National Institute of Standards and Technology Requirements (Analysis Report)

EPOC uses the Deep Dive process to discuss and analyze current and planned science, research, or education activities and the anticipated data output of a particular use case, site, or project to help inform the strategic planning of a campus or regional networking environment. This includes understanding future needs related to network operations, network capacity upgrades, and other technological service investments. A Deep Dive comprehensively surveys major research stakeholders’ plans and processes in order to investigate data management requirements over the next 5–10 years. In October of 2022, staff members from the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC) met with researchers and staff from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the purpose of a Deep Dive into scientific and research drivers. The goal of this activity was to help characterize the requirements for a number of campus use cases, and to enable cyberinfrastructure support staff to better understand the needs of the researchers within the community. Material for this event included the written documentation from each of the profiled research areas, documentation about the current state of technology support, and a write-up of the discussion that took place via e-mail and video conferencing. The case studies highlighted the ongoing challenges and opportunities that NIST has in supporting a cross-section of established and emerging research use cases. Each case study mentioned unique challenges which were summarized into common needs.

Carbon, Nitrogen, and Sulfur Analysis of the Cetama Viognier Standard Reference Material

The Viognier sample was analyzed for C, N, and S concentrations and stable isotope compositions using an Elementar Vario Isotope Cube Elemental Analyzer (EA) that is coupled to an IsoPrime PrecisION IRMS. Powder samples were placed in tin capsules and then loaded onto a rotary autosampler. The autosampler dropped samples into the EA, and samples were combusted at 1175 °C over tungsten oxide in a continuous stream of helium carrier gas. A pulse of oxygen is added to the gas stream resulting in flash combustion of the tin capsule containing the sample, which raises the reaction temperature to approximately 1800 °C for a few seconds. The combustion reaction produces SO 2 , N 2 and CO 2 from any sulfur, nitrogen and carbon present in the sample. The resulting gases were then passed through a reduced copper reactor that was heated to 850 °C, to reduce NO x to N 2 , reduce SO 3 to SO 2 , and trap any volatile halogen compounds on silver wool. Following water removal using an adsorption tube, the N 2 , CO 2 , and SO 2 analyte gases were separated and purified using purge-trap columns. The purified gases were then carried through a thermal conductivity detector. The detector signal was passed to software that calculated elemental abundances based on integrated peak areas. The sample gases were then passed to the IRMS and stable isotope ratios were measured. Raw sample peak areas were corrected by subtracting the average peak area from blanks consisting of empty tin capsules run using the same EA analysis method. Blanks were also run following each replicate to verify that all the material was combusted. The Viognier sample was analyzed in triplicate on two days (target sample masses: 30, 60 and 90 mg). The following standards were analyzed to calibrate EA-IRMS measurements: IAEA-C6, USGS-40, USGS-41, IAEA-S1, and IAEA-S2.

Chemical Modeling of ATR Fuel in DOE Standard Canisters with Borated Stainless Steel Corrosion

Road-ready and final disposition packaging configurations for the ATR fuel dictates storage within helium backfilled sealed DOE standard canisters. The packaging configuration for the DOE canisters places 10 ATR elements within a Type 1a basket, and three baskets are loaded within each DOE canister. In order to provide a criticality control mechanism, these stainless baskets are proposed to be built with 1-2 weight percentage of boron. This report seeks to identify effects of corrosion of this basket material over time. The primary reaction found through surveying literature was the oxidation of the iron in steel by water to produce some hydrogen. This reaction was built into the previous chemical model of the DOE canister to assess additional hydrogen and pressure build up over time. Literature for non-borated stainless steel, and carbon steel has shown that irradiation increases the rate of corrosion, and it is assumed a similar effect would occur with borated stainless steel. Due to the wide range of results in literature, and the variation of the corrosion with boron content, a wide range of corrosion rates was tested in the model from 80 nm/yr up to 1800 nm/yr.

Conduct of Engineering Project Engineer Qualification Standard

This document describes the training and qualification requirements for the Project Engineer (PE) position at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Analysis indicates that the Project Engineer position is not required to meet the requirements of DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, Qualification, and Certification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities for “Technical Staff” positions. However, Engineering Services Division (ESD) has decided to hold their Project Engineers to a higher professional standard by developing a qualification program for the PEs.

Comparative Analysis of Standard and Advanced USL Methodologies [Slides]

This presentation is on the comparative analysis of standard and advanced USL methodologies. Each method has a different way to address/account for experimental biases and uncertainties. This study showed why bias and uncertainty predictions by these popular methods differ significantly in some cases. In order to establish confidence to our validation efforts, especially with new reactor concepts, in designing new critical experiments and claiming experimental coverage for our existing applications, we need to understand capabilities of our methods further.

2023 Standard Scenarios Report: A U.S. Electricity Sector Outlook

This report, originally published in December 2023, has been revised in January 2024. There were three changes in the revision. First, Anthony Lopez was added as a contributing author, as he had been erroneously omitted in the original publication. Second, in appendix section A.1 the cost of upgrading a hydrogen combustion turbine from a natural gas turbine was erroneously reported as 20% when it should have been 33%. Lastly, appendix Figure A-8 was erroneously a duplication of the same figure from the Standard Scenarios 2022, it has now been updated to reflect this year’s data.

Preliminary Gap Analysis of Existing IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2800 Standards Towards GFM Technology

This document describes the tests that are conducted on generic grid-forming (GFM) distributed energy resource (DER) and inverter-based resource (IBR) models to check if the performance of the model aligns respectively with the IEEE Std 1547 TM -2018 and IEEE Std 2800 TM -2022 requirements. For the IEEE Std 1547 TM -2018 requirements, specifically the tests related to volt-var requirements and frequency droop requirements are conducted. For the IEEE Std 2800 TM -2022 requirements, specifically the tests conducted are related to reactive- power-voltage control requirements, active-power-frequency response requirements, voltage disturbance ride through requirements and phase jump ride through requirements. This is an initial draft/document. There are many more tests still yet to be done to further verify if the existing standards have a gap or inadvertent barrier to GFM technology.

Standardization of Ancillary Installation Tooling for SRF Cavities at Fermilab

For assemblies of cavities in cleanrooms, single-use tooling systems are made for the alignment and installation of ancillary components such as couplers and bellows. To try and minimize the amount of tooling sets used, a design has been created to standardize alignment features to allow for assembly of different components with one set of tooling. A prototype set of tooling has been developed to with the required degrees of freedom for multiple assemblies while minimizing deformation during the assembly process. Prototype designs have been created for PIP-II SSR2 and 650 Cavities and for AUP Crab Cavities. Using 3D printing, this tooling can be quickly adjusted to allow for different ancillary components. The development process and status of the design will be discussed.

Lattice field theory beyond the standard model

We conducted theoretical studies in high energy physics beyond the standard model, using lattice gauge theory techniques, with a particular emphasis on supersymmetric fields theories. There are many reasons for formulating and studying such theories using this first principles approach, with the goal in mind of repeating the successes of lattice quantum chromodynamics—which are quite substantial.

Towards a standard approach to the analysis of carbon products generated from Natural Gas pyrolysis

Conference presentation for the work entitled “A standard approach to the analysis of carbon products generated from Natural Gas pyrolysis”. Pyrolysis of natural gas (NGP) has been proposed as a near term solution for the production of direct CO2 free (turquoise) hydrogen, to help fuel a more sustainable energy future. NGP can serve as a bridging technology while other (green) hydrogen production technologies mature. In order for NGP to be successful, the management of the generated carbon products needs to be carefully considered. Necessary markets need to be considered to incorporate the (turquoise) carbon products that are generated. A large hurdle in addressing the channeling of carbon products into desired markets is determining exactly what is manufactured from the NGP process. In this work an analysis method is presented that combines a suite of techniques for the assessment of the carbon product from Natural Gas Pyrolysis for appropriate identification and quality control.
