Local-Regional Surface Wave Dispersion Analysis using Ambient Noise Data of the Southern Nevada National Security Site Area

This report details seismic ambient noise analysis to improve seismic velocity estimates of the southeastern Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). We compare two different methods for estimating surface wave dispersion curves from ambient noise cross-correlations: frequency time analysis (FTAN) and Aki’s cross-spectral method (XSpec). We find that XSpec performs better for our local-regional dataset and frequency content. Using phase velocity estimates from XSpec, we build a preliminary phase velocity dispersion dataset, which contains data for 1,054 station pairs and 8,905 discrete phase velocity measurements for periods between 0.5 and 13 s. This phase velocity dataset will be incorporated into an updated local-regional P and S wave velocity model of the southeastern NNSS in the future and is expected to improve upon shallow velocity estimates.

MPACT Safeguards Modeling: FY25 Update

Sandia National Laboratories develops and maintains several open-source software packages to support material accountancy analyses. This includes the Material Accountancy Performance Indicator Toolkit (MAPIT), the Fissile Facility Flow Modeler (F3M) and the Separation and Safeguards Performance Model Library (SSPM-L). MAPIT is responsible for performing statistical safeguards analyses on bulk and itemized data from nuclear fuel cycle facilities and can operate on real or synthetic data. MAPIT is the only open-source software for such analyses. F3M is a library of modules, built in MATLAB Simulink, that contain pre made blocks to represent different generic fuel cycle processes. These blocks can be used together in a modular fashion to represent and simulate nuclear fuel cycle processes with the goal of improving facility-level accountancy during the design phase. F3M is also an open-source library. Finally, the SSPM-L library is a series of completed models built from F3M. The library includes facility models such as a generic PUREX facility and a fuel fabrication facility. The SSPM-L library is not open source, but is available to collaborators with a relevant use case. These tools include modeling and simulation pipelines to simulate nuclear fuel cycle facilities and the underlying software needed to simulate measurement uncertainty and perform statistical analyses. Together, these tools can perform end-to-end nuclear material accountancy analyses. This report documents the various improvements made to these tools in FY25. Specifically, we added new statistical test, new statistical modeling capabilities, new fuel cycle facility models, and launched a new open-source model component library.

Detection of Fissile Materials through Primary Cosmic Ray Interactions

Experiments performed by an LLNL team at the White Mountain Research center discovered that primary cosmic ray interactions on high-Z material produced large bursts of correlated neutrons. In fissionable material, these neutrons will start fission chains enhancing the neutron signature with a characteristic time signature. This signature could be a unique method for discovering fissionable material in challenging environments.

GADRAS-DRF Validation for Safeguards and Custom Peak Fit Enhancements

In previous years, SGTech funded enhancements to the isotopics routine in the software called Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software-Detector Response Function (GADRAS-DRF), including the addition of peak fit customization capabilities. A project was also funded that focused on implementing a peak-based model fitting routine, allowing model fitting to be performed without dependence on export-controlled cross-sections. In FY25 significant improvements were made to the custom peak fitting interface, accompanied by several validation studies within GADRAS-DRF. These studies encompassed IsotopeID performance, distributed source analysis, isotopics validation, and activity estimation. Additionally, the peak-only model fitting option was validated using an HPGe measurement of a rotating drum with line sources.

Watchmen 3.0.0 Users Guide: Revision 6

Watchmen is a research software application developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that incorporates the scientific and operational expertise for reviewing data from treaty monitoring radionuclide stations. The radionuclide stations are part of the International Monitoring System (IMS), a worldwide network to monitor for nuclear explosions. The data the IMS produces are critical to determine if a radionuclide release event is from a nuclear explosion. Stations deliver their measurements and system status to the International Data Centre (IDC), which forwards it via email to all subscribers. Watchmen is capable of processing data from several radioxenon station types.

Vision 0.3.2 Users Guide: Revision 0

Vision is a research software application developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) that incorporates the scientific and operational expertise for reviewing data from treaty monitoring radionuclide stations. These stations are part of a worldwide network to monitor for nuclear explosions, and the data they produce are critical to make the determination of whether a sample is from a nuclear explosion or some other source (i.e., nuclear reactor or medical isotope production facility). Stations deliver their measurements and system status to the International Monitoring System (IMS), which forwards it via email to all subscribers. Vision provides tools for viewing and analyzing these stations’ state of health data.

INS Nuclear Material Accounting and Control Instructional Video Materials- FY 25 Guides

This training video provides an essential guide to understanding and utilizing Tamper Indicating Devices (TIDs), with a specific focus on a common Mylar (Adhesive) variety during the application process. TIDs are a critical part of nuclear security, used to detect unauthorized access to sensitive materials or facilities. The Mylar (adhesive) TID employes a tamper-evident film integrated into the TID that visually indicates any tampering attempts. This video will explain how an example Mylar (adhesive) TID works, demonstrate proper installation techniques, and highlight how to interpret its indicators to ensure the security of nuclear materials.
