used photometric redshift estimator, LCFIT+Z. The PDFs produced by this method are well constrained and will maximize the cosmological constraining power of photometric SNe Ia samples.

Power at Sea: Use of Wave Energy Converters for Powering Offshore Oil and Gas Operations

New innovative services and goods based on artificial intelligence, next-generation robotics, autonomy, digitization, and electrification are taking root in the ocean economy. More typical competitive forces, such as value enhancement and safety improvement, are also present, as suppliers constantly strive to improve their competitive positioning. Concurrently, the Oil and Gas sector is experiencing mounting pressure to decrease its operational carbon emissions, forcing efforts to reduce or eliminate liquid fuel consumption offshore. Companies in the ocean economy are having to react to this combination of macro- and micro-level drivers and innovate at an ever more rapid pace. However, before many of these new capabilities can be implemented, new, clean, reliable power sources are needed, especially as liquid fuel grows increasingly out of favor. For many of these loads—both old and new and ranging from watts to megawatts—wave energy systems provide the best solution for remote power generation. As such, research, development and demonstration activities are underway to prove wave energy's ability to provide reliable, consistent energy supplies for certain offshore Oil and Gas activities, paving the way for near term commercialization. Furthermore, this paper outlines these drivers, competitive reaction to them, and why and how wave energy can be a preferable choice for power at sea.

Catalytic converters having non-linear flow channels

Disclosed is a honeycomb catalyst substrate core having geometrically non-linear flow channels. In an embodiment, the honeycomb catalyst substrate core includes helical flow channels. In another embodiment, the honeycomb catalyst substrate core includes sinusoidal flow channels. In yet another embodiment, the honeycomb catalyst substrate core includes helical plus sinusoidal flow channels. The honeycomb catalyst substrate core comprises a plurality of parallel non-linear flow channels formed along a longitudinal axis of symmetry of the catalyst substrate core, each non-linear flow channel configured such that a turbulent vortical flow occurs during engine exhaust gas flow. Also disclosed is a method for manufacturing a ceramic honeycomb having non-linear flow channels, comprising the steps extrusion soft ceramic material through a die whilst the die moves through six degrees of freedom along its axis of symmetry. Disclosure includes a method for manufacturing a ceramic honeycomb having non-linear flow channels using three-dimensional printing.

Method of converting ethanol to higher alcohols

A method and catalyst for forming higher alcohols from lower alcohol feedstocks. In one application a highly selective and stable copper pseudo-single-atom supported on MgO—Al2O3 catalyst is provided which provides ethanol condensation to higher alcohols at ˜50% yields and ˜85% selectivity is demonstrated with stable catalyst lifetime over 500 hours in a continuous flow system. In some applications a Guerbet condensation process is further utilized to yield a higher alcohol at a selectivity of near ˜90%.
