Study and simulation results for video landmark acquisition and tracking technology (Vilat-2)

The results of several investigations and hardware developments which supported new technology for Earth feature recognition and classification are described. Data analysis techniques and procedures were developed for processing the Feature Identification and Location Experiment (FILE) data. This experiment was flown in November 1981, on the second Shuttle flight and a second instrument, designed for aircraft flights, was flown over the United States in 1981. Ground tests were performed to provide the basis for designing a more advanced version (four spectral bands) of the FILE which would be capable of classifying clouds and snow (and possibly ice) as distinct features, in addition to the features classified in the Shuttle experiment (two spectral bands). The Shuttle instrument classifies water, bare land, vegetation, and clouds/snow/ice (grouped).

Enhanced character sizes for the VDM-1 video display board

Use of a microprocessor for providing navigation information from the inherent hyperbolic geometries of Loran-C was discussed. The advantages Loran-C offers over VOR/DME as a primary navigation aid are identified. These advantages include long range coverage by several stations, coverage at low altitudes, and the capability to have nonprecision approaches at airports not already served by landing aids. Modern digital electronic technology is used to produce a device to convert Loran-C data to useful pilot information using simple software algorithms and low cost microprocessor devices. The cost and lack of availability of suitable processors to execute these algorithms have prevented a Loran-C navigator from being developed. Results indicate that the microprocessor based Loran-C navigator has an accuracy of 1.0 nm or less over an area typically covered by a triad of Loran-C stations and can execute a position update in less than 0.2 seconds.

Development of an autonomous video rendezvous and docking system, phase 3

Field-of-view limitations proved troublesome. Higher resolution was required. Side thrusters were too weak. The strategy logic was improved and the Kalman filter was augmented to estimate target attitude and tumble rate. Two separate filters were used. The new filter estimates target attitude and angular momentum. The Newton-Raphson iteration improves image interpretation.

A hardware/software simulation for the video tracking system of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory telescope

This simulator was created so that C-141 Kuiper Airborne Observatory investigators could test their Airborne Data Acquisition and Management System software on a system which is generally more accessible than the ADAMS on the plane. An investigator can currently test most of his data acquisition program using the data computer simulator in the Cave. (The Cave refers to the ground-based computer facilities for the KAO and the associated support personnel.) The main Cave computer is interfaced to the data computer simulator in order to simulate the data-Exec computer communications. However until now, there has been no way to test the data computer interface to the tracker. The simulator described here simulates both the KAO Exec and tracker computers with software which runs on the same Hewlett-Packard (HP) computer as the investigator's data acquisition program. A simulator control box is hardwired to the computer to provide monitoring of tracker functions, to provide an operator panel similar to the real tracker, and to simulate the 180 deg phase shifting of the chopper squre-wave reference with beam switching. If run in the Cave, one can use their Exec simulator and this tracker simulator.

Wide-Brightness-Range Video Camera

Television camera selectively attenuates bright areas in scene without affecting dim areas. Camera views scenes containing extremes of light and dark without overexposing light areas and underexposing dark ones. Camera uses liquid-crystal light valve for selective attenuation. Feedback cathoderay tube locally alters reflection characteristics of liquid-crystal light valve. Results in point-to-point optoelectronic automatic gain control to enable viewing of both dark and very bright areas within scene.

The San Fernando Observatory video Stokes polarimeter

A study was conducted to determine the suitability of the San Fernando Observatory's 61 cm (24 inch) aperture vacuum solar telescope and 3 m (118 inch) focal length vacuum spectroheliograph for Stokes Polarimetry measurements. The polarization characteristics of these two instruments was measured by determining their Mueller matrices as a function of telescope orientation, field angle, wavelength, grating type, and position of the measuring beam in the telescope entrance window. In general, the polarizing and depolarizing properties are small so that inversion of the system Mueller matrix will permit the accurate measurement of Stokes profiles for vector magnetic field determination. A proposed polarimeter design based on the use of a TV camera system to simultaneously scan six different polarization components of a given line profile is described. This design, which uses no rotating optics or electronic modulators and makes efficient use of the available irradiance, promises to yield high quality vector magnetograms.

Video Processor for Transponder Pulses

Circuit detects interrogation signals from air-traffic-control station and determines whether transponder of airplane should respond. Circuit examines relative magnitudes of first two pulses in three-pulse sequence of interrogation signal. On basis of relative magnitudes, circuit decides whether main lobe of interrogating radar beam is received (response should be generated) or only side lobe received (and interrogation ignored). Circuit simple and inexpensive.

Aircrew coordination and decisionmaking: Peer ratings of video tapes made during a full mission simulation

Six professionally active, retired captains rated the coordination and decisionmaking performances of sixteen aircrews while viewing videotapes of a simulated commercial air transport operation. The scenario featured a required diversion and a probable minimum fuel situation. Seven point Likert-type scales were used in rating variables on the basis of a model of crew coordination and decisionmaking. The variables were based on concepts of, for example, decision difficulty, efficiency, and outcome quality; and leader-subordin ate concepts such as person and task-oriented leader behavior, and competency motivation of subordinate crewmembers. Five-front-end variables of the model were in turn dependent variables for a hierarchical regression procedure. The variance in safety performance was explained 46%, by decision efficiency, command reversal, and decision quality. The variance of decision quality, an alternative substantive dependent variable to safety performance, was explained 60% by decision efficiency and the captain's quality of within-crew communications. The variance of decision efficiency, crew coordination, and command reversal were in turn explained 78%, 80%, and 60% by small numbers of preceding independent variables. A principle component, varimax factor analysis supported the model structure suggested by regression analyses.

Real time pipelined system for forming the sum of products in the processing of video data

A 3-by-3 convolver utilizes 9 binary arithmetic units connected in cascade for multiplying 12-bit binary pixel values P sub i which are positive or two's complement binary numbers by 5-bit magnitide (plus sign) weights W sub i which may be positive or negative. The weights are stored in registers including the sign bits. For a negative weight, the one's complement of the pixel value to be multiplied is formed at each unit by a bank of 17 exclusive or gates G sub i under control of the sign of the corresponding weight W sub i, and a correction is made by adding the sum of the absolute values of all the negative weights for each 3-by-3 kernel. Since this correction value remains constant as long as the weights are constant, it can be precomputed and stored in a register as a value to be added to the product PW of the first arithmetic unit.

Microwave and video sensor fusion for the shape extraction of 3D space objects

A new system for the fusion of optical image data and polarized radar scattering cross-sections is presented. By considering the scattering data in conjunction with image data, the problem of ambiguity can be reduced. Only a small part of the surface needs to be reconstructed from the radar cross-sections; the remaining portion is constrained by the optical image.

Video image selection studies of granules, pores, and penumbral flows near a large sunspot

The results of applying modern ground-based optical techniques using data obtained from high-resolution videotapes to the study of solar granulation are addressed. The average lifetime of granules is found to be 16 min, with larger granules having longer lifetimes. Two percent of granules explode, and the probability of a granule being hit by exploding granules at least once is 10 percent. A big exploding event covers about 10 granules. Many small pores change their size and darkness in less than a time scale of 60 min. The integrated darkness of one pore appears to be oscillating with a period of about 30 min. There are clear inflows of both bright and dark penumbra fibrils toward the umbra, from the outer edge of the penumbra. Outflow from the outer edge of penumbra is confirmed. This flow pattern may be related to the moving magnetic features and the moat structure surrounding the sunspots.

A video atlas of TOMS ozone data, 1978-88

The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), on-board NASA's Nimbus-7 weather satellite, has been observing ozone over the earth once daily for the last 10 yr. A time-lapse atlas of 3440 color-coded images drawn from the TOMS archive from 1978 to 1988 has been visualized on a standard VHS videotape that is now available from NASA. The rapid and complex ozone variations presented demonstrate the difficulty of separating man-induced climate changes from natural variability. This article presents a few images from the atlas and describes interesting features in the animation, such as the correlation between ozone and 'the weather', and the recent deepening of the annual ozone hole over the South Pole. Originally intended as a browsing tool for the TOMS digital database, the videotape is a vivid presentation of the earth's atmospheric dynamics and chemistry that is recommended for scientists, educators, policy makers, and citizens concerned about the global environment.

PC-compatible computer-generated stimuli for video-task testing

A program for automatic computer generation of novel nonverbal stimuli is described. The program, STIMGEN, allows menu-driven control over the type and appearance of stimuli. Data are presented in which two monkeys matched to sample with high accuracy using stimuli generated with STIMGEN. These data are interpreted to support the usefulness and value of automatic stimulus generation in a variety of applications.

Application of visual psychophysics to the design of video systems for use in space

A series of two-alternative forced choice experiments was conducted to compare the sharpness of televised moving images sampled using cardinal or diagonal patterns with reference images of varying resolution. The results indicate that both image sampling and resolution orientation play an important role in determining apparent sharpness of the images. If an image has better cardinal than diagonal resolution, the apparent sharpness is significantly greater. Thus, if the polar distribution of resolution is limited by the sampling process, diagonal sampling can be expected to yield a sharper image than cardinal sampling with the same number of pixels.
