Attenuation of X rays in interstellar space.

Calculation of the X-ray interaction cross sections for three cosmic mixtures over the range from 1 keV (12.4 A) to 1.5 MeV (0.008 A). The cosmic composition of elements as given by Aller and utilized by Bell and Kingston (1967) and the total photon interaction cross sections per atom of the elements as computed by Hubbell and collaborators are used for this purpose. The results are compared with a formula given by Heiles (1971). Approximate agreement exists between 10 to 20 keV.

Star sensor/mapper with a self deployable, high-attenuation light shade for SAS-B

A star sensor/mapper to determine positional data for the small astronomy satellites was tested to detect stars of plus 4 visual magnitude. It utilizes two information channels with memory so that it can be used with a low-data-rate telemetry system. One channel yields star amplitude information; the other yields the time of star occurrence as the star passes across an N-slit reticle/photomultiplier detector system. Some of the features of the star sensor/mapper are its low weight of 6.5 pounds, low power consumption of 0.4 watt, bandwidth switching to match the satellite spin rate, optical equalization of sensitivity over the 5-by-10 deg field of view, and self-deployable sunshade. The attitude determination accuracy is 3 arc minutes. This is determined by such parameters as the reticle configuration, optical train, and telemetry readout. The optical and electronic design of the star sensor/mapper, its expansion capabilities, and its features are discussed.

Compton scatter attenuation gamma ray spectrometer

A gamma ray spectrometer is described for use in intense radiation fields such as those in the vicinity of a rocket engine exhaust. A collimated radiation beam is Compton scattered toward shielded spectrometers to reduce the energy and intensity of the radiation and is energy selective among the spectrometers. The scattering targets are changeable to control the percentage of the radiation scattered. Sum-Compton coincidence techniques are employed for data selection.

Flight tests of vortex-attenuating splines

Visual data on formation and motion of lift-induced wingtip vortex were obtained by stationary, airflow visualization method. Visual data indicated that vortex cannot be eliminated by merely reshaping wingtip. Configuration change will likely have only small effect on far-field flow.

Lift-induced wing-tip vortex attenuation

It has been shown by a new static airflow visualization method that a drogue device properly positioned downstream of the wing tip causes vortex breakdown. This same result has been obtained by mounting a jet engine simulator at the wing tip and directing the high-energy jet blast downstream into the vortex. These configurations, among others, are now under intensive investigation in the new Langley Vortex Research Facility. In this facility a balance mounted vortex generating model is propelled along the 1800-foot track while a second model trailed at 160 feet (scale distance of 1 mile) measures the far-field rolling moment induced by the vortex of the generating model.
