Relaxor behavior and electrothermal properties of Sn- and Nb-modified (Ba,Ca)TiO 3 Pb-free ferroelectric

Relaxor ferroelectrics have drawn attention for possible applications in solid-state cooling and thermal energy harvesting, owing to their electrothermal energy conversion properties. Here, we have synthesized and characterized the structure–property correlations of a new Sn- and Nb-doped (Ba,Ca)TiO 3 relaxor ferroelectric with large pyroelectric and electrocaloric effects over a broad temperature range. We observed two peaks for the temperature-dependent pyroelectric coefficient: (i) -(∂P/∂T) ~ 563 µC/(m 2 K) at T~ 270 K and (ii) -(∂P/∂T) ~ 1021 µC/(m 2 K) at T~ 320 K. In addition, a broad peak for electrocaloric temperature change is observed near 320 K with a relative cooling power of ~17 J/kg. These properties could be correlated to structural changes observed using X-ray diffraction at two different temperature ranges in the material. Analysis of high-energy X-ray scattering and specific heat capacity data revealed a transition from the cubic to tetragonal phase near T m ~ 320 K, whereas an additional increase in the tetragonality (c/a) of the polar phase is observed below T s ~ 270 K.

The new K, Pb-bearing uranyl-oxide mineral kroupaite: Crystal-chemical implications for the structures of uranyl-oxide hydroxy-hydrates

Abstract Kroupaite (IMA 2017-031), ideally KPb0.5[(UO2)8O4(OH)10]·10H2O, is a new uranyl-oxide hydroxylhydrate mineral found underground in the Svornost mine, Jáchymov, Czechia. Electron-probe micro-analysis (WDS) provided the empirical formula (K1.28Na0.07)Σ1.35(Pb0.23Cu0.14Ca0.05Bi0.03Co0.02Al0.01)Σ0.48 [(UO2)7.90(SO4)0.04O4.04(OH)10.00]·10H2O, on the basis of 40 O atoms apfu. Sheets in the crystal structure of kroupaite adopt the fourmarierite anion topology, and therefore kroupaite belongs to the schoepite-family of minerals with related structures differing in the interlayer composition and arrangement, and charge of the sheets. Uptake of dangerous radionuclides (90Sr or 135Cs) into the structure of kroupaite and other uranyl-oxide hydroxy-hydrate is evaluated based on crystal-chemical considerations and Voronoi-Dirichlet polyhedra measures. These calculations show the importance of these phases for the safe disposal of nuclear waste.

Modeling of a Generic Pebble Bed High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (PB-HTGR) with SAM

This report presents the modeling of the core of a generic pebble-bed reactor (PBR) at the system level using the System Analysis Module (SAM) code. This work is an extension of a previous work by the authors (Ooi et al. (2021)) that used the so-called 2-D ring model approach to model the PBMR-400. With the new approach, the pebble bed of the reactor is modeled with multiple PBCoreChannel components with spherical heat structures which allows the code to calculate thermal fluid parameters with built-in closure relations. The new core-channel approach is an improvement to the 2-D ring model approach as it does not introduce geometric distortions to the model and thus reduces the uncertainties of the predictions. In addition to thermal fluid simulations, point kinetics (PKE) are included to the model. Simulations are performed under a steady-state normal operation condition and a load-following transient scenario. This particular transient scenario is chosen as it tests both the thermal fluid and neutronics aspects of the model. The predicted results from both the steady-state and transient scenarios are compared with the results by Stew- art et al. (2021) who performed similar simulations with a Griffin-Pronghorn coupled tool. Despite the differences between the codes, with SAM being a system-analysis code and Pronghorn being a porous-medium code, both sets of results compare favorably. The over- all profiles and trends of the predicted temperatures and reactivities from the SAM and Griffin/Pronghorn simulations are similar, with some differences in their predicted values. The first part of the report covers the significance of a relatively fast-running approach that is capable of modeling the pebble bed reactor at the system-level while simultaneously capturing the radial thermal behavior of the core. Then, the modeling approach used in this work is discussed in details. Lastly, the results and comparisons with the Griffin/Pronghorn simulation are presented.

Production of High Specific Activity 72 Se/ 72 As, 117m Sn and 203 Pb for Research and Clinical Applications: Effective target design, recycling of target material and radioisotope separation

This grant involved four objectives for producing high specific activity radionuclides using reactor and accelerator technologies that would find use in medical, industrial and research applications. This grant continued a collaboration between the scientists at the University of Washington (UW), the University of Missouri (MU) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and addresses the need for high specific activity radionuclides, both reactor- and accelerator-produced, and for the training and education of radiochemists in isotope production, separations and precursor syntheses. All three institutions were involved in the projects, but to different degrees. The chemistry graduate students (Ph.D. program at MU) may have participated in an internship at one of the other institutions for training and project translation/facilitation.

Modification of Χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) Production in p Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The LHCb Collaboration measures production of the exotic hadron Χ c1 (3872) in proton-nucleus collisions for the first time. Comparison with the charmonium state ψ(2S) suggests that the exotic Χ c1 (3872) experiences different dynamics in the nuclear medium than conventional hadrons, and comparison with data from proton-proton collisions indicates that the presence of the nucleus may modify Χ c1 (3872) production rates. This is the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor of an exotic hadron.

Remanufacturable "Net-Zero Pb" Perovskite Solar Modules

Our introduced a low-cost recycling method for perovskite PV cells which utilize KI salt-based solvents, a more sustainable chemical compared to commonly used chemicals such as DMF, chlorobenzene etc. All steps of the recycling method were demonstrated in detail in publications and presentations of the team. In addition, the techno-economic team demonstrated that the KI-based method is a more promising option compared to other methods investigated in the literature.

“Production of High Specific Activity 155 Tb, 161 Tb and 203 Pb for Research and Clinical Applications: Effective Target Design, Target Material Recycling and Radioisotope Separation”

Radioisotopes are essential for the development and application of radiopharmaceuticals that target specific diseases, such as cancer, offering unique potential for precision medicine. The growing demand for theranostic radioisotopes underscores their critical role in personalized medicine, where they enhance diagnostic imaging, minimize patient radiation exposure, and improve targeted tissue uptake, particularly in receptor- and antigen-directed therapies. The theranostic pair terbium-155 (diagnostic) and terbium-161 (therapeutic) holds significant promise for advancing individualized, targeted, and dosimetry-driven radiotherapies. However, the United States currently lacks routine and reliable production of these isotopes. This project made significant progress toward addressing this supply issue by developing production and separation methods for terbium-155 and terbium-161 while also training the next generation of the nuclear and radiochemistry workforce. This grant also strengthened collaboration between scientists at the University of Washington, the University of Missouri and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The research effort focused on evaluating target preparation methods, optimizing irradiation parameters, and refining isolation processes. In addition, the project provided extensive hands-on training to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, equipping them with expertise in radioisotope production technologies and fostering the growth of the nuclear science workforce.
