9 Li($\textit{d,p}$) reaction as a specific probe of 10 Li, the paradigm of parity-inverted nuclei around the $\textit{N}$ = 6 closed shell

In this work, we show, within the framework of renormalized nuclear field theory and of the induced reaction surrogate formalism, that the highly debated 10 Li structure, studied in a recent high statistics 9 Li ($\textit{d,p}$) 10 Li one-neutron transfer experiment, is consistent with, or better, requires, the presence of a virtual 1/2 + state of similar single-particle strength than that of the 1/2 – resonance at 0.45 ± 0.03 MeV. Based on continuum spectroscopy self-energy techniques, we find that the physical mechanism responsible for parity inversion in $^{10}_3$Li is the same as that at the basis of the similar phenomenon observed in $^{11}_4$Be and as that needed in 11 Li to have an important $\textit{s}$-wave ground-state component. In particular the strong dynamical coupling between the $s_{1/2}$ and the $d_{5/2}$ states, mediated by the quadrupole vibration of the core 9 Li. A phenomenon which also affects the strength distribution of the $d_{5/2}$ state, in particular, in the energy range of 3–4.5 MeV. Furthermore, this mechanism is also consistent with the (normal) sequence of the $1_{p_{1/2}}$ and $2_{s_{1/2}}$ levels in the $\textit{N}$ = 7 isotones $^{12}_5$B and $^{13}_6$C. The main aim of the present Rapid Communication is that of treating structure and reactions on equal footing and in a common language. In other words, the calculation of the 9 Li ($\textit{d,p}$) 10 Li reaction as a single conceptual step from individual single-particle motion and collective vibrations to absolute double differential cross sections of renormalized virtual and resonant final states, which can be directly compared with experiment.

β -decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich isotopes beyond the N = 82 shell gap

The β -decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei Sn 134 - 139 , Sb 134 - 142 , Te 137 - 144 , I 140 - 146 , Xe 142 - 148 , Cs 145 - 151 , Ba 148 - 153 , and La 151 - 155 were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory employing the projectile fission fragments of U 238 . The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of r process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ( A ≈ 130) peak.

Possible quenching of static neutron pairing near the N=98 deformed shell gap: Rotational structures in 160,161 Gd

A 160 Gd beam was accelerated to an energy of 1000 MeV and, separately, bombarded thick targets of 154 Sm and 164 Dy in order to observe neutron-rich, rare-earth nuclei via deep-inelastic collision processes. Gammasphere was utilized to observe g-ray emissions. Here, many new states and transitions were observed in 160 Gd as a result of so-called "unsafe" Coulomb excitation. The ground-state band in 160 Gd has been extended to I π = 20 + and a rotational band based on the K π = 4 + state, previously associated with a hexadecapole vibration, was observed up to 18 + . The quasiparticle configuration of the K π = 4 + band has been determined, and its unusual alignment behavior may result from a possible quenching of static neutron pairing. In addition, the band based on the [523]5/2 quasineutron orbital in 161 Gd was extended from 11/2 – to 33/2 – , and also displays the same unusual alignment behavior.

Triaxiality in the mid-shell nucleus 112 Pd

In this work, lifetimes of low-spin excited states in 112 Pd were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique. The nucleus of interest was populated in a 110 Pd( 18 O, 16 O) 112 Pd reaction using the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Three lifetimes of ground-state band members and one lifetime of the γ band were measured. From these lifetimes reduced transition probabilities were extracted and compared to interacting boson model, γ-soft calculations, and Davydov calculations. The lifetime of the $2_{γ}^{+}$ gives some insights on the nuclear shape and structure of the γ band. The deduced transition rates show an indicator for a rigid triaxial nucleus as well as more indicators for a γ-soft nucleus.

Influence of additional neutrons on the fusion cross section beyond the N = 8 shell

Fusion enhancement for neutron-rich isotopes of oxygen on carbon nuclei was probed. To measure the fusion cross-section a 20O beam accelerated to E lab /A = 2.7 MeV bombarded the active-target detector MuSIC@Indiana with a fill gas of CH 4 . Examination of the average fusion cross-section over the interval 0.5 ≤ (E c.m. –V B )/V B ≤ 1.2 for 16–20 O + 12 C reveals that while even isotopes of oxygen exhibit essentially the same cross-section, the cross-section for odd isotopes can be either enhanced or suppressed relative to the even A members of the isotopic chain. Theoretical models fail to explain the observed experimental results.

Impact of the MARATHON data on F 2⁢n⁡ /F 2⁢p and off-shell effects in light nuclei

The neutron structure function, F 2⁢n⁡ , has historically been extracted from measurements of the deuteron structure function, which is limited by our understanding of the nuclear effects on the bound proton and neutron. The MARATHON Collaboration recently extracted F 2⁢n⁡ from the comparison of 3 H and 3 He targets, where the nuclear effects are larger but nearly identical, yielding a precise extraction of F 2⁢n⁡ /F 2⁢p . Here, to ensure that this comparison is not biased by the specific model of nuclear effects used by MARATHON, we examine a range of models of the nuclear effects to obtain a more conservative, but more model-independent, extraction of F 2⁢n⁡ /F 2⁢p for comparison with deuteron extractions. Even with this approach, the results are precise enough to compare to deuteron extractions, providing new constraints on the nuclear effects in the deuteron and indicating the need for larger nuclear corrections than those included in most models.
