Search for a 3+1 Sterile Neutrino with the MicroBooNE Experiment using Deep-Learning-Based Reconstruction

In this note we present the methods and sensitivity for a search for sterile neutrinos based on the 3+1 model in the MicroBooNE experiment. The recently released results by MicroBooNE show no sign of the MiniBooNE/LSND low-energy-excess anomaly. The 3+1 model examined here expands on the standard model of neutrinos by adding a fourth neutrino flavor and is not necessarily ruled out by the lack of a low energy excess. The search presented relies on Deep-Learning-based reconstruction tools and looks for charged current quasi-elastic-like (CCQE-like) events kinematically consistent with a 2-body interaction. Using two orthogonal samples of CCQE electron neutrino events and CCQE muon neutrino events, we test this model allowing for electron neutrino appearance, electron neutrino disappearance, and muon neutrino disappearance. We present the sensitivity to the oscillation parameters using the Wilks’ theorem exclusion confidence levels. We demonstrate the use of a minimizer to find the best fit and discuss the effect of using a Feldman-Cousins’ procedure instead of Wilks’ theorem to determine sensitivity.

Simplified inelastic constitutive models for ASME Section III, Division 5 design by inelastic analysis

This report describes the development of simplified, universal constitutive model that captures the high temperature monotonic and cyclic behavior of a range of commonly-used high temperature materials. The goal of the work is to provide a simple, universal constitutive model to replace the current bespoke models for Grade 91, 316H, and Alloy 617 included in Nonmandatory Appendix HBB-Z of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, and to extend this model to cover Alloy 800H. We initiated this work in response to feedback from reactor vendors and other Code users requesting simplified models, compared to the current models, that are easier to implement and use in commercial finite element analysis software. This report describes the completion of this effort by developing a model to correct the defects in standard model forms presently used for high temperature material modeling, described in past work, developing and implementing new numerical methods to train this model against test data, and then actually training the model for the four materials. The report provides a complete mathematical description of the model along with the tabulated material coefficients for the four materials. The final step will be to formulate an ASME Code change to introduce the new models into the Code.

Machine Learning Neutrino-Nucleus Cross Sections

Neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections are critical theoretical inputs for long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. However, robust modeling of these cross sections remains challenging. For a simple but physically motivated toy model of the DUNE experiment, we demonstrate that an accurate neural-network model of the cross section -- leveraging Standard Model symmetries -- can be learned from near-detector data. We then perform a neutrino oscillation analysis with simulated far-detector events, finding that the modeled cross section achieves results consistent with what could be obtained if the true cross section were known exactly. This proof-of-principle study highlights the potential of future neutrino near-detector datasets and data-driven cross-section models.

SUSY 2025 at UC Santa Cruz (Final Technical Report)

The 32nd International Conference on Supersymmetry and the Unification of Fundamental Interactions (SUSY 2025) took place from August 18--23, 2025. During the week preceding the SUSY 2025 conference, the associated pre-SUSY school took place from August 11--15, 2025. Both events were organized and hosted by the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The SUSY 2025 conference brought together theorists and experimentalists specializing in particle physics, astroparticle physics, cosmology, mathematical physics, and string theory to discuss recent developments in these areas, with a focus on theoretical aspects and experimental searches associated with phenomena that lie beyond the Standard Model of particle physics and the standard mathematical framework of modern cosmology. The pre-SUSY school provided advanced pedagogical lectures for graduate students and early-career postdoctoral researchers on many of the foundational topics that were subsequently addressed in the main SUSY 2025 conference that followed. DOE support helped increase accessibility for early-career scientists by covering conference support costs that enabled free participation in the pre-SUSY school and substantially reduced registration fees for students attending the conference.

Constraining Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature Evolution With Sunyaev–Zel’Dovich Galaxy Clusters from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope

The Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) effect introduces a specific distortion of the blackbody spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation when it scatters off hot gas in clusters of galaxies. The frequency dependence of the distortion is only independent of the cluster redshift when the evolution of the CMB radiation is adiabatic. Here, using 370 clusters within the redshift range 0.07 ≲ z ≲ 1.4 from the largest SZ-selected cluster sample to date from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, we provide new constraints on the deviation of CMB temperature evolution from the standard model $\alpha ={0.017}_{-0.032}^{+0.029}$, where $T(z)={T}_{0}{\left(1+z\right)}^{1-\alpha }$. This result is consistent with no deviation from the standard adiabatic model. Combining it with previous, independent data sets we obtain a joint constraint of α = –0.001 ± 0.012. Attributing deviation from adiabaticity to the decay of dark energy, this result constrains its effective equation of state ${w}_{\mathrm{eff}}=-{0.998}_{-0.010}^{+0.008}$.

Search for π 0 decays to invisible particles

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS reports a study of a sample of 4 × 10 9 tagged π0 mesons from K + → π + π 0 (γ), searching for the decay of the π 0 to invisible particles. No signal is observed in excess of the expected background fluctuations. An upper limit of 4.4 × 10 –9 is set on the branching ratio at 90% confidence level, improving on previous results by a factor of 60. This result can also be interpreted as a model- independent upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay K + → π + X, where X is a particle escaping detection with mass in the range 0.110–0.155 GeV/c 2 and rest lifetime greater than 100 ps. Model-dependent upper limits are obtained assuming X to be an axion-like particle with dominant fermion couplings or a dark scalar mixing with the Standard Model Higgs boson.

Gravitational waves from global cosmic strings and cosmic archaeology

Global cosmic strings are predicted in many motivated extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics, with close connections to axion dark matter physics. Recent studies suggest that, although subdominant relative to Goldstone emission, gravitational wave (GW) signals from global strings can be detectable with current and planned GW detectors such as LIGO, LISA, DECIGO/BBO, ET/CE and AEDGE/AION, as well as pulsar timing arrays such as PPTA, NANOGrav and SKA. This work is an extensive, updated study on GWs from a global cosmic string network, taking into account of the most recent developments related to the subject. The main analysis is based on the analytical Velocity-dependent One-Scale (VOS) model calibrated with recent simulation results, which provides a generic protocol for such calculations with details given. We also demonstrate how the GW signal can be influenced with variations to the baseline model: this includes considering the uncertainties of model parameters and the potential deviation from the conventional VOS model prediction (i.e. the scaling behavior) as suggested by some of the recent simulation results. Furthermore, we investigated in detail the effect of a non-standard cosmology (e.g. early matter domination or kination) or new particle species on the GW signals from global strings. We demonstrate that the frequency spectrum of GW background from global cosmic strings can be used to probe the cosmic history prior to the Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) (i.e. the primordial dark age) up to a temperature of T ~ 10 8 GeV.

Long-lived biνo at the LHC

We examine the detection prospects for a long-lived bi ν o, a pseudo-Dirac bino which is responsible for neutrino masses, at the LHC and at dedicated long-lived particle detectors. The bi ν o arises in U(1) R -symmetric supersymmetric models where the neutrino masses are generated through higher dimensional operators in an inverse seesaw mechanism. At the LHC the bi ν o is produced through squark decays and it subsequently decays to quarks, charged leptons and missing energy via its mixing with the Standard Model neutrinos. We consider long-lived bi ν os which escape the ATLAS or CMS detectors as missing energy and decay to charged leptons inside the proposed long-lived particle detectors FASER, CODEX-b, and MATHUSLA. We find the currently allowed region in the squark-bi ν o mass parameter space by recasting most recent LHC searches for jets+. We also determine the reach of MATHUSLA, CODEX-b and FASER. We find that a large region of parameter space involving squark masses, bi ν o mass and the messenger scale can be probed with MATHUSLA, ranging from bi ν o masses of 10 GeV-2 TeV and messenger scales 10 2 - 11 TeV for a range of squark masses.

Aspects of nonlinear effect on black hole superradiance

Under some conditions, light boson fields grow exponentially around a rotating black hole, called the superradiance instability. We discuss effects of nonlinear interactions of the boson on the instability. In particular, we focus on the effect of the particle production and show that the growth of the boson cloud may be saturated much before the black hole spin is extracted by the boson cloud, while the nonlinear interactions also induce the boson emission. For application, we revisit the superradiant instability of the standard model photon, axion and hidden photon.

Functional prescription for EFT matching

We simplify the one-loop functional matching formalism to develop a streamlined prescription. The functional approach is conceptually appealing: all calculations are performed within the UV theory at the matching scale, and no prior determination of an Effective Field Theory (EFT) operator basis is required. Our prescription accommodates any relativistic UV theory that contains generic interactions (including derivative couplings) among scalar, fermion, and vector fields. As an example application, we match the singlet scalar extended Standard Model (SM) onto SMEFT.

Flavoured axions in the tail of B q → μ+μ- and B → γ* form factors

We discuss how LHC di-muon data collected to study B q → μμ can be used to constrain light particles with flavour-violating couplings to b -quarks. Focussing on the case of a flavoured QCD axion, a , we compute the decay rates for B q → μμa and the SM background process B q → μμγ near the kinematic endpoint. These rates depend on non-perturbative B q → γ (*) form factors with on- or off-shell photons. The off-shell form factors — relevant for generic searches for beyond-the-SM particles — are discussed in full generality and computed with QCD sum rules for the first time. This includes an extension to the low-lying resonance region using a multiple subtracted dispersion relation. With these results, we analyse available LHCb data to obtain the sensitivity on B q → μμa at present and future runs. We find that the full LHCb dataset alone will allow to probe axion-coupling scales of the order of 10 6 GeV for both b → d and b → s transitions. As a spin-off application of the off-shell form factors we further analyse the case of light, Beyond the Standard Model, vectors.

Search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons in final states with two same-sign or three leptons with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ + jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. In models considering gluino (squark) pair production, gluino (squark) masses up to 2.2 (1.7) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Toward UV models of kinetic mixing and portal matter. VII. A light dark photon in the 3 𝑐 ⁢3 𝐿 ⁢1 𝐴 ⁢1 𝐵 model

The kinetic mixing (KM) portal, by which the Standard Model (SM) photon mixes with a light dark photon arising from a new 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 gauge group, allows for the possibility of viable scenarios of sub-GeV thermal dark matter with appropriately suppressed couplings to the SM. This KM can only occur if particles having both SM and dark quantum numbers, here termed portal matter, also exist. The presence of such types of states and the strong suggestion of a need to embed 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 into a non-Abelian gauge structure not too far above the TeV scale based on the renormalization-group equation running of the 𝑈⁢(1)𝐷 gauge coupling is potentially indicative of an enlarged group linking together the visible and dark sectors. The gauge group 𝐺 = 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(3) 𝑐 × 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(3) 𝐿 × 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐴 × 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐵 = 3 𝑐 ⁢3 𝐿 ⁢1 𝐴 ⁢1 𝐵 is perhaps the simplest setup wherein the SM and dark interactions are partially unified in a non-Abelian fashion that is not a simple product group of the form 𝐺 = 𝐺 SM × 𝐺 𝐷 encountered frequently in earlier work. The present paper describes the implications and phenomenology of this type of setup.

Towards UV-Models of Kinetic Mixing and Portal Matter VII: A Light Dark Photon in the 3c3L1A1B Model

The kinetic mixing (KM) portal, by which the Standard Model (SM) photon mixes with a light dark photon arising from a new U(1)DU(1)D gauge group, allows for the possibility of viable scenarios of sub-GeV thermal dark matter (DM) with appropriately suppressed couplings to the SM. This KM can only occur if particles having both SM and dark quantum numbers, here termed portal matter (PM), also exist. The presence of such types of states and the strong suggestion of a need to embed U(1)DU(1)D into a non-abelian gauge structure not too far above the TeV scale based on the RGE running of the U(1)DU(1)D gauge coupling is potentially indicative of an enlarged group linking together the visible and dark sectors. The gauge group G=SU(3)c×SU(3)L×U(1)A×U(1)B=3c3L1A1BG=SU(3)c×SU(3)L×U(1)A×U(1)B=3c3L1A1B is perhaps the simplest setup wherein the SM and dark interactions are partially unified in a non-abelian fashion that is not a simple product group of the form G=GSM×GDG=GSM×GD encountered frequently in earlier work. The present paper describes the implications and phenomenology of this type of setup.

Probing extended scalar sectors with precision e + e - → Zh and Higgs diphoton studies

We compute the one-loop corrections to σ(e + e - → Zh) arising from representative extended Standard Model scalar sector scenarios. According to the new scalar SU(2)L representations, we consider the inert doublet, real and complex triplet, quintuplet, and septuplet models. With the sub-percent level precision expected for prospective future e + e - collider measurements of σ(e + e - → Zh), studies of the Higgsstrahlung process will probe extended scalar sector particle spectrum and interactions in a manner complementary to direct searches at the Large Hadron Collider and possible future pp colliders. We also compare with the sensitivity of future Higgs diphoton decay rate measurements. We find that the σ(e + e - → Zh) and Γ(h → γγ) complementarity is particularly pronounced for the complex triplet model.

Flavor constraints in a generational three-Higgs-doublet model

We propose a three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) that goes beyond natural flavor conservation and in which each of the three Higgs doublets couples mainly to a single generation of fermions via nonstandard Yukawa structures. A hierarchy in the vacuum expectation values of the three Higgs doublets can partially address the Standard Model flavor puzzle. In light of the experimentally observed 125 GeV Higgs boson, we primarily work within a 3HDM alignment limit such that a Standard Model-like Higgs is recovered. In order to reproduce the observed Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa mixing among quarks, the neutral Higgs bosons of the theory necessarily mediate flavor changing neutral currents at the tree level. We consider constraints from neutral kaon, B meson, and D meson mixing as well as from the rare leptonic decays B s / B 0 / K L → μ + μ − / e + e − . We identify regions of parameter space in which the new physics Higgs bosons can be as light as a TeV or even lighter. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
