Interplanetary Trajectory Optimization with Powerlimited Propulsion Systems

A trajectory-optimization process is described in which the optimum thrust equations are derived using the calculus of variations. The magnitude of the thrust is constrained within an upper and a lower bound, but the thrust direction is arbitrary. This formulation allows both the constant-thrust program and the variable-thrust program to be considered. For the constant-thrust program, certain propulsion-system parameters are optimized for maximum final vehicle mass. This theory has been used to study interplanetary missions to Venus and Mars using a power-limited propulsion system. Both one-way and round trip rendezvous trajectories are considered. The analysis employs a two-body inverse-square force-field model of three dimensions. An iterative routine used to solve the two-point boundary-value problem is described in the Appendix.

Optimum Interplanetary Rendezvous Trajectories With Powerlimited Vehicles

The optimum-thrust equations for both variable and constant thrust are presented. These thrust programs are used to generate rendezvous trajectories from the Earth to Mars for various flight times and launch dates during the years 1968-71. The manner in which the propulsion requirements vary with flight time and launch date are considered, and a comparison of vehicle performance using the variable- and constant-thrust programs is presented. The optimization of the pro- pulsion system parameters is discussed, and the existence of optimum launch dates is interpreted in terms of certain transversality conditions derivable from the calculus of variations. A brief comparison of the advanced propulsion vehicle and the ballistic vehicle propulsion requirements is made for Earth-Mars rendezvous trajectories. An appendix considering the analytical basis for this work is included.

Multiobjective Optimization of Low-Energy Trajectories Using Optimal Control on Dynamical Channels

We introduce a computational method to design efficient low-energy trajectories by extracting initial solutions from dynamical channels formed by invariant manifolds, and improving these solutions through variational optimal control. We consider trajectories connecting two unstable periodic orbits in the circular restricted 3-body problem (CR3BP). Our method leverages dynamical channels to generate a range of solutions, and approximates the areto front for impulse and time of flight through a multiobjective optimization of these solutions based on primer vector theory. We demonstrate the application of our method to a libration orbit transfer in the Earth-Moon system.

Abort Trajectory Design Strategies for the Artemis Missions

NASA's Artemis campaign plans to send astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972. The campaign relies on the Orion crew capsule to ferry the crew from Earth to an L2 9:2 lunar synodic resonant Near-Rectlinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) before descent to the lunar surface. This investigation examines a process to construct various abort families during transit from Earth to the NRHO using the Earth-Moon Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP). The initial trajectories are constructed using the CR3BP and categorized in families. A process is then summarized to transcribe and converge trajectories from the CR3BP into a higher-fidelity model. Ultimately, an effective methodology to develop, classify and converge these aborts in higher-fidelity is critical to the Artemis program in the event of an anomaly during the crew transit.

ORBITAL ELEMENT EQUATIONS FOR OPTIMUM LOW THRUST TRAJECTORIES

The three dimensional optimum trajectory relations developed by Messrs J. G. Cox and W. A. Shaw in Reference I, are transformed into- a form that appears more amenable to low thrust trajectory calculations. Orbital element coordinates, commonly used in Celestial Mechanics, are employed due to their slow variation in low thrust applications. Combinations of these elements and a generalized eccentric anomaly are utilized in arranging the resulting equations- in a form which does not contain circular singularities.

Analysis of various two synodic period Earth-Mars cycler trajectories

Trajectories that regularly encounter Earth and Mars but use small or no propulsive maneuvers are known as cycler trajectories, or cyclers. For cyclers that repeat after two Earth-Mars synodic periods, several variations are possible. A detailed investigation is presented of a simple two synodic period cycler, along with several promising variations using combinations of one year and half-year phasing orbits. Analysis is included for both the circular co-planar model and with actual Earth and Mars ephemerides.

A Search for Low V Earth-to-Moon Trajectories

A search for low V Earth-to-Moon trajectories has been initiated. Numerical integration of the equations of motion from the circular restricted three-body problem has resulted in the computation of a trajectory that saves more that 100 m/s over a Hohmann transfer, although the flight time is almost ten months.
