Proceedings of the SMRM Degradation Study Workshop

This publication contains the proceedings of the Solar Maximum Repair Mission Degradation Study Workshop, held at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland on May 9-10, 1985. The main purpose of the workshop was to report on the results of tests and studies of the returned Solar Maximum Mission hardware and materials. Specifically, the workshop was concerned with studies of the effects of four years exposure to a low-earth orbital environment. A summary of the results reported at the workshop is included in this publication. To provide a background for the reported findings, the summary includes a short description of the Solar Maximum Mission and the Solar Maximum Repair Mission. Some of the papers contained in this publication have been submitted by the participating organizations after the presentations were made at the workshop and may not necessarily have the same title and author/presenter as in the workshop agenda.

Line plotting program using DI-3000/Grafmaker routines

A line plotting program has been developed using the DI-3000 graphics libraries and incorporates Grafmaker subroutines. The program allows multiple lines on a frame and multiple frames per run. Options such as automatic scaling, linear or single-cycle log graphs, and plot text such as titles, legends and axis labels are incorporated in the program. Greek and other fonts can be used in the plot text as well as upper and lower case text. Plot inputs are specified through a control file. The program also allows display of multiple independent data sets on a single graph.

Bibliographical index of objects observed by IUE 1978-85

A literature search covering the years 1978 to 1985 identified 1134 papers describing studies using data obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The names of greater than 9400 astronomical objects discussed were recorded. The objects were compiled into a list, along with each reference, and sorted by object name or catalog number. Cross-identification tables for the multiple names are provided. The 64-page Table of References includes the titles of the articles. This index enables a user to tell immediately where to find published papers describing IUE observations of the objects of interest.

A systems-level performance history of get away specials after 25 space shuttle missions

Summarized are the results of a thorough performance study of Get Away Special (GAS) payloads conducted in 1986. During the study, a complete list of standard and non-standard GAS payloads vs. Shuttle mission was constructed, including specific titles for the experiments in each canister. A broad data base for each canister and each experiment was then compiled. Performance results were then obtained for all but a few experiments. The canisters and experiments were subsequently categorized according to the degree of experiment success. For those experiments experiencing failures or anomalies, several correlations and generalizations were extracted from individual subsystem performance data. Recommendations are made which may enhance the success and performance of future GAS payloads.

Aeroelastic effects in multirotor vehicles. Part 2: Methods of solution and results illustrating coupled rotor/body aeromechanical stability

This report is a sequel to the earlier report titled, Aeroelastic Effects in Multi-Rotor Vehicles with Application to Hybrid Heavy Lift System, Part 1: Formulation of Equations of Motion (NASA CR-3822). The trim and stability equations are presented for a twin rotor system with a buoyant envelope and an underslung load attached to a flexible supporting structure. These equations are specialized for the case of hovering flight. A stability analysis, for such a vehicle with 31 degrees of freedom, yields a total of 62 eigenvalues. A careful parametric study is performed to identify the various blade and vehicle modes, as well as the coupling between various modes. Finally, it is shown that the coupled rotor/vehicle stability analysis provides information on both the aeroelastic stability as well as complete vehicle dynamic stability. Also presented are the results of an analytical study aimed at predicting the aeromechanical stability of a single rotor helicopter in ground resonance. The theoretical results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results, thereby validating the analytical model for the dynamics of the coupled rotor/support system.

Observation model and parameter partials for the JPL VLBI parameter estimation software MASTERFIT-1987

This report is a revision of the document of the same title (1986), dated August 1, which it supersedes. Model changes during 1986 and 1987 included corrections for antenna feed rotation, refraction in modelling antenna axis offsets, and an option to employ improved values of the semiannual and annual nutation amplitudes. Partial derivatives of the observables with respect to an additional parameter (surface temperature) are now available. New versions of two figures representing the geometric delay are incorporated. The expressions for the partial derivatives with respect to the nutation parameters have been corrected to include contributions from the dependence of UTI on nutation. The authors hope to publish revisions of this document in the future, as modeling improvements warrant.

Workshop on the Growth of Continental Crust

Constraints and observations were discussed on a fundamental unsolved problem of global scale relating to the growth of planetary crusts. All of the terrestrial planets were considered, but emphasis was placed on the Earth's continental crust. The title of each session is: (1) Extraterrestrial crustal growth and destruction; (2) Constraints for observations and measurements of terrestrial rocks; (3) Models of crustal growth and destruction; and (4) Process of crustal growth and destruction.

Development of the NASA/FLAGRO computer program

A preliminary version of a new computer program has been developed for calculating crack propagation in cyclically loaded structures. The new program, titled NASA/FLAGRO, has numerous enhanced features over previous programs used for safe life analysis on space systems. The essential features of the new program consist of modular design, promptive input using a cathode ray tube terminal, improved crack growth rate analytical methods, many new crack case solutions, and incorporation of user-defined files for material properties and fatigue spectrums. Also, five options made available in the program are to compute: (1) safe life of a part with a preexisting crack; (2) critical crack size for a specified stress level; (3) stress-intensity factor numerical values for making comparisons or checks of solutions; (4) least-squares fit of growth rate equations to crack growth rate data; and (5) the conversion of a versus N data to Delta K versus da/dN.

Shock tunnel studies of scramjet phenomena

Commissioning of the new T4 shock tunnel at the University of Queensland implied that it was no longer necessary to focus the work of the research group about an annual test series conducted in the T3 shock tunnel in Canberra. Therefore, it has been possible to organize a group for work to proceed along lines such that particular personnel are associated with particular project areas. The format of this report consists of a series of reports on specific project areas, with a brief general introduction commenting on each report. The introduction is structured by project areas, with the title of the relevant report stated under the project area heading. The reports themselves follow in the order of the project area headings.

Pilot factors guidelines for the operational inspection of navigation systems

A computerized human engineered inspection technique is developed for use by FAA inspectors in evaluating the pilot factors aspects of aircraft navigation systems. The short title for this project is Nav Handbook. A menu-driven checklist, computer program and data base (Human Factors Design Criteria) were developed and merged to form a self-contained, portable, human factors inspection checklist tool for use in a laboratory or field setting. The automated checklist is tailored for general aviation navigation systems and can be expanded for use with other aircraft systems, transports or military aircraft. The Nav Handbook inspection concept was demonstrated using a lap-top computer and an Omega/VLF CDU. The program generates standardized inspection reports. Automated checklists for LORAN/C and R NAV were also developed. A Nav Handbook User's Guide is included.
