Permanent Criticality Termination Processes in Disposed DPCs

This report aims at answering what, how, and when spent nuclear fuel (SNF) or dual-purpose canister (DPC) characteristics could be impacted by disposal events and processes, including decay, corrosion, dissolution, and criticality, such that the potential for criticality initiation or continuation in disposed DPCs becomes permanently significantly diminished. This report uses the term "permanent termination of criticality to denote the significant diminishment of criticality potential, not absolute prevention. The occurrence of disposal processes and events is a direct function of disposal time. For fundamental processes (e.g., decay), time is absolute; however, for other processes (e.g., corrosion), time is relative because it is driven by a combination of DPC characteristics (e.g., fuel conditions, basket composition), geologic parameters (e.g., infiltration rate), engineered barrier design, and other processes and events that impact in-package chemistry.

Preservation of Mammalian Teeth and Bones Influences Identification of Terminal Pleistocene to Middle Holocene Hunter-Gatherer Subsistence at Ban Rai Rockshelter, Northwest Thailand

Ban Rai Rockshelter in northwest Thailand, dating to the Terminal Pleistocene and Middle Holocene, includes evidence for hunter-gatherer exploitation of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and arthropods. Abundant faunal remains, identified throughout site deposits, include macaques (Macaca sp.) and Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), but these identifications are influenced by an assemblage largely comprised of preserved tooth elements and fragmented bone. Area 3 at Ban Rai has the largest abundance and diversity of faunal remains recovered and identified in this study. Here, we examine the zooarchaeological assemblage from Ban Rai Rockshelter, to understand long-term hunter-gatherer subsistence change, influenced by site preservation, during and after the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. Our results support the presence of the exploitation of arboreal taxa during the Early and Middle Holocene in northwest Thailand.

Exploring the Feasibility and Performance of Perovskite/Antimony Selenide Four-Terminal Tandem Solar Cells

The tandem solar cell presents a potential solution to surpass the Shockley–Queisser limit observed in single-junction solar cells. However, creating a tandem device that is both cost-effective and highly efficient poses a significant challenge. In this study, we present proof of concept for a four-terminal (4T) tandem solar cell utilizing a wide bandgap (1.6–1.8 eV) perovskite top cell and a narrow bandgap (1.2 eV) antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) bottom cell. Using a one-dimensional (1D) solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS), our calculations indicate the feasibility of this architecture, projecting a simulated device performance of 23% for the perovskite/Sb 2 Se 3 4T tandem device. To validate this, we fabricated two wide bandgap semitransparent perovskite cells with bandgaps of 1.6 eV and 1.77 eV, respectively. These were then mechanically stacked with a narrow bandgap antimony selenide (1.2 eV) to create a tandem structure, resulting in experimental efficiencies exceeding 15%. The obtained results demonstrate promising device performance, showcasing the potential of combining perovskite top cells with the emerging, earth-abundant antimony selenide thin film solar technology to enhance overall device efficiency.

PAYLOAD SEPARATION AND THRUST TERMINATION IN A SOLID-PROPELLANT ROCKET MOTOR

A command method for thrust reduction and/or thrust termination of a solid-propellant rocket motor-called project Shavetail-was demonstrated successfully in flight by Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Thrust reduction is achieved by the separation of a portion of the nozzle to increase the throat area. The chamber pressure is lowered and motor continues to burn at a vernier level of thrust. At any time before motor burnout, upon command from guidance, thrust cancellation and motor separation from the payload are achieved by opening an orifice in the head end of the motor.

Adhesive-backed terminal board eliminates mounting screws

Low-profile terminal board is used in dense electronic circuits where mounting and working space is limited. The board has a thin layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive backing which eliminates the need for mounting screws.
