Intrinsic nature of chiral charge order in the kagome superconductor Rb V 3 Sb 5

Superconductors with kagome lattices have been identified for over 40 years, with a superconducting transition temperature T c up to 7 K. Recently, certain kagome superconductors have been found to exhibit an exotic charge order, which intertwines with superconductivity and persists to a temperature being one order of magnitude higher than T c . Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the charge order in kagome superconductor Rb V 3 Sb 5 . We observe both a 2×2 chiral charge order and nematic surface superlattices (predominantly 1×4). We find that the 2×2 charge order exhibits intrinsic chirality with magnetic field tunability. Defects can scatter electrons to introduce standing waves, which couple with the charge order to cause extrinsic effects. While the chiral charge order resembles that discovered in KV 3 Sb 5 , it further interacts with the nematic surface superlattices that are absent in KV 3 Sb 5 but exist in CsV 3 Sb 5 .

Magnetic photocurrents in multifold Weyl fermions

Here, we examine the magneto-optical response of chiral multifold fermions. Specifically, we show that they are ideal candidates for observing the helical magnetic effect (HME) previously predicted for simple Weyl fermions. Unlike Weyl fermions, the HME is present in multifold fermions even in the simplest case where the low-energy dispersion is linear and spherically symmetric. In this ideal case, we derive an analytical expression for the HME and find it is proportional to the circular photogalvanic effect; for realistic parameters and accounting for the geometry of the setup, the HME photocurrent could be roughly the same order of magnitude as the circular photogalvanic effect observed in multifold fermions. Additional nonlinear and symmetry-breaking terms will ruin the quantization but not hurt the observation of the HME.

Semi-Dirac and Weyl fermions in transition metal oxides

We illustrate that a class of compounds with I4/mcm crystalline symmetry hosts three-dimensional semi-Dirac fermions. Unlike the known two-dimensional semi-Dirac points, the degeneracy of these three-dimensional semi-Dirac points is not lifted by spin-orbit coupling due to the protection by a nonsymmorphic symmetry—mirror reflection in the a–b plane and a translation along the c axis. This crystalline symmetry is found in tetragonal perovskite oxides, realizable in thin films by epitaxial strain that results in a 0 a 0 c - -type octahedral rotation. Interestingly, with broken time-reversal symmetry, two pairs of Weyl points emerge from the semi-Dirac points within the Brillouin zone, and an additional lattice distortion leads to an enhanced intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. The ability to tune the Berry phase by epitaxial strain can be useful in novel oxide-based electronic devices.

Spectroscopic fingerprints of gapless type-II fracton phases

Fracton phases feature elementary excitations with fractionalized mobility and are exciting interest from multiple areas of theoretical physics. However, the most exotic type-II fracton phases, like the Haah codes, currently have no known experimental diagnostics. Here, we explain how type-II fracton phases with gapless gauge modes, such as the U(1) Haah code, may be identified experimentally. Our analysis makes use of the multipole gauge theory description of type-II fracton phases, which exhibits ultraviolet-infrared (UV-IR) mixing. We show that neutron scattering experiments on gapless type-II fracton phases should generically exhibit exotic pinch points in the structure factor, with distinctive anisotropic contours as a direct consequence of UV-IR mixing. Furthermore, this characteristic pinch point structure provides a clean diagnostic of type-II fracton phases. We also identify distinctive signatures of the (3 + 1)-D U(1) Haah code in the low-temperature specific heat.

Superconductivity in a system of interacting spinful semions

Noninteracting particles obeying certain fractional statistics have been predicted to exhibit superconductivity. We discuss the issue in an attractively interacting system of spinful semions on a lattice by numerically investigating the presence of off-diagonal long-range order at zero temperature. For this purpose we construct a Hubbard model wherein two semions with opposite spin can virtually coincide while maintaining consistency with the fractional braiding statistics. Clear off-diagonal long-range order is seen in the strong coupling limit, consistent with the expectation that a pair of semions obeys Bose statistics. We find that the semion system behaves similarly to a system of fermions with the same attractive Hubbard U interaction for a wide range of U, suggesting that semions also undergo a BCS to BEC crossover as a function of U.

Robust cycloid crossover driven by anisotropy in the skyrmion host GaV 4 S 8

We report on the anomalous magnetization dynamics of the cycloidally modulated spin textures under the influence of uniaxial anisotropy in multiferroic GaV 4 S 8 . The temperature and field dependence of the linear ac susceptibility [$χ'_{1ω}$ (T, H)], AC magnetic loss [$χ''_{1ω}$ (T, H)], and nonlinear AC magnetic response [$M_{3ω}$ (T, H)] are examined across the magnetic phase diagram in the frequency range f = 10 - 10 000 Hz. According to recent theory, skyrmion vortices under axial crystal symmetry are confined along specific orientations, resulting in enhanced robustness against oblique magnetic fields and altered spin dynamics. We characterize the magnetic response of each spin texture and find that the dynamic rigidity of the Néel skyrmion lattice appears enhanced compared to Bloch-type skyrmions in cubic systems, even in the multidomain state. Anomalous M 3 ω and strong dissipation emerge over the same phase regime where strong variations in the cycloid pitch were observed on lowering temperature in recent small-angle neutron-scattering experiments [White et al., Phys. Rev. B 97, 020401(R) (2018)]. Here, we show that strong anisotropy also drives an extended crossover of the zero-field cycloid texture in GaV 4 S 8 . The frequency dependence of these dynamic signatures is consistent with that of a robust anharmonic spin texture exhibiting a correlated domain arrangement. The results underpin the essential role of magnetic anisotropy in enhancing the rigidity of topological spin textures for diverse applications.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in the topological semimetal FeSi

The energy spectrum of topological semimetals contains protected degeneracies in reciprocal space that correspond to Weyl, Dirac, or multifold fermionic states. To exploit the unconventional properties of these states, one has to access the electronic structure of the three-dimensional bulk. In this paper, we present a joint theory-experiment study of the electronic structure of a candidate topological semimetal with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We resolve the bulk electronic states of FeSi using momentum-dependent RIXS at the Fe L 3 edge. We observe a broad excitation continuum devoid of sharp features, consistent with particle-hole scattering in an underlying electronic band structure. Using density functional theory (DFT), we calculate the electronic structure of FeSi and derive a band theory formulation of RIXS in the fast collision approximation to model the scattering process with zero adjustable parameters. While band theory predicts an excitation continuum with broad spectral features similar to the observed ones, discrepancies between theory and experiment suggest the presence of low-energy processes that DFT alone does not account for. Further, this study of RIXS in a topological semimetal shows that RIXS is a useful tool for revealing unanticipated behavior of bulk electronic states in this class of materials.

Lifetime of Almost Strong Edge-Mode Operators in One-Dimensional, Interacting, Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

Almost strong edge-mode operators arising at the boundaries of certain interacting one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases with Z 2 symmetry have infinite temperature lifetimes that are nonperturbatively long in the integrability breaking terms, making them promising as bits for quantum information processing. We extract the lifetime of these edge-mode operators for small system sizes as well as in the thermodynamic limit. For the latter, a Lanczos scheme is employed to map the operator dynamics to a one-dimensional tight-binding model of a single particle in Krylov space. We suggest this model to be that of a spatially inhomogeneous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with a hopping amplitude that increases away from the boundary, and a dimerization that decreases away from the boundary. We associate this dimerized or staggered structure with the existence of the almost strong mode. Thus, the short time dynamics of the almost strong mode is that of the edge mode of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, while the long time dynamics involves decay due to tunneling out of that mode, followed by chaotic operator spreading. Furthermore, we show that competing scattering processes can lead to interference effects that can significantly enhance the lifetime.

Optimization and Comparison of Modern Offshore Wind Turbine Generators Using GeneratorSE 2.0

As the offshore wind industry keeps growing at a rapid pace, developers are bracing themselves for a huge demand in critical rare earth metals which will threaten an already vulnerable supply chain. The wind energy industry is addressing this problem by investing in modern generator technologies that employ magnets with reduced rare earth content and high-field magnets enabled by rare-earth-free superconductors. In this paper we introduce the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's newly advanced GeneratorSE 2.0, which is a design and optimization tool that was developed to investigate the feasibility of such modern generators. Two direct-drive generator topologies with different magnet materials and mounting arrangements are investigated: an outer-rotor, V-shaped interior permanent magnet generator, and an inner-rotor normally conducting armature, paired with a low-temperature superconducting field with race-track coils. These technologies were evaluated for a range of power ratings between 15 and 25 MW, which represent the next generation of offshore wind turbines for both fixed-bottom and floating applications. The analyses indicate a new trend favoring the low-temperature superconducting technology for the direct-drive system.

Topological phase transition without single particle gap closing in strongly correlated systems

Here, in this study, we show two models where changing topology does not necessarily close the bulk insulating charge gap as demanded in the standard noninteracting picture. From extensive determinantal and dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the half-filled and quarter-filled Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, we show that, for sufficiently strong interactions at either half- or quarter-filling, a transition between topological and trivial insulators occurs without the closing of a charge gap. To shed light on this behavior, we illustrate that an exactly solvable model reveals that while the single-particle gap remains, the many-body gap does, in fact, close. These two gaps are the same in the noninteracting system but depart from each other as the interaction turns on. We purport that for interacting systems, the proper probe of topological phase transitions is the closing of the many-body rather than the single-particle gap.

Time resolved electrical, optical, and thermal probes of topological spin textures in magnetic nanostructures

This project is a fundamental study of magnetization dynamics in nanoscale spin textures with topological properties. One example is magnetic skyrmions that form in chiral ferromagnetic material systems that lack inversion symmetry. We have concentrated on the scalable chiral magnetic metal B20 FeGe thin film that has an asymmetric exchange interaction due to non-centrosymmetric cubic lattice. While the asymmetric exchange interaction can be found at the interface of a ferromagnet and a heavy metal, manipulation of skyrmions at these interfaces is non-trivial due to pinning and it requires higher critical current. In contrast, B20 materials such as FeGe have superior material quality to offer pinning-free and low-current skyrmion motion.

2D Mg-Cu Intermetallic Compounds with Nontrivial Band Topology and Dirac Nodal Lines

Synthesis of vertical heterostructures that include atomically thin layers of materials with topologically nontrivial energy bands is desirable for exploring exotic quantum states. In this study, the authors report on atomic-layer-by-layer deposition of magnesium on copper(111) surface by molecular beam epitaxy, monitored in situ by low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction, and modeled by ab initio theory. It is found that a 2D MgCu 2 intermetallic compound forms during initial Mg deposition and persists till a full monolayer of Mg is formed. Deposition of additional Mg triggers a phase transition from the commensurate MgCu 2 to an incommensurate Mg 2 Cu layer and enables growth of the second layer of Mg. Ab initio calculations indicate non-trivial topology of the electron bands in the interfacial Mg 2 Cu layer and the existence of Dirac nodal lines near the Fermi level. The new 2D Mg 2 Cu material emerges as a promising platform to study new topological states of matter.

Experimental realization of classical Z 2 spin liquids in a programmable quantum device

We build and probe a Z 2 spin liquid in a programmable quantum device, the D-Wave DW-2000Q. Specifically, we observe the classical eight-vertex and six-vertex (spin ice) states and transitions between them. To realize this state of matter, we design a Hamiltonian with combinatorial gauge symmetry using only pairwise-qubit interactions and a transverse field, i.e., interactions which are accessible in this quantum device. The combinatorial gauge symmetry remains exact along the full quantum annealing path, landing the system onto the classical eight-vertex model at the endpoint of the path. The output configurations from the device allow us to directly observe the loop structure of the classical model. Moreover, we deform the Hamiltonian so as to vary the weights of the eight vertices and show that we can selectively attain the classical six-vertex (ice) model, or drive the system into a ferromagnetic state. Additionally, we present studies of the classical phase diagram of the system as a function of the eight-vertex deformations and effective temperature, which we control by varying the relative strengths of the programmable couplings, and we show that the experimental results are consistent with theoretical analysis. Finally, we identify additional capabilities that, if added to these devices, would allow us to realize Z 2 quantum spin liquids on which to build topological qubits.

Local magnetic moments due to loop currents in metals

We present Hartree-Fock calculations on a simple model to obtain the conditions of formation of local magnetic moments due to loop currents $L$ $o$ and spin-loop currents $L$ $s$ and compare them to the conditions of formation of local spin moments $M$ which were given long ago in a similar approximation by Anderson. A model with three degenerate orbitals sitting on an equilateral triangle, with on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions $U$ and $V$, respectively, and intersite kinetic energy, hybridizing with conduction electrons with a parameter $Δ$ is investigated. $L$ $o$ and $L$ $s$ are promoted by large $V$/$Δ$ and their magnitude is relatively unaffected by $U$/$Δ$. Spin-magnetic moments $M$ promoted by large $U$/$Δ$ on the other hand are adversely affected by $V$/$Δ$. In this model, $L$ $o$ for $V$ multiplied by the number of neighbors is approximately the same as the $M$ promoted by $U$ in Anderson’s local model for $M$. $L$ $o$ and $L$ $s$ are degenerate if exchange interactions and Hund’s rule are neglected but $L$ $o$ is favored when they are included. Many of the qualitative results are visible in an expression for the Hartree-Fock ground state energy derived as a function of small $L$ $o$ , $L$ $s$ , and $M$. Numerical minimization of the Hartree-Fock energy is presented for larger values. Additionally, we also briefly discuss the connection and differences of the interaction-generated orbital currents and spin currents discussed here and generalized to a lattice with the topological states in metals and semiconductors.

Chern numbers of topological phonon band crossing determined with inelastic neutron scattering

Topological invariants in the band structure, such as Chern numbers, are important for the understanding and classification of the topological properties of matter and dictate the occurrence of exotic behaviors, yet their direct spectroscopic determination has been largely limited to electronic bands. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering in conjunction with ab initio calculations to identify a variety of topological phonon band crossings in MnSi and CoSi single crystals. We find a distinct relation between the Chern numbers of a band-crossing node and the scattering intensity modulation in momentum space around the node. Given sufficiently high resolution, our method can be used to determine arbitrarily large Chern numbers of topological phonon band-crossing nodes.

Spectral theorems for generalized Weyl nodes with impurities in a magnetic field

Here, we prove a few spectral theorems for the density of states of a Weyl node with arbitrary topology. We show that the density of extended states of a Weyl node with random impurity potentials remains gapless in the presence of a magnetic field. Therefore, a magnetic field precludes Anderson localization in Weyl semimetals, when internode transitions are suppressed for smooth enough potentials. We also provide a rigorous quantum mechanical proof of the chiral magnetic effect for arbitrary topology of a Weyl node.

Effective Model for Fractional Topological Corner Modes in Quasicrystals

High-order topological insulators (HOTIs), as generalized from topological crystalline insulators, are characterized with lower-dimensional metallic boundary states protected by spatial symmetries of a crystal, whose theoretical framework based on band inversion at special k points cannot be readily extended to quasicrystals because quasicrystals contain rotational symmetries that are not compatible with crystals, and momentum is no longer a good quantum number. In this work, we develop a low-energy effective model underlying HOTI states in 2D quasicrystals for all possible rotational symmetries. By implementing a novel Fourier transform developed recently for quasicrystals and approximating the long-wavelength behavior by their large-scale average, we construct an effective k · p Hamiltonian to capture the band inversion at the center of a pseudo-Brillouin zone. We show that an in-plane Zeeman field can induce mass kinks at the intersection of adjacent edges of a 2D quasicrystal topological insulators and generate corner modes (CMs) with fractional charge, protected by rotational symmetries. Our model predictions are confirmed by numerical tight-binding calculations. Furthermore, when the quasicrystal is proximitized by an s-wave superconductor, Majorana CMs can also be created by tuning the field strength and chemical potential. Our work affords a generic approach to studying the low-energy physics of quasicrystals, in association with topological excitations and fractional statistics.
