Characterizing random-singlet state in two-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets and implications for the double perovskite Sr 2 CuTe 1 – x W x O 6

Motivated by the experimental observation of a nonmagnetic phase in compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of a spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor J 1 and next-nearest-neighbor J 2 couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on a cylinder system with a circumference of up to ten lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing J 2 /J 1 in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin-glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random-singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of nonmagnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. Here, we also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr 2 CuTe 1–x W x O 6 .

Effective one-band models for the one-dimensional cuprate Ba 2-x Sr x CuO 3+δ

In this work, we consider a multiband Hubbard model H m for Cu and O orbitals in Ba 2-x Sr x CuO 3+δ similar to the three-band model for two-dimensional cuprates. The hopping parameters are obtained from maximally localized Wannier functions derived from ab initio calculations. Using the cell perturbation method, we derive both a generalized t–J model H tJ and a one-band Hubbard model H H to describe the low-energy physics of the system. H tJ has the advantage of having a smaller relevant Hilbert space, facilitating numerical calculations, while additional terms should be included in H H to accurately describe the multiband physics of H m . Using H tJ and the density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate the wave-vector-resolved photoemission and discuss the relevant features in comparison with recent experiments. In agreement with previous calculations, we find that the addition of an attractive nearest-neighbor interaction of the order of the nearest-neighbor hopping shifts the weight from the 3k F to the holon-folding branch. Kinetic effects also contribute to this process.

Persistent Josephson tunneling between Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + x flakes twisted by 45 ° across the superconducting dome

There is a heated debate on the Josephson effect in twisted Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x flakes. Recent experimental results suggest the presence of either anomalously isotropic pairing or exotic d+id-wave pairing, in addition to the commonly believed d-wave one. Here, we address this controversy by fabricating ultraclean junctions with uncompromised crystalline quality and stoichiometry at the junction interfaces. In the optimally doped regime, we obtain prominent Josephson coupling (2-4 mV) in multiple junctions with the twist angle of 45°, in sharp contrast to a recent report that shows two orders of magnitude suppression around 45° from the value at 0°. We further extend this study to the previously unexplored overdoped regime and observe pronounced Josephson tunneling at 45° together with Josephson diode effect up to 50 K. In conclusion, our work helps establish the persistent presence of an isotropic pairing component across the entire superconducting phase diagram.

Consistency between reflection momentum-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy and optical spectroscopy measurements of the long-wavelength density response of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + x

The density fluctuation spectrum captures many fundamental properties of strange metals. Using momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (M-EELS), we recently showed that the density response of the strange metal Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x (Bi-2212) at large momentum, q, exhibits a constant-in-frequency continuum reminiscent of the marginal Fermi liquid (MFL) hypothesis of the late 1980s. However, reconciling this observation with infrared (IR) optics experiments, which show a well-defined plasmon excitation at q ~ 0, has been challenging. Here we report M-EELS measurements of Bi-2212 using 4× improved momentum resolution, allowing us to reach the optical limit. For momenta q < 0.04 r.l.u., the M-EELS data show a plasmon feature that is quantitatively consistent with IR optics. For q > 0.04 r.l.u., the spectra become incoherent with an MFL-like, constant-in-frequency form. Here we speculate that, at finite frequency, ω, and nonzero q, some attribute of this Planckian metal randomizes the probe electron, causing it to lose information about its own momentum.

Random fields from quenched disorder in an archetype for correlated electrons: The parallel spin stripe phase of La 1.6 – x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 at the 1/8 anomaly

The parallel stripe phase is remarkable both in its own right, and in relation to the other phases with which it coexists. Its inhomogeneous nature makes such states susceptible to random fields from quenched magnetic vacancies. Here we argue this is the case by introducing low concentrations of nonmagnetic Zn impurities (0%–10%) into La 1.6–x ⁢Nd 0.4⁢ Sr x ⁢CuO 4 (Nd-LSCO) with x=0.125 in single-crystal form, well below the percolation threshold of ~41% for a two-dimensional square lattice. Elastic neutron scattering measurements on these crystals show clear magnetic quasi-Bragg peaks at all Zn dopings. While all the Zn-doped crystals display order parameters that merge into each other and the background at ~68 K, the temperature dependence of the order parameter as a function of Zn concentration is drastically different. This result is consistent with meandering charge stripes within the parallel stripe phase, which are pinned in the presence of quenched magnetic vacancies. In turn it implies vacancies that preferentially occupy sites within the charge stripes, and hence that can be very effective at disrupting superconductivity in Nd-LSCO (x=0.125), and, by extension, in all systems exhibiting parallel stripes.

From nonmetal to strange metal at the stripe-percolation transition in La 2 - x Sr x CuO 4

The nature of the normal state of cuprate superconductors continues to stimulate considerable speculation. Of particular interest has been the linear temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity in the low-temperature limit, which violates the prediction for a Fermi liquid. We present measurements of anisotropic resistivity in La$_{2–x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ that confirm the strange-metal behavior for crystals with doped-hole concentration $p = x > p^* \sim 0.19$ and contrast with the nonmetallic behavior for $p < p^*$. We propose that the changes at $p^*$ are associated with a first-order transition from doped Mott insulator to conventional metal; the transition appears as a crossover due to intrinsic dopant disorder. We consider results from the literature that support this picture; in particular, we present a simulation of the impact of the disorder on the first-order transition and the doping dependence of stripe correlations. Below $p^*$, the strong electronic interactions result in charge and spin stripe correlations that percolate across the CuO 2 planes; above $p^*$, residual stripe correlations are restricted to isolated puddles. Here we suggest that the $T$-linear resistivity results from scattering of quasiparticles from antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations within the correlated puddles. This is a modest effect compared to the case at $p < p^*$, where the data suggest that there are no coherent quasiparticles in the normal state.

Charge order driven multiferroic behavior in Sr 4 Fe 6 O 12 : An ab-initio study

Here, in this paper, we report the structural, electronic, and ferroelectric properties of the layered mixed-valent transition-metal compound Sr 4 ⁢ Fe 6 ⁢O 12 (SFO). We demonstrate how SFO undergoes a phase transition from a high-temperature (𝑇) centrosymmetric tetragonal phase (𝑃⁢4 2 /𝑚⁢𝑛⁢𝑚) to a low-𝑇 polar orthorhombic phase (𝑃⁢𝑚⁢𝑛⁢2 1 ). The transition is primarily driven by charge ordering at tetrahedral Fe-layer creating Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ cations between two edge-sharing tetrahedra. This charge ordering induces electronic polarization, which is remarkably larger (3.5 times) in magnitude than ionic polarization and oppositely directed, giving a net polarization of 0.05 C/m 2 which is comparable to the state-of-the-art rare-earth nickelets and manganite perovskites. The direction of structural distortion, governed by the polar mode irrep $Γ^−_5$, depends sensitively on the type of magnetic ordering in the Fe-octahedral layer. Consequently, both the ionic and electronic polarization directions are influenced by magnetic ordering, suggesting the potential for multiferroic behavior with strong magnetoelectric coupling in this material.

Strongly Correlated Charge Density Wave in La 2 – x Sr x CuO 4 Evidenced by Doping-Dependent Phonon Anomaly

The discovery of charge-density-wave-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. In this paper, we report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La 2 – x Sr x CuO 4 finding that charge-density wave effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x = 0.21 before disappearing at x = 0.25 . The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross section for phonons and charge-density-wave-induced phonon softening. We interpret our results in terms of a charge-density wave that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the charge-density-wave-induced modification of the lattice.

Superconducting Dome in Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 Infinite Layer Films

We show the phase diagram of Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 infinite layer thin films grown on SrTiO 3 . A superconducting dome spanning 0.125 < x < 0.25 is found, remarkably similar to cuprates, albeit over a narrower doping window. However, while cuprate superconductivity is bounded by an insulator for underdoping and a metal for overdoping, here we observe weakly insulating behavior on either side of the dome. Furthermore, the normal state Hall coefficient is always small and proximate to a continuous zero crossing in doping and in temperature, in contrast to the ~ 1/x dependence observed for cuprates. This suggests the presence of both electronlike and holelike bands, consistent with band structure calculations.

Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling for Charge-Density-Wave Formation in La 1.8-$x$ Eu 0.2 Sr $x$ CuO 4+$δ$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La 1.8-x Eu 0.2 Sr x CuO 4+δ . In this work, we investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW ordering vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW ordering vector of M ≃ 0.36 eV , which decreases to M ≃ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Short-Range Nematic Fluctuations in Sr 1-x Na x Fe 2 As 2 Superconductors

Interactions between nematic fluctuations, magnetic order and superconductivity are central to the physics of iron-based superconductors. Here we report on in-plane transverse acoustic phonons in hole-doped Sr 1-x Na x Fe 2 As 2 measured via inelastic x-ray scattering, and extract both the nematic susceptibility and the nematic correlation length. By a self-contained method of analysis, for the underdoped (x = 0.36) sample, which harbors a magnetically ordered tetragonal phase, we find it hosts a short nematic correlation length ξ ~ 10Å and a large nematic susceptibility Χ nem . The optimal-doped (x = 0.55) sample exhibits weaker phonon softening effects, indicative of both reduced xi and Χ nem . Overall, our results suggest short-range nematic fluctuations may favor superconductivity, placing emphasis on the nematic correlation length for understanding the iron-based superconductors.

Optical Properties of the Infinite-Layer La 1-x Sr x NiO 2 and Hidden Hund's Physics

We investigate the optical properties of the normal state of the infinite-layer La 1-x Sr x NiO 2 using density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory. We find a correlated metal which exhibits substantial transfer of spectral weight to high energies relative to the density functional theory. The correlations are not due to Mott physics, which would suppress the charge fluctuations and the integrated optical spectral weight as we approach a putative insulating state. Instead, we find the unusual situation, that the integrated optical spectral weight decreases with doping and increases with increasing temperature. We contrast this with the coherent component of the optical conductivity, which decreases with increasing temperature as a result of a coherence-incoherence crossover. Our studies reveal that the effective crystal field splitting is dynamical and increases strongly at low frequency. This leads to a picture of a Hund's metallic state, where dynamical orbital fluctuations are visible at intermediate energies, while at low energies a Fermi surface with primarily d x 2 -y 2 character emerges. The infinite-layer nickelates are thus in an intermediate position between the iron based high temperature superconductors where multiorbital Hund's physics dominates and a one-band system such as the cuprates. To capture this physics we propose a low-energy two-band model with atom centered e g states.

Two-Dimensional Superconducting Fluctuations Associated with Charge-Density-Wave Stripes in La 1.87 ⁢Sr 0.13 ⁢Cu 0.99 ⁢Fe 0.01 ⁢O 4

The presence of a small concentration of in-plane Fe dopants in La 1.87 Sr 0.13 Cu 0.99 Fe 0.01 O 4 is known to enhance stripelike spin and charge density wave (SDW and CDW) order and suppress the superconducting T c . Here, we show that it also induces highly two-dimensional superconducting correlations that have been argued to be the signatures of a new form of superconducting order, the so-called pair density wave (PDW) order. In addition, using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we find that the two-dimensional superconducting fluctuation is strongly associated with the CDW stripe. In particular, the PDW signature first appears when the correlation length of the CDW stripe grows over eight times the lattice unit (~8 a). In conclusion, these results provide critical conditions for the formation of the PDW order.

Multiple Charge Density Waves and Superconductivity Nucleation at Antiphase Domain Walls in the Nematic Pnictide Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2

How superconductivity interacts with charge or nematic order is one of the great unresolved issues at the center of research in quantum materials. Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 (BSNA) is a charge ordered pnictide superconductor recently shown to exhibit a sixfold enhancement of superconductivity due to nematic fluctuations near a quantum phase transition (at $x_c$ = 0.7). The superconductivity is, however, anomalous, with the resistive transition for $0.4 < x < x_c$ occurring at a higher temperature than the specific heat anomaly. Here, using x-ray scattering, we discovered a new charge density wave (CDW) in BSNA in this composition range. The CDWis commensurate with a period of two lattice parameters, and is distinct from the two CDWs previously reported in this material. We argue that the anomalous transport behavior arises from heterogeneous superconductivity nucleating at antiphase domain walls in this CDW. We also present new data on the incommensurate CDW, previously identified as being unidirectional, showing that it is a rotationally symmetric “4$\textit{Q}$” state with $C_4$ symmetry. Our study establishes BSNA as a rare material containing three distinct CDWs, and an exciting test bed for studying coupling between CDW, nematic, and SC orders.

Hybridization of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles between Adjacent CuO 2 Layers in the Triple-Layer Cuprate Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10 + δ Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Hybridization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (BQPs) between the CuO 2 layers in the triple-layer cuprate high-temperature superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 Cu 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the superconducting state, an anticrossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hopping with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the d-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without an abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off nodal to the antinodal region, which is explained by the momentum dependence of the interlayer single-particle hopping. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO 2 layers and spin fluctuations represented by a four-well model are discussed.

Order-Disorder Transitions in ( Ca x Sr 1 - x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13

The classification of structural phase transitions as displacive or order-disorder in character is usually based on spectroscopic data above the transition. Here, we use single crystal x-ray diffraction to investigate structural correlations in the quasiskutterudites, (Ca x Sr 1-x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 , which have a quantum phase transition at x ~ 0.9. Three-dimensional pair distribution functions show that the amplitudes of local atomic displacements are temperature independent below the transition and persist to well above the transition, a signature of order-disorder behavior. The implications for the associated electronic transitions are discussed.

Controllable Emergent Spatial Spin Modulation in Sr 2 IrO 4 by In Situ Shear Strain

Symmetric anisotropic interaction can be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic at the same time but for different crystallographic axes. We show that the competition of anisotropic interactions of orthogonal irreducible representations can be a general route to obtain new exotic magnetic states. We demonstrate it here by observing the emergence of a continuously tunable 12-layer spatial spin modulation when distorting the square-lattice planes in the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Sr 2 IrO 4 under in situ shear strain. Furthermore, this translation-symmetry-breaking phase is a result of an unusual strain-activated anisotropic interaction which is at the fourth order and competing with the inherent quadratic anisotropic interaction. Such a mechanism of competing anisotropy is distinct from that among the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and/or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and it could be widely applicable and highly controllable in low-dimensional magnets.

Suppressed Fluctuations as the Origin of the Static Magnetic Order in Strained Sr 2 RuO 4

Combining first-principles density-functional calculations and Moriya's self-consistent renormalization theory, we explain the recently reported counterintuitive appearance of an ordered magnetic state in uniaxially strained Sr 2 RuO 4 beyond the Lifshitz transition. We show that strain weakens the quantum spin fluctuations, which destroy the static order, more strongly than the tendency to magnetism. Furthermore, a different rate of decrease of the spin fluctuations vs magnetic stabilization energy promotes the onset of a static magnetic order beyond a critical strain.
